Your Call, Aug. 20 08/20/2008 - 10:52 AM

Smallyourcall_5 Mornin', everyone. I'm going out to the US Open qualies today, to pick up my credentials and poke around a little. Not much more to add for now, except to say that I'll be posting later in the day, and expect to bump into some of you out at the BJKNTC this afternoon. Tomorrow, we have the US Open official draw ceremony, and then Friday I'll be back out at Flushing Meadow. Enjoy today's tennis action and comment on it here. Also, keep your eyes open for Thursday's Deuce Club posts, where I'm going to ask those of you who will be attending the US Open, and may want to hook up with fellow TWibe membere, to make yourselves know.

Posted by crazyone 08/21/2008 at 12:54 AM

evil grin, if that's true, it's Phelps who has all the class.

Aussiemarg...er no. We're going to disagree about this, but Rafa's comeback was majorly helped along by Roger.

Russ, at least that was a positive memory!

Posted by Al 08/21/2008 at 12:56 AM

OK I get you NP but are you referring Tennis Fan as TN ?

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 12:56 AM

etobicake, hi, no i am home from hosptial now,got home on monday, been there for three weeks,my legs and ankles started to awell, coun't hardly walk, did every test, scan, blood test in the world, thank god its not a vascular problem, all tests proved negative, home now my dr has be on drugs to stop the awelling and pain killers,i have to ring him,if the siutation gets worse,i have to see him, in a month,i am ok,gee i was born in sicily, nothing gets us down!

Posted by evil grin 08/21/2008 at 12:57 AM

crazyone, Its truth and nothing but the truth. Any suggestions on whom Amanda could date?

Posted by Sam 08/21/2008 at 12:57 AM

crazyone: Thanks. Now the rest of us Fed fans are feeling that pain ...

Posted by Silvery Grey Metallic Russ (45T.OSU_EVAS) 08/21/2008 at 01:00 AM

Sam: Remember Rafa serving 5-2 in the 4th set tiebreak at Wimbledon '08? How about Rafa serving 3-2 in the 5th set of Wimbledon '07?

There... now isn't that better?

Posted by NP 08/21/2008 at 01:01 AM

Yeah, Al. I meant to type "TF." Sorry for the typo.

And sorry for the long posts. I generally try to be patient but TF really doesn't seem to understand why he/she needs to make better points for his/her argument. It gets a little frustrating when I have to address the same points over and over.

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 01:01 AM

guys you really live in that cave of yours, come out and play, have some fun no?

Posted by Silvery Grey Metallic Russ (45T.OSU_EVAS) 08/21/2008 at 01:02 AM

crazyone: Exactly... I agree... that 5-1 blown lead was the nail in Roger's 2008 season. Never the same player from that day forth. But let's not talk about that. Wasn't the weather in Boston lovely today? And see my post to Sam from moments ago...

Posted by etobicoke 08/21/2008 at 01:02 AM

Talking about Phelps, he really started early:

Nole Love Watch: So apparently that Paraguayan javelinista that was rumored to be hooking up with Nole denied that there's anything gone on. And she's getting blasted by Paraguayan papers, who all say that she only went to the Olympics to find a boyfriend (she failed to qualify in her event).

*runs back into the closet to rock in the fetal position...sblily, where's my binky!"

Etobicake! Love it.

russ the memory's of life, they are soothing!

Posted by Silvery Grey Metallic Russ (45T.OSU_EVAS) 08/21/2008 at 01:06 AM

Good, Sam: Remember friend, the pressure's off... we can relax now. Heavy is the head that wears the crown. Let Rafa be the spotter for a few lifts. Fed needs a rest day to let the muscles grow, and the he'll be able to wear a heavier crown.

Posted by evil grin 08/21/2008 at 01:06 AM

Federer is the past. Rafa with his tiring & demanding game ain't gonna last long. Nole is the future.
Read somewhere that Federer these days has thoughts about marriage and family and all that jazz! Boy, how the "mighty" have fallen?!:-D
When he is packing up , he can take Roddick along with him too.

