Wimbles 2001

By Jackie Roe, TW Social Director

How is the TWibe doing tonight? I've had yet another rough week, marked by deadlines, sleep deprivation, and not nearly enough tennis. Thanks to the 4th of July, though, my weekend started early (did everyone else in the States have the day off, too?), so today alone, I've been able to make up for both the lack of sleep and tennis!

Speaking of the 4th, how do all the TW Yanks celebrate the occasion? It's not my kind of holiday - as a tee-totaling vegetarian, I can't really partake in the beer/brat celebrations that most Americans seem so fond of! I do like fireworks, though, so I'm looking forward to the displays in my area. Does anyone have fun weekend plans? Independence Day traditions?

Members of our TennisWorld > Real World Facebook group, take note that TWiber Ali C has posted links to some fabulous Wimbledon photo albums. Go have a look! Also, a "USO 2009 - Who is going?" discussion topic is now posted, and it looks like plenty of TWibers are making their way to New York (I wish I were one of 'em!). Closer to the tournament, let's coordinate a TW get-together here in the Deuce Club, yeah?

Last week, I presented some press conference gems from week one of Wimbledon (or round one, actually) and asked you to share your favorite quotes, as well; as promised, I'm calling for quotes once more, this time from week two! Here are a few to get you started:

Serena Williams

Q. Six years ago when you were at the top, she was No. 15, you beat her here. What memories do you have of that match, if any, 2003 at Wimbledon?

A: Yeah, I don't remember that. I'm gonna YouTube it, though.

Venus Williams

Q. I gather you've now joined Twitter. Serena has obviously persuaded you. You said you celebrated your last win with cranberry sauce.

A: Yes. Why?

Q. Well, no. I was wondering how you're going to celebrate this one.

A: Cranberry sauce. I'm actually a candy addict. That's the closest I can get to, like, sugar, is cranberry sauce and raisins. So those are the two things that when I celebrate, it's with cranberry sauce.

Q. Just on its own?

A: Yes. It's a little strange, I know. I happen to like it.

[I loved this comment from Pete in his "Williams Family Woodshed" post this week: Okay, so the British press is Wimbledentric, and wouldn't know Roland Garros from an obscure French aviator. But the way Venus and Serena - always lightning rods for disgruntlement or criticism - had them eating out of their hands confirmed the Any Questions? nature of the way they've been playing here during the fortnight. The above quotes are perfect examples!]

Andy Roddick (of course)

Q. I understand you're quite friendly with Justin Timberlake and that he came to see you on Saturday.

A: Uhm, I've never met him (laughter.)

Q. He likes you.

A: But let's not let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Dinara Safina

Q. Where did these 15 double‑faults come from?

A: 15? I thought it was much more (smiling).

Roger Federer

Q. You played Haas on clay, and maybe clay is not your favorite surface.

A: I'm a clay court specialist, if you haven't realized yet (smiling).

Ivo Karlovic

Q. How tough is it mentally just to keep serve, not to be broken? Is it a very mental step you have to make?

A: No, it is easy for me (smiling).

Q. Can you talk a little bit about your celebration at the end? It was a bit unusual.

A: Yeah, it was my victory dance.

Q. What does it mean, and where did it come from?

A: No, I don't know. It just came because I was happy. I don't know.

Q. So it wasn't planned?

A: No, actually it was planned because all of my matches here after I was doing that. So yeah.

Elena Dementieva

Q. Just a question away from the match. You're named as one of the stylishly dressed players on court. Who would you regard as the most stylish?

A: You mean this season alone?

Q. In terms of dress.

A: I really like my dress (laughing), but I think Venus has a very nice dress, as well.

Novak Djokovic

Q. You seem to be more serious these days than you used to be.

A: Am I (smiling)?

Oh, how I'll miss the British press!

As Wimbledon draws to a close, I thought I'd take some time to reflect on the tournament - and not just this year's. I've made it known several times that Wimbledon is my favorite Slam, my favorite tournament, heck - one of my favorite anythings!

I know, it sounds a little extreme. But Wimbledon's been a part of my life since I was a kid. The minute I catch even a glimpse of Centre Court, I'm flooded with memories.

As I mentioned in my maiden DC post, my eldest sister Jeannette was the one who introduced Wimbledon (and tennis, really, as I hadn't known tennis outside of this Slam) into my life. She'd wake up for "Breakfast at Wimbledon," and my other sister Elizabeth and I would do the same, at first just to spend time with her. (One of her favorite parts of the experience was checking out which royals were in attendance. A Princess Di appearance was always a treat!) Soon enough, though, I was hooked on the tennis itself, not just the sisterly bonding. And then as schooling and travels forced Jeannette to be away from home more often, I'd find myself waking up early for "Breakfast at Wimbledon" all by my lonesome. Now, I cared.

I remember those mornings like they were yesterday. Groggily plopping down in front of the television in my PJs, humming along to the familiar Wimbledon on NBC music (and missing that high note), drooling at the sight of the strawberries 'n' cream being served (were they as yummy as they looked?).

