Xmas_list_small

By Jackie, TW Social Director

Have we all recovered from Monday's party? I'm still reeling from all of that water-drinking and Bûche de Noël-eating. That was some shindig! I'm really pleased so many of you showed up and am already looking forward to doing it again next year.

The fun isn't over just yet, though. Don't forget that we still have the TW Awards, which Pete and I are thinking of announcing the last week of the month. Please continue to send your nominations here (including your pick for Poster of the Year - one male and one female). We're also moving forward with our contest to name TW's new Poet Laureate and will have more information on the rules shortly.

Wrapping up business matters, don't forget to check out our TennisWorld > Real World Facebook group, if you haven't already. Every week, I get new requests to join, so clearly these weekly announcements aren't all for naught!

Today's Deuce Club topic comes not from the mind of your Social Director but from that of the TWibe's own gauloises!

The past few weeks, we tennis fans have enjoyed looking back at the season that was ... but as January draws near, it's only right that we begin to look ahead to 2009. It's in that spirit that gauloises came up with the idea to create our tennis "wish lists" for 2009! And the timing couldn't be better, since Christmas is exactly a week away.

Sure, it's been a while since most of us have made an actual Christmas wish list - or has it? C'mon, you know you've told everyone about how much you want that brand spankin' new iPhone or those Stuart Weitzman boots. So, this should be a piece of cake.

Before I solicit your thoughts, though, it's only right that I share the lovely gauloises's list, considering this is her brainchild and all. Enjoy - and try not too fall down from laughing, as I did!

Mario_small 1) Murray to play Federer in the final of a slam, and win.
2) Crazy Elf to stay in the top 10. Maybe win a Masters or two, make the semis of a Slam. I'm not greedy.
3) A Channel Slam for Federer. (It could happen!)
4) Baby Owl to beat Rafa again, because that was fun.
5) Mario to stay away from mono, jet skis, barbells, and lepers; somehow stay healthy; and make a surprise run to the Wimbledon final, where he will play in hotpants.
6) Ernests to, for the love of God, STOP choking away matches that are entirely there for the winning, get his ranking up, and continue being adorable.
7) JJ to win a Slam.
8) Davis Cup redemption for the Argies!
9) Marin to have a banner year and make the WTF, where I will cheer him on.
10) Great Britain to get a second player into the ATP and WTA top 100. (Yeah, that one's just pure madness. But I can dream ... )

Reference: Crazy Elf = del Potro, Baby Owl = Simon. (That gauloises loves her nicknames.)

I didn't have time to finalize my own wish list, but I do know it would at least include the following:

1) TMF to win his 14th Grand Slam, tying Sampras's record ... only to then break it by also winning his 15th. Which Slams? Doesn't matter to me!  (gauloises's #3 also works.)
2) Gilles "Babydaddy" Simon to continue to make his presence known - but remain obscure enough to where I can have him all to myself on those practice courts in Indian Wells and Cincinnati.
3) Gasquet, Nalbandian, and Ferrer to remember what it's like to, you know, win. Wait - and Kuznetsova.

Now it's your turn. Tell us what you'd like Santa to bring you for the 2009 tennis season. (For those of you who don't celebrate Christmas, replace "Santa" with "the mailman" or some other such entity who comes bearing gifts.)

Maybe Master Ace can keep track of whose wishes actually come true. Doesn't that sound like fun, MA?

Santa Claus is fake. Go tell all the children in the world.

Posted by Jackie 12/18/2008 at 05:13 PM

NP, don't make me sic the Mod Squad on you.

Posted by gauloises 12/18/2008 at 05:13 PM

Is it too late to start being good? I'm not sure if this will surprise anyone, but I've generally been more naughty than nice in 2008 so far.

(Also ... my name's in the DC! I'm famous!)

Posted by Master Ace 12/18/2008 at 05:16 PM

Santa to somehow give me at least 2 free tickets for all 3 days to the Davis Cup tie b/w Switzerland and United States in Birmingham, Alabama.

