Phpcik4gxpm Hey Tribe!  I can't believe it's already May and the clay season is in full swing.  I just got back from two weeks in Poland and England, and I can assure you that the Harrods in Heathrow Airport already had a Wimbledon table right out front with towels, blankets, t-shirts for the whole family, and little bags.  They seem quite affordable until you do the conversion from pounds to dollars in your head (sigh).

The tennis mentions weren't quite as prolific in Poland, but I was quite surprised to find the bar pictured at right when wandering around the gorgeous town square in Wroclaw. I would have been less surprised to find a Wimbledon bar in Krakow, which is full of British tourists drawn by lower prices and budget flights, but Wroclaw is relatively free of foreign tourists in spite of being at least as beautiful.  I highly recommend both cities, which feature beautiful old city centers.  As you go further out, old architecture is intermingled with Communist-era cement block buildings, frequently decorated with football fan graffiti.

I did not go into the Wimbledon bar, but I did eat and drink plentifully, enjoying Polish sausages, pastries, and pierogi by the dozens.  The first thing I did when I got back was wolf down a salad; they're not so much for fresh leafy greens over there.  Luckily, I worked off all my food by wandering all over the town and climbing multiple church towers.  Not recommended for those with a fear of heights is Mary Magdalen in Wroclaw.  You can climb up to a tiny bridge that links the two towers at the very top; in the old days, penitents would stay out there and pray.

If you've also been traveling, feel free to share your stories and send me your photos!  Thanks to those of you who sent in things before I left -- I will be using them soon.  As always, this is your dedicated OT thread, so take a break from musings on clay below.

First again!

Not a bad effort Papo and I am second. Guess everyone is busy.

Heidi,
Seems you've been having a wonderful time. I love to travel too. Thanks sharing stories about your trip.

How's it going Aussie Ange? Do you have a favorite left in the draw?

Oops. Shouldn't talk about tennis matches in the OT thread.

Heidi, have you ever been to Prague? Beatiful city. They call it the city of spires, because if you get a view of the skyline you can see so many buildings and old churches with spires. There is a part of the city with brand new malls and all the usual things you find in a modern city and there is the old historic part which is beautiful and fun to take a walk through.

I lived in Bavaria for a few years and it was just a short drive to the Czech border. Since by law almost everything is closed on Sundays in Germany, sometimes I'd take a drive with a friend into the Czech Republic since they have no such laws and everything is open.

Heidi
glad to see you are back from your travels. and that you had a great trip .
isn't Heathrow a trip ? I hope i never have to go through that airport again
sadly - it seems to be the gateway to the rest of Europe from here
but - well you are right , the Harrod's there is ok - at least to pass the time

as for travels - I am not really going anywhere exciting this summer
maybe a rip to the Napa Valley - but that is about it
and that is tentative at best

oops
headless at 9:48 was me
sorry - different computer :)

Hey Papo. I have never been to Prague, but my friend who has been there looked at my photos and told me that they look kind of like Prague. It sounds great.

Thanks Beth! I actually kind of like Heathrow. I like the energy and the people-watching. But the food's so darn expensive.

Heidi- guess the long lines and security
as well as the running to gates at the last minute because they did not announgce assigned gates early
coupled with all those guys with automatic weapons
just did not work for me
sadly , that is the only part of London I have ever been to
one of these days , I really must see London properly
course, I will need to save my money
as Monte Carlo and Barcelona are on the top of my list

I always have this feeling about people who live in other parts of the world that they lead different lives to me. But I guess we all do the same things like sleep, eat, go out with friends. And I love travelling and looking forward to my hols at the end of July. So when people talk or show photos of their country I get quite excited.

Papo I am hoping Nico can go a little further. But that is for Day 5 on the other thread.

yup yup yup Heidi, the conversion from pounds to dollars is enough to give one a convulsion. My relatives in England are constantly poking fun at the decline of my precious dollar. But I don't care, I wouldn't trade living in the U.S. for Her Royal Highness's country. England remains a visit-only country. I hope to make Wimby some day tho.

Beating Nico would be really tough for Nole. In fact, Nico would be more fresh as Gonzy withdrew in the scheduled R16 match.

Caught this classic 1978 piece by the great great Frank Deford on Jimmy Connors... i think SI opening up its archive online has been the greatest boon to office slackers since... er.. minesweeper...

totally awesome...

Gidday from Downunder! First time for me here - I've been reading all your posts for some time now and wanted to tell you how much I've enjoyed them - Thanks!

Marley: You're most welcome. Welcome to the forum.

Hi Beth,

It doesn't work for me either...and I agree that Heathrow is possibly the most unpleasent airport in the world (actually I didn't like Bangkok much) but the hightened security is sadly there for a very good reason!!!

I was once stopped from boarding a PanAm plane (shows my age) at JFK because I had a visa for Jordan in my passport..so I have bad memories of your 'hub' too!!!

Next exciting travel for me? Wales. I can happily expect to pack for rain!!!!

Welcome, Marley. Mornin' everyone. . . I'm just waiting for Rosia and Asad to log-in with posts. Sweet post Heidi, I knew you were going off and seeing this made me smile, welcome back! FYI, I just finished a "living legends" post in keeping with ESPN's theme of the week, but I decided that this time, I'd pick five people who could have been living legends (a la Borg, Sampras, Laver, Navratilova etc) but aren't. Should be up later in the day. It's early in the morning here and raining, Cowboy Luke is asleep and Lisa is still traveling (it's been just me and Luke this week), so I have a little time. I'd love to say something about Heathrow etc., but as I'm preparing to travel to the Slams myself, I don't even want to think about it. And especially not Heathrow. Ugh.

