Music Festival

By Jackie Roe, TW Social Director

Happy Friday, TWibe! It's a good thing you stopped by this week because we're doing something extra special in this week's Deuce Club (as previewed by Pete in today's YC). Read on!

The summer months are marked by outdoor activities - the most enjoyable of which are concerts and music festivals (in my opinion, anyway). Chicago may as well be the mecca for these types of events. The Ravinia Festival in Highland Park is the oldest music festival in the States and one of the most world-class, and just last night, Billy Joel and Elton John performed at Wrigley Field. See? It's not just the pizza that keeps me here.

But I digress.

It's in this spirit that Pete and I have decided to host our very first ... TW Music Festival!

Here's how this will work. We'd like for everyone to share their favorite music video on YouTube.

Some guidelines:

1) You can only pick one video! That'll make this activity both fun and a little bit of a challenge. (It's inevitable that as the night progresses, y'all will think of other clips you'd like to share, and that's fine. But let's try to keep it to one per person, to start off.)

2) You can choose an actual music video or a live/studio performance. Post both the link as well as a brief description of the clip.

3) Please use TinyURL so our pages don't become a mess!

Everyone good?

Let's begin with Pete's favorite, then mine. We both went the live performance route, which fits in well with the summer music festival theme (though mine takes place in the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge - not quite an outdoor atmosphere, huh).

Here's Pete's:

Gotta love the bayou, and there are a million different versions of this song, but I love Emmylou's best!

http://tinyurl.com/klj53z

And mine:

Not my favorite band or favorite song ... but one heckuva performance. The best part(s)? Lead singer Ryan Tedder hitting those high notes better than any soprano ever could AND reading the lyrics off of his phone!

http://tinyurl.com/mwcrrh

Now you. Remember those guidelines from earlier, and get ready to partake in some music madness!

[Programming note: In the coming weeks, I plan on hosting a few more "favorite YouTube videos" events. Different categories but same level of fun. Make sure to bookmark those videos you can't get enough of, so you're prepared!]

Since Chris hooked up with that teary eyed Gwen person to me they are not as good.

Just to link Peg's "mainstream French pop" to my previous conversation with Lleytsie about Britney's first videos, there goes this one:

Ok, that linking thing was just a excuse to post this video. Now that's something.

Annie,
I love Smooth, great memories too!
My daughter keeps asking me why I'm listening to 'weird' songs and I'm thinking this could be the soundtrack of my life (of course that's a work in progress with many, many more to come, hopefully) ;-)

What about Jackson Browne WOW I love him

Posted by PT West 07/17/2009 at 08:13 PM

No offense, but I find Stairway to be Led Zep's most overrated song. I much prefer this track.

Posted by joe_can_bike 07/17/2009 at 08:14 PM

grant, why isn't Neko Case more popular? This Tornado Loves You is just a perfect song.

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 07/17/2009 at 08:15 PM

I know NP will love me for this one

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Wowser!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Mary Jane's Last Dance" I just go write off on that song.

Posted by Pspace 07/17/2009 at 08:15 PM

gh, that's one of the few New Age songs I can abide. Fun tidbit: The original singers of the aboriginal Taiwanese chants sued the producer and the record company for using the chants without their permission, and the suit was eventually settled out of court. You can imagine what the dough would've been given the song's worldwide popularity.

Posted by Whitney 07/17/2009 at 08:15 PM

For all the Coldplay fans out there - haha No really when I saw this I saved it, because first C. Martin probably got a stern talking to from his security. Notice their massive freak out.. and then when he gets back from running around in the crowd he's too tired to finish the song. The madness starts around 2:50 for those not wanting to listen to Fix You. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZORJRMM1XM

Posted by Grant 07/17/2009 at 08:15 PM

joe, I've long given up trying to figure out popularity.

Posted by PT West 07/17/2009 at 08:16 PM

Yeah, Jackson Browne is like the other Grateful Dead in the rock universe. I love "Running on Empty" as well as other songs he penned.

Posted by Tfactor 07/17/2009 at 08:18 PM

Ok another oldie fave of mine 'Superstition'
Stevie was so young...

NP Are you deaf I mentioned Tom Petty

Posted by Dunlop Maxply 07/17/2009 at 08:20 PM

I should be getting quite a bit more done than continuing this lazy summer afternoon, but I always liked the line "we're already wet and we're gonna go swimming."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUALb0sGdto

Plus, the video was clever, although I am sure there are many more deserving Phair songs.

Posted by beth 07/17/2009 at 08:21 PM

The Ocean is a great song
so many good Zeppelin tunes to choose from
one of my favorites is called Trampled Under Foot
and I love Rock and Roll - even though it now sadly is used in the background of Cadillac ads

sorry Whitney - I am not gonna bite - not gonna open up the Coldplay :)

Lleytsie - Jake's parody is sarcastic and insulting - but not necessarily R rated
at least not the version he sang for his mommy

Posted by Lynne (Rafalite) 07/17/2009 at 08:21 PM

Loved "Clocks" and "Smooth."

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature) 07/17/2009 at 08:22 PM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5H0wUo37RY

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: don't come around here no more

it's the alice in wonderland video. maybe one of the all-time great visuals. good song too.
i need to stop doing this. i've posted too many!

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 07/17/2009 at 08:23 PM

Also any jazz fans out there,I love jazz

One of my all time fav guys who just blows me away on the trumpet is

Chuck Mangione,he is a god

His "Feels So Good" cd is just pure heaven.

Posted by Grant 07/17/2009 at 08:23 PM

"although I am sure there are many more deserving Phair songs."

Her first album was just amazing.

Posted by Rosangel 07/17/2009 at 08:24 PM

I'm not convinced this is the greatest video ever - but another great rock song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-AYAv0IoWI

Guns 'n' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine

I do like other kinds of music too - honest.

