Barcelona Your Call, 4.25 04/25/2009 - 7:30 AM

Gonzo

Good afternoon all (and good morning if you're ion the other side of the Atlantic). The semifinals in Barcelona are beginning shortly, as we near the end of an almost Murray free tennis-viewing week here in the UK. So far there have only been a couple of mentions of the Scot by TV commentators, and only one of those could be said to have overestimated his achievements to date. I don't have a thing against Andy Murray, you understand - in fact I'm quite a fan - but....well, others in here in the UK will know what it's like. There are only eight weeks between now and the start of Wimbledon, and if he's not mentioned often enough some of us might forget who he is. Never fear - the Rome draw should be out very soon. Nalbandian, Monfils, Roddick and Ancic are all out, but Mr Murray is definitely expected.

Returning to (red) earth for a moment, today's first Barcelona semifinal features Nikolay Davydenko and Rafael Nadal. Their head-to-head stands 3-2 in favour of the world number one, including both meetings so far on clay. However, Kolya managed to take a set from Rafa when the two met in Rome two years ago, in one of the best three-set claycourt matches of the year.

The second semifinal features David Ferrer (looking to repeat his appearance in the final last year) and Fernando Gonzalez. Gonzalez leads their head-to-head 4-2, including having taken both of their matches on clay; however, it's almost three years since they played each other. The Spaniard would be the local favourite in any event, but the Chilean didn't win himself many fans in the crowd yesterday with his repeated questioning of line calls during his match against Fernando Verdasco. Ah well - how many times do we have a reason to feature a picture of Gonzo viewed from this angle in TennisWorld?

As always, enjoy today's tennis.

- Rosangel Valenti

Hey mina. players look crisp out there. so does Mo Lay in a natty suit. sigh. would love to visit barcelona some day.

comms talking about his streak being in the 5th year with him only being 22. If anyone missed it, go to tennis.com and check out rafa's numbers on clay. it will blow your mind.

Tfactor: any luck with channelsurfing.net?

Posted by Tfactor 04/25/2009 at 07:43 AM

Sorry for double post (my computer is acting up)
The video quality is good on the link I provided. Channelsurfing has been freezing up for me

Mo is killing it with the sunnies :)

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature) 04/25/2009 at 07:44 AM

Ros. not to nitpick but the boys are playing a semi today, not a quarter...

I like Murray alot but can't imagine listening to all murray all the time when he hasn't won a major yet..

Posted by NDMS 04/25/2009 at 07:44 AM

I skipped the Gonzalez-Verdasco match. Is Gonzo mock-disputing a call in that picture? Or mooning somebody with his shorts on?

I just saw the Rome draw. The first person I feel bad for is Seppi. The guy gets Federer in the 2nd round of MC and in Rome he gets Nadal. Can't the Italian get a break?

I'm really looking forward to Kolya playing Rafa, not Rafa playing Kolya. There's a difference.

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature) 04/25/2009 at 07:47 AM

NDMS: Both! He's pissed at the linesman, or the ump, he might have been doing that to the ump believe it or not. jason and robbie couldn't believe he didn't get a conduct warning. but he did have a big smile on his face.

Davy starting strong but as comms say, he will have to keep this up for 2 l/2 or 3 hours.

Posted by Jacko (Private Detective) FED CUPness!!! 04/25/2009 at 07:57 AM

Lisicki is now down 4-3 to Zheng......
and cornet is up 3-1 to Dani

Posted by Jai 04/25/2009 at 07:58 AM

"The first person I feel bad for is Seppi. The guy gets Federer in the 2nd round of MC and in Rome he gets Nadal. Can't the Italian get a break?"

NDMS: Seppi has to get past Sam Querrey first, which could be tricky. Querrey showed himself to be a more than competent clay-court player last year, even taking a set off Rafa in their Davis Cup match. And the fast Rome surface could suit him.

Hey everyone.

"Well, others in here in the UK will know what it's like."

No opportunity for solidarity moaning about Murray hype can be missed by me. ;-)

I wouldn't mind if Kolya pulled off the win...can't not root for my boy though.

Thanks Annie. You remember who the umpire is?

Rafa hasn't found his range yet. Kolya's first serve is clicking winning both his games at 40-15. Rafa had to save 2 BPs on his service game.

2-1 for Kolya.

Posted by z-nadal 04/25/2009 at 08:03 AM

any streams?

Posted by Jacko (Private Detective) FED CUPness!!! 04/25/2009 at 08:06 AM

JJ is down 3-0 in the second

Posted by Samantha Elin 04/25/2009 at 08:07 AM

Hej, I picked the Czech Republic to win against the US and this is the first time in a long time that Russia has put together a team that could actually lose early. Surprise Demmy didn't play as she has alway been very dedicated.Go Caro, Scandinavia's #1 and world's#11!

