McGrogan's Heroes

ATP - Tomas Berdych

TbThough there are exceptions, nicknames aren't very common in tennis today.  But I have one for Tomas Berdych, the towering Czech who won last week's Tokyo Open: The Snooze Button.  The guy seems to sleep through the Grand Slam season, leaving you to wonder how his talent hasn't equated to titles, but wakes up each autumn, making you a believer once again.

Berdych's first career title came in the fall, back in 2004 at Palermo.  It's a small (and woefully out of place) clay tournament, but Berdych's final three wins that week came against two hometown Italians and renowned dirtballer David Ferrer.  None of those victories should be taken lightly.  A year later, Berdych won his biggest tournament to date at the Paris Masters.  And who could forget in the fall of 2006, when Berdych silenced the Madrid crowd - both with his racquet and his finger - after upsetting beloved Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals?

Berdych reached the semifinals of last year's Tokyo Open, but lost to Richard Gasquet.  This year, Gasquet was bounced in the semis by Juan Martin del Potro, while Berdych headed to the final after taking out Andy Roddick.  In a groove after his win in Beijing, Roddick's exit was a surprise to many, especially since the American led 5-2 in the third set, before collapsing in a tiebreaker.

In the final, Berdych met an even hotter player in del Potro.  The Argentinean was pegged to prevail at this stage as well, having lost just one match in his last thirty.  But Berdych had no problems against his younger opponent, closing him out 6-1, 6-4.  These were not Berdych's only wins of note - he posted straight sets victories over Tommy Robredo (7-6, 6-2) and Fernando Gonzalez (6-0, 6-4).

Heading into Tokyo, Berdych's ranking was at No. 27; back in April, he was as high as No. 9.  Memo to Berdych: Wake up earlier next year!

WTA - Jelena Jankovic

JjNot too much to add from last week's notes on Jankovic.  But picking against her this week is simply impossible.  Jankovic won yet another loaded tournament (Stuttgart featured eight of the world's Top 10 women), and continued to build on her recent run to the U.S. Open final.  With Serena Williams suffering from an ankle injury, Jankovic appears to have the clear inside track on the year-end No. 1 ranking.

One thing that really impressed me from Jankovic this week was her ability to fight through in pressure situations.  In her quarterfinal match against Vera Zvonareva, Jankovic stayed resolute in both tiebreakers, prevailing to set up a semifinal with Venus Williams.  In that match, Jankovic lost the first set in a tiebreaker - now the pressure was really on.  But she stayed focused, besting Williams in a close second set (7-5) that turned the match around.  Jankovic rode the momentum to a comfortable 6-2 third set victory.

Jelena Jankovic - the total package?  At the moment, yes.  But as I said last week, Melbourne - and not Doha - will be what ultimately defines her as a player.

Here's a clip from the final of the 1997 Hamlet Cup (a very young Carlos Moya vs. Patrick Rafter), a now-defunct tournament that was held in nearby Commack, Long Island.  Only a short train ride away from where I currently reside, I curse the tennis gods for this tournament's demise.

Beyond the Bracket

I hope I'm not the only person that uses this site who also listens to This American Life, a thoroughly revealing look at all things...well, everything.  For those of you who've never heard of it, here's the format:

Host Ira Glass opens his hour-long show by introducing the theme, for which all the remaining stories (or acts, as they are referred to) will connect to in some way.  The theme is usually just a few short words, and as you listen to the acts, it becomes more apparent why that theme was chosen.  For example, in the episode titled "Enforcers," Glass starts by talking to former New York Rangers pugilist Joey Kocur about his role on the ice.  Then, Act One follows, which details the ways in which online patrollers try to dupe internet scammers.  Act Two then examines the policies of the Securities and Exchange Commission.  (Full episode description here.)

The show goes all over the map, which is half the fun of listening to it.  That's why I don't feel out of line comparing my most recent tennis match to yesterday's Buffalo Bills game against the Arizona Cardinals.  The title of my episode would be called "Stomach Punches."

