Fedsampras_thanksgiving

By Jackie, TW Social Director

(I know I had a Federer picture up last week, as well, but this one was too perfect to pass up!)

Happy Thanksgiving, TWibe! Before I get into the meat and potatoes - or turkey and potatoes? - of this post, I thought I'd go off-topic for just a moment (appropriate considering this is our OT space!).

First, I was pleasantly surprised to see some tennis coverage in a couple of mainstream publications this past week. The latest issue of ESPN Magazine features a breathtaking aerial photo of Ana Ivanovic and Elena Dementieva playing their exhibition in Doha, to kick off the year-end championships. People Magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" issue also showcases some tennis hotties of its own - Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Rifling through the issue, I wondered how only Fed and Rafa made it to their pages. Have they seen Feli?

Next, as promised, I present to you my year-end award recipients! You won't see anything that wasn't already expressed in last week's comments, but hopefully this is still of some interest to you:

Most Valuable Player
ATP: Rafael Nadal.
WTA: Serena Williams ... but Jelena Jankovic put up a good fight.
Most Improved Player
ATP: Andy Murray.
WTA: Oddly enough, I feel compelled to go with Elena Dementieva.
Breakout Player
ATP: Juan Martin del Potro.
WTA: I'd put Dinara Safina here, though she's just as worthy of being Most Improved.
Most Disappointing Player
ATP: Richard Gasquet.
WTA: Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Best Rivalry
ATP: This one's tough, but I'm going with Nadal vs. Djokovic because they had some real knockdown-dragout battles this season.
WTA: Jankovic vs. the rest of the WTA. Seems no one is happy she's #1!
Match of the Year, Best of 5 (excluding Wimbledon final)
Federer vs. Tipsarevic at the Australian Open, just because I nearly lost consciousness during that match.
Match of the Year, Best of 3
ATP: Nadal-Djokovic, Hamburg semifinal.
WTA: Serena-Venus, U.S. Open quarterfinal.

Who's excited for 2009?

Finally, as always, please check out our TennisWorld > Real World Facebook group and consider joining if you aren't already a member.

At this moment, I'll bet that the majority of you are either eating or recovering from your Thanksgiving feast. As Pete noted in his "Giving Thanks" post, Thanksgiving is synonymous with food, perhaps more so than any other holiday. They don't call it "Turkey Day" for nothin'! Yet, for vegetarians like myself, the day has nothing to do with turkey.

While I enjoyed the Thanksgiving sides more so than the turkey itself in my meat-eating days, I never thought to take the turkey out of the equation altogether. Yet that's exactly what came to pass the day my family and I took up vegetarianism. Our Thanksgiving meals are still lavish and delicious - we'll have stuffing, mashed potatoes, assorted vegetables, rice, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and more - but it does seem like an affront to the Thanksgiving Gods to not have that bird on the table as its centerpiece.

Yes, I've tried the meatless wonder that is tofurky and found it to be a poor substitute for the real thing - and pretty disgusting to boot. (To be fair, the one time I tried it was several years ago, so I imagine it's improved over time.)

Still, Thanksgiving isn't only about turkeys, pies, and elastic waistbands. It's a time to celebrate family ... and, of course, to give thanks. While I'm on the subject, I'd like to thank you, dear TWibe, for welcoming me as Social Director and for bringing these Deuce Club posts to life. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

(Okay, I can't lie. This year, I'm not doing a big Thanksgiving dinner. Heck, I'm not even with my family. They're out of town, so I'm spending the day with a co-worker and her parents ... and our Thanksgiving meal is taking place at an Italian restaurant. Not a traditional celebration by any means, but it'll do.)

Now it's time for you to share! What does your Thanksgiving meal look like, and what's your favorite dish out of the spread? Do you have any special recipes you're willing to give out?

We can also use this space to discuss today's football action. As I speak, the Seahawks and Cowboys are going at it, and later tonight the Cardinals and Eagles will be in action. Who are your picks?