Wimbles 1993 It was from all those years of Wimbledon-watching that Steffi Graf became my absolute favorite player, male or female. The two (Wimbledon and Steffi) are inextricably linked - in my head, anyway - and of all the Wimbledon matches I've witnessed, one that stands out more than most others is the 1993 final between Steffi and Jana Novotna. Of course, it saw Steffi take the championship aided by Jana's epic meltdown. At the time, I was thrilled - and relieved! - that my favorite got through the match. Now, though, I have a far greater appreciation for what Jana endured; I would've sobbed on the Duchess of Kent, too.

Then there was Wimbledon 2001. I was out of the country that summer and couldn't find coverage of the tournament anywhere so I had Jeannette tape it all. I adored Patrick Rafter, so you can just imagine how ecstatic I was to learn that he had advanced to the final. My family and I were fond of Goran Ivanisevic (and his quirks!), as well, so it was a perfect finals scenario. But of course, as I was going to miss it, I instructed my sister to tape it and to Shhhh!, keep the result to herself. I remember doing whatever I could to avoid so much as a mention of sports in the news, so I'd be able to watch the tape in suspense, as if it were live. I successfully made it through the end of the trip without hearing/seeing a thing about the match ... until I got on the plane and saw Goran's mug on the sports page of a newspaper. I almost cried - both because of the spoiler and because my guy lost! When I learned how hard-fought and celebrated the match was, too, it made me all the more wistful for having missed it.

I grew up with Wimbledon and am no less enchanted with it now than I was when it all started. The verdant lawns, the whites, the reserved crowd. It's all singular to this tournament. And it brings out the true tennis fan in me like nothing else. In fact, I probably wouldn't be here today, typing to y'all in a tennis blog, if it weren't for Wimbledon. (I better not start tearing up. No crying in blogging, Jackie!)

Now I'd like to hear from you! You can take this in whatever direction you like, but here's a bit of guidance:

1) What's your Wimbledon? That is, is there an event that's important to you, that you look forward to every year? It can be something as frivolous as a tennis tournament, or maybe it's more serious, like a volunteer activity you partake in annually. How did the "tradition" start, and what about it moves you?

2) If you'd like to stick with the Wimbledon theme, instead, go for it! Tell us about your Wimbledon history, as I did. If you're relatively new to the tournament, feel free to comment on this year's happenings alone. How have you been watching? TV or computer? Home or work? (I won't tell.) Have you had to adjust your sleep/work schedule to catch the action?

And how about handing out some awards? Here are a few ideas to get you started ...

  • Most Cringe-Inducing Wipeout Award (Self-explanatory - and I shouldn't make light of the slips, some of which have resulted in legitimate injuries, but we've just had so darn many!)
  • Who Needs Color? Award (Who rocked the Wimbledon white the best?)
  • ??? Award (This is for those What the ... ? moments. Nominees include Dr. Ivo's celebratory dance, the "bump" between Lisicki and Wozniacki, the spotting of several There's no way he/she is actually a tennis fan celebrities ... )
  • "Best" of 5/"Best" of 3 Award (Obviously, this goes to the best men's and women's matches that went the distance.)

Please use this space to camp out until the action resumes in the AM. Have fun!

Anyone there? Jacko?

Pete may be putting up a post shortly ... or perhaps it'll go up tomorrow? If tonight, I'm hoping y'all are good multi-taskers - congregating in two places is easy, right? :)

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 05:18 PM

Oooh, there it is. HA, coordination fail. ;)

Anyway, stay here for OT-ness, and head on yonder there for Andy-ness. :)

Jacko!!!!!!!!!! Hope you like. :)

Hi Jackie,
Delurking after a long time, and this post brings back fond memories. I remember the first Wimbly I watched was with dad, who was trying to get me into sports. That was the year Agassi and Steffi won the singles. Meh, Steffi was probably the first crush of a young boy who till then heartily despised pig-tailed girls!!
Oh! Gossip time. I still remember a center-fold in a sports magazine of Agassi and Steffi posing at the champions' ball post-Wimbly! Guess who felt psychic when they got hitched?

Posted by Jacko 07/03/2009 at 05:28 PM

oh...wimbledon is my wimbledon......wimbledon 04 to be exact.....i was behind masha from the third round......after wimbly 04....i was hooked.......without masha winning....i wonder wud i still love tennis as much????
other tourneys i love are RG and Stuttgart WTA!!LOL
and my real "wimbledon" is CTYI....its just my everything....and i only hav a week left of it until next year....*cries*.....and i will literally cry non-stop for the next 2 weeks.... :(

*goes back to read other questions*

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 05:28 PM

puran! It HAS been awhile! Stick around, yeah?

Ha, was Steffi not the greatest? Heck, *I* had a crush on her!

Posted by Codge 07/03/2009 at 05:29 PM

Hey Jackie! Glad you have a day of rest.

