Your Call, Aug. 20 08/20/2008 - 10:52 AM

Smallyourcall_5 Mornin', everyone. I'm going out to the US Open qualies today, to pick up my credentials and poke around a little. Not much more to add for now, except to say that I'll be posting later in the day, and expect to bump into some of you out at the BJKNTC this afternoon. Tomorrow, we have the US Open official draw ceremony, and then Friday I'll be back out at Flushing Meadow. Enjoy today's tennis action and comment on it here. Also, keep your eyes open for Thursday's Deuce Club posts, where I'm going to ask those of you who will be attending the US Open, and may want to hook up with fellow TWibe membere, to make yourselves know.

Deciding TB b/w Olga and Dani for the match with Olga leading 4-2

Posted by sblily (Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!) 08/20/2008 at 09:37 PM

hey Moderators can we start a new thread where tennisfan and NP can try and out longwind each other? ;-)) I could be called "15 paragraphs of fame"
-----

LOL, nT. What are you talking about? Why, we might be witnessing the early stages of the second great TW romance (or bro-mance, as the case may be).

Whoever mentioned seeing Beth Orton in concert - I'm jealous. :) I love her music, and it sounds like she put on a good show.

Posted by naughty T, Lisboa Portugal 08/20/2008 at 09:38 PM

ten paragraphs i made that NP. Definately not Proustian in verbosity but not bad at all for a tennis board.
Maybe if you get even more succinct we could imagine that NP stands for Nine Paragraphs

From the ticker:

http://tinyurl.com/5m7ypa

Eight-time Beijing gold medalist Michael Phelps described his meeting with Nadal in an interview with DPA earlier this week: "Actually I walked up to Rafael Nadal. And he is probably my favourite tennis player to watch and I walked up to him and I was like, 'I just want to meet you and don't want to take a picture or anything, I just want to meet you.' And I told him, 'I watch you all the time when you play tennis and I love watching you play tennis.' I told him good luck. That is probably the only person."

British cyclist Jamie Staff talks about this chance encounter with Rafael Nadal while doing laundry in the athletes' village. "I was in the laundry and I realized I was standing right next to Nadal," said Staff. "I didn't bother him but he was shoving all his colours and whites in together. I really wanted to say, 'Dude, you're going to have a nightmare with that. You can't just put the whole bag in - there are reds in with whites'. But what can you do?"

LOL, Rafa doesn't know how to do laundry. Sounds like they all had fun, all those world class athletes living together for a couple of weeks : )

NP:

"Obviously you're someone from a provincial region who likes to burn a lot of straw."

I don't really understand this comment, so it does not bother me.

Fedralism - A system of government in which power is divided between a central authority and constituent political units.

It like George Bush who runs on a platform that say, Federal intrusion into state matters is wrong. I had to deal with it in Education. So what does he do?

Runs to the Federal Courts to shut down a state from counting votes so he can become president.
Passes massive Federal Legislation to increase Federal Intrustion into education.
Passive almost obscene Legislation that wips away hard fought constitiution individual freedoms.

Democrates are just as bad in other ways.

I am all for freedom as long as no one is harmed.

However, the WTA ranking system right now allows for considerable freedom in making one's schedule. What is the rap against it? Just what you used. You get inferior #1's like JJ. They top player don't play enough, don't play H2H and bow out of tournaments etc., etc. So what is the solution? Make the women's game more like the men with Mandatory tournments. It's a vicious cycle. The more things change the more they stay the same.

"We have the law and social mores to punish these individuals."

I guess people can't do what they want then, right?
Who punishes OPEC?

My actual point was that it's harder for women to play five sets.

Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not convinced by your claim that women can play three sets without being in shape.

Serena AO 2007 - and she won the tournament!

"But again if you really want women to play five sets then try to convince them to play for five sets on hot, humid days when the Slam events generally take place."

Do you think the men are jumping up and down screaming we want to play 5 set in the heat! Yes! Yes! Yes! - Mo! They are made to, by who I don't know if it the ATP or governing bodies.

