Your Call, Aug. 20 08/20/2008 - 10:52 AM

Smallyourcall_5 Mornin', everyone. I'm going out to the US Open qualies today, to pick up my credentials and poke around a little. Not much more to add for now, except to say that I'll be posting later in the day, and expect to bump into some of you out at the BJKNTC this afternoon. Tomorrow, we have the US Open official draw ceremony, and then Friday I'll be back out at Flushing Meadow. Enjoy today's tennis action and comment on it here. Also, keep your eyes open for Thursday's Deuce Club posts, where I'm going to ask those of you who will be attending the US Open, and may want to hook up with fellow TWibe membere, to make yourselves know.

Posted by rg.nadal 08/21/2008 at 07:49 AM

Jacko: Good luck for your match too?

Posted by rg.nadal 08/21/2008 at 07:52 AM

AM: Just now got a forward message on "Why Women Should Not Take Men Shopping". Damn hilarious. Let me know you email id. I'm sure you would enjoy it.

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 07:56 AM

guys i ave put on leonard choen's 'HALLELUJAH' to soothe my soul!

Posted by Tari 08/21/2008 at 07:56 AM

Hey, Rachael. Naughty and Russ really are shining during the Dark Days. I see your point! Always a silver (metallic?) lining, I guess.

OK, draw gods. Whip me up something special, would ya? I mean...not a "cupcake" or anything...just the right combination of opponents to bring back TMF. Small request.

Posted by Samantha Elin 08/21/2008 at 07:57 AM

AM and Jacko, just saw the post on shopping. You should see me in a mall, I have to go to every store in it and I love to take my time. My boyfriend won't go with me, just gives me the credit card and boy can I do some damage. Ok, I'm getting too excited thinking about shopping, so back to the tennis. The best change that happen in tennis is shot spot and we have Serena to thank for that in the match against Capriati at the Open. In regards to the mandatory tournaments, I don't think they will have much of an impact when you consider the fact that if a player does publicity he can get out of it. I think the top players are pretty much free agents and regulating the behavior of spoiled millionaires is difficult. The guys show up a lot more than the girls. Justine, forever my #1!

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 07:58 AM

rg.nadal:

I hear you about Frank. He has such a great game but is so up and down. Last year he had some really good wins in the HC season. He has a game similar to Roger's. Great serves, great volleys, terrific one-handed backhand. He plays like someone in the top 30 but keeps slipping back once he gets ahead. Grrr.

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 08:00 AM

sorry that should have read leonard cohen, sorry i misspelt the almighty ones name, pls forgive me!!!!

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 08:01 AM

Samantha Elin:

I forget, can you remind me again? Who is your favourite female player??? Hmmm, did you say Clisjters? ::))

Posted by rg.nadal 08/21/2008 at 08:03 AM

ron: I am partial towards guys with one-handed backhands. Frank is talented and needs to stay injury-free and he could do some serious damage at the USO. His recent win over Ancic was very impressive.
Ok. Got to go home. See you later.

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 08:03 AM

rg nadal, just reading through posts sorry didn't see the one you sen't me,well i see, true to form, backing roger to win us open, but a rafa fan, good, like you backed and put money on roger to win gold medal at olympics, great omen for rafa.

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 08:04 AM

Samantha Elin:

So I take it you're one of those people who goes into a store and sees something you like, then goes to all the other stores in the mall just to compare shop, and eventually go back to the very first store and buy the thingy? I think I know you! :)

Speaking of shopping, I have to go to the grocery store and will be back in a few.

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 08:06 AM

aussiemarg:

Just heading out the door for about half an hour but almost had a heart attack when I saw how you spelled the Messiah's name! Gasp! Thank you for the correction. :)

Posted by Rachael 08/21/2008 at 08:10 AM

mornin' Tari.

completely forgot draws were today.

I'd wish for a cupcake for Roddick, but frankly, he's more likely to crash out in the second round if that happens.

