Music Festival

By Jackie Roe, TW Social Director

Happy Friday, TWibe! It's a good thing you stopped by this week because we're doing something extra special in this week's Deuce Club (as previewed by Pete in today's YC). Read on!

The summer months are marked by outdoor activities - the most enjoyable of which are concerts and music festivals (in my opinion, anyway). Chicago may as well be the mecca for these types of events. The Ravinia Festival in Highland Park is the oldest music festival in the States and one of the most world-class, and just last night, Billy Joel and Elton John performed at Wrigley Field. See? It's not just the pizza that keeps me here.

But I digress.

It's in this spirit that Pete and I have decided to host our very first ... TW Music Festival!

Here's how this will work. We'd like for everyone to share their favorite music video on YouTube.

Some guidelines:

1) You can only pick one video! That'll make this activity both fun and a little bit of a challenge. (It's inevitable that as the night progresses, y'all will think of other clips you'd like to share, and that's fine. But let's try to keep it to one per person, to start off.)

2) You can choose an actual music video or a live/studio performance. Post both the link as well as a brief description of the clip.

3) Please use TinyURL so our pages don't become a mess!

Everyone good?

Let's begin with Pete's favorite, then mine. We both went the live performance route, which fits in well with the summer music festival theme (though mine takes place in the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge - not quite an outdoor atmosphere, huh).

Here's Pete's:

Gotta love the bayou, and there are a million different versions of this song, but I love Emmylou's best!

http://tinyurl.com/klj53z

And mine:

Not my favorite band or favorite song ... but one heckuva performance. The best part(s)? Lead singer Ryan Tedder hitting those high notes better than any soprano ever could AND reading the lyrics off of his phone!

http://tinyurl.com/mwcrrh

Now you. Remember those guidelines from earlier, and get ready to partake in some music madness!

[Programming note: In the coming weeks, I plan on hosting a few more "favorite YouTube videos" events. Different categories but same level of fun. Make sure to bookmark those videos you can't get enough of, so you're prepared!]

NP, you're not following directions, dear. :)

Woot! Jackie, you pwn girl!
Off to read!

*demands more Gould clips from NP*

Oh, fun, Jackie! *loves*

*off to find suitable video*

Posted by Emma (insertwittymantrahere) 07/17/2009 at 05:06 PM

Jackie, what an awesome idea! I flove your choice!
Now I just have to think of mine!

Posted by NP 07/17/2009 at 05:06 PM

Jackie, if you really want me to do something, the best way is to tell me to do something opposite.

jewell, don't think there's any more that I haven't posted yet. Will check.

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 05:06 PM

Aw, Emma. *blushes*

Posted by Master Ace 07/17/2009 at 05:06 PM

Will be very interested to see what TWibe will pick?

Jackie,
Good topic as TW has been slow this week and there is NO tennis on TV in the USA this weekend. Livestream is the way to go and see action this week.

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 05:07 PM

And remember to check out everyone's submissions!

Posted by NP 07/17/2009 at 05:08 PM

BTW, Jackie, YouTube URLs are short enough to fit in the comment box. U still want us to use TinyURL?

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 05:08 PM

Emma, we need to credit Pete for the idea. :) But I'm glad you're into this - and that you enjoyed my choice! Man, was it hard to pick just one.

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 05:09 PM

Good point, NP. That should be fine.

Jackie Thank goodness for you

I was being picked on? on the other post

Music good for the soul amen.

Posted by NP 07/17/2009 at 05:13 PM

Gotcha, Jackie.

Here's my pick. The music starts shortly after the 5:00 mark:

Posted by Emma (insertwittymantrahere) 07/17/2009 at 05:14 PM

Well in that case Jax, make sure to tell Pedro I think it was a genius choice.
I'm seriously struggling to pick just one song!

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 05:17 PM

Well, we're going with one per person for now. But you can certainly post others later ...

It's part of the fun, having to whittle down the choices to just one, no?

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 07/17/2009 at 05:17 PM

Miss Jackie

What happens if you cant post your fav song?

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 05:18 PM

What do you mean, aussiemarg? It's not on YouTube?

Posted by jewell - Campaign for Fedal Disarmament 07/17/2009 at 05:19 PM

My pick, and I'll happily apologise for my taste of lack of in advance...;-)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIaehhYLVZA&feature=related

Festival-appropriate. :) There's a bit of chat before the song starts, about a minute I think.

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 07/17/2009 at 05:19 PM

Miss Jackie No its not,I am away from home,I have my lap top at the moment

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 05:21 PM

Well, it's sort of a TW/YouTube Music Festival ... we'll be doing more with YouTube in the future, too.

Can you find a vid that at least features the song, aussiemarg? Or I can do it if you tell me the song?

Posted by NP 07/17/2009 at 05:23 PM

Pulp makes pulp fiction anti-pulpy by comparison.

you're my honey bunch - sugar plum ... pumpy-umpy-umpkin
you're my sweety pie !

i love the way she flawlessly says 'Snoogums-Boogums'

I still cant say it for cryin out loud mate

Miss Jackie I will just tell you the song ok

Stairway To Heaven ---- Led Zepplin.

Posted by Mr. X 07/17/2009 at 05:25 PM

Hi Jackie.
Now that's a topic. I will have to take this into serious consideration, and add the factor that my first choice would very probably be in Spanish, but i think there are several good options in English.
By the way, love your pick. If you ask me, better than the original. The guy reading the lyrics from his mobile makes it hilarious. "Hey, let's sing this, just because we can, but i have no idea of the lyrics, so i'll just do some karaoke from my mobile phone"

Posted by rafadoc 07/17/2009 at 05:25 PM

This is fun as usual. So many to choose from! Here is my pick for Friday night fun though:

Leytsie Hi,good to see you here, thanks for that

I saw Led Zepplin live

Robert Plant can take me to heaven anytime he likes lol!