Before I sign off, I wanted to mention that I plan on reprising the Annual TW Awards, where we give out awards to members of the TWibe. I can't do this alone, so please take some time to think of your honors, and send me an e-mail with your thoughts. Remember, they can be whatever you want them to be - the more creative, the better. (Some examples from last year include the Man, This Is So Creative and Funny I Just Wish I Knew What It Meant award and the It Really Blows Being a KAD for Someone Whom So Many People Dislike award.) I'll be compiling the awards over the next few weeks, so make sure you get your ideas in!

Sherlock,

>how dare you choose a Fed fan for "Most Sensible". :)

I was thinking to nominate Tim for the most level headed poster when it comes to Rafa ;-) But I'm thinking you and Tim should share some kind of a co-award for providing us with entertainment over the year, haha

Posted by Rachael 11/27/2008 at 08:27 PM

and I'm just tellin', ptenis.
making it clear I wasn't like, outraged by the thought of board awards.

I'm sure I'll email Jackie some suggestions.

Posted by Sherlock 11/27/2008 at 08:27 PM

LOL. Dang you, Syd. You snuck that one by me. :)

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 08:29 PM

Thx, Sherlock. And the Charlie Brown Christmas ST is a classic, but not sure why you're already listening to it, though. :)

Posted by Maha (Freak of the 90s) 11/27/2008 at 08:29 PM

Hmmm ok all... It's nigh 1:30 am and I must be up at 7 for school and all. Urgh.
So I must bid you all adieu...
BYE ALL!!!!!!!!!!!

*sulks off to bed in a state of a) denial about David Tennant leaving Doctor Who and b) anticipation for Roger Federer poster due to arrive in mail tomorrow or something.

Bye byeeeeeee!!!

Hyperlink problem solved! :) Wow, I just realized I've been linking to it incorrectly this entire time. GO ME!

Ren, I told you you were prophetic! I'll need you to send them to me, though, since I didn't record what you posted last time ...

Posted by Ren (d' kindred soul) 11/27/2008 at 08:31 PM

And oh btw, you can give me that award! Ha-ha!

Posted by Sher 11/27/2008 at 08:31 PM

Jackie, your blue name link works, right?

Posted by Rachael 11/27/2008 at 08:31 PM

I'd quite like some MEN to post their photos, so I can fairly decide who is the hottest.

don't make me give this to naughty.

Posted by C.F. 11/27/2008 at 08:32 PM

Haha "Have they seen Feli?" Good one. I'd argue that Feli is more pretty (er... ok, beautiful) boy than really sexy, but I can see why so many people would find him sexy.

The thing about the People issue is that behind their label "sexiest" I usually think they mean "who is sexy and really powerful/famous/hyped". For them, the year Geroge Clooney is the most powerful guy in Hollywood, he is the sexiest man alive. If the issue had been printed after the Davis Cup final, then maybe, just maybe, Feli Lopez could have been "hot" enough to get in the magazine's radar.

But for "sexy players not in People's radar", I vote for Safin (duh, of course), and another russian - Tursunov. He may not be that hot in colours, but wow, his black&white pic in that ATP Calendar is just great. And he is an awesome blogger.

Posted by ptenisnet 11/27/2008 at 08:32 PM

Well, I wasn't really suggesting that you were outraged or anything.

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 08:32 PM

The Charlie Brown Thanksgiving special is almost over. Still can't believe YouTube doesn't have a single standalone clip of the theme song, but you can check part of it here (fast forward to 3:45):

Safin!

Posted by gauloises 11/27/2008 at 08:33 PM

When ptenisnet was discussing noms last time, I seem to recall nominating myself for 'Most Frequently Drunk / Inappropriate'. I still think I'm a shoe-in. (Shoo-in? What does that even mean?)

Posted by Ren (d' kindred soul) 11/27/2008 at 08:33 PM

Yeah, I will send them to you, Jackie....I'll try to scan all the blogs since August! ha-ha!

Hey NP!

LOL mina. I'll write one last post... I'm not Indian, tho, innit. :D Christmas break starts on the 13th! Yayyyy. And my accent is kinda flexible... Bit More British-ish but can easily be American depending on the situation. :) I'm just weird in everything I say or do!