Posted by crazyone 08/21/2008 at 01:07 AM

Russ: sigh. Just...sigh.
I am impressed Fed recovered to win the second set. If I remember correctly, he got broken, broke back, broke again, had a 4-1 lead, which he then of course lost, but this time it went to a TB which he won.

Posted by etobicoke 08/21/2008 at 01:07 AM

aussie, you down under blokes & blokesses have issues wiff legs. In odur news Hewitt decided to do the hip surgery.

Posted by NP 08/21/2008 at 01:07 AM

Russ, just so you know I actually paraphrase others' words in my responses, so not all the words are really "my own." Sorry if that makes your word count game a bit more difficult. :)

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 01:09 AM

np i strongly suggest have a break mate, typing those posts of yours must be giving you a headache by now, i know when i have to send a post to sam,or about sam,god it takes forever, just to type his mantra!!!!!

Posted by evil grin (Nole the 08 USO CHAMP) 08/21/2008 at 01:09 AM

C Note: Nole deserves better than a javelin thrower who is half a decade older than him!

crazyone: Stop it, stop it! Onwards and forwards, child. We in the Fed Army do not tolerate desolation for long. I will allow you to mourn for today, but I expect you to be ready come USO.

If dude can get his head in the game, we're okay.

Complete side note and more off-topic than usual... any recommendations for good Indian buffet in Boston/Cambridge?

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 01:12 AM

yes the aussie battler has to have surgery on his,has been putting it off,but he can't go on,although its not major hip surgery, hope he will be alright

Why would he be in the village as opposed to the hotel a la Mr I Am Your Good Neigbour Cardigan, heh heh.

Posted by Silvery Grey Metallic Russ (45T.OSU_EVAS) 08/21/2008 at 01:19 AM

Is it just me, or is playing beach volleyball indoors contrary to the spirit of the game?

And not that I'm complaining, but why do the women play in those tiny bikinis anyway?

Posted by sblily (Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!) 08/21/2008 at 01:19 AM

Man, the US is killing Cuba in Women's volleyball right now. They're up two games to none. Considering they couldn't even win a game versus Cuba in pool play this is an awesome turnaround.

Posted by NP 08/21/2008 at 01:26 AM

Russ: According to AVPer Holly McPeak, the women wear those tight, tiny bikinis 'cause they don't want sand to get inside their outfits.

Posted by C Note -- Modern Cool Nerd (70% Nerd, 61% Geek, 26% Dork) 08/21/2008 at 01:27 AM

Russ -- I played volleyball for 8 years and as much as I hate to admit it, it is way more comfortable playing in skin tight gear. I played indoor and we used to play in shorts and t-shirts and by the end of it we were in really short compression shorts. The range of motion is better and you just feel faster. And it was so much more comfy. As for beach, obviously it's part of the beach culture, but again, it's more comfortable. And with the sand it's easier to wipe sand off your body than it is off a suit.

Posted by etobicoke 08/21/2008 at 01:27 AM

"
And not that I'm complaining, but why do the women play in those tiny bikinis anyway?
"

I have to say i was mucho disappointed -- all Owlimpic beach volley girls I saw had anemic flat butts and otherwise uninteresting bodies. Tennis players were much sexier! How does that make sense.

Posted by evil grin (Nole the 08 USO CHAMP) 08/21/2008 at 01:28 AM

sblily: What were the Paraguayan papers thinking? As if these are the good ol' Jane Austen days when a lady's sole concern is to find a suitable husband (read boy friend here)!

etobicoke: Ah! So you think thats the reason Nole stayed at the village? So no innocent reasons like Rafa's (i like to enjoy the atmosphere, no?)?! Pity Roger could not capitalize on his hotel-room solitude!

Russ, re: USO '08, I don't think I've ever been less hopeful for Fed at a slam since he became the mighty mighty. That includes FO '08.

As for Indian buffets...I haven't had a buffet around here, I think...I'm somewhat disappointed with the Indian restaurants in Cambridge.

All right, all right, I'm thinking of the voodoo dance, that never fails to put a smile on my face and a "WTF!" on my lips...