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 08:12 AM

re frank, pls don't get me started on franks hair!used to love frank's hair, without product, loved the way the curls went swish around his headband, since frank has taken on the samurai look, thought he spent too much time, with the japan team at the games, its not the same for me,guys you know i am a expert and big fan of the hair, people come from far ans wide, just to get my opinion on hair!,regarding franks game very impressed with franks game against mario ancic, who by the way is on my toy boy list, well thats another story,i hope frank has a good us open, can't wait to see the hair!

Posted by Tari 08/21/2008 at 08:16 AM

Yeah, Andy needs the right combo too, Rachael. That's why I'm asking for help. I think the right draws for both Andy and Roger are complicated, and we'll know them when we've seen them. In hindsight. Hopefully. So yeah, no "cupcakes", please.

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 08:20 AM

guys so you what time the draw comes out, being in sydney oz, is gets quite confusing, like its 10.20pm here.

Posted by Aussie Angel (Safina WTA Future No. 1) 08/21/2008 at 08:20 AM

am - your ex hubby should go shopping with my sister she is terrible. She has big feet size 10 and it takes her forever. Me I have the average size so it doesn't take me too long at all. Plus my sister is a procrastinator. It drives me crazy.

BTW I am watching the diving. Go Wu.

And go Verdasco.

Posted by Or 08/21/2008 at 08:22 AM

I had a dream this morning that the draw was out.

Funnily enough, in my dream I placed Roger in the right place of the draw (lower half) and he played a guy called Tom Delary. The guy obviously doesn't exist, and I have no idea where the name came from.

He had Hewitt in his part of the draw, which is sort of funny - I remembered in my dream Roger was now seeded 2, but didn't remember Hewitt was out of the open?

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 08:29 AM

i am not making any predications until the draw comes out, if novak gets into gods draw,i will personally fly to nyc and give what for to the people there,i hope roger finds his mojo, but i think, his confidence will be lifted, due to winning, the doubles,i want safina to do well, she was my pick for gold at the olympics, just got too tired at the end,but silver was great for her, rafa of course, that goes without question, interesting to see tsonga perform, seeing he pulled out of new haven,us open will be very interesting indeed.

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 08:42 AM

aa yes i think my husband would go well shopping with your sister, gee i hope they find a centre, that is open 24hrs,because they will need that amount of time to make up their minds, peter has always been a thinker, but pls,3 hrs to make up ones mind,no wonder i have turned to drink!

Mods: Is it just me, or this a tad worrisome... any way you can find out where the came from and perhaps inquire whether said poster is okay?

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 08:59 AM

aussiemarg:

Totally agree about Frank's hair! Such natural beautiful curls and then he had to mess with it. Good thing he's got a great game. His win over Ancic was great and his wins last summer over Roddick and some other top players were great too.

Aussie Angel:

Watching the diving too, but I have to say, GO HEYMANS, seeing as how she's Canadian. :)

Posted by Silvery Grey Metallic Russ (45T.OSU_EVAS) 08/21/2008 at 08:59 AM

AM: I'm having a predication right now. I see you... and a keyboard... and a screen. And, wait, it's coming clear to me now... yes, you do something before you come to a site with huge green block of whatever on the right; you... you visit

http://www.spellchecker.net/spellcheck/

and then, you post. I also see a guy with long hair that resembled Frodo on steroids lifting a huge silver cup.

Am I psychic?

Posted by Jewell 08/21/2008 at 09:01 AM

hey everyone!

shopping *shudders* ugh. Except online or for books.

yes, rg nadal, kinds of gives it away.

Going for JJ on the woman's side. I don't think she'll win but I love her.

ron: but, but, real puppies! *loves* I need a dog. I don't know why. I just need one. I like Murray's game too but...I don't know. I don't know. I'm just...doubtful.

Oh, I want the draw!

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 09:02 AM

Russ: 8:50 a.m.