Wacko Jacko ;-)

Mental health break required here as well. Yes some like me worked today, heading home ;-)

Will read the post properly later tonight, but for the quote solicitaion; Venus has the best quote for my $$

“ Are you trying to be down on women’s tennis? I’m just making sure you’re not trying to be down, because I respect Dinara Safina immensely, and I think you should, too!"
— Venus Williams - The Championships, Wimbledon 2009

Cheers!

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 05:30 PM

CTYI? Should I know this, Jacko? Oh, wait, is this the program you're involved in? *feels lame for not keeping up with Jacko's life better*

Nice post, Jackie! Nice presser choices too. I too will really really miss the British press.

I waited up for this, Jackie, it had better be good. :)

it will be. :)

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 05:32 PM

Hey, Codge! Do come back - you know we'll be around. :)

And I loved that entire press/Vee interaction. All class, that woman.

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 05:33 PM

HA, jewell! Aw, hope it doesn't disappoint. Not as good as last week's, of course, since it had your Wimbles report. ;)

C NOTE! Good lawd, woman, I haven't talked to you in forever! How are things? A rough Wimbles for you, huh.

Posted by Jacko 07/03/2009 at 05:35 PM

yes Jackie...the thing i'm doing now!!LOL....that i DCed about last week!!LOL.....its just the best place in the world.....i love it so.....
hmmm....as i've seen like no wimbly this year....i hav not got many opinions!!LOL....however...undoubtedly my fav moment in terms of interviews was Venus defending Women's Tennis and Dinara....the woman is total class.....and for all the people who love to bash women's tennis.....i think that "fans" cud take a page from Venus' book....and hav some respect for the game...

other wimbly moment.....me in tears practically for Stan and LenaD.........oh and MLADENOVIC!!!!!! *loves*

Posted by C Note (KimSearsKAD) 07/03/2009 at 05:36 PM

Wimbly is *always* rough for me. So it goes.

Otherwise, things are going well. Just plugging away. Trying to figure out which California tourneys I'll be able to attend. Fun.

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 05:39 PM

Jacko, so it's been a fabulous experience, I take it? What are you up to after it ends?

I'm still watching the NBC coverage ... making up for lost time, apparently ... ;)

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 05:40 PM

LOL on Kim Sears KAD, C Note.

Speaking of attending tourneys, Cincy is rapidly approaching and so far I know of ONE TWiber aside from me who's going for sure. That's not right! C'mon, guys!!!

Posted by Jacko 07/03/2009 at 05:41 PM

oh Jackie....i cant explain...its one of the few places where i actually totally "belong" (TW is another)......i love every minute of it....my only regrets are that i hav only done one year before this......when i cud hav done a few before it!!!!LOL
after it ends....i'll most likely cry for a week (its the final year for a lot of my friends....and some i will never see again :( ).......and then i'll see where i go from there.....

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 05:42 PM

Y'all not into the awards? Do we do it too often? ;)

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 05:45 PM

Aw, JACKO. You break my heart. Not to worry, you'll have plenty of wonderful experiences in the future. How could you not, being so wonderfully bright and gifted?

*steps out of hot fudge sundae*

Here's a good plan for the rest of the summer ... come to the States! Oh wait, aren't you doing that?

Posted by Jenni 07/03/2009 at 05:46 PM

"ONE TWiber aside from me who's going for sure. That's not right!"

Chopped liver, checking in. ;)

Someone told Lena D that she's one of the most stylish women on court? I find that shocking.

Posted by jewell - Just say no to Fedal wars! 07/03/2009 at 05:48 PM

Lovely post, Jackie. Can I do awards etc tomorrow? I'm really tired...*bats eyelashes*

I think everyone could guess my favourite Wimbledon. ;-)

Night, everyone. :)

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 05:48 PM

In like a lion, always, Jenni.

So I guess it's just you and me, girl. Cincy, WATCH OUT. (More like Gilles and Ferru.)

Here's one award I'll throw out there:

The "Seriously, How Do You Guys Sleep At Night" Award: To the British press during Anne Keothavong's presser after her first round loss.

Q. This is not an accusation, but do you feel as though you’ve let a few people down today?

ANNE KEOTHAVONG: I feel like I’ve let myself down more than anything. You know, Wimbledon is such a special tournament to me. And, you know, this year especially, I just felt, you know, I’ve overcome so much just to get where I am (tearing up.)

Q. Did you put more pressure on yourself, do you think?

THE MODERATOR: Can we stop for a few minutes.

(Pause in interview.)

ANNE KEOTHAVONG: Sorry.
(2 questions later...)

Q. The way the Brits are going out today, it’s shaping up to be a pretty dark day for British tennis at Wimbledon. Do you feel sort of a collective responsibility, or are you solely focused on your own results?

ANNE KEOTHAVONG: You know, I can’t speak for the other girls. I can only focus on my own tennis. You know, that’s hard enough as it is.

You know, the other girls, I’m sure, have tried their hardest. You can’t guarantee the results at the end of the day, but I think you can definitely guarantee that all the British girls have tried, you know, 110%.

Posted by Jenni 07/03/2009 at 05:56 PM

Most Cringe-Inducing Wipeout Award: Julien. Take your pick which one, but I think spectators are still leaving flowers in front of that wall.