Act One.  Lights Too Bright.

I play tennis in the New York City area most often against the same person, a good friend of mine who I'll call "Nikolay."  The last time I played him, I got off to a poor start, and lost the first set.  But I turned things around very quickly in the second set, winning six consecutive games to take it 6-1.  The reason this happened was that I believed in my shots and went for them.  I trusted a more aggressive forehand motion, and let loose on a two-handed backhand that turned into a weapon.  I also started to develop a poor man's kick second serve, which helped bail me out at times.

I couldn't wait to play Nikolay again and hopefully win in straight sets.  We met to play at 6 pm on a lit court in Farmingdale, Long Island.  After we both held serve through the first six games, I had incredible difficulty holding for the rest of the match.  The reason for this was that the same shots that inspired me before were killing me now.  They were going long and into net, but I didn't change what I was doing because I won before with those same shots.  But the execution never turned around.  I ended up saving seven or eight match points before finally succumbing in straight sets.  It was a very demoralizing match, and unfortunately, I won't have another chance at Nikolay for another two weeks, as he's off on vacation.

Act Two.  One Bad Loss.

The Buffalo Bills entered yesterday's game against the Arizona Cardinals at 4-0, which was their best start to a season since their Super Bowl years of the early 1990s.  Second-year quarterback Trent Edwards has brought a calming yet confident presence to a team that's grown used to losing - the Bills haven't made the playoffs this decade.  Arizona (2-2) would be a tough test on the road, but the Bills look different this year, and hoped to enter their bye week undefeated.

On the Bills' third offensive play, Edwards was leveled from the right side and suffered a concussion.  He wouldn't return to the game, leaving the ball in the hands of much-maligned backup quarterback J.P. Losman.  Losman had his moments, including an 87-yard touchdown strike to wide reciever Lee Evans.  But like the match points I saved, it were meaningless in the end.  The porous Bills defense let the Cardinals off the hook on nearly every third down, as hardly-mobile quarterback Kurt Warner picked apart Buffalo unfettered.  The Cardinals won 41-17, and the score doesn't do the game justice.  The Bills have two weeks to regroup before a slate of critical AFC games.

---

Both the Bills and I had tremendous confidence heading into our games, but were each blindsided when they came to pass.  We both have a bit of time to think about what to do next.  I'm cautiously optimistic going forward, in both cases.

Jelena Jankovic and Andy Murray also have a lot of time to think about their losses at the finals of the U.S. Open.  Although neither was the favorite in the final, they surely realized how close they came to winning a Grand Slam, and that those opportunities don't come around often.  How will they react at future Slams?  That's one of the biggest stories heading into 2009.

if...

you had to forecast, who wins a Grand Slam title next year - Andy Murray, or Jelena Jankovic?  (Or both?)

JJ.

I'm a Brit, if I get my hopes up Murray will not win anything!

Jelena Jankovic, just because she never has to worry about meeting either Nadal or Federer on the way.

JJ, she'll be our new princess! :)

helloo people. JJ looks good behind the wheel of new red car. She has such a lovely smile.

I'm off to bed but hi, Swiss Viking!!! I knew you resurfaced a few weeks ago then you went away again.

Hi crazyone! Yeah, I'm having computer problems and the noise of the fan is pretty bad, so when I'm watching tennis I turn the computer off now because I'm going insane...

I have the week off though so hopefully I'll get a lot of tennis in :-)

JJ but i will not be surprised if Andy win a slam next year ...
Im so happy for JJ. Her two titles in a raw should silence her critics. She is a very deserving world number one and her performance against Williams proves this ...
Bird dserved the nomiination of the hero without a doubt. He had a fantastic tournaament but Delpo was visibly ill which is shame cos it could have been a wonderful and very tight match. I hope Delpo pulls out of Vienna to recover and rest for Madrid ...

