Fedsampras_thanksgiving

By Jackie, TW Social Director

(I know I had a Federer picture up last week, as well, but this one was too perfect to pass up!)

Happy Thanksgiving, TWibe! Before I get into the meat and potatoes - or turkey and potatoes? - of this post, I thought I'd go off-topic for just a moment (appropriate considering this is our OT space!).

First, I was pleasantly surprised to see some tennis coverage in a couple of mainstream publications this past week. The latest issue of ESPN Magazine features a breathtaking aerial photo of Ana Ivanovic and Elena Dementieva playing their exhibition in Doha, to kick off the year-end championships. People Magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" issue also showcases some tennis hotties of its own - Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Rifling through the issue, I wondered how only Fed and Rafa made it to their pages. Have they seen Feli?

Next, as promised, I present to you my year-end award recipients! You won't see anything that wasn't already expressed in last week's comments, but hopefully this is still of some interest to you:

Most Valuable Player
ATP: Rafael Nadal.
WTA: Serena Williams ... but Jelena Jankovic put up a good fight.
Most Improved Player
ATP: Andy Murray.
WTA: Oddly enough, I feel compelled to go with Elena Dementieva.
Breakout Player
ATP: Juan Martin del Potro.
WTA: I'd put Dinara Safina here, though she's just as worthy of being Most Improved.
Most Disappointing Player
ATP: Richard Gasquet.
WTA: Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Best Rivalry
ATP: This one's tough, but I'm going with Nadal vs. Djokovic because they had some real knockdown-dragout battles this season.
WTA: Jankovic vs. the rest of the WTA. Seems no one is happy she's #1!
Match of the Year, Best of 5 (excluding Wimbledon final)
Federer vs. Tipsarevic at the Australian Open, just because I nearly lost consciousness during that match.
Match of the Year, Best of 3
ATP: Nadal-Djokovic, Hamburg semifinal.
WTA: Serena-Venus, U.S. Open quarterfinal.

Who's excited for 2009?

Finally, as always, please check out our TennisWorld > Real World Facebook group and consider joining if you aren't already a member.

At this moment, I'll bet that the majority of you are either eating or recovering from your Thanksgiving feast. As Pete noted in his "Giving Thanks" post, Thanksgiving is synonymous with food, perhaps more so than any other holiday. They don't call it "Turkey Day" for nothin'! Yet, for vegetarians like myself, the day has nothing to do with turkey.

While I enjoyed the Thanksgiving sides more so than the turkey itself in my meat-eating days, I never thought to take the turkey out of the equation altogether. Yet that's exactly what came to pass the day my family and I took up vegetarianism. Our Thanksgiving meals are still lavish and delicious - we'll have stuffing, mashed potatoes, assorted vegetables, rice, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and more - but it does seem like an affront to the Thanksgiving Gods to not have that bird on the table as its centerpiece.

Yes, I've tried the meatless wonder that is tofurky and found it to be a poor substitute for the real thing - and pretty disgusting to boot. (To be fair, the one time I tried it was several years ago, so I imagine it's improved over time.)

Still, Thanksgiving isn't only about turkeys, pies, and elastic waistbands. It's a time to celebrate family ... and, of course, to give thanks. While I'm on the subject, I'd like to thank you, dear TWibe, for welcoming me as Social Director and for bringing these Deuce Club posts to life. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

(Okay, I can't lie. This year, I'm not doing a big Thanksgiving dinner. Heck, I'm not even with my family. They're out of town, so I'm spending the day with a co-worker and her parents ... and our Thanksgiving meal is taking place at an Italian restaurant. Not a traditional celebration by any means, but it'll do.)

Now it's time for you to share! What does your Thanksgiving meal look like, and what's your favorite dish out of the spread? Do you have any special recipes you're willing to give out?

We can also use this space to discuss today's football action. As I speak, the Seahawks and Cowboys are going at it, and later tonight the Cardinals and Eagles will be in action. Who are your picks?

Before I sign off, I wanted to mention that I plan on reprising the Annual TW Awards, where we give out awards to members of the TWibe. I can't do this alone, so please take some time to think of your honors, and send me an e-mail with your thoughts. Remember, they can be whatever you want them to be - the more creative, the better. (Some examples from last year include the Man, This Is So Creative and Funny I Just Wish I Knew What It Meant award and the It Really Blows Being a KAD for Someone Whom So Many People Dislike award.) I'll be compiling the awards over the next few weeks, so make sure you get your ideas in!