Who Needs Color? Award: Mario Ancic, in absentia, because he looked so very nice last year.

??? Award: Petrova's dress ruffle. WTF indeed.

"Best" of 5/"Best" of 3 Award: Serena-Elena and Lleyton-Andy.

Posted by Tom 07/03/2009 at 05:56 PM

Hope espn and nbc in america will not telecast women's finals. It will be good for men's tennis, in general. Espn and nbc seem to have the habit of either replacing men's tennis with williams' tennis so it'll be nice if espn and nbc stop telecasting williams' tennis forever, for good.

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 05:58 PM

Oof, that Anne presser was brutal. Poor thing. :(

The pressure on these Brits is ENORMOUS.

Hey, I just realized I get one more hour of sleep tonight and tomorrow night! Yay for 14:00 starts. ;)

Posted by Jacko 07/03/2009 at 05:59 PM

i hope so jackie.....i'll just be all sad for a while.....and sad jacko isnt nice to see...

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 06:00 PM

Jenni, it was either Julien or Llodra.

Aw, Mario. He looks nice every year. Everywhere. In anything. *COUGH*

The Petrova dress was SO going in my nominees, but I didn't want to be too brutal. I leave brutality to you. ;)

Posted by TennisTarkheena 07/03/2009 at 06:01 PM

Hey Jackie!!

4th of July: My FAVORITE HOLIDAY. I love the warmth (nothing beats a Colorado summer) We got up to Estes Park in the Rocky Mountains (my favorite place in the world) They shoot off fireworks over the lake and the valley makes the booms echo spectacularly. Estes is my "wimbledon" every summer for as long as I can remember my mommy and I would go there and wonder the streets (a real tourist trap if one ever existes) and have lunch together. I get ALL my jewelry there from this little shop and it's just SO beautiful.

Massive congrats to Andy Roddick on the win today, comms to Murray fans.

AM/Beth: I saw a shoe store called "True Love" in Denver the other day :)

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 06:03 PM

Stick with us, Jacko. We won't allow you to be unhappy. :)

Wait, were there any other WTA matches that would give Rena-Elena a run for its money?

Posted by C Note (KimSearsKAD) 07/03/2009 at 06:03 PM

Uh...what? How would *not* broadcasting tomorrow's Ladies' Final have any impact on Sunday's Sausage Final?

And like it or not, the Williamses bring in ratings, which means ad dollars. So if you want to see any tennis at all, you better get used to it.

Anyway (I can't believe I'm actually defending the Williames these days)

Another award:

The You Go Girl, Award: Venus' "down" smackdown on the idiot reporter after her SF win.

??? Award: This Serena comment:

Q. What is the subject matter of the TV script that you're writing?

SERENA WILLIAMS: Uhm, it's a mixture between some of my favorite shows, like Desperate Housewives, and Sex and the City, and actually Family Guy. It's kind of those put together in one, if you can imagine.

Posted by jb... (YIPPEEE SKIPPPEE RANDY!) 07/03/2009 at 06:03 PM

ooh - i second julien's crash into the wall as best wipeout. as soon as i read that i shuddered all over again.

best match - i'm thinking haas / marin? gosh, there were some good ones. rumour had it that gonzo / juanqui was a good'un too.

sigh. ok, i HAVE TO go do some stuffs. i'll pop back in later!

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 06:06 PM

Hi, TennisTarkheena!!!

Gotta say, I love coming here week after week and seeing all y'all. If I never talk to you during the week, I know it's all good 'cause I'll be able to catch up with you here. :)

Oh, TT, that sounds just lovely. If I were there, I'd love the holiday, too!

Hmmm. Incidentally, I'd give the best fireworks display nod to Disneyland ...

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 06:08 PM

jb, you tease! Awwwwwwww, come back soooooooooooon. :)

Serena's writing a TV script? Er ...

Posted by Jacko 07/03/2009 at 06:09 PM

nothing will cheer me up at first Jax...i#m sure the TWibe will speed the process up though!!LOL

Posted by C Note (KimSearsKAD) 07/03/2009 at 06:09 PM

Serena's writing a screenplay and Venus likes eating straight cranberry sauce. Things you learn reading pressers.

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 06:11 PM

Gotta say, I love cranberry sauce, too. :)

Miss Jacie O Weeps at that picture of Aussie Legend and All Round Good Guy Pat Rafter Major Sigh!

Oh what a game!.Why oh Why didnt the Tennis Gods let Pat win that one tournament the he Wanted Soo Much? hey just like the rest of us.

I will never, ever get over that one.Remember so vividly Briony and I still awake at like 3am still hoping and dreaming he would pull through.

At the end we just sat in sheer disbelief and wept.

Never want to go through that pain again ever,

Guess what I have lol!

Posted by TennisFan2 07/03/2009 at 06:11 PM

Vee had the best dress - hands down no debate!

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 06:13 PM

Hey, aussiemarg! Awww, I didn't mean to dredge up any awful memories!

Y'know, even though Pat was the love of my life at the time, in that pic above, I only notice Goran. He's all smoldering and such.