Posted by lira vega 07/17/2009 at 08:26 PM

joe_can_bike.
yeah, I know that one, worth a link, no doubt ;)

Grant, I didn't know that guy was famous, never heard of him...
A friend sent me a link recently to some old Peaches vid with Feist getting umm, close and personal with a bike. Hilarious, with a touch of disturbing. Couldn't find it now

Posted by NP 07/17/2009 at 08:27 PM

AM, did ya? I'd link to "American Girl" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance," but I think most of us are familiar with 'em already.

Dunlop, sure there are, but I did like the song. I know the album got panned by the critics, but who f*cking cares when the tune is that infectious?

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature) 07/17/2009 at 08:27 PM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fY_yjPvHQwY

the enigma song reminded me of this: Korn's freak on a leash.

Posted by Whitney 07/17/2009 at 08:27 PM

PT West - nice one. Tangerine might be my favorite Led Zeppelin song. This week. It changes.

Annie Thanks for that

I love that song too

Petty is just awesome

Posted by beth 07/17/2009 at 08:28 PM

god - I love that song , Rosangel

The guitar is so awesome
I have a friend who actually "dated " Slash

and this song always makes me a bit teary
cause Missie chose it as her theme for video bio of her to be shown at her deb group presentation
It had all these cute little photos of her - my sweet child - from a baby to now
It was really perfect
She is my sweet child
Jake on the other hand ...

Posted by Peg 07/17/2009 at 08:28 PM

Mr. X, as long as we're seizing excuses...

http://tinyurl.com/lw8szu

(Les Enfoires - Rockollection. With Alizee rocking a furry purple halter, though the part I've replayed the most is David Halliday in leather pants. *g*)

Emma, thanks for "Town I Loved So Well." First heard it via the Three Irish Tenors - Ronan Tynan's rendition send chills down my spine.

Posted by Grant 07/17/2009 at 08:28 PM

"Grant, I didn't know that guy was famous, never heard of him..."

I don't think he'd describe himself as famous, but he is one of my favorite rappers. I think that vid was from when they were both living in Paris.

Posted by Mr. X 07/17/2009 at 08:29 PM

Rosangel,
Now you're talking. I was kind of surprised none of you English-speaking had mentioned the Guns 'n' Roses. Here's another one, for good measure:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtXN_EHPwSg&feature=related
I also had "nice boys dont play rock'n roll", but the video wasnt the best.

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 07/17/2009 at 08:29 PM

Whitney

Ok Tangerine

As a Zepp fan I am in music heaven

Posted by Rosangel 07/17/2009 at 08:30 PM

As for the thought expressed above by joe_can_bike that music can unite tennis fans....I was just as enthusiastic as Tim was about Amy Winehouse's "Back in Black" album:)

Posted by NP 07/17/2009 at 08:33 PM

Annie, "American Girl" is Petty and his gang's best song, but their best MV is "Mary Jane's Last Dance," hands down:

ever since I saw a video of him in a tophat
carrying a "dead" Kim Basinger to bed

not sure I remember the song - but the whole necrophilia theme gave me the creeps
I have never been able to look at him the same way

Posted by Mr. X 07/17/2009 at 08:34 PM

Appetite for Destruction was when Guns N' Rose actually played some solid rock 'n' roll. Use Your Illusion, OTOH, was simply laughable. Can't believe how many clueless groupies still fawn over over-the-top trope like "November Rain."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fX5USg8_1gA

Eric Clapton - Layla. I've seen him live a few times - all great stuff.

Posted by NP 07/17/2009 at 08:43 PM

AM, you like "Mary Jane" more than "American Girl" or "Runnin' Down a Dream"? Those last 2 are my faves.

Posted by VC 07/17/2009 at 08:43 PM

My daughter and son in law have left her with us as they are off to some party with Sasha and John Digweed---a DJ group from the UK. Believe me, I have no idea who they are but my daughter seemed to think that they may not be in the US again any time soon so we have this baby to care for over night.

My GOODNESS, you guys are just going nuts here! AND I LOVE IT!

Ohhh, so many fantastic choices. Love "Teardrop," especially (Emma, was that yours?).

And Whitney and I have more in common, yet again. So much Foo love. My fave, though, is "Walking After You" (was also on the X-Files movie soundtrack): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2oTmdZ-Q7g

Jackie, that's an uncharacteristic but still nice ballad by the Foo. Good call.

Posted by Rosangel 07/17/2009 at 09:04 PM

My favourite album by Earth, Wind & Fire was "IAm...". Included "After The Love Is Gone, Boogie Wonderland" and other great tracks - not a dud among them.

My favourite song by The Police - Bring On the Night (saw them live a couple of times as a teenager):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBYPxDGdi-w&feature=related

Somehow most things Sting did after The Police never measured up.

Someone above mentioned Pink Floyd - I also saw them during their "The Wall" tour, I think in 1982. Here's the video for "Another Brick in the Wall":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_bvT-DGcWw

I can't find one for "Shine on You Crazy Diamond", another favourite.

One of my new fave current bands is The Fray I love them

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 09:06 PM

Awww, I'm glad y'all are having so much fun. :)

It's sort of becoming a favorite song post more than favorite YouTube music vid - but I suppose it's only natural, given how linked the two are! (Hmmm, I wonder if anyone has a clip that they love, even whilst despising the song.)

Posted by Jackie 07/17/2009 at 09:06 PM

Hey, Diane. Never too soon to teach that grandbaby to enjoy good music. I'll be babysitting a lot with my grandson during the next week since the younger generation (my sons' generation) chose the dates for the Jamaica family reunion, and they happen to be same dates as the annual Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay!
