mick, not only would Serena have to win 2 sets in that heat after losing a set over 50 minutes, she doesn't have a day off. The SF is the next afternoon. Playing in that heat is draining.
Closing that roof gave Serena a MUCH better chance of getting to the final, and winning this title.
How about Nadal? He has to play 5 hours a full day after Federer goes 3 sets.
Nothing is fair at this AO.

"Atleast when Roger used to dominate at will he wouldn't dabble into doubles at slams and Davis Cup (left scraps like that for Andy Roddick and others to get what they could). So it wasn't like he was totally stealing food of off ppl's tables. Oh well, atleast Dani/Ai don't seem too crushed. Anyone know if they've won slams together before?"
Unbelievable...
It would be great if all the top players played doubles. The fact that you think they shouldn't goes to show your love is not for the sport. Everytime the sisters play, hate them or love them people watch. Lol at Venus and Serena stealing food out of peoples mouths. These other ladies aren't exactly starving, although Dani could use a cheeseburger or two.

I'm going to borrow the quote below from Matt Zemek on the CC, pt 2 thread and make it my last comment on this mildly ridiculous discussion of how and why the Serena-Sveta match evolved:
"One of the great lessons of sports is that if you get a lucky break or get shafted by a fluke occurrence, you need to be good enough to have earned enough leverage to benefit from your break or withstand an opponent's break." (Zemek)
I have always thought that, in their Tennis 101 classes, players must have had lessons on how to handle delays (legitimate and otherwise) in their matches. If I were a tennis teacher, thahose lessons would be an integral part of my program. If players don't learn those lessons or employ what they've learned, they have no one but themselves to blame.
As a fan of Sveta (she's one of my WTA "five faves"),I compliment her on showing, based her performance for about 40 minutes after the roof closing delay, that she had learned her lessons. Too bad that some of her other "fans" insist on using her so-called disadvantage or Serena's so-called advantage as an excuse for her later collapse.
I hope that, next time, Sveta will make better use of the very real up-a-set-and-a break advantage that she had in the match.

"Why aren't the commentators going on about the lack of depth in women's tennis? Serena's "slimmed down"?! It embarressing! She waddles in from the fat farm and is in the final! The WTA should really be concerned. Half of the other "contenders" are injured. And they only play best-of-three and get the same money for it. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Safina win!! And they should play best-of-5 to deserve the same money. You don't see women running a shorter marathon, or only 90 meter races... Doesn't make sense."
Please...
Safina isn't any better. She wasn't too slim her self till this year. They are women afterall. Most women struggle with weight. I don't care who you are. It isn't Serena's problem she can still kick their ass waddle and all.

"You can salivate over Serena's mental toughness all you want. To me she is mentally tough because the value of the next Slam win for her is less significant. She is not chasing any records, unlike Federer. 9 or 10 - does it really matter for her? "
Are you people serious?

Minor correction: There's no pt 2 CC for Day 12. Matt's comment that I quoted appears at 9:39 am on the Day 12 CC thread(currently the only one).

Greatness is greatness. It always comes through. No matter how people try to denigrate and hypothesize it away. Greatness always and will always triumph. Not even hate can stop it - it is an unstoppable force.

Who talks about stopping the greatness? It gets all the possible help (I’m talking strictly this tournament). And I don’t hate Serena at all – just do not care for her. Ask Rosangel about Federer. This is precisely my feelings about Serena.

yeah she is good and she is definitely mentally strong. But she is far from winning all the majors and hasn't won the french in a long time. Half of her aura comes from the media writing exaggerations about her.

Interesting thought, Stupid.
I rarely see media praising Serena, only when she wins. If she loses, then it's more like "her game is in decline", "she's unfit", etc. You might want to check some of the articles written after she lost to Lena D. in Sydney.
Anyway, nice piece. The intimidation factor goes a long way for Serena, but not just because of her "dark tresses," her figure or her "doo rag." As you stated, she is unpredictable in every way, from her form to her schedule. She simply marches to her own drum or "waddles" as those who think she's a blubbering big butt would put it. Whatever the case, she wins. However little she plays, she wins big matches. However fat, out of shape, and arrogant, she wins.
Of course I am being sarcastic. I in no way think Serena is out of shape or fat, but I think in general there is a certain perception of what a female, even a female athlete should look like...and needless to say, Serena doesn't fit the bill with her "doo-rag" and all.
::rolls eyes::
Just keep winning, Rena.

I can totally understand what the women are thinking when they look across the net and see Serena. I walked pass Serena last summer and noticed that she is really "LARGER THAN LIFE". She seems much taller than 5'8" or 5'9" with the physique of a halfback (a true female halfback, that is). I'm a man and I would shake in my tennis shoes if I looked up and saw SERENA across the net. Good luck to Safina, I hope she doesn't just crumble looking across the net.
