USO CC Day 3, After Dark
Posted 08/27/2008 @ 9 :17 PM

Jj

Good evening. It's again time to move your comments over to this fresh thread, as the Crisis Center from earlier in the day has filled up, and is slow to load. Today the last men's first-round matches have been played, along with some women's second-round matches. J0-Wilfried Tsonga returned with a four-set win over Santiago Ventura, while Novak Djokovic took care of Arnaud Clement in straight sets. Jelena Jankovic eventually fought off Sofia Arvidsson, in an extended three-set battle. Marin Cilic took five sets to dispatch Julien Benneteau, which the Tribe was forced to track via a live scoreboard.

The big match for the remainder of the evening, after Lindsay Davenport progresssed in straight sets over Alisa Kleybanova, will be Andy Roddick taking on Fabrice Santoro. The players are due on court any moment now.

Please keep comments focused on the day's tennis. Once the day's matches are over, some off-topic discussions are OK.

ha ha

Andy honestly that shirt...and those duffer pants the other night at the CHampions ceremony... dont u have a supermodel fiancee who can help you dress yourself?? ;)

ah ah

Tim on Top! :)

where else would he be Arun?

go andy. fabrice is not acceptable for this tennis fan.

I need some wine and popcorn lol ...

yeah first again, what can I say, you peeps are asleep at the wheel...

Perhaps Roddick was looking to compete with Santoro's shirt-of-many-candy-colours attire - only to find that Fabrice is the more tastefully dressed of the two tonight.

I can't help wondering how many more times we will see Santoro play at any Slam. Hope he's playing well.

wow two lacoste players. Anyone got complaints about that tonight?

ok i should have known

What is roddick wearing under his shorts - what I mean is, I thought I saw bandages on his legs. But maybe it's something more creative a la Agassi. I don't recall any news of leg injuries.

Russ, from the prev thread:
i think you mean seann william scott vs. emilio estevez?

I always laugh at slow motion replays of the fastest serves of the moment.

nT - no I am not full of self loathing. I find that really insulting even if you were joking.

I am over 40 and pretty fit and healthy. I would give anything to play a sport at the highest level. They are professional sportspeople.

Must say I love JJ's dress.

A-Rod breaks to start with.. And holds for a 2-0 lead.

Harini: Sure, I'll give you that. But as a Maidenist, I choose Bruce ;)

Ros: Tsk tsk. What are you doing looking under Roddick's shorts? ;)

No matter what - you gotta luv Roddick's eagerness on court - he always looks over involved during the matches - and way too much energy flying off in all directions.

Ros, really, cheating on Rafa during the Open with Andy Roddick ?

what will the RNKAS say about such apalling behavior?

naughty t, you are amazing,crack me up,family pack? lol

Sadly -- because I like Roddick -- I think he will be lucky to make it to the fourth round.

Low ebb, it seems to me.

ahh - here I am with my glass of wine
hoping to see a good match between Andy and the Magician

Sarah: High flow, perhaps?

AA it was a joke about the what the politically correct people would say about you for criticising a female athlete for being overweight.
but hey .. be offended if you like. In my experience it is the norm here. good luck it all.

beth may I have a glass? Im all out and the store is closed! terrible planning on my part...

mmm i love what andy has on,the black,santoro,mmm,too french tres chic,what can i say?

Roddick's playing quite well tonight.

Ros: I'd hazard a guess its boxer briefs, the longer kind, Novack is wearing them under his shorts too. Ummm don't ask how i know heheheh.

I think its due to the lightweight fabric of said shorts that the boys need a little more umm coverage so to speak.

I'd just like to add, without sounding hateful, that i totally hate Ted Robinson...like poison!!

AM no you are incorrect I am not funny at all.
Roddick looking good but hoping that Santoro ups his level a bit. Two breaks for Andy.
Maybe Rachael will get to keep watching tennis after all this year

of course , tim
It is a nice crisp chardonnay
hope you like it

Neil: If you are looking to form a Ted Robinson Haternation, I would like to apply for citizenship, please.

poor Fabrice, his time has come but lets hope he gets a second win quickly...

roddick needs to wear a shirt that's not so loose. but if it were a tighter shirt, it needs to be a different style or he'd look like he were wearing a halloween skeleton costume.

ALLEZ FABRICE!!! he was wincing a lot that last game...hope he's all right.

hehe all right Russ. i'll say emilio, you say bruce :)

naughty t ok, if you say so.

andy is playing well but he looks a hot mess-- he needs to burn the striped moo moo looking thing he's wearing

"What is roddick wearing under his shorts "

Compression shorts. Like neil in toronto said, Nole was wearing them in Beijing as well.

I do hope Fabrice can pick it up a bit
I would like to see a match
I have been away all day
I did see a brief highlight that Djokovic twisted his ankle , but finished the match moving all right

Andy's playing out of his mind. The backhand is really working. He's being aggressive, hitting from on or inside the baseline. I hope he can keep it up.

Ted is just about setting up the talent with softballs and compliments, nice but gets dull, fast...

