<<  The Spirit of Thunder Snakebit Tommy  >>

Wimbledon Crisis Center, Day 10 07/02/2009 - 7:12 AM

88774450

Mornin'. First, I have a few housekeeping notes regarding my last post(Snakebit Tommy).  A number of readers complained that I was wrong to write that Tommy Haas hasn't won a Masters Shield - he bagged on at Stuttgart, 2001. I did check that stat while writing:  the ATP media guide has a grid-graph clearly charting each player's performance in majors and Masters. Stuttgart does not appear on Haas's chart.

I  re-checked after repeated complaints, and found some fine print below the chart, which credits him with a Stuttgart victory (and a 7-4 record, which I assume is a career tally there), but leaves it at that. His overall Stuttgart stats (round achieved, year-by-year), and that pleasing, bold-faced appear nowhere on his graph Upon double-checking with other sources, I see that Stuttgart was indeed an AMS (the former shorthand for ATP Masters Series, now Masters 1000 events), Tommy did indeed win it in 2001, so I stand corrected. Thanks for pointing out the oversight. And to whoever was in high dugeon that a "professional" tennis write could make such a towering error I can only say, I'm glad I gave you an opportunity to fling out your chest and crow a bit.

I assume that the ATP is ignoring results from defunct Masters tournaments, and that's a mistake. What if Miami or Paris disappeared tomorrow - do Agassi or Federer's accomplishments there get excised from history? Well, at least there's that fine print, but for someone like me that's an invitation to error.

And also on Haas: some readers found it weak that Haas would be "happy" that  Roger Federer made that inside-out forehand that foretold Haas's doom at the French Open. This was one of those cases where context really mattered, yet I felt it would have been too awkward to clutter up the post with an explanation. The bottom line is that Haas was by no means obsequious about Federer; in fact, his analysis was Teutonically realistic and cold.

Basically, Tommy said: I blew it, Roger's my friend and the GOAT, and I've moved on. Let's talk about something else. If anything there was a note of impatience with the issue, and while his tone wasn't exactly sarcastic, it wasn't  unctuous, either. And his attitude was consistent with Haas's impatience with, and aversion to, dwelling on the past - sentiments to which he's given voice many times.

So there you have it.

Meanwhile, I'm sitting here wondering what on earth I can write about Venus or Serena as a follow-up to my latest post on them (Williams Family Woodshed, below). That's doubly true if these two semifinals are a blowout. I'm tempted to go out and watch Alexander Domijan and Devin Britton, who play their quarterfinal soon on Court 18, which may be the best court of all for watching a match here.

Court 18 is notionally a "show court", with a breathtaking, tall spectator gallery at the north end. But at heart it's a field court, which means that the modest six or seven rows of seats parallel with the sidelines are very close to the court, and the press seating section - at the southwest corner of the court, is as close as you can come to being right on the court with the players.

El Jon Wertheim and I went out to catch a little of defending junior champ Laura Robson's match on Court 18 yesterday (suffering with a back injury, Robson was upset by Quirine Lemoine of the Nederlands). Robson battled gamely, sweeping away three match points midway through the third set. A little later, with the match in the balance, Robson's mother called out, "Come on Laura, stay positive!"

At that moment, Robson stood about six feet from us, pressing a towel to her forehead, looking pained. She partially covered her mouth with the towel and shouted into it, "What do you think I'm doing?"

Only on Court 18, folks.

Enjoy the tennis!

Pete

Hej alla, get ready to rumble. Go V. Go S. I want a all Williams final. You know who is really funny, Richard's new wife when she shouts, "come on Serena/Venus." She's very loud and they caught her on camera, it was hilarious.

I'm sorry, but who dresses Bud Collins???

WTA Semifinal preview:

(A-5)Dinara Safina vs (A-1)Venus Williams
Dinara has made 4 consecutive Slam semifinals after defeating Sabine Lisicki in 3 sets despite 15 DFs on her serve. On her previous 3 trips to the semifinals, her road to the title has been derailed by Serena Williams, who went on to win the title. Dinara draw has been very kind as the highest player she played, other than Amelie Mauresmo, was ranked 41. Venus has won the last 52 sets(32 singles and 20 doubles) that she has played at Wimbledon. Saw the replay of her match against Agnieszka Radwanska on Wimbledon Primetime and some of the shots Agnieszka hit would have been winners on another day but not against Venus. That match was the best one,IMO, that Venus has played.