Posted by Mr. X 07/03/2009 at 06:14 PM

And DC is back! Hi, Jackie.
No comment on Independence Day, naturally, but beer/brat celebrations soung good to me:)
Here in Spain, the Grand Slam that gets you into tennis is not Wimbledon, but RG (i still remember Brugera vs. Berasategui, and i think i was 8 at the time). Wimbledon coverage has only become more popular with the Rafa-boom. Before that, the coverage was minimal, as the Spanish didnt do exactly very well there. Actually, my first Wimbledon memories come as a young teenager and they are (not all that surprisingly) from the WTA side: Hingis and Kournikova in the SF, 1997. I dont even remember how i watched that match, but i'll never forget it.

Jacko Hi,good to see you here

I have missed you especially the LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey where have you been hiding?

Posted by Mr. X 07/03/2009 at 06:21 PM

OK, quotes. I have collected a few.
I guess you saw how Venus layeth the smackdown on the reporter's candy @$$ in pete's post the other day. Here's something in the same line, from today's doubles presser:

Q. Is this the last time the two of you will speak to each other for the next 24 hours?
VENUS WILLIAMS: Please. Humor us with something a little more creative.

That was a pretty good presser, actually. There, a couple more:

Q. When you were young players, did you admire the same tennis heroes or heroines, or did you support someone different? Which ones?
VENUS WILLIAMS: I don't know what I thought when I was young. I was just living, so I don't know. I was very oblivious as to what was real and what wasn't.

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Q. Serena, you're into surfing. Is that why you think your forehand went to Hawaii yesterday? Have you been in touch with your forehand? What did your forehand say?
SERENA WILLIAMS: My forehand is hopefully on a flight. But I don't know. We'll see. We'll see tomorrow.

Even more ?????????????????????????????????????????????????

Q. Do you have anything you would like to ask one another as you've thought about the press conferences each of you has held during this fortnight on different days and seen each one play? What question do you have for one another at this point?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Are you ready to get out of here (laughter)?
VENUS WILLIAMS: Ditto (smiling).

And the smackdown continues.

Posted by aussiemarg [Madame President in Comma Rehab for 2009] 07/03/2009 at 06:23 PM

My best of 5 award goes to,

Roddick v Hewitt Gee what a match by both guys

My best of 3 award goes to,

Serena v Elena, wow the best game Elena has played to date, gee she had her chances but to Serena's credit that I never say die attitude pulled through once again.

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 06:24 PM

Hey, Mr.X! Was just thinking about you. Starved for some wrestling conversation. And yesterday was Bret Hart's birthday. ;)

Y'all can do the beers and brats. I'll stick with, like, spritzer and pretzels. ;)

Thinking about it ... and don't slap me for being fangirly ... but it's rather lovely that my fave tournament ended up being my new fave's fave tournament. You know? I didn't plan it that way, but here we are. It's gotta be destiny. Clearly. :) (Humming Zero 7's "Destiny" now ... )

My best colour award,

Who looks good in white,

Miss Vee without a doubt, love that dress.

Posted by Pspace 07/03/2009 at 06:29 PM

Hola Jackie! Jajaja...nice quotes.

As for the question...ummm...started watching tennis when I was 4 or so. My folks had a video-cassette (now known as DVDs) of the Borg-Mac '80 and '81 finals. Whole family are crazy tennis fans...so we frazzle/fight during all the slams.

Best matches so far?

Best-of-3: Re vs Lena
Best-of-5: JCF vs Gonzo

Hopefully the finals can surpass those. Notable mention to Muzz-Wawrinka, and Rusty-Randy...though I didn't think the quality was that high.

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 06:30 PM

HA, Mr.X, those are quality. Wonder what it's like over there in Williams Land.

Okay, so Vee in white. What about the boys?

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 06:33 PM

Hi, Pspace!!!

Is your whole family still into tennis? As into it as you are?

Crap, I missed ALL of these awesome matches. How did those of you in the States manage to watch? DVR? Playing hooky?

Posted by Pspace 07/03/2009 at 06:34 PM

Oh best outfits? I liked the Adidas white with red stripes (though certain authorities inform me that it's a fashion faux pas). Of the Adidas players I thot Nole, Nando, and Wozniacki were the pick. MaKiri's last hurrah (?) with Stella gets two thumbs(?) up. Venus is always good. WTF award goes to Sgt. Pepper. After that disaster/comedy, everything else was tame. I liked Masha's version of the jacket.

Pspace You must have read my mind

The best ever Wimbledon match for me going back

1980 Borg v Mac wow what a t/breaker which went for over 20mins the best ever t/breaker ever.

My idol won in the end.Phew I still watch that final even today

A real Gem

Hey you were only 4 then? Lordy! lol!

Those were the days.

Posted by Pspace 07/03/2009 at 06:37 PM

Jackie, yeah...every1 was calling every1 when Roger won RG. It was so awesome. Mom was crying like crazy. Dad and uncles were making fun of him for crying...again! I don't think the rest of them follow the MS level tournaments...though I wouldn't be surprised if my grandpa or cousin bro was posting on TW ;-).

