Hamburg Crisis Center, Day 4

By Rosangel Valenti, TW Contributing Editor

Good morning. This is the Tribe's daily post for discussing the live tennis at the ATP Masters Series event in Hamburg, or the WTA tournament taking place in Rome.

Yesterday I spent the whole day sitting on the main court at the Rothenbaum Club in Hamburg. At the end of the day, I was able to reflect that not only have I now completed the Rafa Euro-spectator Slam, at least on on a non-calendar basis (it began at Roland Garros in 2007), but that my face, in the past few weeks, has finally stopped burning from the sun, having acquired its current colour on tennis courts in four countries in the past month. The venue is impressive - light and airy in spite of the structure that supports the retractable roof, and provides shade to the upper seats. I felt that it showcased the tennis extremely well, creating both space and intimacy. Apart from some empty seats up at the back, and in the boxes at the front, Hamburg was packing in a good crowd for most of yesterday - at its height during the first set of the Nadal-Starace match. The shadows from the retractable canvas roof that you see on TV are much less distracting that you might expect - I barely noticed them. Many springlike green trees surround the club, and the grounds are spacious, with a strong selection of concessions for food and drink, and tables for the public to sit and eat, and enjoy the sun.

The secondary court, M1, is located right next to the main stadium, and it's easy to access for a few minutes, for those who wish to sample the matches there. It's noisy, but also has generous seating, so it's unlikely that fans will miss out if their favourite is playing there instead of on the main court. Unfortunately, I was unable to see any of the Murray-Simon match there, due to a scheduling conflict.

Match Choice:

For me, this would be Nadal versus Murray. Their previous two meetings took place on hard courts, and both times the matchup proved compelling. Their match in Madrid last year was the most exciting live match I saw in 2007. I won't be there today, having arrived home in the small hours of this morning, but will be watching keenly. Naturally, Nadal is the heavy favourite. Murray has some weapons to use against him, though. Rafa's facial expressions were priceless after being dropshotted countless times yesterday by Potito Starace (photos coming in tomorrow's Crisis Center, along with plenty of others, including Roger Federer's noticeably briefer appearance against Jarkko Nieminen).

Player of the Day:

Among the players I saw yesterday, I have to award this to Nicolas Kiefer, who managed to put out the Rome finalist, Stanislas Wawrinka, in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. In my photo above, he roars after taking the first set, conveniently right at the photographers (I was seated just a few rows behind them). In fact, this moment set me thinking - I wonder how much players give thought to the photo-opportunities created by their on-court body language, given the character story told by the images that result?

As for Kiefer's win, he managed to do it in two very tight sets, needing to break back in order to stay in the second, and save set points - I was sensing that if he lost this, all the momentum would be with his opponent. Wawrinka is coming off two weeks that involved a semifinal in Barcelona, and the aforementioned Rome final, so may be a touch weary. However, both players were performing well - Kiefer just seemed to have extra bite and depth on his groundstrokes when it mattered. After celebrating (sorry to KIefer fans - taking shirt removal pictures after the win was thwarted by people jumping to their feet and spoiling the view), he thanked the audience for their support yesterday, and said it had helped him through. I was totally caught up in the excitement of the moment, and was delighted for KIefer. The crowd atmosphere was very pleasant throughout, towards both players.

Weather Report:

In Hamburg yesterday, I found it oppressively hot in the middle of the day. In the forward rows there's no shelter from the sun. More sun and heat is forecast for today, and this unseasonable weather is now expected to continue right through the weekend. This means that the courts should continue to play a tad faster than usual.

Meanwhile, in Rome some sun is expected, in between clouds.

As always, enjoy today's tennis.

First.

Good matches all day long.

Ivo better serve out of a tree today.

Now I feel obligated to say "second."

Hoping for a repeat of last year's final, with the same results (not necessarily the same scoreline).

Hott Sauce is defintely Hott. Verdasco looks really preened while Ferru looks like he just got out of bed. HS striking the ball quite well especially on the bh side.

anybody watching Ferrer and Verdasco? the first game has been going on for nearly 9 minutes... is Ferrer looking okay?

I'm watching Tipsy but might have to switch over.

Rachael, Ferru looks like typical early match Ferru. He takes anywhere from two games to an entire set to warm up, but at this rate he should be in form by the next game. I've seen sets that were shorter than this.

wwwa, that's a relief, I was a bit concerned about the lack of crisis center....

anyway Ferrer and Verdasco already vigorously screeeeaming their lungs out about their discontent and the match started only like 10 minutes ago and it's 11AM,

still playing the first game....

