Fedsampras_thanksgiving

By Jackie, TW Social Director

(I know I had a Federer picture up last week, as well, but this one was too perfect to pass up!)

Happy Thanksgiving, TWibe! Before I get into the meat and potatoes - or turkey and potatoes? - of this post, I thought I'd go off-topic for just a moment (appropriate considering this is our OT space!).

First, I was pleasantly surprised to see some tennis coverage in a couple of mainstream publications this past week. The latest issue of ESPN Magazine features a breathtaking aerial photo of Ana Ivanovic and Elena Dementieva playing their exhibition in Doha, to kick off the year-end championships. People Magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" issue also showcases some tennis hotties of its own - Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Rifling through the issue, I wondered how only Fed and Rafa made it to their pages. Have they seen Feli?

Next, as promised, I present to you my year-end award recipients! You won't see anything that wasn't already expressed in last week's comments, but hopefully this is still of some interest to you:

Most Valuable Player
ATP: Rafael Nadal.
WTA: Serena Williams ... but Jelena Jankovic put up a good fight.
Most Improved Player
ATP: Andy Murray.
WTA: Oddly enough, I feel compelled to go with Elena Dementieva.
Breakout Player
ATP: Juan Martin del Potro.
WTA: I'd put Dinara Safina here, though she's just as worthy of being Most Improved.
Most Disappointing Player
ATP: Richard Gasquet.
WTA: Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Best Rivalry
ATP: This one's tough, but I'm going with Nadal vs. Djokovic because they had some real knockdown-dragout battles this season.
WTA: Jankovic vs. the rest of the WTA. Seems no one is happy she's #1!
Match of the Year, Best of 5 (excluding Wimbledon final)
Federer vs. Tipsarevic at the Australian Open, just because I nearly lost consciousness during that match.
Match of the Year, Best of 3
ATP: Nadal-Djokovic, Hamburg semifinal.
WTA: Serena-Venus, U.S. Open quarterfinal.

Who's excited for 2009?

Finally, as always, please check out our TennisWorld > Real World Facebook group and consider joining if you aren't already a member.

At this moment, I'll bet that the majority of you are either eating or recovering from your Thanksgiving feast. As Pete noted in his "Giving Thanks" post, Thanksgiving is synonymous with food, perhaps more so than any other holiday. They don't call it "Turkey Day" for nothin'! Yet, for vegetarians like myself, the day has nothing to do with turkey.

While I enjoyed the Thanksgiving sides more so than the turkey itself in my meat-eating days, I never thought to take the turkey out of the equation altogether. Yet that's exactly what came to pass the day my family and I took up vegetarianism. Our Thanksgiving meals are still lavish and delicious - we'll have stuffing, mashed potatoes, assorted vegetables, rice, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and more - but it does seem like an affront to the Thanksgiving Gods to not have that bird on the table as its centerpiece.

Yes, I've tried the meatless wonder that is tofurky and found it to be a poor substitute for the real thing - and pretty disgusting to boot. (To be fair, the one time I tried it was several years ago, so I imagine it's improved over time.)

Still, Thanksgiving isn't only about turkeys, pies, and elastic waistbands. It's a time to celebrate family ... and, of course, to give thanks. While I'm on the subject, I'd like to thank you, dear TWibe, for welcoming me as Social Director and for bringing these Deuce Club posts to life. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

(Okay, I can't lie. This year, I'm not doing a big Thanksgiving dinner. Heck, I'm not even with my family. They're out of town, so I'm spending the day with a co-worker and her parents ... and our Thanksgiving meal is taking place at an Italian restaurant. Not a traditional celebration by any means, but it'll do.)

Now it's time for you to share! What does your Thanksgiving meal look like, and what's your favorite dish out of the spread? Do you have any special recipes you're willing to give out?

We can also use this space to discuss today's football action. As I speak, the Seahawks and Cowboys are going at it, and later tonight the Cardinals and Eagles will be in action. Who are your picks?

Before I sign off, I wanted to mention that I plan on reprising the Annual TW Awards, where we give out awards to members of the TWibe. I can't do this alone, so please take some time to think of your honors, and send me an e-mail with your thoughts. Remember, they can be whatever you want them to be - the more creative, the better. (Some examples from last year include the Man, This Is So Creative and Funny I Just Wish I Knew What It Meant award and the It Really Blows Being a KAD for Someone Whom So Many People Dislike award.) I'll be compiling the awards over the next few weeks, so make sure you get your ideas in!

G'night, AM.

