Blake2By Rosangel Valenti, TW Contributing Editor

Good morning. This is today's thread for discussing the tennis taking place in Rome, or at the WTA event in Berlin.

Along with a friend, I hope to make it to the tennis in person at some point today, at least for the later sessions under the lights. I'll also definitely be watching live tomorrow - it's a while back that my friends in Rome managed to secure tickets for the semifinals. It's quite chilly during the evenings in Rome as yet, which probably explains the poor attendance at the evening sessions under the lights so far, so I'll make sure to wrap up warmly.

Today's quarterfinal line-up includes two Americans, two Swiss, two Spaniards, a Czech and a Serb. James Blake takes on an in-form Stanislas Wawrinka first, followed by That Other Swiss Guy versus Radek Stepanek. Next, Andy Roddick faces Tommy Robredo, and in the evening, Novak Djokovic will meet Nicolas Almagro.

Blake's head-to-head with Wawrinka stands at 0-1. Interestingly, their only career meeting so far took place at Roland Garros three years ago, when Wawrinka prevailed over five sets. Federer's career head-to-head with Stepanek stands at 4-1 - the only encounter won by Stepanek took place on clay, over three sets, and it was back in 2002. Roddick's career head-to-head with Tommy Robreo stands at 7-0, including a win on clay, in the Rome quarterfinals, again in 2002. Djokovic and Almagro have never played before on the ATP tour, and I'm particularly looking forward to this one. The two met in a clay Challenger event back in 2004, when Allmagro won in straight sets. But, overall, there's not much, historically speaking, to tell us what might happen tonight.

As always, enjoy today's tennis.

In Berlin, Victoria Azarenka leads Alona Bondarenko 7-6(2),1-2

Rest of order of play:
Safina vs. S Williams
Dementieva vs. Jankovic
Szavay vs. Ivanovic

G'Day master ace. looking forward to the quarterfinals! Blake and stan should be a ggood game yet i fear for james. Thanks for the update from berlin.

Ups i forgot to say 2nd. thats my best so far.

Jungleboy,
Good day to you also. More fun to be had at Rome and Berlin.

Blake holds after 2 deuces.

Jungleboy,
Are you watching the match live or watching scoreboard like me ready for the day job to end. I hope to see Novak/Nicolas live on Tennis Channel at 3:00 PM EST.

master ace, i've been waiting for the new C.C for a while. The old 1 took so long to load. Anyway do you think blake will cause another upset? I give him a 30% shot.

I'm watching scoreboard at the moment master ace.

Betfair are straight up using the AMS TV stream - Koenig and Wilkinson commentating over there too. they've given Grandad a rest, thank all that is holy.

Blake dodges and early bullet and avoids a break in his first service game. and Stan holds to love..
if Blake goes through, I want him to go into the SF on the back of a gruelling 3 setter, just incase Roddick also goes through ;)

got plenty of work to do early this afternoon while keeping my eye on the tennis, so I'll drop by properly in my allotted Rowdy watching time.

enjoy the first couple of matches guys!

oh, and I see Mohamed Lahyani is charing this - hope Blake can be a bit more well behaved under his smooth gaze.

Victoria Azarenka defeats Alona Bondarenko 7-6(2),6-2.

Dinara Safina and Serena Williams next.

Followed by:
Elena Dementieva and Jelena Jankovic
Agnes Szavay and Ana Ivanovic

Forgot to put the ladies first name in my 7:21 AM post.

Good Morning starshine....
hope everyone is primed and ready for a full day of finger snapping good tennis.

except for Lames second game, what is he doing!!!?

Novak/Almagro should be a great match. I'm thinking this match should be fairly even having seen them both in action this week.
And the J-Train gets broken.

I'm just in time to see Stan who seems to be in fine form. What a great afternoon of tennis we have ahead of us!

Here are my picks from yesterday:

WTA quarterfinals:
Safina/Williams - Williams in 2
A Bondarenko/Azarenka - Azarenka in 3
Dementieva/Jankovic - Jankovic in 3
Szavay/Ivanovic - Ivanovic in 2

ATP quarterfinals:
Federer/Stepanek - Federer in 2
Djokovic/Almagro - Djokovic in 3
Roddick/Robredo - Roddick in 2
Blake/Wawrinka - Wawrinka in 3

Rosangel - thanks for the photo of Ancic the other day. I'm in Split now, people want so much for him to do well. It didn't help that Hajduk lost to Dinamo Zagreb, too.