Posted by Aussiemarg{Madame President in Comma Rehab in 2009} 04/25/2009 at 08:08 AM

rafa will you cut out the slice???

also you balls are too short at present?

gee think??

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature) 04/25/2009 at 08:09 AM

mina: mom's there though according to jason, so i was just thinking..but i think you're safe :)

Posted by ptenisnet 04/25/2009 at 08:09 AM

nice kolya. that was probably your opportunity to break in the first set.

Posted by Jacko (Private Detective) FED CUPness!!! 04/25/2009 at 08:10 AM

Lisicki is serving for the match 5-4!!!!!!!!!LOL

JJ gets on the scoreboard in the second set. . . . . looks kinda out of it honestly. . . . . .. mind is sumwhere else.....

Posted by NDMS 04/25/2009 at 08:11 AM

Kolya created another BP opportunity at 30-40 with a FH dtl. Rafa saved it with a T serve that Kolya's FH barely got a racquet on. 2-2!

Posted by mina (Rafa FTW) 04/25/2009 at 08:11 AM

Annie, didnt see his ma. hmmm Carlos is looking quite, ahem, fine today. these Spanish men are driving me insane. oh wait. too late for that

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature) 04/25/2009 at 08:14 AM

oh Mo, too divine.

Posted by NDMS 04/25/2009 at 08:15 AM

Give Kolya enough rope and he'll hang himself with the aggressive go-for-the-line groundies.

He gets broken at 30-40 with a long FH.

Posted by Backhand blaster 04/25/2009 at 08:16 AM

Rafa gets a break...seems like Davydenko is one of Rafa' toughest clay court opponents.

Posted by Jacko (Private Detective) FED CUPness!!! 04/25/2009 at 08:16 AM

Sam......Czech-US seems a pretty obvious result am i rite??!!!LOL
i htink Russia will be dropping Chaka Khan tomoro and put in petrova. . . if it comes to a deciding doubles. . . . i think it will be Sveta-Petrova. . . .as they're the best doubles players on the team......

and Lisicki wins 6-4 in the third to Zheng!!!!!!!!!LOL
Dani has come back from 3-0 down to cornet to level at 3 all in the first set.....
Sveta is up 4-1 in the first
JJ has broken back.. ...seems to hav her game back 3-2 Martinez Sanchez
and Kvitova is a break up 4-3 to mattek. . . .

Posted by rafa4ever 04/25/2009 at 08:16 AM

Good morning, TW!
Waking up 5am in the morning for Rafa/Koyla is all worth it. Koyla has a bunch of UFE to give Rafa the first break.
Vamos Rafa!

channelsurfing.net has a few streams...

Posted by Tfactor 04/25/2009 at 08:17 AM

Wow Davy has hit all first serves in three games while Rafa is having a hard time finding that first serve

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature) 04/25/2009 at 08:17 AM

Davy's already being outplayed. ah well.

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature) 04/25/2009 at 08:18 AM

mina: word on the spanish men. it.is.insane.

Posted by Aussiemarg{Madame President in Comma Rehab in 2009} 04/25/2009 at 08:19 AM

Better service game from Nadal

Pls give up the slice for a while,he is punishing you with short balls on the court

Posted by Jacko (Private Detective) FED CUPness!!! 04/25/2009 at 08:20 AM

Point of the Day by JJ there......just phenomenal!!!!!LOL

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature) 04/25/2009 at 08:22 AM

it is nice to see the spectators all duded up. most of the men are wearing jackets and ties. that's a real throwback. like it.

Posted by NDMS 04/25/2009 at 08:22 AM

Both held at love.

As expected, Kolya doesn't back down going for his shots. He hit 2 dtl FH winners in his game off short balls.

4-3 for Rafa.

Posted by Backhand blaster 04/25/2009 at 08:22 AM

Seems Davydenko is better able than most to attack Rafa's high bouncing balls, even on clay. Still semi-shocked thinking back on his 2008 Miami Final romp over Rafa. He knows how to hurt Rafa.

Posted by Tfactor 04/25/2009 at 08:22 AM

The draw for Rome is out. Andy M on Rafa's half

Posted by Jacko (Private Detective) FED CUPness!!! 04/25/2009 at 08:24 AM

and another amazing point from JJ yet again..........running back for a lob. . . and hitting an almost perfect Backhand DTL to finish with an easy drop volley. . . . . . .amazing!!!LOL

Kvitova takes the first set 6-3
Sveta has breadsticked Schiavone
4 all i nthe first cornet-Dani (scoreboard is acting up so cud be wrong)

Posted by factor 04/25/2009 at 08:26 AM

tfactor-- wuestions is ther any pattern on the draw selection? why is murray almost always on rafa's half this year?