They player are not going to ask for this unless it becomes and issue with money. McEnroe even said once during commentary that the women did at one time play 5-sets and that the men play 5-sets at every level at slams is a recent development (1980's) they use to only play from the quarters on. Futher, if you look at draws from past year at slams have 128 players is also a recent development and there used to be byes at slams.

That's actually news to me, so let me know if you can find an article that can confirm that more than one or two players are actually for the consolidation.

McEnore in his book at the back. He brother has said in interviews on Tennis Channel, Martina.

And you're wrong that Li is an amateur
I corrected this later it was Peng not Li.

Again you need to explain why there's "a need for streamlining and more cooperation between the men and women’s tours."
First, I did not know we were in a legal battle. But just read Lary Scott interview about how to improve tennis/WTA.

I am tired now. I think I will go to bed.

Dani wins!

This just off the wire.. 14th time reincarnation of the living Buddha the Dalai Lama described his meeting with tennis sensation Rafa Nadal. " it was Nirvana and my dharma is finally balanced. I want to come back as a pair of piratas or an orange sweatband. With Rafas help i am sure Tibet can be free."

Nancy, i'd love for djoko to win the US. the guy's really grown on me and i think he himself needs a big win. i'm still gunning for Marat to take it though. i think i would...fall into a coma, as Rachael suggested.

I could see that Rafa and Michael could have a lot in common. Aside from being close in age, they are similar in how they prepare for a match, how much they give/hold back with the media, respectful of others, do not talk crap about opponents and instead settle it on the court/pool...etc, etc...anyway, I could see an advertising opportunity here. What product? I don't know but maybe a game where they face off...but whatever it is it should have a fun, young, fresh angle to it.

Posted by NP 08/20/2008 at 10:25 PM

Tennis Fan,

You’re still burning a lot of straw men and not addressing my actual points, not to mention building up non sequiturs along the way.

I meant to say you don’t understand why we have federalism in the first place. But again I’m not interested in a political discussion so I’ll let that pass.

I already said I don’t think JJ is an inferior player. She did what she did to get her the top ranking. If you wanna slam her No. 1 ranking then blame the WTA, not her. And what makes you think making a few tourneys mandatory would get rid of this problem? You really think players don’t already participate in the tourneys that have high ranking points? Not only does your JJ/WTA example unintentionally reinforce my argument, you also failed to make your own convincing argument that the ATP and WTA should adopt the same rules.

And people can’t do what they want IF THEIR ACTIONS HARM OTHER PEOPLE. I’ve already said this a dozen times. And the OPEC is a cartel controlled by a few national governments, not a product of laissez-faire capitalism, so again your example unintentionally reinforces my argument that centralization is generally bad.

As for Serena’s triumph at the 2007 AO, she was able to win because she was in a good enough shape. Did you even think before you chose your examples? I find it hard to believe you’d speak in favor of my arguments to this degree, even if unintentionally. And men play five sets not just because of the ATP rules but of the century-long tradition, but of course that’s not the case with women. Again the onus is on you to argue for the 5-set requirement for wowen.

And yet again you’re gonna have to cite more than just McEnroe to confirm that just a player or two are calling for the consolidation of the tennis governing bodies. And like I said Peng is a pro player, so your example was again unapt. Finally, no, we’re not in a legal battle, but you did argue for the consolidation yourself so you have the burden of argument.

This will be my last lengthy response on this matter until you can actually make relevant and intelligent points for your argument. Sorry, but you're gonna have to do better than this if you want me to concede your points.

Posted by siggy waiting (for the return of Once and Future King!) 08/20/2008 at 10:28 PM

Vetmama, got your mail. Agree with 100%. It will so happen sooner rather than later. I would actually prefer 2006 - better year - something like 92-5 was it. Never to be surpassed again in history. Boy, our boy really put up some unbelieveable numbers. Would that I had appreciated everthing instead of now living on memories. I am dying laughing over here on the posts here. Hilarious.
Pierre, thanks for the kind words - much appreciated.