Good morning Swiss Viking :D

pete, how could you do this to me? a video of THE RAFTER?,well you show great taste,Guga, now Pat v Moya, the serve volley player versus the baseliner, mmm, please next time, show a video of Pat playing at the Us Open, winning, everytime i think of THE RAFTER,i go back you know where,THAT FINAL,i will never get over,so close, but soooo far away !,

JJ definitely. Its time for her step up to another level......winning Grand Slams!

Tomas Berdych is a hero? Isn't that the same player who KNEW his ball was out [serving 5-2 down at 40-30 against Andy Roddick; I say he knew because he had the smartest grin on his face] They could have gone to deuce and Roddick could have closed it out then, for all I know. But Berdych let his desperate need to win a title get in the way of what was the right thing to do!
Karma will come back and bite :)))
[I think Madrid still holds a grudge against him, no?]

O and as far as the WTA Tour is concerned, I'm looking forward to some interesting rivalries in '09..and I can't wait for Maria to come back [and hopefully defend her title Down Under] I think if JJ can't do it in Melbourne, then NY is her next big chance..
I hope that the best of Davenport's comeback is yet to come!

JJ will get a slam before Murray, but I won't be surprised if Murray makes a breakthrough next year, too.

JJ has been flawless over the past two weeks, but seriously, she needs a break. Painkillers and injections won't ensure a long career.

i think murray is very capable of winning a slam, but he needs to pace himself in grand slam tournaments,i think he could win a us open or aussie open slam,to me his best surface is a hard court.

the essence of playing grand slam tennis,is vastly different,in the second week of tournament,or some might say the business end,if one is lucky enough to be in that postion, its all about the timimg, thats when you want to be at your best.

murray i feel this year at us open played great, was tested, got to play rafa, was so up mentally and physically for that well deserved win,got to final? let down,i think he had no gas in the tank left, roger started like a house on fire, never really let murray into match.

as they say, sometimes, you have to lose a grand slam final,in order to know, how to win won.

Murray's best chance will be on the hard courts of Austrailia or US. I can see JJ winning any one of the 4 slams.

Serendipity bite.

Today is birthday of Roland Garros, the person after whom the French Open is named:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_Garros_(aviator)

Hey aussiemarg. Its Ed who wrote this artcile not Pete ...
Thanks for the vid Ed. Always lovely to see Young Charly and to see the great Rafter play...
Hassan,
I didnt see the Roddick/Berdy match so I cant comment. But Berdych was never known for his sportsmanship. I like his game but dont like his personality...
Anwyay, since that infamous incedent at Madrid, Rafa never lost to him again. You can feel that Rafa has a special motivation when he plays against him no;)

As usual, sorry about the typos.
That should be "article"
and "anyway"

rafa rocks thanks for that, sorry pete,

that post to be directed to ed,re rafter v moya

rafa rocks, also have you notriced with rafa, every time he loses to someone,of course not often,he will always beat them next time eg. novak beat him s/final cinncy,
rafa beat novak s/final olympics?? when will rafa and murray meet next time? interesting to say the least.

well big, big, happy birthday to Roland Garos, famous aviator, the man they named the wonderful home of clay after.

To me Roland Garos, the french open,is the tournaments of tournaments, holds so many happy memories, gee clay court tennis is there no other!

also thanks to Fedexfdan for pointing this, supplying the link to this wonderful man.

Hey AM!

Morning all. Do any Rafa fans know when he will play his next tournament?

I'm kind of missing the number 1 and 2 ATP players these past few weeks......;-)

Ade: Rafa next plays at the Madrid Masters.

rg nadal welcome to the other side,i see you have a bit of a crush on ana c.mmmm, what gives there?

thanxs rg.nadal.

Interesting week seeing Venus playing JJ again. Wonder if she can get her revenge this week.

I think JJ needs to slim out her schedule. She needs to concentrate on winning a slam now. She needs to cut out some of these tournaments.

AM: Thank you. *sheepish grin*. Anna C is one of my favourites! Was so unhappy about what happened to her at the beginning of the year to her.