Posted by factor 04/25/2009 at 08:26 AM

AM- how is rafa playing? oh nervous breakdown here hahaha

Posted by jbradhunter 04/25/2009 at 08:27 AM

Kvitova has a surprising game- she can just hit winners at will- Betthany is fast too

Davy is playing well- good to see him back

Posted by Backhand blaster 04/25/2009 at 08:28 AM

factor...Rafa is playing well, up a break 5-3...controlling a tough playing Davydendo...

Posted by Tfactor 04/25/2009 at 08:28 AM

Well, I don't have the answer really, lol
It does seem to happen quite a bit, no? :)

Posted by mina (Rafa FTW) 04/25/2009 at 08:29 AM

i think the wind is kinda messing with kolya's head, just a touch.

Posted by Aussiemarg{Madame President in Comma Rehab in 2009} 04/25/2009 at 08:29 AM

Factor Rafa in the last 2 service games has found his rythm more and touch

Getting more 1st serves in.

Sometimes I feel he plays the slice too often

Posted by Jacko (Private Detective) FED CUPness!!! 04/25/2009 at 08:29 AM

jbrad......yes Kvitova makes up for her winner with a lot of errors though!!!LOL....but mattek is hitting more errors than her!!!LOL

Martinez Sanchez has the nicest dropshot returns!!!LOL

Posted by NDMS 04/25/2009 at 08:29 AM

At Rafa's last hold, Kolya netted an I/O FH off a slice. Kolya knew it was a cheap UFE.

And he's practically giving away 3 SPs on his serve from UFEs from long BH and FH.

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature) 04/25/2009 at 08:29 AM

factor: i think he's playing his usual fine brand of tennis. AM thinks he's overusing his bh slice. i always think he uses that shot too much.

I would like to know how the draws are constructed if anyone feels like explaining it.

Posted by jbradhunter 04/25/2009 at 08:30 AM

I watched the the rerun on TChannel of the 05 Rome Final- little Rafa vs Coria-- I had forgotten what a fantastic clay court player Coria was-- funny how much Rafa's game has changed since then-- he really puts his body behind the backhand now and his forehand preparation is much simpler now

Posted by Backhand blaster 04/25/2009 at 08:30 AM

Windy day in Barcelona...Davydenko is starting to show lot's of negative body language set/break point for Rafa...

Posted by Aussiemarg{Madame President in Comma Rehab in 2009} 04/25/2009 at 08:30 AM

Well are my eyes playing tricks on me

Brad is here at TW?

Posted by imjimmy 04/25/2009 at 08:30 AM

Davy is loosing it: He just needs to calm down a little an be selective on when to go for broke. He's trying to play like a Verdasco, which is clearly not his game. Rafa, having a pretty easy time out there. 6-3 first set Nadal!

Posted by Backhand blaster 04/25/2009 at 08:31 AM

Looked dicey in the first part of set for Rafa...but turned routine for him...6-3 Nadal.

Posted by jbradhunter 04/25/2009 at 08:32 AM

Good morning (here in the US) Aussiemarg!!!!

I am on 2 tennis teams, a USTA team and a city league team- lol-- and with work and stuff, I barely have time for tennis on TV :(

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature) 04/25/2009 at 08:33 AM

jbrad: a lot of us have seen that match recently. Coria was really good.

Posted by jbradhunter 04/25/2009 at 08:33 AM

Jacko- if Kvitova got herself into really great shape she could prolly cut down on a lot of those errors

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature) 04/25/2009 at 08:34 AM

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature) 04/25/2009 at 08:38 AM

jbrad. yup. that's a word.

i think gonzo/ferru will be the match of the day. vamos ferru!

Posted by imjimmy 04/25/2009 at 08:39 AM

I think there is precisely one week before Madrid and French Open. Still hoping that Rafa, comes to his senses and skips that tournament.
Meanwhile very poor quality tennis by Davydenko. This is really disappointing. 1-0 Rafa on serve.

What's wrong with the slice? It's a high percentage shot, conserves energy and is not too defensive. Also it will be extremely effective in Wimbledon. Anyway, I don't think Rafa will play so much slice against a top quality opponent: say Andy Murray.

Posted by jbradhunter 04/25/2009 at 08:39 AM

has Rafa confirmed his Madrid participation?

Posted by Jacko (Private Detective) FED CUPness!!! 04/25/2009 at 08:39 AM

2 all Kvitova-Mattek Second set
2-0 Schiavone in the second gainst Sveta!!!!!LOL

Posted by rafa4ever 04/25/2009 at 08:42 AM

Nice FH DTL by Rafa. I miss that shot.

Posted by NDMS 04/25/2009 at 08:42 AM

Kolya looks like he's dialing it back a little.

He's not trying to finish the points with the groundies but with an extra play at the net.

Still, Rafa has him at 40-40.

Posted by Rosangel 04/25/2009 at 08:43 AM

What - no-one frazzling over the possibility of a Fed 2nd round match with Karlovic in Rome?
