I love Pavarotti. Although there's something about his voice that isn't totally pleasant. I like the deeper darker voice timbre more. But I still think he is the best. |

Checking out these live performances remind me that I ought to see more.
Hardly ever go to concerts anymore.
Any legends still performing that I ought to see?
AM- I'm going to check on Cohen's schedule, I'd enjoy that for sure.
Would love to see the Eagles live as well. |

Morning All. Know I was supposed to do this yesterday or last night, bit late to the party. The clip that I am posting is not really one of my favourites, but the fellow is so talented. When Usain Bolt won the 100m at the Olympics he did a dance, the dance that he did was to a song made famous by this fellow, whose name is Movado. He is extremely talented but like most talented musicians his music usually has the feel of a tortured soul and he gets involved in all sorts of anti-social behaviour. That being said, this song really takes a look at his musical talent. I hope you all enjoy it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F165CvZfADs |

'morning sports (and music) fans!
So Tom Watson, dashing at 59, is the leader of the British Open. How cool is that? Would flove to see him take the whole thing. yeah, i think comparing golf to tennis really is nuts and cheese, bagels and pizza, apples and oranges. can't be done.
Angel: it was very hard to keep up with all the posts last night. i was more apt to check out a vid if i knew who it was beforehand. but there's some great stuff here. mr.x posted a spanish band La Flaca (is that the band or the song?) they were excellent. |

Can't believe I didn't submit this as my 1st (non-facetious) choice last nite. Here's Vladimir Horowitz's scorching rendition of Scriabin's Etude Op. 8, No. 12, from his famous 1965 return concert at Carnegie Hall:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ClDFmFmr0k
I'm not a big fan of neither artist, but this is easily one of the greatest performances of any piece of music ever. I've listened to all the other official recordings of this piece by Horowitz. I've also listened to dozens of other recordings of this hyper-Romantic warhorse by such luminaries as Richter, Barere, Berman, Cortot, Sofronitsky and the composer himself, and by today's talented Scriabin interpreters like Kissin and Sudbin. And I can say with 99% certainty that nobody--and I do mean NOBODY--matches Horowitz in this repertoire. Horowitz's 1962 studio performance comes fairly close, but even that one fails to bring the grand ending to such vertiginous heights as in this CH performance.
Simply one for the ages. Just ignore the pretentious description by the video poster and pay close attention to Horowtiz's fiery execution of the final octaves and chords. |

np, nice scriabin.
really none of the works in the classical realm that i want to share are youtubed. so i can't give you the music response i want to give.
horowitz playing danse macabre live exists but not on youtube. i am not crazy about the studio recoding. none of my favorite dvorak, beethoven, ravel, debussy, satie, shostakovich, or even reich on youtube. hmm....:(
so i give up. here's panda bear and animal collectice 1 more time . to me, beautiful, like a tennis ball in flight at night under the lights at armstrong stadium.

knownaim&, I actually can't stand Scriabin. That etude is one of the few Scriabin pieces that I really like, and even here I doubt I would've made an exception if not for Horowitz's performance.
My aversion to Horowitz isn't as strong, but he's still far from one of my faves. I just don't see what the big deal is. Yes, peerless in the late Russian Romantic repertoire, hair-raising Liszt here and there, pretty good Scarlatti and Mozart, and of course there are those crazy transcriptions of his, of which the danse macabre is one. But outside of those confines, I don't see much greatness on the level of, say, Schnabel, Cortot and Richter. The Horowitzian sound is unique, though, I'll grant that. |

NP, Sam.
Guess I should go off the track myself, keeping up with the world theme. Here's a song of praise and worship called "We Are Happy" by an Ugandan community called the Abayudaya:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVUXyaccyak
An interesting fact about the community: They have been very steadfast in their practice of Judaism despite decades of ostracism and persecution by local tribes and the Ugandan government, even though they aren't genetically or historically related to other ethnic Jews. Wiki has more background info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abayudaya
And here's their performance of Psalm 93:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YVEF3vq9lM
All these recordings are from their _Music From the Jewish People of Uganda_ CD, issued on the Smithsonian Folkways label. Wish YB had a video of the track for Psalm 150 also, 'cause it's the most exhilarating performance of a psalm I've heard. Go get the CD if you're interested. Not the most sophisticated music, but the sheer joy, devotion and humanity of the music are palpable. |

MSF, good call with "I Put a Spell on You," originally penned by, of course, the one and only Screamin' Jay Hawkins, the craziest MF in the history of rock 'n' roll. His "Constipation Blues" cracks me up every time I listen to it. Looks like the vid with the absolutely ridiculous monologue--the one about "real pain"--was taken down, so this live performance will have to do for now:

NP:
From liner notes, knew that SJ Hawkins had written "I Put a Spell," but had never seen him in person or seen videos of him. If Wiki correct about him fathering between 55 and 75 children, hope Hawkins received plenty of royalties from the songs he wrote.
Impressive understatement in the website devoted to Orbison that has the following:
"Orbison's career became very rudely interrupted when his wife Claudette died in a motorcycle-accident. . . ." |

m, I knew Hawkins had fathered many children, but not THAT many. Looks like the figure is about right, considering the source is NPR's All Things Considered. Like I said, the guy was a crazy MF. |

Just realized that most of the above Evora tunes are upbeat #s. Actually they’re not very representative of her discography, so here are some bittersweet laments from her 2003 album Voz d'Amor:
Amdjer de Nos Terra - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PeQA6coarg
Beijo Roubado - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiWwTIu1Ma4
Mar de Canal - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ho-R7W9O20I
Miss Perfumado may have sold more copies, but Voz d'Amor remains my favorite Cesaria Evora album. It’s one of the very few albums I was ever smitten with. Not excited or delighted, mind you, but SMITTEN. I’ve had a similar experience with a few Schubert and John Dowland songs, but that’s all I can remember. One of my desert island discs. |