Posted by Ren (d' kindred soul) 11/27/2008 at 08:34 PM

Jackie: Do you want the pecs to show?

Posted by Jackie 11/27/2008 at 08:35 PM

Yes, ma'am, Sher! And you're speedy. ;)

Friend I spent Thanksgiving with thinks Feli looks like Michael Bolton - I mentioned this before. I just pretend she's not talking when she reiterates the thought, LOL. However, she thinks Safin's a total stud; guess she's not blind after all.

Posted by Sherlock 11/27/2008 at 08:35 PM

Sher, you're killing me with Tim & Rafa. :)

Just don't let Tim make the acceptance speech. It'll cause a TW riot. :)

Posted by Rachael 11/27/2008 at 08:36 PM

okay ptenis. I'm totally giving out this stand off-ish vibe right now aren't I? I apologise.
I'll blame the migrane I've had for about 5 days.

Posted by Sher 11/27/2008 at 08:38 PM

Sherlock, we could use a good riot now and again, eh?

Jackie, one more headed your way ;-)

Posted by ptenisnet 11/27/2008 at 08:39 PM

S'all good rachael. No apology necessary. and for my part, I am sorry if I seemed like I was hounding you on something that's rather silly.

Posted by Sam 11/27/2008 at 08:39 PM

"I immediately thought of you, Sam. Time to throw down, buddy! ;)"

Jackie: ;-)

Eagles up 14-0 in the 1st quarter. Westbrook is the man!

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 08:41 PM

Hey, Ren. Sorry I didn't say hi earlier. Was busy watching Peanuts.

Sherlock, I know. You could've chosen the Thanksgiving theme, though. :)

Posted by mina 11/27/2008 at 08:41 PM

one last post before i leave:

Most Adorable use of the word "Gee" in their posts:
*drum roll*

... the award goes to: AM!!!

:)

Posted by Ren (d' kindred soul) 11/27/2008 at 08:41 PM

Creative juices aren't functioning Jackie...Don't worry it will come!

Posted by gauloises 11/27/2008 at 08:42 PM

ptenisnet - thanks. Oddly, the OED seems to suggest a different version of the racetrack origin, based around "shoe-in" as the correct spelling.

I'm going to file it under 'things I'm going to figure out at some point in my future life, when I am sober and have the time'.

Posted by Ren (d' kindred soul) 11/27/2008 at 08:44 PM

I love Peanuts...my favorite is Charlie Brown!

Posted by Master Ace 11/27/2008 at 08:44 PM

"Sherlock: I think MA is a closet Fed fan too. :P"

Syd,
Not a fan of any players.

Sam,
What is this offense(Westbrook) as they lead 14-0 and just picked off Warner again?

Posted by Sherlock 11/27/2008 at 08:45 PM

Ren, me??? Hey, Sher and Syd were handing them out. I just had to comment on them. :)

Sher, good point. Let the games begin!

All of this talk makes me think of the upcoming AO. It's going to be a really fun one this year.

Sam, congrats on the Eagles. Looking great so far. :)

Posted by Ren (d' kindred soul) 11/27/2008 at 08:46 PM

Are we in for some voting,Jackie?

Posted by ptenisnet 11/27/2008 at 08:47 PM

not at all gauloise. The OED entry is sort of puzzling. I wonder if it is an American vs. British thing.

Posted by Ren (d' kindred soul) 11/27/2008 at 08:47 PM

Sorry Sherlock! Not you... The award should got to Gauloises!

Posted by Ren (d' kindred soul) 11/27/2008 at 08:48 PM

NP, what did (do) you do for thanksgiving?

Posted by Sam 11/27/2008 at 08:49 PM

Master Ace: Balanced attack with a healthy Westbrook (60+ yards rushing) seems to be working wonders early. Plus great field position after the 1st interception helped.

Posted by Sam 11/27/2008 at 08:50 PM

Sherlock: Thanks buddy - hope they can keep it up.

Posted by Master Ace 11/27/2008 at 08:50 PM

Sam,
McNabb just skipped a 3rd down pass as Jackson was wide open.

