Fedsampras_thanksgiving

By Jackie, TW Social Director

(I know I had a Federer picture up last week, as well, but this one was too perfect to pass up!)

Happy Thanksgiving, TWibe! Before I get into the meat and potatoes - or turkey and potatoes? - of this post, I thought I'd go off-topic for just a moment (appropriate considering this is our OT space!).

First, I was pleasantly surprised to see some tennis coverage in a couple of mainstream publications this past week. The latest issue of ESPN Magazine features a breathtaking aerial photo of Ana Ivanovic and Elena Dementieva playing their exhibition in Doha, to kick off the year-end championships. People Magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" issue also showcases some tennis hotties of its own - Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Rifling through the issue, I wondered how only Fed and Rafa made it to their pages. Have they seen Feli?

Next, as promised, I present to you my year-end award recipients! You won't see anything that wasn't already expressed in last week's comments, but hopefully this is still of some interest to you:

Most Valuable Player
ATP: Rafael Nadal.
WTA: Serena Williams ... but Jelena Jankovic put up a good fight.
Most Improved Player
ATP: Andy Murray.
WTA: Oddly enough, I feel compelled to go with Elena Dementieva.
Breakout Player
ATP: Juan Martin del Potro.
WTA: I'd put Dinara Safina here, though she's just as worthy of being Most Improved.
Most Disappointing Player
ATP: Richard Gasquet.
WTA: Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Best Rivalry
ATP: This one's tough, but I'm going with Nadal vs. Djokovic because they had some real knockdown-dragout battles this season.
WTA: Jankovic vs. the rest of the WTA. Seems no one is happy she's #1!
Match of the Year, Best of 5 (excluding Wimbledon final)
Federer vs. Tipsarevic at the Australian Open, just because I nearly lost consciousness during that match.
Match of the Year, Best of 3
ATP: Nadal-Djokovic, Hamburg semifinal.
WTA: Serena-Venus, U.S. Open quarterfinal.

Who's excited for 2009?

Finally, as always, please check out our TennisWorld > Real World Facebook group and consider joining if you aren't already a member.

At this moment, I'll bet that the majority of you are either eating or recovering from your Thanksgiving feast. As Pete noted in his "Giving Thanks" post, Thanksgiving is synonymous with food, perhaps more so than any other holiday. They don't call it "Turkey Day" for nothin'! Yet, for vegetarians like myself, the day has nothing to do with turkey.

While I enjoyed the Thanksgiving sides more so than the turkey itself in my meat-eating days, I never thought to take the turkey out of the equation altogether. Yet that's exactly what came to pass the day my family and I took up vegetarianism. Our Thanksgiving meals are still lavish and delicious - we'll have stuffing, mashed potatoes, assorted vegetables, rice, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and more - but it does seem like an affront to the Thanksgiving Gods to not have that bird on the table as its centerpiece.

Yes, I've tried the meatless wonder that is tofurky and found it to be a poor substitute for the real thing - and pretty disgusting to boot. (To be fair, the one time I tried it was several years ago, so I imagine it's improved over time.)

Still, Thanksgiving isn't only about turkeys, pies, and elastic waistbands. It's a time to celebrate family ... and, of course, to give thanks. While I'm on the subject, I'd like to thank you, dear TWibe, for welcoming me as Social Director and for bringing these Deuce Club posts to life. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

(Okay, I can't lie. This year, I'm not doing a big Thanksgiving dinner. Heck, I'm not even with my family. They're out of town, so I'm spending the day with a co-worker and her parents ... and our Thanksgiving meal is taking place at an Italian restaurant. Not a traditional celebration by any means, but it'll do.)

Now it's time for you to share! What does your Thanksgiving meal look like, and what's your favorite dish out of the spread? Do you have any special recipes you're willing to give out?

We can also use this space to discuss today's football action. As I speak, the Seahawks and Cowboys are going at it, and later tonight the Cardinals and Eagles will be in action. Who are your picks?

Before I sign off, I wanted to mention that I plan on reprising the Annual TW Awards, where we give out awards to members of the TWibe. I can't do this alone, so please take some time to think of your honors, and send me an e-mail with your thoughts. Remember, they can be whatever you want them to be - the more creative, the better. (Some examples from last year include the Man, This Is So Creative and Funny I Just Wish I Knew What It Meant award and the It Really Blows Being a KAD for Someone Whom So Many People Dislike award.) I'll be compiling the awards over the next few weeks, so make sure you get your ideas in!