Wow, just went back and read that 5:27 a.m. post by 6' Under. Pretty dark stuff. I don't think it's that worrisome but it certainly is a downer when all of us are so pumped for the Open draws to come out.

I guess I get their point, trying to make a social statement about the state of world affairs, blah blah blah.

Wrong forum 6'.

Watching men's hockey Aus vs Spain. A very good perve fest.

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 09:05 AM

jewell: 9:01 a.m.

You're a puppy lover? I have two and they are my life. I have a Yellow Lab named Charlot (Sharlo), and a Jack Russell Terrier named Harley. They are nut cases and I love them with all my heart!

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 09:07 AM

russ holy hell you have got me down pack,i won't to borrow your cyrstal ball, by the way i think my spelling is improving, stop with those spelling links, its getting to me!!!!

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 09:10 AM

Aussie Angel: 9:04 a.m.

RFLMAO! Nothing like a good perve fest eh?

aussiemarg:

You asked when the draws come out. They come out at 11 a.m. on the east coast of North America. So, right now it's 9:05 a.m. here. Figure out the time difference from where you are and you'll have the time. Just keep checking the usopen.org site. I think Australia is about 15 hours ahead of here but I'm not sure.

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 09:11 AM

aussiemarg: 9:07 a.m.

Please, teach me how to have someone "down pack." Please! It sounds interesting and a little kinky. :)

Posted by Silvery Grey Metallic Russ (45T.OSU_EVAS) 08/21/2008 at 09:12 AM

AM: I will not stop. Well, I will once I get bored, or there it tennis again, but it's very, very simple. Just paste your text into the box, and voila... it becomes intelligible to the rest of us... remember... it costs less than a cup of coffee a day ;)

Ron: Perhaps I watch too much TV.

Posted by Jewell 08/21/2008 at 09:14 AM

ron: oh yes. I had a rescued Chocolate Lab until this Easter, imaginatively named Chocky - he was a bit thick but extremely cute - he got to be 16 and then old age caught him up. I'm just at the point now where the dog-shaped hole in my house is too big to ignore. I actually was offered a Jack Russell puppy, but, although they're lovely dogs, I don't think they're for me. I'm hoping for a mongrel/collie type next time around.

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 09:16 AM

gee whats happening to the usa relay teams the us mens team dropped the baton in the their race, haven't made it through, then the usa women relay have done the same thing, sticky fingers or hands, whatever?

Posted by Aussie Angel (Safina WTA Future No. 1) 08/21/2008 at 09:16 AM

WTF is going on with the relays. I agree with Raelene Boyle it must be the wet weather.

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 09:19 AM

ron, sorry to upset you with the expression "down pack'

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 09:19 AM

Yay, Heymans takes the silver in the tower diving. Sorry Aussies about Wu though. :)

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 09:19 AM

ron, sorry to upset you with the expression "down pack'

Posted by Aussie Angel (Safina WTA Future No. 1) 08/21/2008 at 09:22 AM

ron didn't Wu get a medal.

Posted by Subhadeep 08/21/2008 at 09:23 AM

aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) : draw is set for 11:00 am Eastern Time USA. Its 9:22 am now so in just over 1.5 hrs we will have the USO draw

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 09:23 AM

aussiemarg:

Upset me? No way. You always bring a smile to my face. I was just teasing you, I hope you don't mind. But upset me? Never. You're an Aussie and we Canadians LOVE Aussies for sure.

jewell:

Yes, Jack Russells are a handful for sure. He is my little buddy and follows me everywhere and is just the smartes cutest thing, but he is so so so hyper and has a tendency to want to attack and kill anything that moves. Like big dogs, cats, squirrels, balls of Kleenex, blowing leaves, etc.

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 09:23 AM

what is happening my text wen't haywire, i will start again

ron, sorry to upset you"down pack' means, well the way i used it,towards russ,he understands me., by the way i am listening to the best of the doobie brothers, tack me in your arms, rock me a little while, yeah love the doobies!!!