"Maybe Master Ace can keep track of whose wishes actually come true. Doesn't that sound like fun, MA?"

Jackie,
I will leave that request in your lovely and reliable hands. I have enough on my 2009 tennis plate:)

Posted by Master Ace 12/18/2008 at 05:17 PM

Gauloises,
Congrats to coming up with the DC topics therefore, you are now famous.

Posted by NP 12/18/2008 at 05:18 PM

Jackie, the truth should never hurt. :)

Posted by Jackie 12/18/2008 at 05:19 PM

gauloises, if this were based on naughty vs. nice, pretty sure no one here would get what they wanted.

MA, clearly if YOU'RE turning down that job, there's no way I'm assuming it! And I was just teasin'. ;)

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 12/18/2008 at 05:20 PM

No more Sarah Connor Chronicles till February...how will I cope?

Lol, Jackie and gauloises!

My tennis wish list: Rafa to win three slams, Roger one, and Murray for WTF. Rafa's knees to stop hurting.

Britain to get back into the DC world group.

Lovely Jelena J to win a slam. Sharapova to come back from injury and win a slam. And Venus and Serena to get one each. Ana for the YEC.

And, for Master Ace to get TW (or is it Tennis Magazine?) press credentials for US-Swiss DC tie. ;)

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 12/18/2008 at 05:24 PM

NP, do you remember a few weeks back, you offered to send an MP3 of Mozart's Serenata Nocturna (correct spelling as necessary)?

If I ask you nicely, would you mind sending it along?
*asks nicely*

Posted by greenhopper 12/18/2008 at 05:25 PM

1-4 -- meh.
5, 7 & 9 -- yes, please for the love of everything holy.
others -- couldn't care.

great topic, ladies...
Add project 45 materializing and Sania rising back to the top somewhere in there and I'm all set.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 12/18/2008 at 05:25 PM

Perhaps this is a good time to re-name "William Cobbett Land", too. ;)

Posted by NP 12/18/2008 at 05:26 PM

jewell, will do, but not now. Am helping a friend with his MBA essays again.

Posted by gauloises 12/18/2008 at 05:27 PM

jewell - yes! I'm now officially Farnham's greatest child. Take a hike, Cobbett and Wilkinson. And some random cricketers.

Posted by greenhopper 12/18/2008 at 05:27 PM

oh and add 6 too.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 12/18/2008 at 05:28 PM

thanks, NP. :)

I didn't mean right now...that wouldn't be asking very nicely, would it, really?

I hope your friend is grateful for the assistance!

Posted by ptenisnet 12/18/2008 at 05:29 PM

Also 11
which might run counter to one of the first 10.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 12/18/2008 at 05:29 PM

Wilkinson?

Posted by ptenisnet 12/18/2008 at 05:31 PM

He played rugby around there. didnt you know?

Posted by gauloises 12/18/2008 at 05:31 PM

killer photo, m'media.
Kolya looks like her kid though.

I don't follow rugby.

It looks like she's about to drink his blood.

Posted by Nancy 12/18/2008 at 05:34 PM

Gauloises honey, you're already a star. Jackie's emphasized that.

"3) Gasquet, Nalbandian, and Ferrer to remember what it's like to, you know, win. Wait - and Kuznetsova."

Thank you my Jackie!(sans the Gasquet part, I do not care for that kid) YES PLEASE! Santa, look alive and do something damnit.

What, you don't think I could know something about rugby?

It's the magic of google. That's prolly the best thing about it. That it allows one to seem informed.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 12/18/2008 at 05:35 PM

I wrote one!

Posted by gauloises 12/18/2008 at 05:36 PM

ptenisnet - just slightly startled. But impressed.

Posted by crazyone 12/18/2008 at 05:37 PM

While Gauloises' list isn't exactly what I'd have written up for myself, I'd be pleased as punch if it happens, especially #3 and #6. My god if #6 doesn't happen I'm gonna be flipping mad.

