« Back From the Brink? Roger and Roddick Recap »
Second #1 Serb
Posted 10/05/2008 @ 11 :09 AM

On Monday, Jelena Jankovic will reclaim the WTA No. 1 ranking that she held ever so briefly earlier in the year.  This time, she'll occupy the spot coming off of a win (she backed into it beforehand), after defeating Nadia Petrova in the Stuttgart final.

But more on Jankovic's rise to the top. How'd she do it? Playing. Playing some more. And then playing some more. Granted, she wins quite a bit too, but Jankovic plays more than any of her direct competitors. That being said, her number one ranking will undoubtesdly have a caveat next to it that says (*yet to win a Grand Slam title).

In the meantime (until the next Grand Slam at least), Jankovic keeps on doing what she does best, playing and winning. On Satruday she took out Venus Williams in three tough sets in Stuttgart.

Here's a great recap of that match (thanks Eurosport)...

These two really went at it -- such a high quality of play throughout. Great shots/points to look out for...

Jankovic backhand at 2:16, baseline rally at 3:15, baseline rally at 6:30, baseline rally at 7:00, slide / split winner at 7:38.

Question: How do they play with that huge billboard in the background? You can see it well around 3:30.

Finally, let me also say how great it is to have two healthy Williams sisters at this point in the year.  (Editor's note: Serena Williams is currently suffering from an ankle injury, casuing her to withdraw from this week's Kremlin Cup.) They've both won Grand Slam events, they've both been challenging for all the majors, and they're both still on the tour in October. This year is shaping up to be a good WTA Championships with the number one ranking truly on the line. Where is it this year? Ha!

Dan,
Thanks for this nice recap. Some very nice rallies and they both hit the ball as hard as it can be.

I think at this point of the year JJ deserves the no 1 even though she has not won a Slam. Ana is just invisible. Williamses are just fantastic.

Uhg. Number 1 and no slams. Also, Venus has to fight for a spot in the Year-end. Like the ATP, the WTA should guarantee a spot in the year-end to any player that wins a slam, period. This way you don't have someone like Zvonereva at the Year-end while Venus is out. Stoopid.

^^Venus hardly ever ever plays anyway!

Jankovic is beginning to look like a #1 now. This year, out of the 4 slam winners only Serena has really done much else so I think it's definately between her and Jankovic for me. Jelena has racked up more points though, and i do think she'll get one next year if she maintains current form. Weren't Clijsters and Mauresmo #1 before they won their slams?

I used to care who was #1 until Venus and Serena revolutionzed the game -- and made it irrelevant; meaning they continue to win slams while the workhorses above them don't.

"Also, Venus has to fight for a spot in the Year-end."

Well, if Venus played more than 11 tournaments this year she might not have been in such a position.

The YEC are based on a player's performance throughout the entire year not just at Slams and that's the way it should be, IMO. Yes, Venus won Wimbledon but she hasn't done enough at other tournaments or played enough to be simply gifted a place.

Why shouldn't she have to fight to earn her place there? All the other players have to.

what an amazing match, i'm so proud of my Venus, of my JJ. The matches involving JJ and one of the sisters have been some of the best of the season. take that in consideration the next time you're dissing JJ. she brings the best out of the williams, and their best is just pure entertainment.

Jelena has beaten Venus in 4 of their last 5 matches, including wins on clay, hardcourt, and Grass.

It's amazing how the Williams sisters can be hobbled all year long with devastating leg injuries, then incredibly, hop out of their wheelchairs when the Slams come around. What recuperative powers! Not.

If you believe that I've got some Lehman Brothers shares to sell you.

Image if the NE Patriots could sit on the sidelines during the regular season, then show up with a healthy Tom Brady for the Super Bowl. Would that be fair to the other teams?

What the Williams get away with isn't fair to the other tennis players. It's parasitic.

Hater's Please! Money is why the WTA ranking is set-up as it is; They don't care about quality as much as they do about quantity! The Grand Slams should be more heavly weighted, and the season shortened! Jelena and other's like her won't last as long as the Williams sister, because of the wear and tear on their bodies. At this rate Jelena better hurry up and win a Grand Slam before her body gives out! Also, the elite players on both the mens and womens side all concentrate on the slams and tier I's. The rest are just easy points and should be down graded accordingly. Finally, when all is said and done. The Williams sisters and Henin's name will be remembered along with Martina, and Chris. Jelena will probably win a slam but I doubt more than 2. It seems only the women have had so many non-slam number 1's. Until they start ranking like the ATP this will continue. The Slams are and should be the Gold Standard!