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving on ABC at 8 PM EST tonite.

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 05:06 PM

Jackie, is that photo a recent one? You don't have to answer right away (really, not expecting it), but would appreciate a response later.

Posted by Jackie 11/27/2008 at 05:13 PM

NP: Look, I'm here. :)

That pic is apparently from last year - Fed hosted a traditional Thanksgiving for Pete when they were doing the exos in Kuala Lumpur. Isn't it so appropriate?

Posted by Syd 11/27/2008 at 05:14 PM

Jackie, golly, that picture is swoon worthy. :)

Back later.

Posted by Sam 11/27/2008 at 05:15 PM

Nice to see a picture of two of my all-time favorites.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 05:18 PM

NP - sorry, had to go for a bit - I have not seen the new Bond film, I did not like Casino Royale much, and a friend told me you had to remember the whole plot to follow the new one.

Evening, Jackie!

*demands Rafa pictures*

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 05:18 PM

Thx, Jackie. Kinda figured that, 'cause I'm sure the two getting together could've never escaped the TWibe's attention. :)

Posted by Jackie 11/27/2008 at 05:18 PM

I knew that pic would be a hit. :)

Posted by Jackie 11/27/2008 at 05:20 PM

Evening, jewell! I'm SORRY ... but I just couldn't resist!

NP, I'm just surprised no one posted this pic earlier!

Posted by Master Ace 11/27/2008 at 05:21 PM

NFL games are duds so far:

Tennessee 47 Detroit 10
Dallas 21 Seattle 3 2nd quarter

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 05:22 PM

I was just kidding about the Rafa pictures, btw. :)

Even I think Feddy is cute, above.

Can I give you a Christmas dinner instead, Jackie? Hope you have a fantastic evening. :)

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 05:23 PM

"Nice to see a picture of two of my all-time favorites."

Hear, hear.

Gotcha, jewell. And gotta say I did like Casino Royale. Sure, it's a bit overlong, and Vesper's drowning scene doesn't make any sense, but really, who gives a f*ck?! It's a Bond flick.

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 05:25 PM

You got that right, Jackie. I didn't even know they had a Thanksgiving(-style) dinner.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 05:25 PM

Does it make sense to say that the shape of the storyline was odd, NP? - that's what I felt. I didn't hate it, just, meh. Even for Daniel Craig.

My favourite Bond is Roger Moore, so I'm probably not a very good judge. :)

Posted by Jackie 11/27/2008 at 05:26 PM

jewell, of course you can. :)

I'm at my co-worker's house now ... it's AMAZING here ...

Posted by Jenni 11/27/2008 at 05:29 PM

MA, Koren Robinson cannot catch a pass without binoculars and copious amounts of superglue. And Hasselbeck looks very rusty. Blah.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 05:29 PM

Oh, Jackie - thanks for the awards information. :)

Posted by Sam 11/27/2008 at 05:30 PM

Master Ace: Do you expect the 3rd NFL game to be a dud as well?

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 05:31 PM

jewell, the only thing I ask of Bond flicks is kick-ass entertainment. Don't really care about the storyline as long as it isn't too obviously dumb. But I haven't seen many Roger Moore 007 films, so I'm prolly not a very good judge, either. :)

Posted by Sam 11/27/2008 at 05:31 PM

"Koren Robinson cannot catch a pass without binoculars and copious amounts of superglue"

LOL Jenni. *hands her a beer (or drink of her choice)*

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 05:33 PM

Hm - Roger Moore's were daft, really. But fun.

I think maybe I just have a thing about eyebrows.

Posted by Jenni 11/27/2008 at 05:33 PM

Hey, Sam! What is the 3rd game anyway? I'll probably miss most of it due to dinner but we may catch the tail end.

Posted by Master Ace 11/27/2008 at 05:33 PM

Sam,
NFL network are the big winners today as that game should be interesting.

Jenni,
Seattle is moving the ball but they can not get the crucial play needed to keep the drive alive as Hasselbeck just got sacked again with them losing 24-3.

Posted by Master Ace 11/27/2008 at 05:35 PM

Jenni,
Arizona Cardinals at Philadelphia Eagles. If Arizona win, they win the NFL Joke Division.

Posted by Sam 11/27/2008 at 05:36 PM

Hey Jenni: Eagles-Cardinals (in Philly). Not sure if I want to watch, given the way the Eagles have played in recent weeks. Might ruin my appetite!

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 05:36 PM

Well, Moore did star in the best-titled 007 flick ever: Octopussy.

