Your Call, Aug. 20 08/20/2008 - 10:52 AM

Smallyourcall_5 Mornin', everyone. I'm going out to the US Open qualies today, to pick up my credentials and poke around a little. Not much more to add for now, except to say that I'll be posting later in the day, and expect to bump into some of you out at the BJKNTC this afternoon. Tomorrow, we have the US Open official draw ceremony, and then Friday I'll be back out at Flushing Meadow. Enjoy today's tennis action and comment on it here. Also, keep your eyes open for Thursday's Deuce Club posts, where I'm going to ask those of you who will be attending the US Open, and may want to hook up with fellow TWibe membere, to make yourselves know.

14-all USA and China. China got a let pt for a 14-13 lead.

Sam,
Only lightning stops play.

Poor Xavier Malisse. Out in the first round of qualies to Victor Estrello. Mired in the muck of his comeback trail. Does anyone think the Xman will ever make it back, or should he live in his past glory of being Jennifer Caprietti's "boytoy"?

Posted by Violetta 08/20/2008 at 11:15 PM

Aww, thanks am. That's nice of you. This is a great match so far. It must be exhausting to play in the wet sand. Vamos May and Walsh!

Posted by NP 08/20/2008 at 11:16 PM

nT, waiting for the next instance of my Beckettian brevity? Don't you see that every day, like this post?

siggy, I'll take that as a compliment. :)

Russ, hate to disappoint you, but unless I was sleeptyping I assure you that Tennis Fan and I are two different persons. Not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Posted by karin1492 08/20/2008 at 11:17 PM

If we're talking about classic US Open matches don't forget about the Henin/Capriati semi in 2003. Henin was two points away from being defeated 11 times in the match, and won despite having pretty bad cramps in the third set. Henin won 4/6 7/5 7/6 (7/4) with her match finishing early on Saturday morning.

May/Walsh wins first set over Tian/Wang 21-18 on the 2nd set pt. Chinese made tactical mistake in calling their timeout too late in the set.

Christopher, just so you know, some of my posts tend to be long 'cause I've learned from my past online discussions is that if views are not fully explained early on then those involved in the discussion tend to waste much time talking past each other. But I'll say this was one of the times when the lengthy posts didn't help save time in the end.

Didn't I read somebody post on a previous that they thought of Federer as just a "marketing tool"? Sure ! ... and Rafa is the down-to-earth boy from Mallorca who would never court his celebrity or pose for fashion magazines like the fashionista Fed, right?

Well, Rafa has already begun gracing the covers of magazines like this one: http://nymag.com/fashion/08/fall/49256/ (New York fashion magazine, no less !) - half-naked, showing off his muscular body. Feast your eyes !

NP did you see my 9:57 post ? Because I want to clarify if she is actually a professional or not .

Posted by Tennis Fan 08/20/2008 at 11:35 PM

You’re still burning a lot of straw men and not addressing my actual points, not to mention building up non sequiturs along the way.

NP is right about everything!

Your arguments make no sense. You prove that women can't play five sets. What is your argument? They can't do it because NP says so? Were is you factual support for this argument?

I meant to say you don’t understand why we have federalism in the first place. But again I’m not interested in a political discussion so I’ll let that pass.

How do you know what I understand or don't understand?

I already said I don’t think JJ is an inferior player. She did what she did to get her the top ranking. If you wanna slam her No. 1 ranking then blame the WTA, not her.

You obviously have not read any of my posts in the last month or you would know how wrong this statement is.

And what makes you think making a few tourneys mandatory would get rid of this problem? You really think players don’t already participate in the tourneys that have high ranking points? Not only does your JJ/WTA example unintentionally reinforce my argument, you also failed to make your own convincing argument that the ATP and WTA should adopt the same rules.

NP would anything convince you if you don't want to be convinced? This is how wars start and new governments like Federalism/Communism/Marxism/Nazism or whatever government is imposed. Actually, to me, anarchism is looking better and better all the time.