Ade: Welcome. Yep, looking forward for another venus-jj clash (any idea at what stage they supposed to meet?) Jj needs to focus on first winning a slam. Once a player does that, its as if a burden is off their shoulders.

Hi people,

I was SO first. :)

I think Andy could win a slam really, as am says, a hard court slam looks most likely.

I agree Ade, a GS final and back to back titles says to me she can make it, for sure. She needs to not get injured.

Now that Kimiko Date has made a comeback, can we all start signing petitions to have Kim Clijsters back, plssss?

Ahaha i just saw the doubles draw of kremlin cup for the ladies...and surprisingly i saw ivan0vic name team up with schiavone...i just w0ndering..

Off again to give dog some attention, see you all later!

NP, I left you a comment on the previous thread.

i am still out on the jj glitter,if she can win a grand slam tournament, she has really been playing injured all year,in way or another, she first sustain her injuries,at the hoffman cup in perth, most of the tournaments she has played she calls the trainer out,to her credit, she has been one of the players on the wya merry go round, that plays nearly every tournament,as i said before to win a grand slam, its about the timing, yes the last two tournamanets she has played, she has won,jee i can think of another player that has done that this year, safina? i have only been enjoying jj's play, she has to play like that, more consistantly,to maintain the no 1 position for a start, because so far this year,we have seen so many rise to the top, then stumble back down, also she has to look at her schedule next year,to maintain her freshness and physical fittness, one of the main ingedients in winning a grand slam.

"if...

you had to forecast, who wins a Grand Slam title next year - Andy Murray, or Jelena Jankovic? (Or both?)"

I would say both. Would not be surprised if they both do it at the AO 09.

rg nadal aussie kim,has we call her here, down under,is most welcome back, new baby and all??

rg ndadl excuse me? what did i hear you say? murray winning aussie open, next year,no way jose, that title will be won,by you know who? pls? no?

AM: On yes. she is welcome along with her baby.

rg nadal shades of lindsey davenport hey!

and play has started in Vienna with Canas vs Seppi up first on Centre Court.

AM: haha. I know.I know. Our boy is definitely a big fav. one of the top two favs. But i do feel that from now on, except on clay Murray is going to be very very dangerous.

Yay! Found a stream for Momo-Alize
http://tinyurl.com/4xej6e

rg nadal i cant wait for the next rafa v murray on h/ourt match, rafa ususally never loses to the same player twice, our boy will be mentally refreshed for that one!

Canas has broken Seppi 1st game hoping this is a good sign for him. I just want him to get through his 1st rd as he has been having a very bad year.

rg.nadal I wouldn't be surprise either if Murray goes deep into the AO 09 either.

Dam my excitement was short lived as Seppi broke back.

Vamos Willy

AM: Oh yes. shades of Davenport.

rg, they can meet as soon as the third round.

I think Jelena can win a slam. I don't know about Andy M.

I feel confident if Jelena can get stronger to compete with Serena, she has a better chance.

Murray needs to do something also so he can last longer and not poop out like he did against Roger. Not to take away from Roger, but Murray seemed tired in the final.

Monday Net Post from Neil Harman of The Times:

http://tinyurl.com/4q5vxn

"I think JJ needs to slim out her schedule. She needs to concentrate on winning a slam now. She needs to cut out some of these tournaments."

Didn't we say the exact same thing last year???

lira vega you are a gem indeed!, i give you my award for the link lady of the year award,2008! allez!

Ade I think Murray was tired after playing his semi against Rafa over two days therefore he didn't have time to recover mentally or physically.

And there has been another break of serve by Canas.

swiss viking, agree,same old,same old!

On Jelena:

http://tinyurl.com/4q36oq

aa is this match a break a thon, or something??

AM: Oh yes. Rafa always makes it a point to take revenge over a player whom he lost to before. Only exeption was Nalby last year (but Nalby was the zone and both Rafa and Roger were beaten) think it can happen this year itself at Madrid/Paris/Shanghai

Aussie Angel: all Murray needs to do is stay fit and charged-up.