Posted by Vanessa 11/28/2008 at 01:04 PM

Rachael, LOL
I still love Hugh Laurie (to the point I got jealous when he kissed Cuddy on the 1st episode of this season, eww)

Posted by Master Ace 11/28/2008 at 01:05 PM

Jewell and Aussiemarg,
Thanks for translation. Guess that will be Venus International tournament for the first half(Wimbledon is cut off). Top 10 players can choose 2 International tournaments to go along with their required 14 Slams and Premier events.

Posted by Vanessa 11/28/2008 at 01:06 PM

Jewell, here it's a video of House

Good Evening everyone!

Thanks, Vanessa and NP. :)

Posted by Sher 11/28/2008 at 01:08 PM

Vanessa, basically all of my friends watch it and they are trying to get me hooked so I hear no end of it.

('post' button dissapeared for a moment there, did anyone else see that?)

Posted by naughty T, no sex please, we're Raffuh 11/28/2008 at 01:08 PM

aaaaaah Rachael, once again you provide me with a serene moment of sniggering in a very public place. I now have a lot of Belgians looking at me in a very strange way.

Posted by Vanessa 11/28/2008 at 01:09 PM

OMG I just realized they have a video on you tube of House and Cuddy!! and to the sounds of pictures of you! I didn't need to see that!, lol

Posted by Vanessa 11/28/2008 at 01:10 PM

Sher, give it a try although I must admit I prefer the earlier episodes. And yes it happens to me sometimes, the page doesn't refresh properly

Posted by Rachael 11/28/2008 at 01:10 PM

I really dislike House as a character and as a programme. a housemate last year used to always put it on when something much funnier clearly would've been on Dave. I hated that housemate.

anyway, I can slink off into the night happy in the knowledge that my only posts on a tennis blog today included Alan Partridge and Blackadder.

Posted by NP 11/28/2008 at 01:10 PM

Evening, Laura.

NP, jewell.

Posted by naughty T, no sex please, we're Raffuh 11/28/2008 at 01:11 PM

House kisses Cuddy??
I am always a bit confused with Cuddy because she played a transexual on Ally McBeal and I cannot quite get passed thinking she is actually a bloke. So with Cuddy trying to get pregnant I just want to shake her and say "for gods sake man, you can't have babies. You are a doctor, don't you know that???"

Posted by Vanessa 11/28/2008 at 01:13 PM

"for gods sake man, you can't have babies
LOL LOL
well House already told her (him, lol) she would be a terrible mother so to be happy she can't have kids

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 11/28/2008 at 01:13 PM

Hey, Laura - weather report from the Northern Waste?

How was college?

Posted by Laura 11/28/2008 at 01:14 PM

Hi NP!

Reading posts up thread and yes I am indeed in the apparently upsetting post 1991 section of TW.

Posted by Sher 11/28/2008 at 01:14 PM

>well House already told her (him, lol) she would be a terrible mother so to be happy she can't have kids

LOL, I see where the NP comparisons come from

Posted by Vanessa 11/28/2008 at 01:15 PM

Sher,
LOL

Posted by Rosangel 11/28/2008 at 01:15 PM

A new post is up for today.

Posted by NP 11/28/2008 at 01:16 PM

Sher is projecting.

BTW today's YC is up.

Posted by Vanessa 11/28/2008 at 01:17 PM

Thanks Rosangel
I'm hitting the road soon but will check it out first

Posted by Laura 11/28/2008 at 01:17 PM

Hi Jewell. Well it has been 6 degrees most of the day and frosty. However I have a brand new coat so will never be cold again outside the house! As for college well did nothing in ICT for 1 and a half hours then did a maths test for a further 1 and a half hours and have another test to do right now. Preperation for january exams. Had to do christmas shopping today as well which I hate doing! Not a great day. How about you?

Posted by Sher 11/28/2008 at 01:24 PM

NP, I'm definetly projecting. I've never even seen an ep, but considering your hate-children-hate-santa kind of days, you can see why I think you fit that line, don't you! don't forget, he's a protagonist.

Amazing what you can find googling "sexy rafa".