Posted by ptenisnet 12/18/2008 at 05:38 PM

Thank you. Didn't mean to startle though.

Very welcome, Nancy. An in-form Nalby is good not just for you but for tennis!

GH

Kolya to win a slam. As also Dementieva. Well come to the Hard Luck Cases Cafe.

Posted by ptenisnet 12/18/2008 at 05:41 PM

That should read "Welcome ..."

Posted by Ginger 12/18/2008 at 05:43 PM

my wish list (in no particular order!!)
1. Amelie gets her form back so we can enjoy her beautiful game again
2. Rafa wins the US or Aussie open (I am not picky)
3. Justine comes back so we enjoy her spectacular game again
4. Andy Roddick wins a slam - any slam because he is a good guy and I love his pressers and his charity work
5. JJ and/or Dinara win their first slam
6. Svetlana gets her groove back

Posted by gauloises 12/18/2008 at 05:44 PM

crazyone

I thought of you and all those match points against Gonzo in - where was it? Vienna? - when I wrote that one.

Posted by greenhopper 12/18/2008 at 05:46 PM

Ah, Dinara...

If I pretended to be gauloises for a minute, I'd say too many favorite players, and I want all of them to win a slam/masters/tier I event before they *die*.

Posted by Rosangel 12/18/2008 at 05:47 PM

Wishes for 2009? Honestly?

1) Rafa to retain his Wimbledon title.
2) Rafa to become the first man to win Roland Garros 5 times in a row, preferably without dropping a set, as occurred in 2008.
3) Rafa and Andy Murray to meet in the US Open final - I would like Rafa to win this, because Borg never did, and I think it would be a huge thing as far as his reputation is concerned.
4) Rafa and Andy Murray to meet in the AO final. I always support Rafa, but can live with whoever wins.
5) Novak Djokovic to be more consistent in 2009 - I really like his rivalries with both Murray and Nadal, and hope to see him stay in the top three or four.
6) Rafa to be the number one player throughout 2009.
7) Andy Murray to become world number two by year-end.
8) Rafa to win everything in sight on clay, as usual. Especially to reclaim his Rome title. No blisters, no knee problems.
9) Marin Cilic to break into the Top 10. Happy if David Nalbandian pulls himself together and returns there. Also happy if Andy Roddick has a good year and stays close to the top.
10) Jelena Jankovic to win a Slam, preferably the AO (i.e. ASAP). I'd also be happy to see Venus Williams retain her Wimbledon title. My final wish for the WTA is that Maria Sharapova returns healthy, and that overall whoever occupies the number one position at the end of 2009 at least wins a Slam.

One net result of this list is that I'd be very pleased if Pete Sampras remained the all-time leader in Slams won - I honestly was a fan, and watching him certainly gave me pleasure. I'd also like to avoid an inevitable GOAT debate, should his total be overtaken. And that isn't because I don't consider Federer to be one of the greats.

Posted by gauloises 12/18/2008 at 05:49 PM

Rosangel - there were three whole wishes on your list that weren't Rafa-related. Are you sick or something?

Posted by aussiemarg{rafa nadal,no 1 player,long may he reign} 12/18/2008 at 05:50 PM

Miss Jackie O girl you keep outdoing yourself, great column, moi had the biggest hangover ever in her history no? will try to put on some type of thinking cap, whatever!

Posted by crazyone 12/18/2008 at 05:51 PM

gauloises: that one was at least against a decent opponent. I know you're a Teimuraz fan, but why would he lose to Teimuraz Gabashvili???

Posted by aussiemarg{rafa nadal,no 1 player,long may he reign} 12/18/2008 at 05:52 PM

Rosangel gee we are on the same page with Rafa, thank you,for your most wonderful tennis brain and list

Posted by wish list 12/18/2008 at 05:52 PM

ok so here's my wish list.

1) Djokovic wins australian again
2) he goes on to win the us open
3) He becomes number one in the world.

and that's why they call it wishful thinking. please don't make fun of me. i know the chances of it happening are very slim, given murray's current form and of course rafa and fed. but this is honestly wut i hope for....