Vetmama, I got it, just have not written back yet. Boy, I tell you it is a very good time to be a Jamaican. Then again, it is always a good time to be a Jamaican. To those here who were nominating a Jamaican for the post of bartender, be careful what you wish for - our Jamaican men have been known to break our hearts from time to time and turn women into headcases (dont think that is what we really want) since we are actually cheering for the headcases of the ATP/WTA

Just catching up and have some huge news:

NP: You have only 2 entries in the top 5 most verbose posts of the day. But I'm not sure it's a clean "victory" for you, since it appears you had a hand in coaching the verbosity out of the winner.

Nontheless, without further ado... here are your top 5 most verbose posts of Aug 20, 2008:

5. NP 414 words
4. NP 588
3. Tennis Fan 688
2. Tennis Fan 727
1. Tennis Fan 950!!!

Well done, gentleman.

NP, try harder next time, okay? You didn't even get a medal.

Tennis Fan, well done, but I think you can do better next time. Fifty more words and you would have been at a grand.

To collect your prize, please e-mail me a statement(<50 words) describing what I am do with/to myself for pointing this out like a jack___...

[Laugh, gentlemen... ;)]

There are nights when I come here and I swear I am at some convention where the object is for each person (NP) tries out do someone else (name other verbose poster here) with knowledge of all things obscure. Absolutely ridiculous. By the time you get to the tennis commentary, you are so bored you get fed up, log off and miss all the tennis talk of the day. Thank you Russ, thank you.

To the person who enquired about Roger and red wine - on a personal note, I can never watch a Roger match without a tall glass (sometimes a whole bottle, French Open 2008 -gah) actually had a shot of Appleton VX, and Wimbledon 2008 is but a blur right now. Too drunk to remember what happened. Who won that match by the way - LOL -

"And even then, you were probably competing in a weak era ..."
LOL, Sam.

Russ has transcended Nerdhood.
He is Statistic Man

Posted by Sam 08/20/2008 at 10:58 PM

Russ: Damn, I'll have to work more on my timing.

nT: Nerd, Geek, Dork and now the latest category in OKCupid is Russ!

Yes Siggy, that Roger = fine red wine post was mine. And there was only a hint of naughtiness.:)

You could probably write a whole novel about the beauty of Roger's game, as well.

May/Walsh is playing the number 1 seeded team in Tian/Wang.

Rain will play a role.

Will May/Walsh extend their streak to 108? May/Walsh is 5-2 against Tian/Wang. All matches have been sweeps.

I don't see anyone but Nadal winning the USO either.

He'll probably not have that many close sets or sets lost, either.

AMS Paris will be left for the lesser beings, but he probably takes everything else in the season.

avid SF, I concur with tennisesq.'s @ 8:40PM.
Should have given credit to where it belongs.
I was leaving work and remembered it late.
Sorry tennisesq. :-)

Arun: What in the blue hell is a s/w? I used my trust abacus.

Christopher: Yeah, that exercise was a colossal waste of time that could have been spent watching porn. What was I thinking? And for the record, I think NP is quite a kind soul. Just verbose. I am too, but brevity can be learned.

TMF Rules: I am not brilliant, by any definition of the word.

Posted by Arun (Go Smiley Fed) 08/20/2008 at 11:06 PM

Russ: s/w = software

I flove "Russifosity"! Great!

Statistic Man, the new super-hero.
Faster than a speeding calculator.

BTW, saw Iron Man last night. That movie rocked! I was really surprised that it was that good. It was especially fun because Robert Downey Jr. is my age, and it's cool to think we could still be (aging) superheroes.

tmf, you get "fed" up...? ;)

vetmama, that WAS you! Only a hint of naughtiness...? weeelll, you'll have to give it a little time for the bouquet to fully open up, that's the beauty of fine red wine... like rog himself, no? ;) something tells me that with passage of time, the world will learn to appreciate rog's brilliance with greater clarity!

naughty, bonne chance with your flight! Go naughty!