Maha is in denial.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 07:00 PM

One asterisk per letter, NP. :)

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 07:03 PM

Here are a few highlights from the Nadal-Moya Chennai SF. Looks like it was one hell of a match:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kz520dVRcVU

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 07:04 PM

Gotcha, jewell. No biggie.

BTW need I mention that Moya once said Sampras was in a different league from Fed and Rafa. Heh heh.

Posted by Maha (on stupid iPhone) 11/27/2008 at 07:06 PM

NO FEMALE DOCTOR. How are we going to expect a female to exceed the expectations of girl-fans (such as me) after watching 3 seasons of David Tennant??!!!??!! In fact, I'm not expecting ANYONE to be able to take his place, be it male, female or unicellular microorganism. Hmph. It ain't going to be Roger Federer. It ain't going to be Christian Bale (here's me agreeing he wouldn't suit the role anyway). So what am I to do?!!!?? Aaaaaargh. David, the Doctor will never be the same for me without you. :'(

Ok getting carried away now....

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 07:07 PM

NP, you darling! - for the Chennai highlights. :)

Not so much for the Moya remark. :)

I think it went to 3 tiebreaks. I wonder if it will be on Master Ace's list?

Posted by Maha (on stupid iPhone) 11/27/2008 at 07:10 PM

NP, shush :P I'm not in denial. There are only two things i've recently been in denial about: 1) Doctor Who returning in 2010 without.. *gasp*... David Tennant!!!
And 2) Me being made to change my physics class, because i'd quite grown to like my old teacher. Quite a lot, actually. (Remember what I said about cute male teachers in my school...)

Posted by gauloises 11/27/2008 at 07:11 PM

Maha ... a female doctor could potentially be awesome for female fans, because we could all think 'I wish I was her' rather than 'oooh, I wish I was his companion'?

See Buffy.

I agree that Tennant is a tough act to follow, but after umpteen million male doctors, I think a female doctor would be interesting. I dream of Miranda Richardson ...

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 07:13 PM

jewell, I don't see why not. Again I didn't see the match, but judging by the level of play from the highlights, I can't think of many other 3-setters that might've been better this year.

Posted by Maha (on stupid iPhone) 11/27/2008 at 07:14 PM

LOL gauloises. You have a point. A very good one.
Though I stick to my "Keep David Tennant as the Doctor" chant :D I'm an idiot.

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 07:16 PM

Maha, hope you won't mind, but... how old are you? :)

Posted by Master Ace 11/27/2008 at 07:17 PM

Jewell,
Good question on the match that took almost 4 hrs to play 3 tiebreaks:)

Posted by Maha (on stupid iPhone) 11/27/2008 at 07:19 PM

NP, I don't think I'm of the age to "mind" being asked how old I am yet :P
I'm 17. Although I tend to often act either much younger, or much older, than that!!!!!

Posted by Sherlock 11/27/2008 at 07:20 PM

There should a rule in the NFL that a game can be ended by a majority vote of the bored-out-of-their-skull audience. I've actually turned to one of the myriad of meaningless college basketball games instead.

Posted by gauloises 11/27/2008 at 07:21 PM

Master Ace, just so you know, I'm so mailing Jackie to nominate you for "poster that most transcends the physical limitations of time, space and finitude".

Maha ... honey, you ARE in denial. He's done. It's over.

NP, I believe Maha is in the highly upsetting "born post 1991" subsection of TW.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 07:24 PM

I knew you would not fall for it, Master Ace. :)

gauloises, you have mail.

I got ID'd to buy alcohol today. *happydance*

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 07:25 PM

Maha, of course you do. :)

Sherlock, looks like today's football sucked. Sorry, man. But NBA is on TNT in just half an hour. :)

gauloises, appears so. I have yet to hit a midlife crisis, though, so her age doesn't upset me much. Hope you feel the same way.

Posted by Master Ace 11/27/2008 at 07:26 PM

Sherlock,
Thank goodness dud 2 is almost over even though Seattle did slow Dallas for a few minutes. Dallas 34-9

Posted by Maha (on stupid iPhone) 11/27/2008 at 07:27 PM

LOL gauloises. I know I AM in denial!!!!! And I'll stay in denial!!!!! No David Tennant.... I can't begin to think of it!!!!! Still... 4 or 5 more episodes to go... They'll be epic!!! And I bet the number of tears I cry during the last episode will be epic too!!! Hahahahaha.

Hmmm... How is the post-1991 sub-category upsetting??!!! It's got me and jacko!!!! And probably Laura too, I think she's 1991 or later... We're the craziest people on TW!!!!! LOL.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 07:28 PM

I vote for Miriam Margolyes as the Doctor.