Posted by aussiemarg{rafa nadal,no 1 player,long may he reign} 12/18/2008 at 05:55 PM

Crazyone glad you are around, need your help and advice how to post photos of tennis tournament on this page,i will be going to Sydney Medibank,ok I am not in Rosangel's leaque when it comes to taking great photos, but need your advice thanks.

Posted by crazyone 12/18/2008 at 05:57 PM

hi aussiemarg, I have to leave soon but I'll be happy to give you advice later on how to do that.

Posted by aussiemarg{rafa nadal,no 1 player,long may he reign} 12/18/2008 at 05:58 PM

Gauloises please leave Rosangel alone, she is wonderful,as most rafa fans,we do give other players a chance or a look in,we remain humble at all times, not like some others no?

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 12/18/2008 at 05:58 PM

Marian, you're a darling. :))

gauloises - I will graffiti your name over that pub on the road from Hindhead to Farnham tomorrow, I am going that way. ;)

Jackie, hope the storm is not too bad.

And, goodnight, everybody. :)

Posted by aussiemarg{rafa nadal,no 1 player,long may he reign} 12/18/2008 at 05:59 PM

Crazyone thanks so much,in present head form,I need all the help I can get.

Posted by C Note 12/18/2008 at 05:59 PM

My Wish List:

1. Baby E wins another Slam and climbs into the stands to have a hot makeout session with Fernando.
2. The Prince of Darkness to get his sense of humor back.
3. Muzz wins Wimbledon.
4. A Glam Slam final b/w Baby E and Masha
5. Serbia wins Fed Cup
6. Dinara and Zeljko finally declaring their true love in spectacularly dramatic fashion
7. Fed and JJ go slamless (sorry guys)
8. Jo stays healthy
9. Baby Owl and Mono Mario start playing pantsless
10. Not one day of rain during Wimbledon now that the roof is up.

So yeah, none of that is happening. I'll gladly take my lump of coal now.

Posted by gauloises 12/18/2008 at 05:59 PM

AM - just kidding. Truly, you Rafans are an example to us all.

crazyone - blinded by the sequins?

Posted by Rosangel 12/18/2008 at 06:01 PM

gauloises: I could go on, but it's pointless pretending that Rafa nd Murray aren't my favourite players right now.

I have other wishes, though.

Um, I'd be happy if Spain win the Davis Cup again....one of my favourite moments of 2008 was seeing Lopez and Verdasco clinch it.

I'd love to see Jamie Murray and Jelena Jankovic play again at Wimbledon and win another mixed doubles title.

I'd like to see Ana Ivanovic regain her form in 2009.

I'd like to see Justine Henin return to the tour, and I'd love it if Amelie Mauresmo could have one more moment in the sun, preferably with a Slam title.

I would like to see Andy Murray at least reach a semifinal at RG this year.

I'd also be happy to see players like Simon and Tsonga cement their places in the top 10.

Posted by gauloises 12/18/2008 at 06:01 PM

jewell - brilliant, I always wanted a pub named after me.

Posted by ptenisnet 12/18/2008 at 06:01 PM

7. Fed and JJ go slamless (sorry guys)
pffffffft

Posted by Samantha Elin 12/18/2008 at 06:06 PM

C-note, the JJ fans are going to get you.

Posted by Ginger 12/18/2008 at 06:07 PM

Hi Rosangel
I am happy to hear that you share my wish (5:43) regarding Amelie and JJ and Andy Roddick.. and Rafa

Posted by Rosangel 12/18/2008 at 06:08 PM

aussiemarg: somehow I had a feeling that you might be on the same page:)

Posted by C Note 12/18/2008 at 06:10 PM

Samantha Elin -- It's not the JJ fans I'm scared of. It's the Fed fans.