Rachael: they're both looking okay, but quite a few unforced errors on critical points - from Verdasco in particular.
More than 13 minutes for the first game now - this could be a very long day.

We're on Deuce #11, for those counting at home.

still playing the first game!!!!

Verdasco missed 8 break points, many of them through UFEs. And Ferrer finally holds!

thanks Jenni - so it doesn't look like some hangover from whatever fatigue he had in Rome? good good. can't believe one of them hasn't given this game up yet.

28 points played in the first service game by Ferru. We should be ready for a long match I guess.

ah Ferrer took it as I hit post. drama over. I'll focus on Tipsy now. even though this is going to get frustrating. no more drop shots please Montanes.

Rachael, too soon to tell if there's a hangover or it's just his normal malaise to start the match. Verdasco is one of those playes who worries me more than usual, but Ferru does seem to be striking his FH well.

after 15 minutes and 28 points played it was over.
the first game - not the match.
blink and you´ve missed it.

Perhaps the worst single game in the history of tennis. They traded errors for fifteen minutes.

Wow, Ferru saved 8 BP !

what a shot!!! verdasco is not just a preening rooster, he can really play good tennis!!

damn..the livescores is freezing..

Verdasco finally converts on his 10th break point.

go Fernando go!!! I missed it but did Ferrer decided to serve first again? In Rafa's match, he did the same and was broken immediately. David, never serve first!!!

the stadium in hamburg is the 5th largest in the world (acording to the commentator)

TOF, YES! I don't know WHY he feels like serving first is an advantage. And of course he promptly DFed on the first point.

jenni: so he did it again!!! ?? rrr, he always starts matches completely off... hombre it's nonsensical !!!

Verdasco is playing really well except he wants to pull the trigger to soon. It's a bit strange seeing him without a hat or headband. He looks very professional out there.

I'm going for Verdasco.

Never seen Montanes play before, impressive stuff.

somehow a Verdasco-Federer match looks less appealling than a Ferrer-Federer particularly when clay in concerned....

1-3 now

It's shambolic. That first game was pretty much a Ferrer match in a nutshell - 8 BPs, snapping at the umpire over a perceived bad call, several DFs, FH winners and an eventual Ferrer hold in which I was forced several times to switch to the Tipsy match for my sanity.

kirsty: really?, I might switch then. The moody Spaniards are too much to take this morming....

Double break. Go Fer Go.

4-1 for Fernando, I want to laugh but I can't.

Tipsy's 1st serve 28%. those are probably just the aces. doesn't help his case.
Montanes is zipping winners like he was born to do it, 13 of them to 4 UFE
compared to Tipsy's 7 W - 9 UFE

Montanes takes the first set at love, 6-2.

I'm suuuuure Janko just likes to lose the first set.

commentator: it's FerreRRRRRR not FerrE (or is the way it is pronounced is Spanish???).I'm completely confused!

and I am not my usual self this morning. I am still baffled by Justine "disappearance" from the circuit!!

TOF: That pronounciation of Ferrer was one of the reasons I switched to the Tipsy match, it was driving me nuts

Whats with Ferrer?

ToF - according to his ATP profile
"Pronounced: fuh-RER"

the way the commentator pronounces Tipsarevic on Betfair irks me ever so slightly. and the way he said Acasuso earlier. sigh, he's just not my "hot" commentator.

Tipsy blows a half chance on the Montanes serve, and that's probably the only kind of chance he's going to get, so he PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BLOW IT

"a rare moment of subtlety played by either of the players"

????????

and they are payed to say that while they seat on their chairs?.

where is snoo foo?

Tipsa's black shorts are really too short (ha!) , I might need to go back to the testy Spaniards...

Montanes is stood so far back when receiving I can't even tell if he makes the return.
S&V Tipsy! S&V!

Janko breaks a racquet. Montanes breaks serve.

TOF, Tipsy's short shorts are driving you away?? That's crazy talk!

Verdasco's Law, which states that there is an inverse relationship between the amount of time spent on court and ability to maintain any semblance of mental fortitude, is already being invoked out on Centre Court. I guess that long first game was good for something.