Gulbis is gonna send Roddick home, i have a feeling... would acutall love to see Djoker have to take on Roddick and the night crowd in the quarters... very interesing@!

Rosangel - I think he has 'compression' shorts on to protect the muscles at the top of his thighs. He had a hamstring injury playing Murray in Miami a couple of years ago and played a Davis Cup tie soon after that didn't help it so it may be something he has to be careful about.

AM-I'm with you. I like the black on Roddick. IMO, it's the sharpest ensemble any of the men have worn. I liked Federer's clothes,too.

Syd,

Are you there? I saw your post after I posted my own, but was delighted to find your inquiry. I haven't been able to spend too much time here lately, but hope to be back in full battle (or nuisance) mode this week. I'll be back to shoot the s&^t after the Roddick match.

--Liron

Russ: done...anyone else wanna join?? membership has its rewards and is apparently bi-partisan. :)

please: who is the commentator w/the Eng/Irish/Oz accent?

Nonak is dating the gorgeous Portuguese javelin thrower? or were they kidding around- she really is lovely

Is it just me or is Santoro looking like he is no relly engaged in this match. Andy i playing well tho growingin confidence by the minute.

Wow... If I was Kleybanova, I would be real depressed reading some of todays TW comments. Wonder if Lindsay had such a hard rap when she was bigger.

What's amazing about how Roddick is playing is that he's winning not so much on the strength of his aces but how well he's seeing the ball from the baseline. I haven't seen this kind of play from Roddick in a long time.

Tim, you still think Roddick is more painful to watch than Kleybanova??

Neil: Do I have to be bi-partisan? If necessary, I will do it, but it's not my first choice.

I am laughing so hard about the striped moo moo
Andy always wears his shirts too baggy

but maybe that loose shirt is part of the loose shoulder mojo he has been looking for
in those long forgotten ads
He certainly seems to have found it tonight

they just said that Santoro and Gasquet are playing dubs together
I missed them in the draw
when or who do they play ?

jb, i think she's Paraguain (sic), and was a runner up Miss Paraguay in '06, so she's you know well rounded.

LOL compression shorts, like spanx?? to smooth out one's figure??

though i wish andy,just for once,would dare to wear something a little more tight fitting perhaps?,more scupltured to his body shape,me wonders at times,what is really under there!

Liron!!

Great. Your sagacious/acerbic wit is needed here.

Hehehe Russ, if you and i can belong to the same club, its kinda already bi-partisan.

crazy- Roddick played this way last year at the USO against Johansson- and against Fed too but Fed wasn't playing around that night

*I'd just like to add, without sounding hateful, that i totally hate Ted Robinson...like poison!!*

neil,
tell this euro guy, what is this robinson like? what are his qualities?

Neil; a lot of them wear them; to hold things together sotospeak.

Beth - I love you dearly but please don't talk about Andy and mojo!!

yeah jbradhunter, I was thinking of last year, though I didn't see much of Dubai. He wasn't this crisp at the AO/Wimbledon/summer HC swing, for sure.

Neil: Good point, brother.

Yes, Andy is doing fantastically against a 35 yr. old guy half his height. Go, Andy!

aussie margo - Andy is as fit as a fiddle - whats under there looks great in magazine covers.... at least I think so, unless photoshop was at work

crazy, its a toss up right now, but id vote for Roddick once the ball is in play, especially when he chips that cute little slice backhand lol

i dont know why the Americans need to try be or look like an NBA star or baseball player or whatever, cant they be happy to be tennis players?

1 down, 2 to go...steady there.
Go Andy!

oh she's from Paraguay? okay-- is Rossana de los Rios still in the tourney? I just like her-- I have this memory of the junior Paraguayan team w/ Rosanna playing the junior German team led by Marketa Kochta?-- junior Fed cup of some sort-- red clay-- Rosanna was a so good on clay

Bismar(in)c[ilic}k, gosh that took a while to type, He has a grating voice and has spent the better part of the day chastising Tracey Austin on how many burrito's she's eaten today, and making slightly obvious jabs at the state of the wta. He's not even particularly good looking or seems to know anything about tennis. He covered diving at the olympics with the MOST ANNOYING COMMENTATOR ever. That chick made my ears bleed.

compression shorts- my son wears them under his baseball uniform and practice clothes. Apparently, they have many functions including keeping the muscles warm.
Wikpedia: More recently, jockstraps have fallen out of favour with young athletes, and garments such as compression shorts have seen an increase in popularity, arguably because of their comparable function and less embarrassing looks.

Umm, Andy might need to double up on his to keep things in place. (perhaps there would be less "tugging")

Go Andy!

Sorry Neil and Russ I just don't have any hate to spare at the moment. Besides I just can't go back to the pretence of being bi.

sorry - those were illtimed ads that year
compression shorts - are those what Andy keeps grabbing at when he digs at his crotch
sorry - but that is a really disgusting habit that he has

I would love to see a djoko / andy night match too
that place would be rockin
hope that can happen

And Russ, i won't tell your wife anything, what happens at the IHTRFC, stays there LOL

More importantly luvten, can i get a pair with a little pump so i actually have quad muscles to keep warm?? Maybe just on one side?