Posted by gauloises 11/27/2008 at 08:50 PM

*smothers Ren in kisses*

Always good to have some support.

Posted by Sher 11/27/2008 at 08:51 PM

There's someone on here who's got a great voice, who should probably be nominated. Hmm, can't think of a name..... ;-)

Posted by ptenisnet 11/27/2008 at 08:51 PM

MA
Do you have a favourite in any sport l?

Posted by gauloises 11/27/2008 at 08:51 PM

ptenisnet - or one of those "nobody really knows, let's make up our best guess" sort of things. Hardly the first time the OED would have been guilty of that.

Posted by ptenisnet 11/27/2008 at 08:52 PM

Meanwhile the India-England test series seems to be in jeopardy.

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 08:53 PM

Ren, didn't do much. Just ate better food than usual. Will prolly get together with a few friends this weekend.

Posted by Ren (d' kindred soul) 11/27/2008 at 08:53 PM

I don't like to feel bored...but that's how I feel...Or is it because It's friday!

Posted by ptenisnet 11/27/2008 at 08:54 PM

gauloises :-)
Colbert had this gripe that the word "truthiness" wasn't in the OED.

Posted by Master Ace 11/27/2008 at 08:54 PM

Ptenisnet,
No favorites.

Posted by Syd 11/27/2008 at 08:54 PM

Master Ace: I know your stated position.:) Just teasing Sherlock.

Posted by Master Ace 11/27/2008 at 08:55 PM

Syd,
Ok, back to watching Texas A&M/Texas and Arizona/Philadelphia.

Posted by ptenisnet 11/27/2008 at 08:55 PM

You are a difficult person Master Ace.

Posted by Sherlock 11/27/2008 at 08:56 PM

Master Ace, that's impossible. You HAVE to have a favorite. Come on, good man, out with it!! :)

We won't hate you for it. Well, unless it's the Prince of Darkness. :)

Posted by Ren (d' kindred soul) 11/27/2008 at 08:57 PM

You'll be nominated in several award galoises! Ha-ha! The campaign has just started!

Posted by ptenisnet 11/27/2008 at 08:59 PM

Admit it, Master Ace. You wouldn't completely object to the Crimson Tide beating all their opponents by a healthy margin.

Posted by Syd 11/27/2008 at 08:59 PM

Sher: lol! definitely should be nominated.

Posted by Ren (d' kindred soul) 11/27/2008 at 08:59 PM

NP: That's great!

Posted by gauloises 11/27/2008 at 09:00 PM

ptenisnet - the test series will go ahead, but England are flying home tomorrow, like the bunch of enormous wusses they are. At least that's what I've heard.

And I'm sure "truthiness" will make it in once it has four or so written mentions in context. Poor OED, it really wasn't designed for the internet age.

Posted by gauloises 11/27/2008 at 09:02 PM

Oh, Ren. I'm normally not even in your list of people to say hello to, now I have your support?

Truly virtual bribery is a magnificent thing.

Posted by Ren (d' kindred soul) 11/27/2008 at 09:03 PM

And where is AM?

Posted by Sher 11/27/2008 at 09:03 PM

Master Ace, I find that difficult to believe! So...who do you like better than others? You must have a preference, no?

Syd, hint hint!

Posted by Sherlock 11/27/2008 at 09:04 PM

Ahh, Nat King Cole and "The Christmas Song". Never gets old.

Ooooh, good call Ptenisnet. But do you think it's the Crimson Tide or Auburn?

Posted by Sam 11/27/2008 at 09:04 PM

Westbrook with TD #3 (2 receiving, 1 rushing) for a 21-0 Eagles lead!

Posted by Master Ace 11/27/2008 at 09:05 PM

Ptenisnet,
Definitely not a Alabama or Auburn.

Sherlock,
Ok since I got to have a favorite, it is a good ATP and WTA match playing.

Sam,
Westbrook did it again with a TD catch on 3rd down as Eagles lead 21-0

Texas 14 Texas A&M 0

Posted by Ren (d' kindred soul) 11/27/2008 at 09:05 PM

That doesn't mean you can't get an award, Gauloises! Hmm...btw, I specially mentioned you the other day in my first entry, haven't you noticed?