Posted by Silvery Grey Metallic Russ (45T.OSU_EVAS) 08/21/2008 at 01:39 AM

crazyone: Yeah, I have no expectations this USO. It's liberating. It's going to be impossible for Nadal to have as good a year as he had next year, so there is always hope.

We've tried the two restaurants in Harvard Square, which were each pretty good; and also the one on Mass Ave, I think near the Pearl Art supplies (Shalimar, perhaps?)... but Celine was craving Masala Dosa, and me Chana, so we might end up in Cambridge.

Posted by Ali C 08/21/2008 at 01:53 AM

First things first: Allez Alize! Way to overcome a tough Srebotnik. 10 aces is VERY good. (9 DFs is NOT so good, eek.)

Second, please don't steamroll through the field at New Haven only to have no energy left by the 2nd round of the USO. I know you're young and think you can do that sort of thing, but you are just coming off a 357-hour flight from Beijing. I will be perfectly happy with a SF loss at New Haven to Amelie in exchange for making the SF at the USO. All part of the grand strategy, you see.

(But you have to beat Hantuchova for your own good, and you HAVE to beat Wozniacki just to keep her well and properly terrified of you.)

Posted by Violetta 08/21/2008 at 01:55 AM

I'm going to bed too, y'all. It's been fun. I can't wait for the USO draw and the obligatory baked goods discussion to follow. Cheers!

Posted by jewell 08/21/2008 at 02:04 AM

Morning!

gauloises: far above, Kat Stratford = 10 things I hate about you?

Choice between Rafa and a puppy: oh dear. Puppy. Sorry, Rafa.

Court surfaces: more grass! more clay! (yes, I admit it, guilty of wanting Rafa-Roger finals all year)

On court coaching: not for me, one of the things I like about tennis and snooker is the slow breakdown of an opponent's mind, leading to errors. I like to see players fight their own way out of this. Presumably the discussion of a match beforehand includes strategy for various scenarios.

Women playing five sets at GS: all for it, but it should come in gradually to give current players a chance to train for that. Equal money for equal play!

Rafa's grunt: Well, I like it.

Novak's sex life: don't care, but when more people talk about that than your tennis, you will.

Johnny Mac: love you just as you are, don't ever change.

Posted by evil grin (Nole the 08 USO CHAMP) 08/21/2008 at 02:27 AM

etobicoke: Merci merci.

Posted by rg.nadal 08/21/2008 at 02:32 AM

Jewell: good morning
Good points they were.
Agree with everything you said except that Rafa-Pup coice. What kind of choice exactly you talking about?
This may be a little late to ask, but you are a fan of...?

Posted by jewell 08/21/2008 at 02:38 AM

rg. nadal: Rafa all the way! But I won't tear down or diminish Roger in any way, I love him and his style too, same for Djoko.

It is a difficult choice and Rafa definitely has puppy-like qualities, but 1) I have a husband and 2) I haven't had a dog for five months and I need a dog in my life!

My puppy requirements: cute and intelligent and not a pedigree.

Posted by rg.nadal 08/21/2008 at 02:40 AM

few thoughts fot the USO:
1. How fit is Tsonga?
2. Ferrer badly needs to end his three-match losing streak
3. Amelie please make the most of the lack-of-clear-front-runners situation in the tournament
4. Would Serena win it and go for the no.1 ranking by the year-end?
5. Would Murray win his first slam?
6. How exhuasted are the big three?
7 Would Arod improve over his performance over last year's R8 showing?
8. Would Anna C and Kuznetsova be able to defend all those points they got last year? (I say very unlikely. But hope Anna does)
9. Isn't it high time for JJ to reach a slam final?
10. How will the US players perform attheir home slam (Davenport included)?

Posted by rg.nadal 08/21/2008 at 02:50 AM

jewell: Same sentiments as mine for Rafa and Roger! Frankly not sure for Novak. I feel he deserves all the success that he is getting because of the tough circumstances he had to face early in his life and agree that he is immensely talented, but not his fan. Admire him a lot though. But a fan of both the Andy's!

Posted by jewell 08/21/2008 at 02:52 AM

yay, go Amelie and JJ.