Posted by Rachael 11/27/2008 at 07:29 PM

christ, I know I'm not exactly elderly, but I'm still that glad my birthdate isn't in the 90's.

sounds so wrong.

Posted by gauloises 11/27/2008 at 07:30 PM

NP, my whole life has consisted of lurching from one sort of crisis to another. To quote Russell Brand - "My life is a series of embarrassing incidents strung together by telling people about those embarrassing incidents."

jewell ... you LIKE getting ID'ed? It happens to me constantly and I HATE it. I'm going to be 26 in March and people still think I look younger than 21? It doesn't help me to feel like a valid adult when the world at large, as represented by supermarket and off-licence staff, refuses to recognise me as such.

Posted by gauloises 11/27/2008 at 07:31 PM

Maha, you're certainly the most punctuation-abusing people on TW.

No, I love your posts, but they do make me feel old. Like I often find myself wanting to tell you to get off my lawn.

jewell ... oooh, totally seconded.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 07:32 PM

Trying to make the best of it, gauloises, that's all. Happens every week so I might as well take it as a compliment. :)

People don't look closely enough, that's all.

Posted by Sam 11/27/2008 at 07:33 PM

Master Ace: Either I'm hallucinating, or Seattle just punted from midfield down 34-9 with under minutes left.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 07:35 PM

BTW, gauloises, have you ever come across this blog:

http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/

It's quite interesting, in the Stephen Fry sense of Quite Interesting.

gauloises thank you very much.moi should be first, forget about receiving a Christmas card forever.

Sam,
Yep, they did...

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 07:36 PM

Gotcha, gauloises. You've made yourself pretty clear.

Posted by Maha (post 1990s freak) 11/27/2008 at 07:36 PM

LOL rachael, the 90s were actually pretty much a waste of a decade... Except for 2 major things: awesome Disney movies like The Lion King and Mulan, and the birthdays of awesomely weirdly crazy people like Jacko and Laura and myself!!! Mwahwahwaha.

Ya know who I vote for as the Doctor??????.....

DAVID TENNANT!!!!!!!!!!! Woooohooo.

Hmmm my point can't get any clearer, can it....

also i was going to invite you to High Tea at the Dorchester Hotel,my shout be the way, looks like it will be Jewell and me,though she has promised not to slip anything in my tea.

Posted by Sam 11/27/2008 at 07:39 PM

gauloises: Trust me, when you get well into your 30s, you'll appreciate getting carded (ID'ed).

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 07:40 PM

Sam: please, do not mention *shudder* 30. It is altogether too close.

Posted by gauloises 11/27/2008 at 07:40 PM

aussiemarg ... What did I do?! Did I imply Maha and her cohorts abuse punctuation more than you? I was going to give you an honourable mention, but I thought you might be offended. Actually I thought you weren't here, but you have a Master Ace-like ability to be everywhere at once.

jewell ... No, I haven't, I'm reading now.

Posted by aussiemarg{rafa nadal,no 1 player,long may he reign} 11/27/2008 at 07:41 PM

I'm actually looking forward to my 30s. I think they'll be less traumatic than my 20s. Actually, I'm hoping against hope.

Posted by aussiemarg{rafa nadal,no 1 player,long may he reign} 11/27/2008 at 07:43 PM

gauloises ok then i still think you are cool,i am a forgiving person as you are aware,ok,we all on for High Tea at the Dorchester Hotel, after we can drink?

Posted by Maha (post 1990s freak) 11/27/2008 at 07:44 PM

Bluddee 'Ell, triple post.... How did THAT happen?!

Haha gauloises, I abuse punctuation only on TW, I can assure you, and only when in the mood! In reality I am a firm believer in the proper use of English grammar and punctuation :D.... Plus.... You have a lawn? Cool. It doesn't have any roses, does it? I don't like roses. Only white ones are nice. The others are icky. If anyone ever offered me a red rose, I'd tell 'em to "get a better flower next time, bub."

Whoops me gone crazy again....

Posted by Rachael 11/27/2008 at 07:45 PM

Maha - I have some hazily fond memories of the 90's don't get me wrong. I made Spice Girls dance routines with the best of 'em.

Calvin Harris has made me more than ashamed to be from the eighties anyway, so I'll never be happy.

jewell - why on earth haven't you sent your photo into the TW Mugshot Gallery?