Prediction : Venus Williams advances to her 8th Wimbledon final in straight sets(one may be a 7-5 or 7-6)

(A-8)Elena Dementieva vs (A-2)Serena Williams
Elena has cruised through the draw without media attention winning all of her matches in straight sets with the highest rank opponent she played was 37. After not making the Wimbledon SF during most of her career, she has now made consecutive SF. Serena has played very well in her last 2 matches and is determined to take the Venus Rosewater Dish from her sister, who is trying to 3-peat since Steffi Graf in 1993. Also, Serena will remember that she led Elena by a set and a break at the Beijing Olympics but lost and also led Svetlana Kuznetsova by a break at the French Open but her normal reliable serve let her down.

Prediction : Serena Williams quest for her 11th Slam(and 3rd Wimbledon) title will continue in straight sets(one may be 7-5 or 7-6)

Posted by Master Ace 07/02/2009 at 07:55 AM

WTA Doubles Semifinal Preview:

(1)Cara Black and Liezel Huber vs (4)Serena Williams and Venus Williams
Cara/Liezel are the undisputed number one team in the world as they have won 23 titles since the start of 2007 including consecutive Sony Ericsson Championships and 3 Slams(2007 Australian Open, 2007 Wimbledon, 2008 United States Open). Only Slam missing from their resume is the French Open where they have lost to Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginie Ruano Pascual in consecutive years. In their last 2 matches, they have lost the first set but rallied to win. Serena/Venus is trying to repeat Wimbledon and win their 2nd Slam of 2009 winning the Australian Open in January. They lost a tight 3 setter that was decided in a tiebreak to Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Nadia Petrova. After they broke Bethanie/Nadia serving for the match at 5-4, the Williams Sisters had a chance to serve it out at 6-5 but could not capitalize. They are going for their 14th career title(11th Slam or Olympics) and 4th Wimbledon (2000,2002,2008). I will list their other Slam titles if they make the final.

Prediction: Serena Williams and Venus Williams

(3)Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs vs (2)Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginie Ruano Pascual
Samantha/Rennae was tested in their quarterfinal match against Kristina Barrois and Tathiana Garbin rallying from a first set deficit to keep their quest to win their first career title as a team. Anabel/Virginie is trying to win the Channel Slam(and their 6th title as a team with 2 of them consecutive French Open titles) and give Virginie a Career Slam. They defeated Alisa Kleybanova and Ekaterina Makarova, who defeated Daniela Hantuchova/Ai Sugiyama and Bethanie Mattek-Sands/Nadia Petrova.

Prediction: Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs

Correction:

"On her previous 3 trips to the semifinals, her road to the title has been derailed by Serena Williams, who went on to win the title"

Meant to say - ...derailed by Serena Williams twice, who went on to win the title, and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the French Open finals.

Posted by yello fuzzy 07/02/2009 at 08:06 AM

Demi looked nervous in her interview (doe in the headlights)
Serena looked annoyed( a lioness playing with her food before she pounces)

I'd love to see Elena win this one or at least make it a good match and/or take it to three sets. I don't know if Elena has much of a chance considering how well Serena played against even Azarenka... but a girl can dream!

Posted by Damien 07/02/2009 at 08:30 AM

Not Wimbledon related, so I apologize if it's not acceptable to post this here, but it is relating to a currently running tennis tournament. I just noticed on the live scores section of the website that John Isner lost in the round of 32 at a tournament called 'Winnetka' - wherever that is... to an unranked player. Anybody know what happened to John? I remember a couple of years ago (1? 2?) he was being touted as a possible American 'up and comer'. But this doesn't look good...

Posted by temes 07/02/2009 at 08:30 AM

Both ladies hitting very well, seems like will be a good match...however if Demmy gives Serena an opening she will run away with it.

Posted by Samantha Elin(supporter of all things Scandinavian.) 07/02/2009 at 08:31 AM

Damien: I read somewhere that Isner had mono for a while.

I have to correct spelling error to appear intelligent "disappear" !!!

Posted by TripleF-FedFanForever(Sergeant Pepper Fed's Second Reich!) 07/02/2009 at 08:36 AM

As American network television is bent on screwing up the live coverage, I find the build-up, the interviews, the montages and especially the compilation with music very entertaining.

Did I hear Oasis' "f'ing in the bushes" opening bars (what a driving sound that is) before Fed's (of course, glorious tape-delayed) match yesterday? I like.