Hey Tim: no cheating....not my type at all:-) Not even remotely. Merely curiosity, because the things are very obvious when he is moving. Perhaps more so because the shorts are black.

well i will forget was andy has,or has not got under those massive t-shirts he wears,tonight the A Rod,has brought his game out big time,love the way he is moving around the court.

Andy is playing very well this evening
he breaks again to open the second

Mats Wilander is comentating on my stream and being very complimentary about Andy's style of play, which he hasn't always been. Also said that Pat Mac for 15 weeks of the year could be a better coaching option than someone full time.

oh - Andy
please don't try the lame approach shots now
you have been playing so well

beth, i now notice that disgusting habit of andy's ever since you first mentioned it.
ohhhh fabrice. work your magic man!

i really hope ernie wins if he's up against roddick. andy's playing really well but there's something about the way he walks so fast on court and just goes from serve to serve quickly that annoys me. maybe i'm just too used to rafa taking his sweet old time, i dunno, but roddick just seems in a rush all the time.

he's definitely on fire though. fabrice's magic is falling short.

Poor Santoro. Roddick is having his fun tonight, but I think he will have a very difficult time with Gublis. Ok, I can't stand the ball bashing so good nite all. I'm putting all my hopes into Caroline. Go Caroline, Scandinavia's #1!

neil,
*Bismar(in)c[ilic}k, gosh that took a while to type, *

you can also use Bis, Biz, Bissy, Bizzer, Bizmeister, Bismarck.

thanks for the info on robinson. on eurosport you never get to see the commentators. you just listen to their voices while they commentate one match after the other.

kirsty; a

re you watching on ESPN streaming Justin? because if that is Wilanders, he is creaming all over Andy in the most obsequious manner. ug.

when Andy plays this way I think he should definitely win more slams...

Even if these goes the distance, it'll still be over in an hour or so, man Andy plays so fast, I mean Rafa is sloooooooowwww, but this is a little reedeculus!

If there would be less tugging then i wish andy would take Rafa shopping

It appears to be an 'Andy' habit - Murray does it as well.

Neil-compression shorts with a pump. Hmmm, I'm sure there would be a market for that!

Neil: That's what I was counting on.

nT: Well you seem to have a lot of hate coming in right now, maybe you can spend some of that on Ted?

harini - sorry I brought that ugly habit to your attention

Andy does seem to rush through the games - kind of like Agassi used to do
it did seem to work well when Agassi did it - he would run his oppenent side to side
and the poor guy could barely catch his breath before he had served the next point
I often think that speeding up might have the same effect for Rafa
I mean his opponents are run ragged these days - particularly on clay

Which then begs the question naughty, is the rear tug, or the front tug less appealing? If one has to tug, which way should it be?

Syd and Kirsty: I'm watching thru' the same stream too.. if this continues, I'm contemplating abt watching the match on mute ;-)

It's so sad that Fabrice is going to lose today. I love the way he hits every shot with disdain.

Ros, i do want to believe you, but I may in fact have to file a misdemeanor petition with the RNKAS, this kind of 'curiosity' just doenst look good at such a high profile event...

your hearing will be scheduled over the weekend... Im the only committee member and will dish out all appropriate admonishments and or punishments :)

One thing I must say about Roddick as a player is that he has grown on me over time - it's the competitive energy that I like most about him. I'm not the greatest fan of his game, but I like what he brings to the game overall, and the desire he has shown even when overshadowed by others, so it's good to see him playing well tonight.

He is also very amusing in interviews that I've seen.

lol luvten, i was just thinking that since i'm having my left calf implant done, it might be a nice balance if i had perhaps a right inflatable quad muscle. Otherwise i'd be running around in circles.

This match doesn't look like its gonna be competitive, so I am off to catch some zzzz - Night all

ladies- sometimes a man just has to readjust the "situation" down there after all the running- really can't be avoided

Wikpedia: More recently, jockstraps have fallen out of favour with young athletes, and garments such as compression shorts have seen an increase in popularity, arguably because of their comparable function and less embarrassing looks.
~~~~~
Blessedly, F-Lo has not yet gotten the memo.
Drats, I didn't even have time to uncork a bottle before this match started looking like a beatdown.
I think we need ARod to lead TW, then Ted.
beth, you're so right, he does remind me of agassi with the fast walk. with agassi it just seemed his "thing" but i feel like it has sort of increased with andy over the years. or maybe i'm just noticing it now 'cos i'm annoyed. i dunno.
sounds like the match is kind of meh at the mo...i'm not in the general area of the TV and looks like fabrice just got broken. i might just call it a night after this set.
allez fabrice!
For anyone in the States who's interested, Joe Biden will be speaking in about 5 minutes....
Hi Syd - not sure if I'm watching ESPN it's a sopcast channel but I am wondering whether Wilander wants a coaching job. I've never heard him compliment Roddick this much.
Is the Roddick game as one sided it looks like on the scoreboard?