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 06:38 PM

Mr.X you'll appreciate this - Bret's jacket was based off of SPLHCB, too. Probably better executed than Fed's. When wrestling garb wins ANYTHING, you know you're in trouble.

Still like the jacket better than the vest, though. ;)

Posted by C Note (KimSearsKAD) 07/03/2009 at 06:40 PM

Mmmm...Zero 7.

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 06:41 PM

LOL, Pspace. So they're Rog fans, too?

If relatives of Pspace are out there, make sure to wave!

Love seeing my Venus getting all of these awards. I second the motion on her smackdown of that idiot reporter as the best piece from a presser, and I like her dress very much.

But I was thinking...if she wins Wimbledon and she's brought a backless dress for the ball, will she have lines on her back from the strips in the design of the back of the dress??? :)

Which reminds me that I like the length of Murray's new Fred Perry shorts (not exactly Edberg/Becker length, more like Rafter/Goran in the picture above), but he could have avoided the pale look on his thighs if he hadn't obviously practiced all the time in the old loooong shorts that most of the guys are still wearing.

So...for the best men's outfit, the award goes to MAndy, mainly because of the shorter shorts!

Most gutsy performance...Andy roddick, semi-final. (He even did a Becker dive!)

Posted by Mr. X 07/03/2009 at 06:43 PM

Jackie,
I heard the result of the WWE title match at the last PPV (they change the names so much i dont even know what is what). And i couldnt believe it. I just kept thinking: is there a way to bury more a guy while he keeps being champion? Orton was a sick beast before WM, and after some months of feud with the Big-Nosed guy, he looks weak. And the worst part of it is that it wasnt the first time.
Bret's birthday? Well, i must admit my biggest hiatus from wrestling was during his best years, as i came back around WM 13. My biggest memory of him, apart from the obvious one, is that match when Austin just "passed out" refusing to quit. That was very well done to make Austin the big hero.

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 06:43 PM

*waves to Ruth*

Agreed on the Muzz shorts. Good length. Such a contrast to Rod's outfit, which remains 4 sizes too big.

Posted by Tom 07/03/2009 at 06:45 PM

Those of us in USA are watching replays and 5 minute highlights of all men's matches and full, extremely full, more-than-necessary coverage of most women's matches and minute-by-minute coverage of williams' life in england on espn and nbc.

Posted by aussiemarg [Madame President in Comma Rehab for 2009] 07/03/2009 at 06:45 PM

Also I loved Dr Ivo's dance at the end when he was winning

Gee he loves Bee Bop who would have thought? lol!

Posted by Tom 07/03/2009 at 06:46 PM

thanks to justin.tv, we could watch most of the men's matches online though. I have a link to star sports and have seen some great matches in great quality online on star sports. Thanks to all online broadcasters.

Posted by aussiemarg [Madame President in Comma Rehab for 2009] 07/03/2009 at 06:47 PM

I wish James Blake would go back to Nike

Gee his t-shirts are becoming Roddick like lol!

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 06:47 PM

Mr.X, that Bret/SCSA battle is maybe the greatest WM match of all time. :)

Wait, but Orton won at the PPV, right? So I was all fine and dandy with where things were at, but then he had to lose to effing MARK HENRY the next night. Barf-o-rama.

Glad that Edge/Jericho are the tag champs, though. Makes those belts look WAY more important.

Posted by avid sports fan aka "Sigh-Rena" 07/03/2009 at 06:49 PM

Haven't been around at DC in a while but it's good to be here again :) Thanks Jackie!

Mr. X - I saw those quotes from their presser after their doubles match and I was just cracking up. Vee really knows how to give it to those reporters ;-)

As for the dresses I would go with Miss Vee and Canada's #1 Aleksandra Wozniak. BTW I also l love what Aleks had at the FO too ;-)

As for the men I really don't know. Nothing really caught my eye or stood out positively.

The best of three match SF between Elena and Serena
The best of five match between JCF Gonzo and AndyR Lleyton.

My best Wimbledon to date was last year which I think I followed most religiously (literally yes I was checking scores in church using my MD's computer and otherwise)and had three out of my fave 5 in their respective finals :)

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 06:49 PM

Ugh, James's shirts are even WORSE than Rod's, aussiemarg.

Hey, I haven't seen a vid of the Ivo dance, only photos. Can I YouTube it?

Posted by Jenni 07/03/2009 at 06:50 PM

"Mr.X, that Bret/SCSA battle is maybe the greatest WM match of all time. :)"

Oh come on, better than the Iron Man match at WM XII??

Aw crap, I told myself I wasn't going to get into this again. :)

Posted by Pspace 07/03/2009 at 06:50 PM

Jackie, I think only me and my mum are Fed KADs. We're mostly tennis fans tho'...and sorta decide who to root for during the match. Fed is pretty easy on the eye for the most part...except when he plays ultra-passive like in USO '07 F or totes stupid like in RG '08 F...even I wasn't rooting for him there.