Posted by Sam 11/27/2008 at 05:36 PM

"NFL Joke Division"

LOL MA

Posted by Jenni 11/27/2008 at 05:36 PM

MA, I don't think I've ever seen you be as sarcastic as you are about the NFL West and its teams. :) Not that I blame you, but it's still kind of amusing as an NFL West fan.

Posted by Jenni 11/27/2008 at 05:37 PM

NFL = NFC. The Seahawks are making me stupid.

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 05:37 PM

But nothing beats Pussy Galore.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 05:38 PM

Good title, pity about the film.

For a moment there I thought the Joke Division was a real thing.

Posted by Maha - Feeling the Happy-ness-ness despite all the issues!!! (Long Live The Mighty Federer) 11/27/2008 at 05:39 PM

OMG pretty picture!!!!! LOL.

Watched two episodes of Doctor Who! Now I'm going to waste 21 minutes until the internet is cut off at 11 pm for the night. Woohoooo.

We had Thanksgiving dinner today! The turkey and cranberry sauce were good but the ice cream was a bit umm... icky.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 05:40 PM

Maha - you get Thanksgiving dinner at your school?

*envious*

Posted by Master Ace 11/27/2008 at 05:40 PM

Seattle is in the red zone as the 2 minutes warning came.

Dallas 24-3

Posted by ptenisnet 11/27/2008 at 05:41 PM

Thanksgiving has to have one of the lowest (time for actual activity)/(time for preparation) ratio. Somewhere on par with drag racing.

Posted by ptenisnet 11/27/2008 at 05:42 PM

Maha
What are these circumstances that you live in where they place a curfew on the internets?

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 05:45 PM

Welcome back, ptenis. For some reason I was thinking about that shower scene in Psycho. Hope that doesn't bother you.

Posted by Jenni 11/27/2008 at 05:45 PM

Oh, for the love of Pete. *shakes head*

Posted by ptenisnet 11/27/2008 at 05:47 PM

Not at all NP, unless there is a specific reason why you were thinking of the shower scene in Psycho.

Posted by Maha - Feeling the Happy-ness-ness despite all the issues!!! (Long Live The Mighty Federer) 11/27/2008 at 05:47 PM

LOL ptenisnet, these circumstances are known by the name of "boarding school in England".

yeah, jewell! Usually Thursday evenings are pizza nights!!! But today, they served pizza at lunch! Everyone was surprised (not that we were complaining :D) but then some girls decided we'd get Thanksgiving dinner for supper... that was the best explanation. Turned out to be true, too!

Posted by Vanessa (trying hard to be a good girl) 11/27/2008 at 05:49 PM

Jackie,
Hope you've had a wonderful day so far. In my family thanksgiving is a never ending affair so I had to sneak out for a little while to check out your post.
Nice list, I agree with almost everything.
As for that picture, I don't think I need to say anything since as my twin you know me all too well, lol

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 05:49 PM

Maha, do you get chips with the pizza?

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 05:51 PM

Well, you did say you were ordered to go take a shower, and since we (the TWibe, not just we two) were talking about movies the most famous shower scene in cinema just came to my mind. Don't worry, there was no more dubious reason than that.

Posted by Maha - Feeling the Happy-ness-ness despite all the issues!!! (Long Live The Mighty Federer) 11/27/2008 at 05:51 PM

jewell... herby potato wedges! Even better than plain ol' chips! We do have fish n chips Friday lunchtimes!

Posted by ptenisnet 11/27/2008 at 05:52 PM

"boarding school in England".

That'll do it. I hope you get up to mischievous shenanigans, such as tie the headmaster's cat to the church bell or dye your roommates hair blue.

Jewell
By chips do you mean american chips or french fries?

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 05:52 PM

Thanks, Maha.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 05:53 PM

Sorry ptenisnet - french fries.

Posted by vetmama 11/27/2008 at 05:54 PM

NP
I totally agree about A Christmas Story. Amazing how it was so pitch perfect throughout.
Always makes me remember why I love family, warts and all.

My husband and I will sometimes jokingly imitate the dad's strangled pseudo-swearing whenever we do something painful, like stub a toe. It never fails to get a laugh.

