Music Festival

By Jackie Roe, TW Social Director

Happy Friday, TWibe! It's a good thing you stopped by this week because we're doing something extra special in this week's Deuce Club (as previewed by Pete in today's YC). Read on!

The summer months are marked by outdoor activities - the most enjoyable of which are concerts and music festivals (in my opinion, anyway). Chicago may as well be the mecca for these types of events. The Ravinia Festival in Highland Park is the oldest music festival in the States and one of the most world-class, and just last night, Billy Joel and Elton John performed at Wrigley Field. See? It's not just the pizza that keeps me here.

But I digress.

It's in this spirit that Pete and I have decided to host our very first ... TW Music Festival!

Here's how this will work. We'd like for everyone to share their favorite music video on YouTube.

Some guidelines:

1) You can only pick one video! That'll make this activity both fun and a little bit of a challenge. (It's inevitable that as the night progresses, y'all will think of other clips you'd like to share, and that's fine. But let's try to keep it to one per person, to start off.)

2) You can choose an actual music video or a live/studio performance. Post both the link as well as a brief description of the clip.

3) Please use TinyURL so our pages don't become a mess!

Everyone good?

Let's begin with Pete's favorite, then mine. We both went the live performance route, which fits in well with the summer music festival theme (though mine takes place in the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge - not quite an outdoor atmosphere, huh).

Here's Pete's:

Gotta love the bayou, and there are a million different versions of this song, but I love Emmylou's best!

http://tinyurl.com/klj53z

And mine:

Not my favorite band or favorite song ... but one heckuva performance. The best part(s)? Lead singer Ryan Tedder hitting those high notes better than any soprano ever could AND reading the lyrics off of his phone!

http://tinyurl.com/mwcrrh

Now you. Remember those guidelines from earlier, and get ready to partake in some music madness!

[Programming note: In the coming weeks, I plan on hosting a few more "favorite YouTube videos" events. Different categories but same level of fun. Make sure to bookmark those videos you can't get enough of, so you're prepared!]

Evanescence, particularly their lead chick, has gotta be one of the most annoying bands to emerge this decade. We get the goth shtick. You don't have to sound like you're just recovering from the orgasm of your life. Seriously.

Posted by NP 07/17/2009 at 06:30 PM

gh, if this is any consolation, I do like the Lion King #s.

Posted by Lleytsie (Sabbath) 07/17/2009 at 06:30 PM

FOR my mates, who are Metal-Heads ...

the energy in the video by Ozzy is quite amazing - raw energy, i think he really is high

'Poets of the Fall' ?

Posted by Mr. X 07/17/2009 at 06:31 PM

greenhopper,
That first choice of yours is a classic, in some way. That's also my "refuse to grow up" movie (last one of Disney i think i actually watched at the theatre). Although i always liked more the Scar song.
Lleytsie,
Oh, the memories that song brings. "WE WERE ON A BREAK!!!!!"

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 06:32 PM

Jacko, did you take that nap?

greenhopper, I remember watching the "My Immortal" vid about 398 times when it first came out.

Yeah, y'know, go ahead and post your other faves, guys! But for those just coming in - TRY to pick just one to start off, yeah? Just like everyone else had to do? To be fair and all.

A mermaid face towel?

Gee I cant wait to stay over at your place.

AM, I am jealous that you saw Zeppelin live! Bonham died when they were preparing for the tour that I could have seen :(

Jacko- I don't think I've ever seen a post of yours that didn't contain at least 1 "!"

It's alarming, to say the least!

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 06:39 PM

Um, how's about I make a rule that we can't dis other people's choices. Or is that too stifling?

Didn't think so.

Posted by NP 07/17/2009 at 06:39 PM

avid, Lil' Mermaid kicks Lion King's behind anytime, despite what Jacko sez.

Posted by Mr. X 07/17/2009 at 06:40 PM

OK, so a second pick is right? Well, i'll keep with the Latin side, seeing as i'm the only representative. I might like this song even more than the previous one, but i will always go with it second for the sentimental value of the other.
These guys are from Argentina, and in their prime, they would have shown Gasquet and the ITF what's a truly positive cocaine test.

Posted by NP 07/17/2009 at 06:41 PM

Eh, just remembered that Jacko and me were comparing Lil' Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, not Lion King. Still, Mermaid is tops.

Posted by Jacko (Private Detective) 07/17/2009 at 06:42 PM

only when i'm serious blue dog!!!!LOL
NP....love them both...but lion king has the better story....and was more successful globally...although i believe beauty and the beast was the most successful disney film.....and is by far the best....

*really goes*

Posted by avid sports fan aka "Sigh-Rena" 07/17/2009 at 06:45 PM

In fact just the calypso and Caribbean feel of under the sea is just wow! If I remember correctly the song won an academy award in 1989.

*now feels like watching little mermaid all over again*

I am sure Chanel have a lovely range of face towels, wahsers etc.

I will buy for your Wedding present ok.