Why is Verdasco called Hot Sauce? Lemme guess, TABASCO?? Right???

kirsty, rachael: thanks, I see that I am not alone!!! :) I shouldn't be aggravated by what the booth guy is saying but I'm a bit testy myself this morning....

by the way rachael, the "hot" commentator, is it the Anglo one with the kind of basso voice? (not Koenig or the older guy that usually sits with him). He usually does commentating alone I think?

5:54 poster - I think snoo foo posts on MTF instead of here now.

jenni: yes I know!!! but when *anything* can take you away from the tennis played, you migh as well go somewhere else... this short draws attention to Tipsa's bulging calfs and the fact that he walks like a duck, with his feet in a V. It's just too much this morning....

fernando, why now?

kim: unsurprisingly yes!!

kim: unsurprisingly, yes!!

sorry for the double post!!!!!

TOF - oh no, hot commentator isn't on AMS TV. the guy you're referring to is Chris Wilkinson I think.
I mean a British commentator who often calls on the streaming used for betting websites - Betfair, Bet365, William Hill. there's a fair few of them used (the two today are Grandad and Monotone) but one of them is just.. adorable sounding.

I can't make it sound any less sad.

switched over to Ferrer and Verdasco. couldn't take the Tipsy punishment any more.

TOF, I get it. I'm actually annoyed he's not wearing the glasses. You can't have the breathe right strip without going all the way and wearing the glasses too. Thanks for the laugh about Tipsy, by the way.

Seems like everyone's a bit testy this morning. I am in the same boat, and Ferrer has no business potentially losing this set to Verdasco. This is a typical Fernando performance, as Adler says 'he's losing his mind'.

Ferrer breaks as Hott Sauce hit 2 FH long from 30-all. Typical David rallying when a player is serving for the set(or match).

5-all set 1.

*leaving for work*

rachael: no, no it is very interesting :) (but still can't see who you're talking about for th e"hot one though...)

ahhhhhe 5-5!!!!! I am starting to enjoy the match and my mood is slowly lifting.THIS IS GOOD!!!

jenni: :)))

TOF - next time he's commentating, I'll let you know so you can hear who I mean (providing you can use the betting websites to stream?)

shocking result for Tipsy - Montanes wins it 6-2 6-1. his three set battles must have caught up with him.
I'm gutted!
it's all on Safin now.

I wish HS wasn't so mentally challenged as he does have a good game. Big serve good groundies.

So the Tipsy match has come and gone and we still haven't finished the first set over here. Awesome.

i didnt bother to watch tipsy match.. he always seem to play one fantastic match then the next match hes just fall apart..

this david/fernando match might go for another 2 hours the way these long rallies are going

I refuse to see Verdasco-Federer!!!!!

The Original French(ie) what about soderling vs verdasco??

whats going on the tie-break?

euew3dadiroe, Verdasco wins the first set. Nothing against him in general but why now? why decide he wants to win TODAY? and of course to continue with my foul attitude particularly just after a lost TB:
DAVID IT IS COMPLETELY YOUR FAULT !!! YOU DESERVED TO LOSE THAT FIRST SET, WHY SERVE FIRST?

I think Fernando has a new demeanour on court on is it just today. He is still mentally challenged but he hasn't yelled at himself or thrown any rackets. He has remained positive which is a good sign.

Ferrer-Verdasco 1st set tiebreak

Ferrer serving to start TB
F 1-0 Verdasco FH return wide
1-all Ferrer BH into net
F 2-1 Verdasco FH long after pushed back by I/O FH by Ferrer
2-all Ferrer BH wide
F 3-2 Verdasco FH long as Ferrer hit deep FH stretching Verdasco
3-all Verdasco Ace down the T
V 4-3 Verdasco FH winner - well constructed point
V 5-3 Ferrer BH wide
V 5-4 Verdasco FH wide
V 6-4 Ferrer I/O FH wide
71 minutes elasped
Verdasco wins the set as Ferrer BH sails into the net

Hot Sauce serving to begin the 2nd set leading 7-6(4)

Preach it, TOF. Something's up with Ferru today, he's so listless and not quite into it. And my stupid feed keeps cutting out, what am I paying for???

Oh AA, I saw him toss a racket. He's lucky it didn't hit the linesperson or he'd have been in a heap of trouble.