Posted by Jacko (Private Detective) With Tennis Withdrawal Symptoms 11/27/2008 at 05:54 PM

YAY MY JJ got an AWARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!LOL
Breakout cud be Safina/Wozniacki/Azarenka/Cornet/Radwanska/Cibulkova!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!LOL . . . .WTA always has loadsa up and comers. . . . .and wat have you!!!LOL

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 05:55 PM

Would like to link to a clip on YouTube, but looks like you gotta sign up 'cause it may be "inappropriate." Excuse me, but I find this far more inappropriate than any scene from Psycho:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaP9eiWuX3s

Posted by ptenisnet 11/27/2008 at 05:56 PM

no need to be sorry jewell. just one of those things.

NP. gotcha. I have to say, I am racking my brains and I can't think of another shower scene, much less a famous one.

Posted by Maha - Feeling the Happy-ness-ness despite all the issues!!! (Long Live The Mighty Federer) 11/27/2008 at 05:58 PM

Yay for Jacko and HIS JJ!!!!

NP!!!!!!! We don't exactly do THAT sort of stuff... it's a very proper private girls' boarding school and... you get it. But we do mess around a lot. Two of my friends and I, we've been studying here for... what... 2 and a half months... and we've already become the best in the school at losing Physics equipment, mainly by letting it fly into the sky attached to a bunch of helium balloons.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 06:01 PM

Hey Jacko!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 06:01 PM

VM, you're actually agreeing with something I said? Must be cranberry sauce. Anyhoo, yeah, the pseudo-swearing is only one of the film's many charms. (Though I'd say nothing beats that last "Sons of bitches!!! Bumpases!!!) It's really a mistake to call anything perfect, but if I had to choose among films, A Christmas Story would be one of 'em.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 06:04 PM

It was clearly a mistake to google 'shower scene'.

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 06:04 PM

ptenis, you're not alone in that department. :)

Maha, not sure what you're talking about....

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 06:05 PM

jewell is playing innocent. Like she never tried that before. Uh-huh. :)

Posted by Jacko (Private Detective) With Tennis Withdrawal Symptoms 11/27/2008 at 06:07 PM

Sorry, NP, that was addressed to ptenisnet!!!!! Sorry. Getting my brain muddled up.

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 06:08 PM

Here's the original version. Video itself isn't much better, but features far superior singing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWwyjmSbJPs

NP, Maha. :)

BTW just realized the song is as anti-NO MA'AM as it can get. Again I blame cranberry sauce.

Goodnight, Jacko, it was good to see your exclamation marks, however briefly. :)

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 06:12 PM

*looks at NP with Who, me? expression*

Posted by Maha (on stupid iPhone) 11/27/2008 at 06:14 PM

Oh and yeah, ptenisnet! Might I mention... Since I'm now in lower sixth form, we get our own rooms to ourselves... So no roommates!
Plus, we have a headmistress! Not headmaster! Well, principal, as she's called. Head of sixth form's a guy, though. Lots of male teachers too... Like 25%ish. Some pretty good-looking ones, might I add. LOL.

Posted by Maha (on stupid iPhone) 11/27/2008 at 06:16 PM

LOL, bye, Jacko you crazy boy.

hey guys i am back,.love the picture Miss Jackie O,my hubby is a great fan of Pete, saw him play at Wimbledon and the US open,he still thinks Pete was the best on grass,he has seen, sorry Roger,he and i have had arguments on that,i still maintain Roger has more variety in his shots, also better shotmaker, timing of the ball, also the power in his wrist action,is sublime,Rod Laver,in his book"the education of a tennis player" a great read by the way,its all about the wrist action, the power that comes,Rod you were a master,of this,i agree totally.

Is everyone on new diets,or more excercise to combat the over stuffing on the Thanksgiving Day,hey, thank gos its only way day, hey, enjoy i say!!!!

I'm randomly thinking of who the next Doctor is going to be. But then... I come up with the randomest-est topics...
Firstly, I am going to take years to accept the show without David Tennant. Once I'll have done that it'll probably be time to change the new doctor and get a NEW new one!!! LOL.
Secondly, if I'm going to accept anyone as the new Doctor it's John Simm. Unfortunately he's sort of ruled himself out of contention as the Doctor, saying if he returns to the show it'll still be only as the Master :( I'm hoping for some miracle to occur and him to be cast as the 11th Doctor!!!
Thirdly, there is NO way I will accept a woman as the Doctor. I mean, time lords have genders too!!! You can't just put a male time lord in the body of a female human!!! Grrr. Though if something ridiculous like this should happen, it only makes sense that the assistant should be a guy. I'd fancy Gareth David-Lloyd to be the assistant then, as Ianto Jones from Torchwood... But no woman Doctor in the first place!!!!!!!!!!

I am done yapping about nothing and to noone in particular...