Go Serena!

jungleboy
Let's hope it's not the J-train-wreck today

On Rafa:
Anyone who has been watching Rafa play this season can see that he is on another level. As far as the JC match is concerned - it was clear that if Rafa had not had an injury to his FEET he would have won the match despite the level of JC's play. Rafa's play was a cut above JC who played well. I believe that this match presents the clear cut case that JC didn't beat Rafa, Rafa lost. Even injured as he was, he still out played Ferrero.

Now, the "IT" factor that Rafa has that the rest in the field struggle mightily with is his ability to remain CONSISTENT - game after game, match after match, tournament after tournament. JC lost in the next round of play! So where was the great victory in his round with an injured Rafa? Rafa does not play hit or miss tennis. Rafa is consistently playing at a high level.

Rafa will come roaring back - win Hamburg, win Roland Garros, win Wimbledon and become the number one Tennis Player by season's end.
He's just got "IT" like that.

Stan holds for 3-1 saving 2 BP at 15-40.

The J-Train sets up 2 bp curtosy of a df by stan.
Stan aces to get back to deuce - saves 2 bp.
Great play from the stan machine there, came back from 15-40 to win the game to consolidate the break of the J-Trains serve.

Lames with the F bomb already..he brought that bad boy attitude with him today, hope it doesn't derail his level of play.
Stan seems unshakeable

master ace,
Do you really think that A-Rod will beat disco Tommy in straight sets. I hope so :-)

WARNING, astute tennis comment coming up: James looks grumpy.

Yello fuzzy and Swiss Viking,
Why James is upset at the moment? Has a call gone against him or is Stan frustrating him with his tactics?

Yello fuzz,
thats disappointing, I thought that james was always a curtious gentleman lol.

Just read that Berdych will be back in Hamburg!!!

and blake has bit grumpy/angry since the beginning here. Is it the memory of his accident? At least, it helps him with the tennis (quarters!!) but it does nothing for his, hem, charm..

meant: blake has been a bit grumpy/angry

Master Ace, I think he's frustrated, but I'm not sure at what, the match has just started (he looked grumpy even before the break). Maybe he just woke up on the wrong side of the bed or maybe there's just something going on. Maybe playing in Rome after what happened is freaking him out more than he thinks. Who knows...

My mom always said her boss had PMS when he was acting grumpy for no apparent reason. Maybe it's a case of guy-PMS...

It looks like the J-Train has crashed into the Wawrinka-wall!
Down 2-4 in the 1st set.

Lames, this isn't a pity party, It's a tennis match!!!
....no it's a dessert topping, no it's a floor wax....

It's a wall, it's a trunk, it's a SuperStan!!!!!!

ok serena-dinara starting. TV is calling!

The J-Train holds in a close game, he was forced to deuce after being up 40-love then saved a bp and managed to hold in the end. He trails 3-4.

The Original French(ie),
Please provide any commentary on Dinara/Serena if you can.

Mrs Tennis, I think you're being overoptimistic. Nadal lost to JCF because he is injured, yes?
How does that make him a favorite for next week?
I get a big giggle out of any proclamation for Nadal becoming #1 during Federer's reign... let's talk about it once TMF has his fifth US Open in his pocket. You know, a little after Labor Day this year '-))

jungleboy
Lames is a big crybaby today, he's standing around and watching the winners go by.... no effort to retrieve some of those balls that he might have ,at least got his racket on.
The first rule in tennis( for me ) ,is to chase every ball down. I have such a lame forehand that I have to go after every ball. I hate to see the pro's standing there and not make the extra effort.
Lames is flat footed and looks lethargic out there.

J.Bjorkman/K.Ullyett take the first set against J.Kerr/J.Niemenen 6-4 after breaking serve in the last game. They trail 0-1 after being broken first up in the 2nd set.

Stan, come on....

The J-Train has put some much neaded fuel into his empty tank! He breaks back at 15 and is still in the 1st set. ( rather surprisingly! )

Master Ace
He gave up an easy game (the 2nd time he served) and he's been pouting ever since. Maybe once he gets a good sweat going and hangs in a couple of rallies he'll loosen up and get his teeth in this match
speak of the devil....40 love after breaking back

Wawrinka is cranking the ball off of his bh, with accuracy. I don't think he can keep it up for the whole match thoufh. We'll see if some UFE's start to sneak in...then Blake can take him down.