Aussie Ange - he threw a racquet and it nearly he a linesjudge. Goodall pointed out that if it had hit him the umpire could have defaulted Verdasco.

david jose: I don't think that's going to happen. Unless Fed defaults the match!!!... although Söderling can be tricky to play

This will be a nice way for Beth to eat her breakfast watching this match.

Jenni - was just about to ask if anybody was having trouble with the AMS feed. mine keeps cutting out. so irritated with it.

Yes I did see that but it was a very vicious throw but he did give the linesperson a lovely smile.

rachael: please do for the commentator! (and yes I can listen to that too)

what?I missed the thrown racquet !!!!! At least Marat knows where to throw his racquet! it's the mark of a real champion, throw your stuff but on people.

And that should of read "wasn't a very vicious throw". Well off to drink champagne with a couple of gfs. Don't worry TOF I'm sure Ferru is not losing on purpose and he does like 3 setters.

feeds breaking up everywhere!!!

Post wording up at last - very annoying when all your work disappears just as it's ready to go live...

2-0 now.mood slowly going down again.

aussie ange: true, anger keeps David going, or at least that's what I want to hold to today...

What is happening to all the tennis players this year and being "burnt out". Ferru's coach is saying David is burnt out after all the hard work he put in last year. Henin, Gasquet and Ferru. Maybe Ana's a bit burnt out as well.

This is approaching painful territory, with David being up 0-40 and so far unable to convert. That's just not like him.

it is the same problem, ALWAYS. In MC and also in Barcelona and now: Ferrer putting his forehand directly into the net....

Aussie Ange - not sure how relevant it is but both Ferru and Gasquet made the Masters Cup for the first time in 2007. It cuts down the off season to qualify for that so perhaps they're just used to that extra time between years. It's also quite a long journey to Shanghai, one more lot of jetlag to contend with.

that was a great exchange!!!!

3-0. no comment.

TOF: Ferrer needs you there for a bit of on-court coaching!!

thanks kirsty for the update about snoo foo. her funny posts will be missed.

and the 73rd forehand shanked into the net to give Fernando a 4-1 advantage..I am despondent. At this point, it's not coaching but therapy David needs (and me too).

and what do I see? Surfer boy just bsgelled Monaco???

yeah! that's what Monaco gets for knocking out Superbol.
(sorry Juan, I actually want you to beat Seppi)

Well, Janko was just outplayed by Montanes fair and square, but the way he gave up in the end isn't something to be proud of. On the last point he even had the ball on the racquet and decided not to play it...Look at Ferru, guy lost first set after 70 minutes, is 1-4 down in the second after missing numerous break points and he's still fighting...

Is there some non p2p stream for Rome? That justin.tv link is apparently gonna be showing Hamburg whole day.

AGAIN THIS FOREHAND INTO THE NET!!! this is becoming a curse!!!

hi, all. first chance to see pico and he got bagelled in the first set? anyone watching that?

this is perfect play by Verdasco, (if I go back to a minimum of objectivity for just 5 seconds....)

'morning all! Roseangel - sounds like you had a great time yesterday, a fun filled day of tesnnis in the sun! I had to laugh at the thought of you burning from the sun in 4 different countries...

congrats on completing the rafa spectator slam. Will you try to continue on and make it a calander spectator as well?

again the net!!!! now I need to laugh because..........

Ferrer holds. it's a miracle, although it shouldn't be for the player ranked 5 in the world

great, great play by Verdaso, the last exchange on match point was top notch.

where did everybody go??? :)

well verdasco took the match. i only saw a wee bit - but it seemed that David was hitting short, and really didnt have a lot of pace on h is shots.

Ferru ferru ferru. *hugs*

Congrats to verdasco and his fans!

i dont know about everyone else? but im looking for a web stream for jelena/maria match no luck yet.

david jose, please post the link if you find a stream.

i don't think monaco will win this one...*sigh*

but i'm happy for verdasco. that was a big win for him.

Well done to Hott Sauce! He's so excited, he's yelling Vamos! at the camera!

The commentators just said that his father has been getting more involved with his coaching recently.

Morning, jb. Yes, I'll try for the calendar Slam. Though I'll have to stop after that, in case I get addicted.

If there's a Nadal-Djokovic SF this week, I think I will also try to get there. Just couldn't manage to stay for Nadal-Murray today, which is a real pity. Flights to Hamburg from here are very easy, though, and not expensive. I really liked what I saw of Hamburg - wide streets, loads of green spaces.

the GOAT is on court