This what the WTA has come up with to solve the 'problem' lack of top player support at top tournaments. It (mandatory tournaments) works in the ATP, the WTA is moving in that direction. They still will allow more flexiblity than the ATP system but it more like ATP than before.

I have been doing my own non-scientific study of the the WTA ranking system.

Miami 2008 - Mandatory # of top 20 players at tournment? 19, Only Sharapova missed because of Shoulder injury.

IW 2008 - not mandatory - # of top 20 players: 12 (Venus and Serena are a special case)

The top men must play at all 9 master series. The women only must play at Miami.

# of Tier I Tournaments attended by top 11 in past 12 months"

Ivanovic - 7
Jankovic - 8
Serena - 6
Kuzzy - 8
Sharapova - 6
Dementieva - 6
Safina - 8
Venus - 3
Zvonareva - 8
Radwanska - 8
Chavatadeze - 7

What factual support have you provided for your argument? I see your opinion and nothing else.

And people can’t do what they want IF THEIR ACTIONS HARM OTHER PEOPLE. I’ve already said this a dozen times. And the OPEC is a cartel controlled by a few national governments, not a product of laissez-faire capitalism,

I'm just going to let this go.

As for Serena’s triumph at the 2007 AO, she was able to win because she was in a good enough shape. Did you even think before you chose your examples? I find it hard to believe you’d speak in favor of my arguments to this degree, even if unintentionally. And men play five sets not just because of the ATP rules but of the century-long tradition, but of course that’s not the case with women. Again the onus is on you to argue for the 5-set requirement for wowen.

Tradition can be good and can be bad. Kings and Queens form of government is 'traditional' however tradition can and is sometimes good to change. This should not be used as an arguement to prevent women from playing five sets or a reason for claiming that women don't have the physical stamina to play five sets.

What factual support have you provided for your argument? Nothing!

And yet again you’re gonna have to cite more than just McEnroe to confirm that just a player or two are calling for the consolidation of the tennis governing bodies.

I really don't have the time and these are the players that know what is going on because they lived in the system. I would trust their point of view over yours. Besides, you have provided no factual support for your point of view only vague references to free market and governments.

And like I said Peng is a pro player, so your example was again unapt.

According to the WTA website Peng's status is amatuer.

Finally, no, we’re not in a legal battle, but you did argue for the consolidation yourself so you have the burden of argument.

"burden of arguement" sounds legal to me. However, I would have to research this further to fulfill my "burden of argument" and I have so many other things to do, so I will let it go.

This will be my last lengthy response on this matter

I think everyone is jumping up and down in glee on this comment!

until you can actually make relevant and intelligent points for your argument.

Forget it, it's not worth it!

Now, I wouldn't be statistics man if I used them selectively just to tell my version of "truth". So in all fairness to NP... here are some things I noticed about his posting pattern that I think deserves clarification.

NP appears to only go "off" when he's talking about something he is really passionate about-- debating, if you will, such as the dominance of the US Olympic Basketball Team, or Performance Enhancing Drugs. By example,

His average words/post in his debate vs. TF: 272
His average words/posts for everyone else: 117

Interestingly, for TF, his words per post vs. NT: 788
His average words/post for everyone else: 22

I think NP is to be commended for using roughly 1/3 the words that TF did in their debate. However, I would gather that, at a mean post length of 117 words, this would be roughly 2.0-2.5 times the "TW grand mean". So, NP, there is still work to be done before we can safely say that NP no longer stands for "Not Pithy". But I say you are getting there!

Means and standard deviations, etc. available upon request.

It looks like tennis isn't the only place where questionable injury timeouts take place. Chinese player Wang takes an injury timeout at a crucial point in the match. Supposedly, she does this all the time.

Posted by NP 08/20/2008 at 11:50 PM

Al, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Actually, Peng is a pro in all but name. When I said the governing bodies shouldn't prevent players from participating in certain events, I actually had in mind Connors, who infamously refused to join the ATP. He was in fact banned from the 1974 FO 'cause he dared to play the World Team Tennis, and he later filed a lawsuit in protest of the ATP's decision. And Peng is in fact a poor example for Tennis Fan to use 'cause it actually works for my overall argument that centralization is generally a bad idea. Connors should've been allowed to play in Roland Garros that year, and it's fortunate that Peng is now allowed to play Slam tourneys despite her putative amateur status.