Besides, I think I softened the blow by admitting that none of the stuff on my list will happen. My money is on JJ for the AO, Fed for Wimbly. Ah well, it was fun while it lasted. A futile JJ is a fun JJ.

Posted by Pspace 12/18/2008 at 06:11 PM

Wish list:

1) French Open for Rog - I know he wants the Wimby more, but come on Rog. Climb this mountain for GOAT.

2) 5 Fedal matches

3) First slam for Muzz, but which one? Oz will be tough with Rog & Nole out for blood, RG well, Wimby nope, USO most likely.

4) Second serves for Muzz and Elf - they seriously need new ones

5) Health for Tsonga - the rest will take care of itself

6) HC Slam for Rafa - Entry into GOAT discussion, though another Channel Slam would do just as well. I think Oz is the best bet of the two for him, given timing and surface. But it's gonna be tough

7) Resurrection of the oldies - Rusty, Roddick, Nalby, and Safin. A few victories over the top 4 if not a slam

8) A 1hbh in the WTA - Henin unretires? Or, a new prodigee is born.

9) No fashion statements in Wimby - Enuff already

10) Serena, Venus and Sharapova in good form at the same time - That's pushing it.

Posted by Samantha Elin 12/18/2008 at 06:12 PM

I honestly think it would be cool if JJ could win a slam. Do I think it will happen? No.

Posted by greenhopper 12/18/2008 at 06:15 PM

ptenisnet -- what do they sell in that cafe ? burnt toast ?

Pspace, your no. 6.. who ARE you ?

Posted by rafadoc 12/18/2008 at 06:15 PM

Great topic Jackie...I love to dream....in no particular order:

Ana Repeat FO win
Caroline c-woz, ankle boots, Wozniaki to win a slam
Rafa 5th FO and 2nd Wimbledon (greedy, no?:)
Rafa to win a HC slam (greedier yet, no?)
Marat to win a MS title -PLEASE-not asking for a GS, just a little ol' Master"s Shield
World Peace

Queen G: *bows* You remained true to your words and didn't forget the pact (I mean your #3)! :)

Posted by ptenisnet 12/18/2008 at 06:17 PM

Bagels with cheese?

Posted by ptenisnet 12/18/2008 at 06:19 PM

Pspace
You have sub clauses in no 6 that seem to contradict no. 1

Posted by Jackie 12/18/2008 at 06:20 PM

Now, now. No knifefights in the DC. ;)

Posted by gauloises 12/18/2008 at 06:21 PM

Arun - the pact is sacred.

Posted by C Note 12/18/2008 at 06:22 PM

Samantha -- You don't think she'll win one this year? I think she's definitely the favorite for AO. Everyone else is doinking around this off-season and she's all acting serious and working out and stuff. It weirds me out.

Posted by Nancy 12/18/2008 at 06:22 PM

Pspace - did you just include Nalby or that's just another one of my drunken moments?

One wish list is not enough for me. I have special Nalby list and another one for the other lost causes. I couldn't be less greedy.

Posted by Pspace 12/18/2008 at 06:26 PM

greenhopper, hehe, the motivation is simple. There cannot be a GOAT candidate in an era, unless there's another in the mix. Laver-Rosewall, Borg-Mac-Connors-Lendl, Sampras-Agassi, Fed-Nadal (to be determined). I think Rog has about 2 good years left, and Rafa has finally made a statement outside clay. Good top 4, so none of that weak-era nonsense. So, hopefully, they will duke it out for bragging rights.

Posted by rafadoc 12/18/2008 at 06:28 PM

Good point Pspace.

Posted by greenhopper 12/18/2008 at 06:28 PM

flavored cream cheese? that could work.

Posted by Pspace 12/18/2008 at 06:28 PM

Nancy, of course. I really love those four guys. Though it's kinda pointless rooting for a guy who isn't consistent. So, sure I'd root for him in most matches, but I wouldn't pin my two-week enjoyment on him :).

Posted by greenhopper 12/18/2008 at 06:29 PM

Pffft. You just need more grounds for an argument, Pspace. :)

Posted by Pspace 12/18/2008 at 06:31 PM

ptenis, that's called hoping against hope.