Oh and Seppi holds damn.

I think Murray will be focusing on his fitness and it is quite good that he is taking time out.

Geez I never thought I would be supporting Hampster Head but I like his game and I love his accent.

Aussie Angel, that's exactly what I mean. He needs a level where he will be prepared for these delays and all.

Look at what Rafa did at Wimby in 2007, he has to endure a lot of rain delays, etc... Murray needs to get fitter.

I think this year will be different for JJ. She wasn't ranked as high last year, this year she will be under more pressure to be creative about her schedule, etc....

Ace Rankings as of the completion of Stuttgart

Jelena Jankovic – Rome, Beijing and Stuttgart
Serena Williams - United States Open, Key Biscayne, Charleston, Bangalore
Dinara Safina - Berlin, Montreal, Tokyo, Los Angeles
Elena Dementieva - Olympics and Dubai
Ana Ivanovic - French Open and Indian Wells
Maria Sharapova - Australian Open, Doha, Amelia Island
Venus Williams - Wimbledon
Svetlana Kuznetsova - (Finals : Indian Wells, Tokyo, Sydney, Dubai, Beijing)
Agnieszka Radwanska - Eastbourne, Istanbul, Pattaya
Vera Zvonareva - Guangzhou and Prague

Gotta run!

Ade I am not missing seeing Rafa /Roger play it gives the other players a chance to get noticed and I like a lot of the lesser players.

jewell thanks for you link, on the neil harman,

special K, as i call him,is a promising player, great f/hand,probably the best thing to come out of japan,oh hey, except for their wonderful food, sushi and the like,as i say we goonna see.............?

liked his comments about tomas,to me,this player,is not the true ranking he should be,persistant injuries,i believe have stopped tomas, realising his true potential in the game, hoefully he will be injury free,i love watching him play.that f/hand when on,is on,great baseliner,i was soo happy for his win, just the thing he needed to regain his confidence,,

master ace thank you for that list in the wta,one big glaring thing that had me reeling, the fact kuzzy has been to5 final so far this year,no trophy's at all in her closet!

JJ will win a slam before murray does. Though I want both of them to win 1 next year.

Answer to if question : Jelena Jankovic

Lira Vega,
Thanks for the link to Moscow but I am at my day job this week so no tennis for me until the weekend. And, my day job bans live streaming.

ira vega gee you and i,could get the pick of the seats in the sadium hey?

A big congrats to JJ she looks very happy and cute in the new car. Imagine a car the cost $lOO,OOO, it must be made of gold. I would be afraid of crashing it. Caroline won so I'm happy.

Hott Sauce took the first set in his match, good for him.

Willy takes the first set. Woohoo, man what a relief. Hoping the 2nd set is a lot easier for him.

garcia-lopez v nicolas devilder 6-2,6-4

Ed,

You sound like a Bills fan as I think I may have read you are from this area or spent some time in Western New York. I hope Edwards is ok as he has been taking a lot of shots in the past few weeks. Edwards at least stays in the pocket.......something J. P. has never learned to do.

I saw a charity exibition a few years ago in Rochester that had Tom Golisano( owner of the Buffalo Sabres) playing Mary Wilson(wife of Bills owner R. Wilson).......Mary(who played on the tour)...................kicked Golisano's butt!

If Edwards comes back the balance of the season the Bills will make the playoffs............but with J. P. behind center all beats are off.

I want both Willy and Seppi to win
and i want both Mauresmo and Cornet to lose
Pfffft for the draw

vienna - men

f.verdasco v v.crivoi 6-4,6-4

am - I tried the link for Moscow but it didn't work for me, which I think is a good thing as I can do a few things.

My SB frze
;(
Hey MA
I agree on your Ace ranking except I would switch between Zvonareva and Radwanska. Rawanska is struggling a bit in the 2nd half of the season. I was impressed with Zvonaravamore recently ...

aa try vira lega link, cornet took 1set 7-6, amelie looks to take the 2nd set 5-3 at the moment, didn't work,go to SB,only thing left?