He is the Sex Rock God of the Universe as far as I am concerned.

Posted by NP 07/17/2009 at 05:32 PM

Emma, but it's an awesome MV. Seriously, the closing music is pretty cool.

Posted by Emma (insertwittymantrahere) 07/17/2009 at 05:33 PM

Am, Stairway to Heaven was on my shortlist, excellent choice!
rafadoc, I flove that song, but I flove the vid more! Awesome!

Posted by rafadoc 07/17/2009 at 05:33 PM

Okay, I watched Pete's and Jackie's-both "favorites" now. Off to watch more.

(this may make me neurotic because I will have to watch every video which could be a titch time consuming-OCD much?-lol)...wine will help.

Miss Jackie Thanks for that.Sorry i have all my songs on my other computer back home.

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 05:33 PM

Mr.X, Spanish is just fine! We need to broaden our horizons, anyhow. :) And isn't the OneRepublic vid great? Love that they just learned it the night before and insisted on performing it anyway!

Lleytsie, just look up my full name. No spaces. You'll see me. :)

rafadoc, great choice! Hilarious vid.

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 05:35 PM

rafadoc, that's the point! We should *all* be checking out everyone else's choices!

LOL, Lleytsie. Cosmic connection.

G'night, jewell! I hope I'm still here when you return. :(

Ray Davies is a better lyricist than Paul & John--wittier, and more biting--but the Fab Two were better tunesmiths.

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 05:37 PM

Lleytsie, scroll up. By-line. :)

Posted by Mr. X 07/17/2009 at 05:38 PM

Well, personally i'm checking other's choices. This is gonna be some night. AM's is my favourite so far.
So Spanish is right? Then i have absolutely nothing to consider. It's a no-contest. Back in a while after i find it.

Posted by rafadoc 07/17/2009 at 05:41 PM

Thanks Jackie. :)

Jewell: That Pulp vid was really cool (I am going to run out of adjectives...lol)

Emma: Me too...the video makes it!

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 05:41 PM

Mr.X, Spanish is more than all right. :)

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 05:42 PM

Y'know, I wonder if I should do a separate DC for music videos. Like, actual music videos ...

Or we'll just wait and see how the evening progresses. 'Cause I have plenty to share. :)

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 07/17/2009 at 05:43 PM

Well I was going to pick my other all time fav song from Leonard Cohen who I saw live again this year

He is brillant, yes still incredible at age 74.

Posted by Mr. X 07/17/2009 at 05:45 PM

Well, here it goes, then. I would have liked to find a clip from a live concert, but there wasnt a good one i could find, so i go with the original videoclip.
The first song i heard in a live concert, 1999. I dont think i'll ever forget that night.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMHcqBDUz9o&feature=related

Posted by Ruth 07/17/2009 at 05:46 PM

Well, I'll beat Cayman Karen to it with the reggae touch. The song I'm posting has always been a favorite of mine; and coincidentallly, it was the first song on a mix of 33 songs put together by a fellow commenter on my old tennis forum (NYT). He solicited suggestions from all the other commenters and compiled the mix which remains one of my favorite CD's. (My suggestion/contribution was Cassandra Wilson's Time After Time; I was listening to her a lot at the time.)

Anyway, here it is. Eat your heart out, Karen! LOL

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8onbDZmAwhE

I'm heading to Jamaica at 7:30 am tomorrow for a mini-family reunion, and I'm definitely taking my NYT Tennis form CD for my airplane and beach and poolside listening.

Posted by rafadoc 07/17/2009 at 05:46 PM

Awwwww. That cuppycake song is totally adorable. AND a perfect contrast to the Stairway to Heaven video. Flove that one AM. Great choice.

Posted by Emma (insertwittymantrahere) 07/17/2009 at 05:46 PM

NP, I watched your vid. Really was a great choice, but TBH, the best bit about it was the shot @ 0:20. Unreal!!!
This was such a great topic, thanks a mill Jax and Pedro!

Great topic Jackie!!! I'm a YouTube addict, so I'll look forward to all your YouTube-related Deuce Club topics.

Here's mine. When I'm at a party or any social gathering, I'm reeeally picky when it comes to songs I will dance to. But this ALWAYS gets me out of my seat to get my groove on:

YMCA from the Village People!

http://tinyurl.com/3kxflq

This song, the Chicken Dance, the Macarena, the Electric Slide, I love dancing to all of these =). Just to prove I'm not a total dork, I also like to Crank That from Soulja Boy.

Aussiemarg - ROFL!

Posted by Mr. X 07/17/2009 at 05:56 PM

AM and Emma,
That song catapulted the group into stardom here in Spain. The thing is, they havent been able to deliver a similar one after that, at least in my opinion. Many of their other songs sound too similar to me.
By the way, AM, that was some pick. Obviously, a safe bet:)

Posted by Whitney 07/17/2009 at 05:56 PM

Fun Fun Jackie!!

Ok so here's mine. Kings of Leon - King of the Rodeo from Lowlands 2007. Partly because lead singer Caleb gets mad at his brother Jared for messing up the bass line at the beginning of the song. haha check out his dirty look. Plus this performance is great - actually all their live performances are great.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9YQjCQq9Ek

And umm I'll be back later because I have another. :)