Posted by Jewell 08/21/2008 at 09:25 AM

According to the BBC (which is never wrong, ha!) Chen Ruolin got gold and Wang Xin bronze.

I'm watching triple jump and showjumping - ron, that last guy in round 1 for Canada was brilliant!

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 09:28 AM

aussiemarg:

I completely understood what you meant by "down pack." I just thought it was cute because it sounded like you were trying to say he has you "down PAT" which is how we say it here. Maybe you say it differently in Oz. If I'm getting the meaning correctly that is. Here, if someone knows you really well or nails you on something we say "oh, you've got me down pat." Were you meaning the same thing?

Posted by Jewell 08/21/2008 at 09:28 AM

And I forgot to mention - The sun is shining!!!! Yay. Of course, it rained all night, but hey, I'm not complaining.

Posted by Silvery Grey Metallic Russ (45T.OSU_EVAS) 08/21/2008 at 09:28 AM

Ron: Pssst... she mean't "down pat". As in, understood perfectly. Unfortunately, the spell check wouldn't have caught it, but rest assured, I catch every single one. It's a curse.

Posted by Aussie Angel (Safina WTA Future No. 1) 08/21/2008 at 09:28 AM

I'm sorry but what is all the posing by the track athletes and what was that dude throwing himself on the ground for. I really don't like track events.

Posted by Subhadeep 08/21/2008 at 09:28 AM

Jewell : 10 m platform diving was so close to being a upset for China. The Canadian girl almost won BUT last round Chen came back with a 100 plus score on her last dive. The chinese divers are just so tough on tough times. Hope Fed gets tougher like this and gets his mojo back in USO.

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 09:30 AM

And, the Doobies are awesome. They were better before Michael McDonald became the lead singer but they were still good. Much like how Genesis was better when Peter Gabriel was the lead singer before Phil Collins.

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 09:32 AM

russ i knew you were coming to get me on that one,pls get a life,go argue with your wife, kick your next door neighbour or someone,i will get np on your case, will start posting you with a least 12 pages, watch out,i have has a hard day, with the ex husband shopping!!!!

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 09:33 AM

Subhadeep:

Yes, the Chinese girl was awesome in her last dive eh? I was on the edge of my seat because that gold for Canada felt so close, but like you said, the Chinese are like Rafa, tough when the times are tough. Congrats to them though, and to my Emilie for getting the silver. Not easy to take a medal away from the Chinese in diving or gymnastics.

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 09:35 AM

Man, it's hard to get anything done without running back to the computer. Everyone is so excited and the energy here is great. Only just under 90 minutes until the draws come out!

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 09:36 AM

ron re my last post, yes i did mean, kind of,down pat,but in aussie, thank you very much russ,we also say down pack, russ wishes he had a six pack! those days are gone.

Posted by Subhadeep 08/21/2008 at 09:37 AM

Ron : Sure was close! Kudos to Emilie. BUT with chinese girls in such a good form I did not see why she had only a 3.2 dive in her last round. Always leaves the door open for a come from behind. BUT don't know if anyone can defend a 100 plus dive.

You correctly put that of a true champion : when the going gets tough the tougher gets going! Just like Nadal, especially in 08. Hope RF puts his head down, get some time out of IMG promotions, and gets back as a tougher player and show us some more GS wins.

Posted by harini 08/21/2008 at 09:40 AM

ooh i forgot the draws come out today! hurrah!

morning everyone!

Posted by Silvery Grey Metallic Russ (45T.OSU_EVAS) 08/21/2008 at 09:44 AM

AM: You're right, I do wish I had a 6-pack--never had one, though, so those days were never here. I'll leave you be for a while. Carry on...

Posted by Subhadeep 08/21/2008 at 09:46 AM

I have a six pack BUT its presently hidden under a bag of laundry.