I don't think Murray will win. He might do well though, then again he might get taken down in an early round. I would rather he didn't get to play Rafa. I hate it when they play.

Djoko looks more tired to me than Fed or Rafa - there's an air of fed-up ness about him - I feel he's been punched hard and hasn't quite recovered. If he gets a dangerous match up I feel he might lose early-ish. But I think if any of the top 3 men get on a roll all previous form goes out of the window until they meet. For example, taking Wimbledon, I did not expect Federer's confidence to be seriously affected by the FO against anyone except Rafa in the final. After that match of course it's a different story. I'd still bet on him to reach the final though.

Posted by jewell 08/21/2008 at 02:58 AM

rg.nadal:

kind of guessed you might be a Rafa fan...

Andy Murray is growing on me, but I still have my doubts. I've never been a Roddick fan. I like him as a person but I don't find him terribly exciting to watch.

Djoko, I think I was guilty of hating because he was getting a bit too close to Rafa's heels in the early part of the year and because he beat Roger at the AO (I still have Tursunov issues after he beat Henman all those years ago at Wimbledon) - however, I've become an admirer because he is so gracious at the end of a match, and because he seems to have had his stuffing knocked out since Hamburg - also he has lovely flashing groundstrokes. And nice hair. I like his hair.

Posted by rg.nadal 08/21/2008 at 03:01 AM

jewell: Likes of Gulbis, Nalbandian, & Radek (like last year) can really harass Novak. Something seems to be a little off with novak. May be he is putting too much pressure on himself. But the bronze medal should really motivate him to do well here and the gap between matches should really help him. On the other note though, he too has a lot of points to defend.
I too do not like to see Murray play Rafa, though have to agree that it makes a great match. Murray should be a little cautious in the early rounds and hope he is not in Rafa's quarter.
Somehow beating a fit Federer over a 5-set match still looks a tall order to me unless you have an insanely-in-form Nalbandian around.

Posted by rg.nadal 08/21/2008 at 03:07 AM

jewell: "kind of guessed you might be a Rafa fan..."
From my id i'm sure!:-D
Roddick i think gets too defensive and plays way behind the baseline! For a guy that powerful he has no business to be behind the line at all.
Nole's hair to me seems to me the most suitable for playing a match. Maintainance free and does not sweat. Very practical and i like that gravity-defying state its in! Yep, his graciousness is very admirable. Like that spontaneous applauding after an opponent's spectacular winner.

6 Feet under!

I look around and wonder why
Great changes in earth and sky
Sound of bombs and hot napalm
Killing all with deadly calm.

Greed is good, the rich often say
They don't mind the poor will pay
Droughts and floods, and more disease
Will there be a day when these will cease?

No food, no trees, no more green
Futile wishing for some magic bean
A world awash hunger and in pain
Thirst for dignity continue in vain.

Impure water and unclean air
Why is it that we no more care
All these wars, my heart just twirled
Make me yearn for a peaceful world

Signs of tranquil, no more than a speck of dust
Lost to a barrage of avarice and lust
All this greed, all this malice, makes me wonder
Why bother, all anyway ends up six feet under

Ron: Hi. Whom are you rooting for at the USO?

Posted by rg.nadal 08/21/2008 at 06:34 AM

Sania withdraws with wrist injury. So till now its Hewitt, Ancic and Sania, right?

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 06:36 AM

jewell and rg.nadal:

Totally a Rafa fan too and Roger as my second. I feel the same about Roddick as you jewell. Never really been a fan. I've tried because I too like what I see of his as a person, but just find his game too one-dimensional.

Love Andy Murray, but then I'm born of Scottish parents so I'm a bit biased. I also think Nole does look more tired than Rafa or Roger, which is bizarre. Maybe not Roger as he hasn't played as much tennis, but he shouldn't be looking more tired than Rafa.

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 06:40 AM

rg.nadal:

Hmm, who am I rooting for at the USO? Hmmm, let me think. RAFA of course!!! All the way baby.