Good morning, everyone!

Stan the Man, who I am really a fan of, should have been up a double break at this point, and how he is down 4-5. Stan seems to lack that killer instinct at the end of sets and I think that is holding him back a bit.

With that said, I still put this match at 50/50. James isn't exactly the best at closing out matches either.

Lames/J-Train/Blake-Brick/J-Plane/B-Bomb...holds at love and leads 5-4 in the 1st.

The three most hated people in tennis:
Djoker,Novak Djokovic,Choker

Serena breks Safina and leads 2-1 in berlin.

Overoptimistic? No. Confident in what I'm witnessing in Rafa's game? Yes.
How does that make him a favorite next week? Again - his level of play is higher right now.

Giggle on. Nuff said.

===========
Rafa will come roaring back - win Hamburg, win Roland Garros, win Wimbledon and become the number one Tennis Player by season's end.
He's just got "IT" like that.
===========

Here we go again - year after year.
Didn't your past experience teach your not to project Nadal's success beyond clay? FORGET ABOUT WIMBLEDON!

the Novak match starts at 9, and there's a double's match after that! That's not a night session, that's a midnight session!! It's ridiculous.

Nadal is so great that he can win every tournament for the rest of the year, with injuries.
He is so consistent that he won 6 whole games in his last match. Last time I checked you had to win at least 6 per set to actually win the match.
His net game has become remarkably good. I'll give you that.

Federer will build a lead of 2000 points by this weekend..so he is untouchable till Wimbledon

swiss viking i know ay and then theres roddick/robredo to follow.
Blake leads 6-5.

Serena up a break
It is great to see on the onscreen program guide , hours of tennis coverage on the TTC
still don't understand why Berlin couldn't have been shown on tape delay throughout the week!? Any tournament with the major stars in the sport, has to be covered!
I can't think of any reasonable concept of why this can't be done
other than, EOC
(executives on crack)

jungleboy, roddick follows fed this afternoon, novak plays tonight followed by doubles.

Does anyone think that serena williams could be in the top 100, even top 50 of the ATP?

What is Stan doing out there???

He can't give the momentum away like that.

yello fuzz make that up 2 breaks lol.

Howdy Rachel, Jungleboy and Co

Well I got home from work and had a nanna nap ready for today's play. And I will join the Stan bandwagon.

Nice 2nd serve from Waw. Wished he had better skin though.

Bloody hell Blake is at it again. He better be careful as the Italians will start going against him.

I agree with the Nico match starting @9pm that is late especially as they will prolly have to come out and play in the arvo tomorrow.

tiebreaker.stan will win all the way..

The first tiebreak of the singles QF in rome. You Beauty!

jungleboy
don't go there, guys don't like their skirts ruffled,,.er...I mean pantyhose in a bunch...er mustaches twirled

Sigh - the killer instinct - that does seem to be a bit of an issue sometimes with Stan. He's got the tools, but just can't seem to close sometimes.

though apparantly James has picked it up.

James is a top 10 player, has been for years now. There's no reason, imo, he cannot do well on clay.

That being said - much as I'm fond of Stan-the-Man -GO JAMES!

Withdrew from Hamburg: Gonzalez, Ancic, Ferrero, Nalbandian, Haas, Hewitt, and Baghdatis.

Unclear: Tsonga, Youzhny, and apparently Federer.

Almagro Fact #1. He can speak Italian fluently.

G'day aussie ange or good evening in our case :-) The waw-wall up 3-2 in the TB.

that was an excellent drop shot by Blake

Stan is a neat freak, he changed his shirt after falling on the court

Mr/Mrs/Ms/Miss/Dr/Professor... Anonymous,
Thats quite disappointing.

why would federer withdraw.he has to defend 500 pts..and is fit enough

The J-Train comes back from 2-3 in he tiebreak to clinch it on his 3rd set point. 7-6 (7-5).

STAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!! No, no, no, no, no....

James wins first set in a tie-break - go James - anyone watching the Serena match. How is she playing?

Yello Fuzzy,
Berlin will be tape delayed today at 5:30 PM EST and will cover 4 hours of play.

To no name poster at 8:17 AM,
I read that Roger will play - believe someone forgot to put his name on the list. Also, he said in his presser that he is playing 4 clay tourneys before RG.