Posted by Silvery Grey Metallic Russ (453.OSU_EVAS) 08/20/2008 at 11:52 PM

Al: You are absolutely correct. I did not clarify Tennis Fan's gender. Tennis Fan, I apologize if you are a woman-- I made an assumption.

However, gender probably doesn't impact my highly unscientific and flawed results that much. It could, if indeed, women use more words than men. However, a recent study in the NEJM suggests that this is not the case-- women and men use the same number of words in a day. Not in my house, but I suppose, on average.

TF: I'm glad you adjusted the average. I hope you feel vindicated knowing that you were only 2x as verbose as NP in those debates, rather than 3x. Did NP use any of your words in his posts? Because if we're adjusting your post length for words copied from NP, it's only fair that we adjust his post length for words copied from you.

I could, upon request and sufficent monetary compensation, analyze the tennis/non-tennis discussion ratio. Or I could gouge my eyes out with a spoon and eat them. And I see a spoon on the counter. In any case, it wouldn't be that funny an analysis, now, would it? Gouging my eyes out with a spoon, though... now that's fun!

I take the spirit of your second request to be that since this is tennis board, why are so many people talking about non-tennis related matters? And why is such behaviour allowed? That is a discussion to be taken up with the moderators, sir/ma'am, if you are troubled by it.

I'm just a monkey with a keyboard walking the tightrope between adding humour and being banned.

Russ, LOL! You are too much.

Posted by NP 08/21/2008 at 12:26 AM

Tennis Fan, you just keep repeating yourself. I'll try to explain this for the last time so even you can understand.

When did I every say women can't play five sets? All I said is that women generally aren't as physically gifted as men. I don't need facts to "prove" this common sense. You really don't get this?

And I don't need to read any of your posts from last month. You're the one who said JJ is an "inferior #1." And you actually think anarchism looks good but still call for the consolidation of the governing bodies? Again, if you don't get this I have nothing more to say.

I've also said that, bar any compelling circumstances, players are smart enough not to miss any tourneys that have high ranking points. I don't see the reason why the players shouldn't be allowed to choose which tourneys to play. And I don't think the stats you gathered help your case much. 12 out of 20 doesn't seem that bad to me. And I still would say they have the right to pull out even if that percentage was lower. Again the onus is on you to argue why some events should be mandatory as you're the one advocating for a change.

And your capacity for straw men simply amazes me. When did I say tradition should be used as "an arguement [sic] to prevent women from playing five sets or a reason for claiming that women don't have the physical stamina to play five sets"? I just pointed that because of your non sequitur that women can play five sets as men do, too.

Also you're free to believe whomever you want, just as I'm free to dismiss anyone who can't back his/her argument up with the facts he/she insists on. As for Peng I've already explained why your example is again an unintentional point for my own argument.

Finally, if you think "burden of argument" is just a legal term then that's your problem, not mine. Maybe you'll actually make a few intelligent points next time, but I'm not holding my breath.

Christopher: No, I cannot break down the words by origin, unless you are willing to give me grant to study this. The wrestling match... now there's an interesting proposition. I might have to punt this one to Jackie or Arun. Who to cast as these two?

Arun: Right. Steve Nash. Heckuva basketball player. I'd have to grow 2 feet, though.

You won't been able to after the gouging.

Thanks Arun and Sam.:) Watching sports for aesthetic reasons is an acceptable form of expression for everyone. And it's fun!

AM: I was just starting to tolerate you, and you go and kick me in the groin.

Posted by Sam 08/21/2008 at 12:31 AM

Russ: I warned you to wear a cup ...

Posted by rg.nadal 08/21/2008 at 12:32 AM

sam: Ah! The head-to-head matters. Thank you.

AM: My "bet" continues to be on Roger. Btw any idea what the big three are doing right now? Any practice photos?