Thanks for the update from Viena am.
Yay Hott Sauce :DDDD

Meh, that link stopped working after first set...
Amelie can play such breath-taking tennis at times, she hit some amazing winners, was mixing things up, coming to the net, but she also gave away quite a few points with some awful UEs.
Alize was more consistent of the two and even though she was too defensive for the most part of the set she did hit some nice aggressive shots in the TB to take it.

BTW, Kolya's 16 y/o nephew who got a WC lost to Golubev 6-0, 6-0...
Seems like we have another Marko Djokovic on tour.

I've been watching back that Rafa-Andy Us Open semi. As I said at the time, Rafa played much better on the second day. He was well below his best on the first day. Not sure (in response to a question from ND a few days back) if that had anything to do with the fact that he'd been playing all of his matches on Ashe, On Armstrong, the whole atmosphere was different, and the crowd wasn't even there in time to welcome the players on court, as everyone came over from Ashe Stadium. I also heard during the commentary on Sky that he'd had some kind of argument with his uncle on the practice court the day before the semi. Don't know if that affected his mood, but he looked as unhappy as I've ever seen him on court. Not even during that legendary rain-delayed match with Soderling at Wimbledon did I see body language like that from him - possibly because he had the crowd firmly with him.

I think that if the whole match had been played on Ashe (and certainly if he'd played the way he did on the second day) it may well have had a different outcome - to ask any player to go five sets with Rafa playing at that level is asking a lot. Rafa had his chances in that fourth set, though, even with the way that Murray was playing.

I still think that both Murray and Nadal got a rough deal, because there was always very little hope of that second semi finishing on the Saturday, even if it had only gone three sets. I also think I got a rough deal, having crossed the Atlantic to see that specific match as well as the other semi; was it really too much to ask that the world number one could be given a match time that should have permitted his match to finish that day? I think the organisers should have started the first match much earlier in the day, knowing that the bad weather was heading their way. Not that I would really expect them to have done something so sensible.

Rosangel agree with you I also feel sorry for Andy because he didn't get to enjoy the experience of getting into his first GS final and to recover in time for the final.

Oh, Ed - the Hamlet Cup! *tear* That adorable llittle tournament where 19-year-old Sampras went out to 18-year-old Ivanisevic two weeks before winning his first US Open. If I remember correctly, Stefan Edberg was named the "touring pro" out there in Commack (He was also the title winner that year). New Haven might be my hometown, but it seems so corporate in comparison to that little homespun Hamlet Cup. I miss the old tourney at Forest Hills, too. Maybe I'm too old school. But as a spectator, those small tournaments offered a real glimpse of tour life. Must I start going to challengers?

I was aware that Berdych won, but not the score - ouch.

rosangel your comments on this matter, are correct and sensible, may i add, this was the no 1 player in the world,is there any credience to that at all.

Thanks for the award, aussiemarg. Allez me, indeed! Though is important to stay humble, no?
And there should definitely be more people in the stands, hopefully they'll show up later during tournament, some qualifying matches were being played today too.

Master Ace,
that's workers' rights abuse of the highest order re your 7:57 AM post. For what it's worth, I think you can watch highlights on that link too.

WOOHOO Willy finally wins a first rd match, I am so happy for him I wish I could give him a hug :). I know emotions are not allowed but wth. His first serve percentage was up and he served 9 aces. Way too goo Wilstar.

Now I need to go and do my dishes.

Allex Amelie hope you get a win.

That should read allez must of got to excited.

amelie won 2nd set 6-3, third set amelie 2-0 cornet to serve.

cornet won 1st set 7-6,

aw hell no.

first round Italian exodus has begun.
2 down, 3 to go.

Rafa Rocks,
Aggie(2 QF and 2 R16) has better Slam results than Vera(1 R16). Also, Vera had a stretch where she struggled from the French Open until the end of the United States Open even though she won a bronze medal.