On the woman's side I'm leaning towards Dinara because I love how she's really risen in the rankings this year. She's worked really really hard and I believe that kind of dedication deserves reward. There are other woman I have liked more but I don't feel they have worked hard enough to deserve it, like Ana I and JJ for example. Being the USO I'd like Serena to win too, but I just can't bring myself to like her. I've tried. I love Venus but Serena just has something about her that I can't get past.

Sometimes she'll be so endearing and then she'll say something or do something kind of babyish that turns me off. No other woman on tour that can play like her when she's on though, no doubt.

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 06:45 AM

Jacko:

You live in Ireland eh? Have you ever been to Canada? If you ever do you have to go to the province of Newfoundland. It's very Irish. Their accent is even very close to the Irish accent. I am from Nova Scotia, which is New Scotland and my parents are from Scotland. Those two provinces are like a little taste of Ireland and Scotland.

Posted by rg.nadal 08/21/2008 at 06:52 AM

ron: Thats true. When Serena is on she can blow people off the court. Still cannot forget the 07 Aussie Open when she demolished Maria's game. It was good to see Safina play so well. Think she would be fine after all the tennis she played the last few weeks and be ready for the USO. I like that forehand of hers- generates such pace! Ana seems to be fit too (as per her website atleast). She has been playing well at slams since some time and should be well rested. Though would place her after Safina, Dementieva and Serena on the title favourite list.

Do feel that someone like Caroline Wozniacki would have a break-through slam.
Who are your dark horses for the title?

Posted by Jacko (Private Detective) 08/21/2008 at 06:54 AM

ron - no i've never been to canada . . . . my family usually only visit relatives in florida . . . .although seeing as we usually go during the canadian masters . . . i've tried to convince my parents to go via canada and spend a few days there!!
i think we mite do it next year!

rg.nadal - my dark horses or players the top ones would like to avoid early would be . . . . . aleksandra wozniak (tough 1st round), wozniacki, cornet, anna chak (although she could be semi put in favourite due to ranking), szavay, safarova (she seems to be gettin some form back this week), vaidisova (if she's got her head straight) and the chinese shuai peng, li na, zi yan and jie zheng

in terms of favourites i would say Dinara, Elena, Ana (thumb pending), JJ (injury semi-free), and the WS (although apart from venus' semi last year they haven't done paricularly well here in recent years)

Jacko: Forgot to ask you, are you really a private eye?

Posted by Jacko (Private Detective) 08/21/2008 at 07:04 AM

no no no no no . . . ..i'm still a teenager . . . .neil in toronto and i had a convo about how its my dream to be a private eye and that PI's always play tennis and use magnifying glass to check line calls!!!

now its my mantra as i shall try and find stats, facts, etc. faster than everyone . . . .using my PI powers!!!!!!

rg.nadal:

Hmm, my dark horses for the title. Let's see, on the woman's side I'd have to pick Alize Cornet or Agnes Svay(?) and maybe even Wozniaki.

jewell:

I love that you put Alex Wozniak's name in there. She's really been coming on strong this past year moving from outside the top 100 into the top 40. She's a big girl with a big game and with some more confidence I think she can be a top 20 player for sure.

For the men I'd pick Murray for sure as a dark horse and Safin too. Not ready to put Murray into a "favourite" category just yet, even though I really like his game.

Simon and Gulbis are my dark horses to make a great run maybe into the quarters, but not for the title.

Now, whatever happened to guys like Nalbandian, Baghdatis, and Gasquet? They should be in the conversation too but seem to be under-performing.

aussiemarg:

LOL! I'm a man but I hate shopping. You'd like shopping with me because when I go into a store, as soon as I see something I like I buy it and then get the hell out of Dodge. Usually with a salesperson running behind me wanting to know if I wouldn't rather look around some more. No thanks. Even better if what I'm looking for is hanging right there in the window or on a mannequin. I'm outta there.

In reading over some of the posts from last night, sometimes when you see a debate is going around in circles, it's best to agree to disagree and move on. In regards to Rafa he's so cute because he reminds you of a little boy, just doing what he love and the sheer joy he gets from it. That said, I hope Roger win the USO, the draw come out today. I'm pulling for Caroline to have a major break through at the USO. Justine, forever my #1!