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/27/2008 at 07:45 PM

Goodnight, all, enjoy your meals and arcane (for me) sports :)

Posted by gauloises 11/27/2008 at 07:48 PM

Sam - I'm well known for my ability to look on the bright side.

aussiemarg - cool! I managed the installation of wireless at the Dorchester, hopefully the bar staff still remember me :)

Maha - actually I have areas at the front and back which could be described as prison yards crossed with Vietnamese jungles. People walking down the street throw rubbish in the front, I throw various articles of stuff out of my window into the back. It's south London.

Posted by ptenisnet 11/27/2008 at 07:48 PM

Stream of consciousness is a lovely thing.

I'm on for High Tea, aussiemarg!!!! With lots of chocolate fudge cake and choc chip cookies and Roger Federer themed table decorations!!!! Jacko and I will invite ourselves and also Laura... Every tea party needs at least a couple of (in this case, three) crazy teenagers to muck about. Ok Laura is pretty sane, but Jacko and I can start a fight there to amuse everyone when I refuse to have any glitter and sparkle in the party while he insists it's a key to JJness and therefore world domination and...

I'm doing it again, aren't I? Abusing punctuation and not making any sense?

So the Wizards are playing the Magic tonite. How the hell can a wizard fight against magic and vice versa? Doesn't make any sense.

Posted by Rachael 11/27/2008 at 08:10 PM

I don't like the idea of the posters themselves chosing the award category/titles.

Posted by Maha (Freak of the 90s) 11/27/2008 at 08:12 PM

Poster awards!!!!!
Imo: best poster award 2008 goes to.... *drumroll* Roger Federer poster I ordered online yesterday after receiving a random mail offering a 20% discount + FREE shipping!!!! (which would actually be pointless because it IS just a UK based store anyway). Received tough competition from one of the three Doctor Who (I.e. David Tennant) posters I have... But undying love and devotion to Roger won out in the end. Yayyyy!!!!

....
...... Wait... You were talking about TW "posters", weren't you.... Whoops.

Posted by ptenisnet 11/27/2008 at 08:12 PM

Rachael, the categories themselves are gags, so it's all in good fun.

Posted by Jackie 11/27/2008 at 08:12 PM

gauloises: SO looking forward to it! Please e-mail me at my tennis.com address (linked above).

Hi, Maha! Like the new handle. I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed the '90s. :)

aussiemarg! Thanksgiving was just great - and no, I didn't eat very much at all. In fact, I'm starving at the moment and just made myself some eggs. LOL. And you?

Posted by gauloises 11/27/2008 at 08:13 PM

aussiemarg - oh, yes. Of course. Well, we have to maintain standards somehow :)

Posted by mina 11/27/2008 at 08:14 PM

Jackie!!! i freakin' love this pic!!!

i agree with jewell, we getter get some Rafa pics on Deuce Club soon! LOL

and yeah, i was wondering why People Mag's list only had Fed and Rafa, there a lot of other hott guys in tennis...they must be blind to not have noticed The Pretty One :)

LOL, Jackie, that's an awesome award!

Canadian Thanksgiving was a month or so back and I celebrated it with, er, sushi. But hey, I was pretty grateful! They were very good home made sushi at a friend's place :D

Rest assured that I won't include anything offensive.

Hey!!!! There should be a Most Dedicated Tea-maker category. For the one and only... We all know. And a Most Glittery one too. Again, no guesses there!

Posted by Sher 11/27/2008 at 08:19 PM

Most Likely To Marry Ana Ivanovic - well we all know, don't we? ;-)

Posted by Syd 11/27/2008 at 08:19 PM

Oh, Sher. I bet that doesn't last until the end of next year. :)

Posted by Jackie 11/27/2008 at 08:19 PM

You guys, these are quality awards!!! As I said above, can you e-mail your ideas? I fear I'll miss some if I just go by what you post here. Thanks for cooperating. :)

Hey Jackie! Love the picture up top. I started reading the Sampras book today and it's very good.

I'm a vegetarian too, but I didn't do the Tofurky thing. Yuck! But everything I cooked came out great. It's been a fun and relaxing day.

Poster awards? I'll have to think about it since there's so many great and interesting posters here.

ptenisnet - I don't dislike the awards. the awards are great. I've been a part of many board awards on a band forum I modded while I was at college. (best member 2004!)

I understand the premise and the point, and can't adequately explain what I meant, so forget it.

Syd, how dare you choose a Fed fan for "Most Sensible". :)

"How the hell can a wizard fight against magic and vice versa? Doesn't make any sense."

NP, that was very well done. :)

Ah, the Vince Guaraldi Trio's "Charlie Brown Christmas" soundtrack on my stereo. Good stuff.