Lira Vega,
I will see later today and see if I can catch the highlights and agree that is workers' right abuse therefore I need to check with the powers to be to see if the ban can be revoked. (Doubt it) :)

Ed,

Thanks for the post.

JJ (keeping fingers crossed for her first slam next year). She needs to do all the things that AM said; manage her schedule in particular.

Murray (hoping not) do not like him. But, perhaps he'll win the USO next year. Depends on Roger andDjokovic.

Think that Roger will win Oz and Wimbley. Nadal the French and the USO will be up for grabs.

Berdych: Why bring up old news? Here's hoping Berdych finally lives up to his potential. Which is grand slam calibre. He also could also take the USO.

Del Potro - Might take his first G.S. depends on Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic's form.

Caption writer: Why take glory away from J.J? Not nice to say that she only won because Serena went out. Go JJ.

gee a interesting match coming up,
phil,i need a better service action,teaming up with c.kas,in doubles,mmm,go phil!

Willy vs Hott Sauce next rd wow too much hottness in that match for me.

Rachael - I would love to be able to watch Gonzo / Bolelli. Vamos Gonzo.

soory if noone understands that, it is the one and only phil kohlschreiber,

It was pretty clear that Rafa was the one with the most crowd support on Ashe, on the second day, so the organisers also sabotaged their own chances of getting a Nadal-Federer final, which was presumably what the majority of the potential viewers wanted.

The other alternative is that the two semis should have been started simultaneously, rather than starting the one that was scheduled second after two sets of the first one. I know the idea was to let ticketholders see some of both matches. An early start could have got around that problem. It would have had to be pretty early, though, because the existing schedule was for an 11am start. I'd guess the players would have been content to start even earlier if it had been thought necessary.

A lot of the mess was due to TV commitments, I believe. That's one thing that wouldn't stop the Wimbledon organisers in the event that they decided to start earlier - they would simply expect the BBC to cover whatever they were showing. Which the BBC would do. That's what happened in 2007, when a lot of the second-week matches started early.

Also, Ed:

Palermo? As in Siciliy? My, my, who wouldn't want to play tennis in Palermo? Compared to Commack say. Not sure what you mean by "woefully out of place."

Seppi/Verdasco would be a far hotter second round.
wonder what the hell is up with Andy. he seems to be struggling. think he's had a nagging shoulder injury over the summer. sigh, not much hope for BolSep later then.

oh well Simo, let's get a singles win tomorrow huh. it is unacceptable to lose to Gonzo tomorrow.

Rosangel: right. but Wimbledon is quite capable of making it's own stupid decisions; such as refusing to play on the sacred middle Sunday when they've had a week of rain, thus forcing Nadal to play his match over five days in 2007 I believe. (or, maybe that had nothing to do with it?)

rosangel i was in a sydney bookshop today,in sports section, behold i came across a book, entirly devoted to the 1980 wimbledon final Borg v MacEnroe,by John Fowler,i do not know if you have heard or read this book,i quickly flicked through, looked very interesting to say the least, brought back memories of the epic tie break?,phew then that 5th set, might go back and buy it,hey it was such a good result, wont have to go through that anguish again.

BTW, I think Jankovic is capable of winning a Slam, but she needs to do better on the big points than she did in the US Open final.

I expect Nadal to win Roland Garros next year, and assuming that he's fit, I also think he can retain his Wimbledon title.

The AO and USO are a bit of a toss-up for me at this point. I'd put Murray in the mix, but not as the hot favourite. Let's see how he handles Shanghai.

cornet broke back,in 3rd set,3 all,cornet to serve

Jelena will probably win one if the circumstances align themselves in her favor (which is rather likely). It's tougher for Andy who I think has more talent but has to contend with a very tough top men's field. Good luck to both.

I would love for Roger to skip the FO next year: course, he won't because he has too many points to defend. Just want him to break Sampras's record, and the rest is cream.

The 2007 Wimbledon Middle Sunday fiasco is a whole separate question, not related to TV commitments.