Posted by Lleytsie (Sabbath) 07/17/2009 at 06:45 PM

how about one of the most beautiful songs by Andrea Bocelli - Sogno

its a love song, it makes my heart go 'pop'

like how seth says in the end - of super bad

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QI9euK4hvlg

Posted by gauloises (unrepentant FooP) 07/17/2009 at 06:46 PM

OK. I feel like I should be picking something more edgy. But in terms of influencing my, um, aesthetic and philosophy more than anything ...

http://tinyurl.com/nbqqjx

Also in memory of the best live band I've ever seen, btw.

And an antidote:

http://tinyurl.com/ywoelo

Posted by NP 07/17/2009 at 06:46 PM

Sorry, Jacko, but Mermaid's got better tunes. Lion King's storyline had some assistance from the Bard, and its OST, while good, is marred by the artificial weight of the "exotic."

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 06:46 PM

Lleytsie, if I'm picking Brit vids, I'd have to say "Slave" is tops. ;)

Love it, guys. Heading home now, but keep 'em coming!

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 07/17/2009 at 06:47 PM

I feel like I am in a Walt Disney production that keeps on and on

Posted by avid sports fan aka "Sigh-Rena" 07/17/2009 at 06:47 PM

"I will buy for your Wedding present ok."

AM - ok I will remind you :)

Posted by SilentP 07/17/2009 at 06:47 PM

Ok, so I've spent the last 40 minutes trawling through youtube trying to pick one song. It's so hard to choose one song, but I went with this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2c4L4CPfQY8 as whenever I hear it it makes me want to dance.

By the way I don't claim to have any taste in music!

Posted by Lleytsie (Sabbath) 07/17/2009 at 06:47 PM

haaaa, nice choice - 'slave'

i do have a thing for dark metal though - and love Ozzy !

Mr. X, nah. But Scar was the best character, I'll give you that.

Posted by Emma (insertwittymantrahere) 07/17/2009 at 06:51 PM

am laughin so loud NP - at the charlatans post

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 06:56 PM

Here's a music vid - and song - I'm quite fond of, with a lil' description (I meant to include this in the post but cut it at the last minute because I couldn't very well disobey my own guideline about ONE):

"How Does It Make You Feel" by Air

A really artsy-fartsy production by the French electronica/trip hop duo - perhaps excessively so - but undoubtedly mesmerizing. And all too fitting for one heckuva weird song. Keep an eye out for French model Audrey Marnay, too - she's exquisite.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BD2qnBozvE

Posted by Rosangel 07/17/2009 at 06:56 PM

OK - a couple from me:
Muse and Supermassive Black Hole
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tugqHunwDA&feature=channel_page

also Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKnxmkOAj88
I never could figure out why Buckley was so popular over here (UK and Europe) but not so much in his native land (It was similar for Springsteen in some of his leaner years, musically speaking). "Grace" is one of my all-time greatest albums.

Posted by NP 07/17/2009 at 06:56 PM

BTW that R.E.M. appearance was one of the best celeb cameos on the Muppets show.

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 06:56 PM

Gauloises, I flove Radiohead!

Chillaxing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fG8eQBSp9Ao

Personal, for anyone who is away from their hometown, this may just break your heart. The singer is the late Luke Kelly, whose voice is just so emotive, this song may be especially touching for Irish people, but I think everyone can relate:

TWibers, thanks so much for all your choices, I've been thoroughly enjoying them all, and feel like I've gotten to know some of you a little better through your picks :)

I like fake plastic trees ...

Posted by Grant 07/17/2009 at 07:10 PM

Emma - that's a great Massive Attack video.

Lleytsie - I don't know the genre all that well, so I would've gone with Opeth's 'Blackwater Park'. It's something of a classic.

Posted by Mr. X 07/17/2009 at 07:11 PM

Grant,
That would be quite a test for the young girl. I mean, maybe she wouldnt be that much of a fan of those "Scandinavian things"
Lleytsie,
That, or the other one, what was it? "One more time", or something like that? Ooohh boy.

Posted by Lleytsie (Sabbath) 07/17/2009 at 07:12 PM

grant

i also like 'funeral portrait'

Posted by Dunlop Maxply 07/17/2009 at 07:12 PM

Now that my oldest son is almost 14, we get to play "what's the greatest video of all time" on a semi-regular basis.

This always makes the top 10, if not the top 5, although good taste may well differ.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTugeLRZ6G

Considering pretty much all videos break down into either (1) the band playing the song, (ii) the band acting out some theme related to the song, or (iii) some story concept related to the song, without the band in it at all, I still think this holds up.

I mean, George Michael has a point, why not just hire the hottest supermodels you can find and be done with it?

Jeez, the bone structure on Christy Turlington's face is worth seeing for six minutes. Although, I must say, I think the chaps featured in the video are nowhere near as famous as the gals. Probably due to sexism in the modelling industry.

Although you'd think George Michael, of all people, would find some hot male models.

Posted by NP 07/17/2009 at 07:12 PM

Emma, that's actually one of my fave tracks by The Dubliners. (Yes, I know the song's by a non-member.) Good call.