Posted by Master Ace 07/02/2009 at 08:37 AM

Temes,
What browser are you using? IE8 was giving me some issues too until someone posted on how to resolve it. Another poster gave another solution to fix the Firefox issues. Ads are the current problem in loading TW.

Damien,
Isner lost to Ryan DeHeart, who played Rafael tough at USO last year. Also, John could not play Wimbledon as he had mono so Winnetka was his first tournament back.

Come on Serena, now break her. I love Demmy's dress. Go Caro, Scandinavia's#1, world's#9!

Posted by Cayman Karen (as defined by Ruth and Master Ace) 07/02/2009 at 08:38 AM

Good match so far. Serena seems to be very nervous though while LenaD seems very comfortable. I think Serena needs to relax a bit if she really wants to win this match because LenaD is looking very good right about now. Serving well and moving the ball well.

Posted by Bobby 07/02/2009 at 08:39 AM

Sokol, I feel exactly the same way. I didn't think Elena would be able to keep up this much. Of course Serena's not playing like she did against Azarenka, but it's still nice to seeing Elena not giving it away either.

Posted by Samantha Elin(supporter of all things Scandinavian.) 07/02/2009 at 08:39 AM

Demmy start DFing.

Posted by Damien 07/02/2009 at 08:40 AM

Ahhh... yes - it says on his Wikipedia entry that he withdrew from the French open because of mono. Thanks Ruth!

Posted by temes 07/02/2009 at 08:40 AM

MA, I use Firefox. What solution, do you have a link to it? It's okay if not, I'll try to find it.

Posted by TripleF-FedFanForever(Sergeant Pepper Fed's Second Reich!) 07/02/2009 at 08:40 AM

I think Serena came with a murderous intent. After that very first service game hiccup, she is now focusing. Once she takes this set (I am positive she would), a bagel awaits for Elena.

Posted by Annie (Heavenly Creature will be missed like no other) 07/02/2009 at 08:41 AM

Hi Temes! missed you. weird that your posts weren't showing up. hope that problem has passed.

so far the serena/demi match is very dull imho. hoping they're just loosening up.

Elena came to play today - down 0-40 with and came back. Serena is not going to be happy with herself about that one!

Posted by elenas 07/02/2009 at 08:43 AM

Sokol, Serena is a better matchup for Elena, Venus not so much.
Elena played Venus last year and she never stood a chance. Check that score. This one Elena can win

Regarding browser issues - I seem to have none of the problems that others are complaining about with Google Chrome. Except that it will hang/crash infrequently so I guess it's a trade off... I think it's the Java that is causing Chrome to crash on this site because it is unsupported in Chrome still. Though I don't understand why tennis.com uses Java to begin with (I could see it being used possibly for this typepad, but it even loads on the home page?)

Posted by Bobby 07/02/2009 at 08:44 AM

OK so I've decided that if Serena has the best return of serve, Elena may well have the best return of the return of serve. :) When she can recover quickly from her serve, she's attacking Serena's return of serve very well.

Posted by TennisFan2 07/02/2009 at 08:44 AM

Master Ace, it seems your 7-5/6 is accurate.

Posted by yello fuzzy 07/02/2009 at 08:44 AM

Demis serving 3-4
the serve is challenged,2nd serve, deep return forces the error 0-15
2nd serve, DF 0-30
DTL return forces an error 0-40
nice FH drive by Demi, forces Serena into an error 15-40
big serve down the middle 30-40
2nd serve, Demi hits a great FH DTL off the return, then inside out for a winner deuce
2nd serve, Serena sprays the FH going for too much ad in
Demi playing well , a long rally Demi breaks open the point by going DTL, Serena misses the CC

Elena needs to be do better in Serena's service games. Easier said than done, I know. Apart from that first game, when Elena broke, I don't think she's won a point when Serena's served (except one where I think Serena messed up of double-faulted)? Not good...

nice serving by Lena (I'm not watching the match, but for me every time Lena holds is good serving :-), plus no DFs...)

Ruth: maybe it's just me - does it seem that tennis players get mono/glandular fever more often than "ordinary" people?

Or maybe it's just that among the people I've met it's not usually discussed even if they've had it.

Superb match. Two women taking care of their serves and hitting a very clean ball. Well played.

I stand corrected. This chicky Elena has come to play some tennis. Very high quality tennis so far. Good stuff. Good stuff.

I have to say a very good match so far. Expected it though. Now we are down to the question of who has the better nerves as it looks like we may be heading for a tie break. Neither one of these ladies has played a tie break this tournie.