Here's a snippet from a random sports fan blog - a certain Dustin developed a man-crush on our Rafa:
"Someone so impossibly gorgeous it's alarming.
I wonder how many people, like myself, turned on the television yesterday afternoon, for what was only meant to be a brief glance into the outside world during a holiday weekend, only to get inexplicably sucked into a tennis match, despite having absolutely no interest in tennis whatsoever. I tuned in midway through the fourth set of yesterday's Wimbledon Final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, and couldn't bring myself to turn it off until I'd sat through a rain delay and, finally, saw Nadal pull off one of the most dramatic wins in any sport, ever, which came about 5 hours after the match began. It was un-f***ing-real.
And just the way it should be, the better-looking man eventually won. Meanwhile, I may have found a new man crush -- good God, that Nadal is one motherf***ing sexy beast. Am I right?"

Well, yep. And though Rafa may still be a puppy not fully matured, he's sex on legs all right. Not because of his biceps, his butt or his smile, but his movement. His walk, to be precise. Oozing testosterone.

Pics do him precious little justice, especially those where he's posing (candid ones are a bit better). But watching him move is something else entirely.

Hanyways... Take a look at some poor attempts to capture Rafa's strut:

Hiya Laura!!!!! Waddup, my fellow post-1991 TWiber! That makes three of us, including mad glitter-boy. LOL! We are such a lonely group! How about... Sergeant Federer's Lonely Hearts Club Band!
No wait... you two aren't Fed KADs... Let's stick to JJiRaFed.

indeed Malimeda Raffuh is the man for all closet cases. Thanks for the proof.

Hello?

I'm loving the energy 'round here. :)

And ... *cough* I rather like Britney ...

Posted by NP 11/28/2008 at 01:52 PM

Sher, I don't hate anyone. In fact one could say I actually love children 'cause I'm all for telling them the truth about Santa.

Posted by harini 11/28/2008 at 03:02 PM

hello! Jackie, i'm late again but i had an excuse: i wasn't near a computer last nite :)

we don't have a thanksgiving 'thing'...it's just a day for the fam to be together and relax. although this year i was with my two best friends, celebrating one's birthday.

hope everyone's had a safe and fun holiday :)

Posted by Sher 11/28/2008 at 03:35 PM

NP, Did I accidentally mistook you for someone else? I remember a few days ago there was a thread with a bunch of people proclaiming they hate children and I think you were one of them.

Your Call for today is up.

Posted by aussiemarg{rafa nadal,no 1 player,long may he reign} 11/28/2008 at 04:31 PM

hi guys,i was over at the new thread, good morning again, managed to catch a few hours sleep, mmmmmmmmmmmm,i am kind of brain functional, having coffee, fix as i speak.

Posted by tina 11/28/2008 at 05:20 PM

I cooked Thanksgiving for what I call my "other family", and I think I gave away the secrets of my version of haute cuisine green bean casserole on a previous thread. I'd forgotten how labor-intensive mushroom soup is, but thankfully I made enough that I've brought home the leftover quantity to make the casserole again to make for a curious friend.

The appeal of David Tennant - and for that matter, Dr. Who - is lost on me. Not for lack of trying - my ex, the Yorkshireman, was obsessed with Dr. Who and was always trying to explain what made it great. Erm, no it's not. The original Star Trek beats it hands-down for "camp value", special effects are crap, and again, with all the hot guys on British television, I personally don't count David Tennant among them - I preferred the other one, the actor from "Shallow Grave".

All I want for Christmas is a dvd of that blasted Wimbledon final that I missed!

Glad to see Tipsarevic match getting an award - that was an all-nighter for me.

Posted by Sher 11/28/2008 at 05:56 PM

>All I want for Christmas is a dvd of that blasted Wimbledon final that I missed!

lol, tina

Posted by tina 11/28/2008 at 06:18 PM

Sher - you laugh?

Not knowing anyone in my circle of gift-giving who's as tennis-mad as I am, I just ordered the dvd for myself. Merry Xmas to me!

Posted by Sher 11/29/2008 at 12:15 AM

tina, only because it was so heartfelt, I could practically hear you say that! :)

tennisdvds.net & http://www.geocities.com/masteroftennis779/ are good for dvds, if you're still looking

Posted by tina 11/29/2008 at 11:45 AM

I ordered it off Amazon, but thanks a million.

The problem is, now I have to start the arduous process of trying to figure out the Xmas gifts this year. I tend to find things for people throughout the year and just give them straight away. Later, I'm always sorry I didn't hold on to them for Xmas or birthdays, but my gypsy lifestyle doesn't lend itself well to hanging on to things.

Oh, the eternal problem of what to get my mother....

Murray vs. Federer in the YEC round robin was a pretty good three setter 2

haven't caught up on this thread or any of the threads in the past few days, but just popping in to say (scream)

GREAT PIC, Jackie !