Posted by Ruth 12/18/2008 at 06:32 PM

And now for the completely outrageous...

--Rafa and Roger at #1 for six months each, BUT...
--Four completely different Slam winners, preferably Roddick, Murray, Tsonga, Nalbandian (I was going to limit my choices to non-Slam winners, but I like Andy too much to omit him)
--Venus and Sveta to win two Slams each

Posted by Pspace 12/18/2008 at 06:34 PM

greenhopper, whaddaya mean?

Posted by greenhopper 12/18/2008 at 06:36 PM

Rafa getting a HC slam would mean more confusion in the GOAT puzzle -- more arguments -- WAR -- Pspace is happy.

Just teasin' ya.

Posted by Vanessa 12/18/2008 at 06:37 PM

My wish list:
1. Rafa to win AO & USO
2. Rafa to keep his number one ranking
3. Rafa to stay healthy throughout 2009
4. Andy M to win consistently on all surfaces and win Wimbledon
5. Vanessa to FINALLY go to Wimbledon (in which case I would change my number 4 wish to Rafa beating Andy M in the Wimby final)

Posted by rafadoc 12/18/2008 at 06:38 PM

One more wish...ATP and tennis tourney PR to show pictures of the players with their mouths closed...or at least not looking like insane murderers:

http://tinyurl.com/3kettw

James is the only one that looks sane.

Posted by Samantha Elin 12/18/2008 at 06:40 PM

No, C-note, I don't think she will ever win one, if you look at her record against players like Serena, Ana and Sharapova, it's not very good. I think that when Serena, Ana and Sharapova are at their best, they are simply better players than JJ. I also don't believe her game translate into a slam winner, the right ingredient aren't there such as a good, powerful serve.

Posted by AmyLu 12/18/2008 at 06:40 PM

Another great topic! My wish list for 2009:

1. Rafa and Nole to meet in the final of the USO since JJ and I will be in attendance
2. Argentina to win Davis Cup
3. Dinara to win a slam
4. Crazy Elf to break into the top 5
5. Gulbis to win a title
6. Rafa to repeat his Channel Slam
7. Ferrer to regain his 2007 form
8. Wozniaki to make the year-end event in Doha

Posted by rafadoc 12/18/2008 at 06:40 PM

...okay...Kolya only looks half insane...but you get my drift.

Posted by babypanda 12/18/2008 at 06:41 PM

C Note, you should know better...Ana or Masha in quorters will end her dreams.

Posted by ptenisnet 12/18/2008 at 06:42 PM

ptenis, that's called hoping against hope.

Well, if anyone can make it happen. Actually 11 and 12 are hoping against hope.

Posted by rafadoc 12/18/2008 at 06:42 PM

Samantha/C Note-butting in here-I think JJ has a great shot at AO-she has been working her @$$ off and certainly hears the buzz about being number 1 but slamless-motivation is key.

Posted by ptenisnet 12/18/2008 at 06:43 PM

What kind of flavouring though, GH ?

Posted by aussiemarg{rafa nadal,no 1 player,long may he reign} 12/18/2008 at 06:44 PM

Madame President has finally completed her list, mind you,THE LIST,that bears any meaning,as follows.,

Okay honestly, here's my wishlist:

1. Mario, JWT and Sania remain healthy.
2. Kei continues to do well.
3. Rafa reaches a HC final. Winning would be great.
4. JJ/Dinara/both get a slam.
5. Fed gets a slam and ties Sampras. And Sampras is there to watch it.
6. Paes & whoever wins a slam.
7. Venus defends wimbles.
8. Nestor/Zimo stay at the top.
9. Ernie manages to do well outside the majors as well. And gets a kinder draw.
10. Ferru snaps out his headcase-y-ness.

My wish is for Rafa to win his 5th title in Paris, wearing a sleeveless shirt, that is not pink. *le sigh*