NP: Oh man, we were making such good progress... ;)

Sam: Heavy topspin remember...?

"Mommy, Daddy, stop fighting!"

Seriously, are NP and TF still going at it?

Posted by NP 08/21/2008 at 12:34 AM

Russ, I normally don't use other posters' own words in my response 'cause I find that a lazy way to present one's argument without having to paraphrase it and present its most important points. If my posts seem worthy that's one of the reasons.

russ being in the medical profession i can help with your groin?

Posted by NP 08/21/2008 at 12:37 AM

Russ, that was actually shorter than my last response to TN, so we're still making progress. :)

Posted by Sam 08/21/2008 at 12:37 AM

Russ: My bad, forgot about that damn topspin.

Posted by Christopher 08/21/2008 at 12:38 AM

aussiemarg-- Fear not, Wimbledon remains all to clear in my memory. It was TMF Rules for whom it is a blur.

Russ-- Spoken like a true grad student. Why did the chicken cross the road? I don't know, but give me a grant and I'll look into it!

Posted by Silvery Grey Metallic Russ (xxv AVG MMVIII) 08/21/2008 at 12:40 AM

NP: Actually, I do recognize that. You have enough verbiage of your own... no need to borrow others'.

AM: No. You are to go nowhere near my groin. You've done enough damage. You want to help me? Stop kicking me there. That's a start.

Posted by Silvery Grey Metallic Russ (45T.OSU_EVAS) 08/21/2008 at 12:41 AM

Christopher: Yup.

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/21/2008 at 12:42 AM

yeah guys heard it all now,re wimbledon and blurs, gee guys with their constant excuses, its like guys with your selective hearing prolbelms, especially when we woman are tyring to tell you something, meaning and purposeful,we don't get a answer, the nineth wonder of the world, men and their selective hearing?

Posted by Aussie Angel (Safina WTA's Future Nol. 1) 08/21/2008 at 12:42 AM

Rosangel can we please have Rafter any of the two will be fine.

Posted by NP 08/21/2008 at 12:44 AM

Oh, I agree with you, Al. That still doesn't change the fact that TN's Peng example was unintentionally unapt 'cause he/she's the one arguing for mandatory events in women's tennis. The Peng example is actually a case FOR decentralization, not AGAINST it.

Christopher: I was walking back from Harvard Square today and replaying the first set of the Hamburg final in my head, especially 5-1, 40-30.

Posted by Silvery Grey Metallic Russ (45T.OSU_EVAS) 08/21/2008 at 12:50 AM

crazyone: That's funny... I was walking back from Harvard Square today and replaying the 4th set of the Wimbledon final in my head, especially 5-2, Rafa to serve in the tiebreak.

"

"

Yeah there is a disconnect there.. you see, men can accept approximately two advices per year. Wherein women try to dish out approximately 50,000 every day. Sooooo thats where the selective hearing comes in... zoning out... invaluable.

I am too ‘classy’ to be dating Phelps, says Beard

New York: Fourteen-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps may have what it takes to win over women’s hearts, but it looks like he’s just not good enough for former women’s breaststroke champ Amanda Beard.

Rumours of romance between the athletes began to circulate earlier this week, and while the record-breaker simply denied them, Amanda took to the airwaves on the ‘Johnjay and Rich in the Morning’ radio show and made it clear that she is not dating the American swimmer.

Beard, who has bared all for Playboy and appears in a sexy ad for PETA, also said that she has never even kissed Phelps.

"Eww, that's nasty. I have never, ever hooked up with Michael Phelps. Come on, I have really good taste. He's really not my type. We don't even talk to each other," the New York Post quoted her, as saying.

When ‘Extra’ asked Phelps if he was dating Beard, he said: "No."

"I'm not dating Amanda Beard. I'll say that. I think she has a boyfriend," he said in the TV show.

Asked if he's dating anyone, Phelps said: "Part of my life is kept to myself. I'm able to relax and be with my friends. Those pretty much are the only people who really know the answer to that question."