Lames gets his 'J' back ( temporarily ) if he wins this match

Vishy, we've just been wondering because he's not on the list of players. Super odd...

Good news,Master Ace..Roger can build on the lead before rg..

TMF Rules,
Serena leads 5-2, serving for the 1st set.

Allez Stan! It is not over yet.

Master Ace
I know, I am salivating just thinking about it
Serena seems like she is cruising , set points at 5-2

I note your sarcasm. No, I didn't say that Rafa will win every tournament for the rest of the year. And - again - Rafa won just 6 games in his last tournement because he was not at his best PHYSICALLY. It was not because of his level of play.

What past experience has taught me is that Rafa's game just keeps getting better year after year. His post clay results may not have resulted in tournament wins - yet, but he CONSISTENTLY reached simi-finals and finals. And this year he won hard court matches against players who he had previously struggled against. He has only one way to go and that's up.

Last question: Who was in the YEC final WITH Federer in 2007? RAFA!
Did he win? No. But he WAS in the final.

We can't FORGET ABOUT WIMBLEDON when Rafa has challenged for the championship two years in a row. Past experience teaches me that the next step for Rafa is the Championship.

Now, read my posts accurately - I said Rafa will be number one BY SEASON'S END.
Happy watching.

6-2 Serena

Kim, I agree, but why does he have to make it so hard on himself... (and on us for that matter!)

serena takes the 1st set relatively easy without working a big sweat, 6-2.

serena takes the 1st set relatively easy without working a big sweat, 6-2.

First Rafa has to hold onto No.2...Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear..Djoker

Withdrew from Hamburg: Gonzalez, Ancic, Ferrero, Nalbandian, Haas, Hewitt, and Baghdatis.

wow that alot of withdrawal from hamburg. my two favourite players arent playing. No gonzalez, No nalbandian means no point in watching hamburg

TOF Hope you are enjoying the women's match you lucky person you. This match is quite entertaining.

Everyone is on their games today as the board is quite funny. YF you never cease to make me laugh.

Disappointing about Gonzo I guess his hamstring injury is a worse than first thought. Whagt injury does Youzhny have besides his head. I mean that in a nice way.

Harini: Carlos did go out with Flavia for over 3 years and they had a house together in Switzerland and dog called Brutus. But for some reason he started seeing an Spainish soap actress/tv presenter in May last year and the relationship ended after Wimbledon. His results apart from winning Umag and doing well at the USO his results have been rather disappointing to say the least. But Flavia has been doing ok.

Vishy,
Assuming Roger wins Rome and Novak wins today:

Roger 7200 points
Rafael 5435 points
Novak 4850 points

However, Roger got a lot of points to defend due to being in finals at every tourney he played last year until Paris.

Master Ace,

Yah.Roger is peaking at the right time...We are entering into Roger season after RG

Master Ace, since you seem to be a wizzard with the ranking points, can you estimate Stan's ranking after this week? I heard about a possible top 15, but that seems like a big jump.

sorry about the double post there.
stan with the double break. I'm thinking 3 sets here. I'm predicting that James will lay off a little in the second and let stan do all the hard work, and then come out firing in the 3rd and take the match.

"Last question: Who was in the YEC final WITH Federer in 2007? RAFA!
Did he win? No. But he WAS in the final."

Mrs. Tennis,
Final for 2007 YEC was b/w Roger and David Ferrer. Roger beat Rafa in the semifinals. Ferrer beat Rafa in round robin play earlier in the week to win the group.

And that was the most one sided match b/w Roger and Rafa6-4 6-1 i guess

Thanks for the correction.

no Gonzo?
no Ancic?
NO NALBANDIAN?

disappointing.

anyone know what is up with Mario?
is it his graduation? let's hope so, don't want another illness or injury to add to the list.

Why did Ancic, Ferrero and Nabaldian withdraw? Didn't think any of them was injured?

G'morning

The Chunk-of-Man named Stan is up a break over James in the second set.

That big chest really puts more heat on his OHBH. It really is a great shot.

Nalbandian has been complaining of arm pain (due to a pinched nerve in his back?) throughout the last few clay events.

Serena has taken a bit of a nap...0-3 in the second

Swiss Viking,
Top 15 is possible for Stan but,IMO, he needs to make it to Saturday at least.