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 09:48 AM

aussiemarg:

No worries. Different countries say the same expressions in different ways. Kind of like "ta," right? Ta is used here and there and in England, etc. but in different ways.

Subhadeep:

Yes, even though I am a devout Rafanarian I sure hope Rog gets his proverbial s*#t together so that we can enjoy this rivalry longer. His game is too beautiful to disappear from the scene so early.

The Cuban just won the 110m hurdles!

Posted by Aussie Angel (Safina WTA Future No. 1) 08/21/2008 at 09:49 AM

I think you should put the six pack in the fridge.

Men's hockey Aus vs Spain 2 all.

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 09:50 AM

I used to have a six-pack too, now it's just a keg. :(

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 09:53 AM

ron, i like michael mcdonald voice, he is doing a lot of jazz singing at the moment,i have a cd called the very best of smooth jazz,he teams up with lee ritenour singing, everything little thing she does is magic, really great,i also love chuck mangione he is a jazz god,i worship his music, also saw live in concert al jarreau, wow, fantastic.

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 09:57 AM

good night aa yes i wonder who will get the cup cake draw this time!

Posted by Samantha Elin 08/21/2008 at 10:06 AM

I think 6ft under should get a 6 pack, lighten up, the world is great. OK, since people mentioned puppies, I've four, all named after my favorite player, Justine, Juju, Justin and baby Juju. Roger has a rough year so I hope he gets an easy draw. For JJ, she's done if she gets Safina who has her number. Justine, forever my #1!

Posted by ron 08/21/2008 at 10:08 AM

aussiemarg:

Now, I never said I didn't like Michael's voice. You are absolutely right when you say he is a great jazz singer. Also blues. All I meant was that as far as the Doobie Brothers went, I preferred Tom Johnston singing. I'm a big Southern Rock fan and their sound was more like that with him.

"Long Train Runnin'," "Black Water," "China Grove." Just the sound was different. They became more pop with Michael and that's cool.

Now, I have to go and, whoo-hoo, vacuum! Oh well, it keeps me busy waiting for the draws to come out. Weird, it feels kind of like Christmas morning or something this year.

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 10:09 AM

samantha elin, i agree with you on safina, hopes she goes well at the us open, she had a great olympic games, silver, got a bit tired at the end of that game, but she had won back to back titles, safina future no 1 wta go girl!

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 10:22 AM

ron yes i know what you mean with tom johnston loved his voice,i agree the doobies did kind of wen't more pop commercial with michael.

Posted by Sam 08/21/2008 at 10:56 AM

ron: I'm also partial to the earlier Doobie Brothers music. In addition to the songs you listed, I also really liked "Listen to the Music", "Rockin' down the Highway", and "Nobody".

Since you like Southern Rock, are you a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan as well?

Depends. Do you feel the same way about Phelps?

“My take has always been innocent until proven guilty. BUT I do agree with you about the effort and the ease with which he won both sprints in a world class field. Especially his 100 m win, was very Ben Johnson'ish!”

I hope it is just coincidence that both these men you speak of just happen to be Jamaican. BTW, the 200m was not won with ease. He was trying really hard. It was written all over his face. He was actually grimacing. Did you see the race?

Serena AO 2007 - and she won the tournament!”

Serena is an exception as is Venus. These two are the only people on tour(men or women)who don’t have to be 100% or even match fit to win.

Ho-hum, another day, another Chinese government crackdown on freedom of speech...now the iTunes store has been shut down in the "People's Republic" for putting out a album's worth of downloads showing sympathy for the people of Tibet and their dream of regaining independence. Apparently athletes at the games were asked by the iTunes people to download the songs and listen to it while they were at the games. Kind of keep things in perspective. Fat chance under the dictatorship there. Read it and weep. http://tinyurl.com/6l8ex5
Btw, thanks for nothing NBC...as far as your reportage is concerned everything is fine and dandy there. Oh, well...money talks...and talks and talks. How about another feature on the unusual food served in China? Enjoy the games!