Welcome to the twibe marley. i'm from Downunder aswell.

Heidi,

Good to hear that you enjoyed your trip to Poland and Heathrow. You are the first person who actually compliments Heathrow. The extension of terminal 5 was a commercial and PR disaster, some bags are still lost in transition. Heathrow scores badly in polls among travellers for aforementioned reasons (security checks, lost baggage, poor customer service, long queues, delays, expensive food and travel into town costs a fortune). Just wondering, which airport in the US is hated by travellers?

Blake and Stan up in 15 minutes.

blake to open serve. Maybe it's time to put up the new C.C Pete.

Jungleboy,
Rosangel has the new CC up now.

On Rafa:
Anyone who has been watching Rafa play this season can see that he is on another level. As far as the JC match is concerned - it was clear that if Rafa had not had an injury to his FEET he would have won the match despite the level of JC's play. Rafa's play was a cut above JC who played well. I believe that this match presents the clear cut case that JC didn't beat Rafa, Rafa lost. Even injured as he was, he still out played Ferrero.

Now, the "IT" factor that Rafa has that the rest in the field struggle mightily with is his ability to remain CONSISTENT - game after game, match after match, tournament after tournament. JC lost in the next round of play! So where was the great victory in his round with an injured Rafa? Rafa does not play hit or miss tennis. Rafa is consistently playing at a high level.

Rafa will come roaring back - win Hamburg, win Roland Garros, win Wimbledon and become the number one Tennis Player by season's end.
He's just got "IT" like that.

I'm in Split, I arrived just in time for the holiday of their patron saint. Unfortunately, local boy Ancic lost and Hajduk got killed by Dinamo. Heidi, at first I thought this photo was taken here in sunny Split, but evidently you had good weather, too.
Thanks to Rosangel for the photo of moj Mario in her post - was that yesterday? I have jet lag still.

Metro, I'm American but as a traveller, I really hate the hassles of JFK the most. It's the only airport I know where you check in for your flight and are forced to carry your own checked luggage over to the security point. Plus, I think I got scammed by airport personnel the other day, missed a flight because they told me I needed to get a microchip for my dog to simply change planes in Germany. Nobody asked in Germany, and of course nobody asked here in Croatia.

PLUS, JFK does not have the equivalent of the Heathrow Express - getting out there can be a nightmare.

Welcome back, Heidi. Its good to see a Deuce Club thread up.

Whoa, hang on a minute. Jet Boy loses and now he's going to win Hamburg and Wimbledon? I don't see that happening. In fact, it's up in the air whether Nadal will win his fourth French Open.
We all saw what happens when Federer closes the net and works a point against Rafa... 4-0 lead in the second set of their final in Mante Carlo. If Federer can keep his focus on winning and not outhitting Nadal, we have a new French Open champ.

That said, Fed v. Karlovic was the ugliest match I saw yesterday. By far.
Roddick looked ascendant, at times, just getting tons of balls back, serving out of a tree and generally wearing down a home favorite (Bolelli). That match point was gorgeous! I like what Andy has been doing this year. If he would flatten out his approach shots i think he'd have more success at the net, even though he'd find himself closer to the service line than the net. Probably never happen, but it would help him at Wimbledon, too.

Safina, "she hasn't played well since the AO." Reality check to Safina, you will never be half the player the Queen is and you will never win a slam. You're a second tier player who beat a great champion ONLY because she was off her beautiful game. So stop the trash talking. I'll be glad when that picture of the Queen on the home page is gone for good. I'm tired of looking at it. She will come back. Go Justine, world's #1!

oops, sorry, wrong thread

Whoa, hang on another minute. Ref: your comments = my point exactly. Rafa's CONSISTENCY is exactly what enabled him to rally back FROM 4-0 down in the 2nd set of MC!!! Don't forget he did it twice - came back from 4-0 down - in back to back tournaments. The key to remember is that Rafa has the ability to lift the level of his game to do what is necessary to WIN.

That said, I am a Federer fan also, but Federer can focus all he wants to, however, when it's all said and done, Rafa is on a level above right now and rising higher. Injury stopped him for a minute. But the way he's playing right now, he's going all the way. And that's just the way "IT" is.

sweet. good luck with that.

Tina,

lucky you to be in Split in May. Great city, I went to Croatia and loved the palace, old town and market. So how is Hajduk doing this season (it is the club with the goat mascot, isn't it?).

It is one of the obvious question posed by most travellers why JFK does not have a train service into downtown NY

Is someone trying to be Samantha Elin because I don't think the real Samantha would say that about another player at least I hope not.

And Safina never trashed talk Henin, what a stupid thing to claim. LOL

Well done to her for beating Serena, btw, nice to see she wasn't completely done after her win over Henin, and quite a TB thriller in the third. Respect.

Metro - in answer to your question
I think LAX is the worst airport in the US
confusing - long lines - horrible traffic - inevitable delays- slow security checks
a nightmare
particularly if you are so unfortunate as to fly on Mexicana
My one suggestion there - don't !

Wecome , Marley !