Posted by Sam 11/27/2008 at 09:05 PM

Sherlock: Nat King Cole - what wonderful voice.

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 09:06 PM

Yes, Ren. Could be worse.

Sherlock, so you're a Christmas-starts-on-Thanksgiving guy, eh? Good stuff you've been listening to there.

Posted by Ren (d' kindred soul) 11/27/2008 at 09:07 PM

Rafadoc...are you around?

Posted by Sam 11/27/2008 at 09:07 PM

Master Ace: I think you should change your moniker to Switzerland due to your neutrality. ;-)

Posted by Syd 11/27/2008 at 09:08 PM

Sam: lol!

Posted by Sher 11/27/2008 at 09:10 PM

>I think you should change your moniker to Switzerland due to your neutrality.

Sam, lol, great idea!

Posted by lpb 11/27/2008 at 09:10 PM

Sam, lol at your 9:07pm. How did the Thanksgiving dinner turn out?

Posted by gauloises 11/27/2008 at 09:10 PM

Ren - actually I did notice. I derived a wonderful glow thereof which carried throughout the rest of the day. People kept asking if I was pregnant and I favoured them with merely a benevolent smile, knowing they'd never understand the source of my happiness.

ANYWAY. It's pouring with rain outside and I have to get up in five hours, so goodnight all.

Posted by ptenisnet 11/27/2008 at 09:10 PM

Gauloises
Reportedly they used the Taj as a base for some of the time during the ODI series. Can't totally blame them for thinking "that could have been us". Not to be morbid or anything.

Master Ace: You have a favourite sporting entity and it will be my mission in life to pry it out of you. Be on the lookout because it will take the form of an innocent question like "How about them Magpies?" and before you realize it you will be spilling your fondest hopes and aspirations for them.

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 09:12 PM

Sam, don't mean to ruin a good joke (it really was a good one), but as a wise Italian once said, "The hottest places in Hell are reserved for those who in time of great moral crises maintain their neutrality."

Posted by ptenisnet 11/27/2008 at 09:13 PM

I think you should change your moniker to Switzerland due to your neutrality

Well sure, but then he might be mistaken for a Federer/Wawrinka/Allegro fan and you know what they say about Caesar's wife.

Posted by Sherlock 11/27/2008 at 09:14 PM

Master Ace, you're killing me. :)

Sam, you have great musical taste. :)

NP, well, I actually have been sneaking it in for a while now, but I guess tonight it's official. :)

Posted by Sam 11/27/2008 at 09:14 PM

Hi lpb: Dinner actually turned out well. ;-) Took a nap afterwards ad woke up in time for the Eagles game. Apple pie is baking now. Mmm ...

Posted by gauloises 11/27/2008 at 09:15 PM

ptenisnet - I actually don't blame them at all for wanting to come home to their families. Just being flippant as is my wont in times of tragedy.

And really going now ... *gone*

Posted by Syd 11/27/2008 at 09:15 PM

Ptenisnet: what do they say about Caesar's wife?

Posted by Sam 11/27/2008 at 09:15 PM

Likewise, Sherlock. ;-)

Posted by Sherlock 11/27/2008 at 09:16 PM

That wasn't a catch. The Eagles got robbed!

Posted by Sherlock 11/27/2008 at 09:18 PM

NP, good for you. Someone has to watch the NBA. :)

How are your Wizards doing?

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 09:28 PM

Howdy, Vanessa. Hope you didn't have to run a marathon today.

Posted by NP 11/27/2008 at 09:29 PM

They're losing by 11 pts. At home. I'm shocked out of my consciousness.

Posted by Vanessa (trying hard to be a good girl) 11/27/2008 at 09:30 PM

Hi NP, it kind of felt like it actually. And it hasn't stopped. Just taking a short break before going out. What match are you watching?

Posted by Master Ace 11/27/2008 at 09:31 PM

Sherlock,
Chris Fowler is the play by play man for the Aggies/Longhorns. We will see him in 2 months when the Australian Open begin.