Posted by TennisTarkheena 07/03/2009 at 06:51 PM

I have to say that the guy I most appreciated this tournament was Hott Sauce, the new hair do and the white shirt with the polo neckline - mmmmmmm I finally understand the double "tt" in his nickname :)

Posted by VC 07/03/2009 at 06:53 PM

"sorta decide who to root for during the match..."

Gloryhunters. ;-)

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 06:54 PM

Hey, avid! So glad you stopped by. :)

Oh, I remember when you were in church, checking scores!!! Wait, who are the other 2?

Posted by Mr. X 07/03/2009 at 06:54 PM

"When wrestling garb wins ANYTHING, you know you're in trouble."
Well, Jackie, the Captain Switzerland jacket would be defeated by anything:)
Tennis in this post.
Some more quotes, this time from Roddick, who said in his last one that he thinks the British crowd like him because "the British media ask him this goofy questions that he can answer with goofy answers". It seems that today he was feeling goofy concerning Brooklyn:

Q. You talked about your family. Roger is a married man, too. How much of a role does your family play in your success of this year?
ANDY RODDICK: You know, I don't know. I know that kind of being happy and not having any worries away from the court, in my mind it can only help things. You know, Brook has been a very calming influence, and someone that I can kind of confide in and not have to put up, you know, a super brave front in front of.
So it's been real good. And, you know, certainly makes the box better looking.

Oh, certainly, Andy. Certainly.

Another one about the wife:

Q. Back to the conversation you had with your wife at the end of last year of whether you could play or not. What side did you take and what side did she take?
ANDY RODDICK: It was a year ago here. I was probably leaning towards not really playing that well. She didn't really know much about tennis, so she thought I was playing real great (laughter).
Q. And she convinced you?
ANDY RODDICK: Yeah, she thought I looked cute in the shorts.

And one more, this time about his deep process of thought:

Q. You're coming off two huge wins. What is going to be your approach for the next match against a tough competitor?
ANDY RODDICK: We haven't discussed it yet.
Q. Within yourself, what are your thoughts about the upcoming final?
ANDY RODDICK: We still haven't discussed it yet (smiling).

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 06:54 PM

I mean, I know the 3. But who are the other 2 in the 5?

Articulation fail.

Posted by aussiemarg [Madame President in Comma Rehab for 2009] 07/03/2009 at 06:56 PM

Miss Jackie I will see if I can, will have to go back and check

Just love Dr Ivo gee this Wimby he seems to be coming out of his shell.Maybe hs is just a Party Animal after all? lol!

Posted by avid sports fan aka "Sigh-Rena" 07/03/2009 at 06:58 PM

Jackie - :) James "my take home man" Blake (who someone has to beg to wear clothes his size and let him know that he looks good in them *sigh*) and Svetlana Kuznetsova (she probably still had the hangover from FO and doe snot like grass) And oh did I mention that I like Kuzzy's kit too ;-)

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 06:58 PM

Ha, Pspace! "Stupid like." Don't remind me. ;)

Jenni, I actually would say 13 over 12. Just because of how they were able to execute a double turn in the course of a match. Pretty extraordinary.

Still, my favorite WM match is probably Bret/Owen at WM 10. Gawd, I LOVED that show.

Posted by beth 07/03/2009 at 07:00 PM

Hi, Jackie !
another friday another deuce :)
I will be in and out for the next hour - but I will be back with thoughts about my faves and the fourth -
got to walk the dog
Just wanted to say - I am so proud of Andy R - and the Roddick bus
I don't think he has ever played a better match, that I have seen

now - as for my wimby awards
Julien definitely gets " best crash " award
Best dress? I liked Elena D's and I am trying to remember Jelena's - but I think I liked that one - if I am remembering it right
The WTF celeb moment was the mention of Matthew Perry 's tweet about hats on players - what ? who cares ? maybe they want to keep the sun out of their eyes , Chandler Bing

ok - and I def think we need a Top 10 WAGS list one of these days

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 07:00 PM

Sveta was a major disappointment. It's like she just wanted to rush off to her birthday party. We never did hear how the birthday went, did we ... ;)

Rod's pressers are SO fun.

Posted by Ruth 07/03/2009 at 07:03 PM

Hey, Jackie!

I love Roddick, but I cannot understand why Lacoste lets him wear their stuff so many sizes too large. I cannot think of someone looking at his outfits and saying, "I gotta get me some of that,":) although a couple of my teenaged grandnephews wear oversized T-shirts etc. Maybe Lacoste is trying to reach that demographic via Andy.

Posted by avid sports fan aka "Sigh-Rena" 07/03/2009 at 07:03 PM

Jackie - unfortunately we did not hear about the party. The girl needs an attitude change about grass. Geez, she has a game that should be able to translate well to grass. But I'll let it slip this year since she won the French Open ;-)

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 07:04 PM

BETH! :)

Agreed on Rod. I was sort of stunned, actually, with his level of play. We haven't seen that from him in a while! He really kept it together in an extremely difficult situation. Well done, man.

And Muzz should be proud of himself, too.

LOL, Chandler Bing. ;)

Posted by Pspace 07/03/2009 at 07:05 PM

Ouch:

"""
Did you pay big money for a ticket in the hope of watching Andy Murray in the men's final on Sunday? If so, our newsdesk would love to hear from you. Please e-mail your story to: sport@timesonline.co.uk
"""

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/tennis/article6632466.ece

Muzz better get on a cruise to somewhere far far away...Miami, I guess.

Posted by Mr. X 07/03/2009 at 07:07 PM

Jackie,
Yeah, he won. But it looked like a total fluke, and i think he should have gotten a clean win at some point in that feud, and he didnt, as happens many times when you are feuding against that guy. You could say it's because he's a heel, but when HHH was a heel, he did get clean victories (i still remember Hell in a Cell against my man HBK)
Edge and Jericho are so good they give relevance to anything they do. By the way, i understand the "blanded" MVP is already buried, too. Oh, the shame.
Those 2 matches are probably the best of WM in terms of quality, but none is close to Rock-Hogan at WM 18 in terms of atmosphere, even though i couldnt believe it when the people turned on the people's champion. He sure came back in style next year, being one of the best heels in this decade.

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 07:07 PM

Ruth, maybe. But Stan looked just fine in his Lacoste gear. What's up with these Yankee boys? :)

avid, so true. Sveta gets a pass for pretty much anything, after RG.

Ooh, speaking of Stan, I should've included the quote about his nose in the presser. Really, guys? Was that necessary?

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 07:09 PM

Mr.X, Rock/Hogan was epic. Hogan/Warrior at WM 6 had its share of atmosphere, too, no?

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 07:12 PM

HA, Pspace. I'm a little bitter we won't see the Queen on Sunday.

Posted by aussiemarg [Madame President in Comma Rehab for 2009] 07/03/2009 at 07:14 PM

Speaking of Cruise

Tom,Katie and Suri are in Melbourne

Katie is going to shoot a Horror film, whatever.

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 07:15 PM

Are they, aussiemarg? Is everyone clamoring to get close?

They all scare me. 'Cept for Suri, who I think is uber-adorable.

Posted by aussiemarg [Madame President in Comma Rehab for 2009] 07/03/2009 at 07:17 PM

Well I hope Gavin Rosedale dosent lit up and smoke?

Disgusting habit to begin with.Fancy near a pregnant woman to start with.

Someone should hose him down if he does it again.pfft.

Posted by Mr. X 07/03/2009 at 07:18 PM

OK,
Some more thoughts on the post. My Wimbledon is 2008, of course.
This year, i have watched more on the computer, posting my semi-match calls here at TW.
On that note, i would like to suggest a new award:
Best Match Call on TW: Wozniacki-Kirilenko. The day the fanboys took over TW and ruled it during an hour.
Again, not a fashion expert, but i liked the outfits in the match i just mentioned (wait, was it really the outfits?). Two disasters worth mentioning are that thing on Petrova's dress and the Captain Switzerland jacket.
???? Award: the look in Oracene's eyes when she saw the over-the-top reaction of Richard's new wife after Serena beat Lena.
Best matches:
Serena-Dementieva in the WTA (what else?)
Gonzo-JCF in the ATP (although Haas-Cilic, Muzz-Stan and Hewitt-Roddick were close) Muzz-Stan was probably the one that had more drama.

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 07:18 PM

Speaking of being near a pregnant woman, Sara Foster was pretty annoying. I wasn't hanging around the CC/Overflow earlier today, so maybe it's been talked about to death ...

Posted by aussiemarg [Madame President in Comma Rehab for 2009] 07/03/2009 at 07:19 PM

Miss Jackie Yes they have countless body and security guards everytime they go out

Tom took Suri to the Zoo and she brought her a toy Kangaroo

She is adorable, pity about her father lol!

Posted by Pspace 07/03/2009 at 07:20 PM

"""
Best Match Call on TW: Wozniacki-Kirilenko. The day the fanboys took over TW and ruled it during an hour.
"""

Yeah that was a lot of fun. Especially giving the TW ladies a dose of their own medicine.

My Wimbledon would be 1992, followed closely by 2007 ;-).

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 07:22 PM

Yep, there's something about Cruise that's just not right.

Wow, that's so not a good reason to dislike someone. Go me. LOL.

Oooh, another ??? Award nominee goes to the AELTC for the whole pretty girls on Centre Court thing. ;)

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 07:24 PM

Too much girl power here in TW. ;)

Posted by Jackie 07/03/2009 at 07:25 PM

How are there no Ivo victory dance vids on YouTube??? *trying different searches*

Posted by Mr. X 07/03/2009 at 07:25 PM

Tom Cruise is creepy.
Jackie,
Hogan/Warrior is my first WM memory, as a little kid who still thought it was "real". I was going with the Warrior at the time. Now, what both guys have done in their lifes dont make any of them likeable at all, in my opinion.
And about Rock/Hogan, i couldnt believe it when they booed The Rock.
This could be a good topic: what are your best 5 WM moments?
