The Lonely Coach (WCC, Day 12) 07/04/2009 - 8:26 AM

by Pete Bodo

Mornin', everyone, and a fine one it is again.

A few days ago, I had an interesting conversation with Sven Groeneveld, who heads up the novel and productive Adidas group coaching effort. Sven has coached an impressive list of outstanding players, including Mary Pierce, Michael Stich, Nathalie Dechy, Greg Rusedski, Fernando Verdasco and, most recently,  Ana Ivanovic. BTW, Ana is back with the Adidas program after a patchy experience with Craig Kardon (formerly Martina Navratilova's coach). And Darren Cahill has joined Gil Reyes, that other member of team Agassi, on the Adidas coaching roster. Those are Cahill, Reyes and Groeneveld (L to R) in this photo.

It turns out that Sven and our mutual friend, tennis insider Lisa Sommermeier, had both read the on-again, off-again series I started on coaching (it makes me think I ought to continue it), in which I wondered why tennis coaches - who run the gamut from manipulative opportunists with precious little to offer  to distinguished Grand Slam enablers - didn't have some kind of official organization, or registry. I can think of a dozen ways in which an official organization, like the players, tournaments, umpires, and even press already has (and let's not forget that strong organization of teaching pros, the USPTR), would be a welcome addition to the growing infrastructure of our sport.

It turns out that Sven had been thinking along the same lines, and he already has an interactive website that functions as a virtual employment agency for coaches. It's called Orangecoach.com. The big news Sven wanted to share with me is that this is merely Stage 1 of a 2 stage effort - the second part will consist of creating a formal organization or registry of coaches. It will not only help coaches and players find each other, but also give coaches, those lone operators, an organization that will set guidelines, create opportunities (like sponsorship deals), and give coaches the backing of the same kind of official, institutional voice that others can fall back on in times of need.

To pick a simple example, right now any charge of inappropriate behavior of any kind against a coach is simply a "he said, she/he said" affair, and who would want to be the coach in that scenario - especially if it were one of the all too common partnerships of a young female player and an older male coach?  Moreover, the WTA commitment to on-court coaching means that coaches could potentially supplement their income with sponsorship deals on a less haphazard basis. "I was never for the on-court coaching experiment," Sven told me. "But it's here and there's no reason not to take advantage of it."

Largely, though, Sven sees "job security" as the most critical issue for coaches. He points out that coaches come and go randomly, usually at the mercy of the players for whom they work. When that player retires, or moves on, the coach is back at Square One. He or she has no real way beyond networking and personal salesmanship of staying in the game. "Not too many coaches stay in the game for more than five years," Sven said. "I want to try to find a way to enable legitimate coaches to stay in the game. For example, if the player I've coached for three years decides to move on, right now I don't even have access to my workplace - the tournaments. If we had a certification process, the members of our registry could stay in the game and enjoy the same benefits as other tennis professionals."

A registry would also enable the organization to police its membership and even institutionalize the background checks that are a reasonable burden. Sven objected to the heavy-handed way the official game instituted its intrusive background checks in a panicked response to abuse and gambling scandals, but has no problem with the basic concept. "It would be part of a general certification process that would take place in stages," Sven said. "People would know what the system expects and get comfortable with it."

Sven also noted that academies, representation firms, and even manufacturers (like Adidas) have increasingly close ties to coaches, and use them in increasingly inventive and diverse wasy (as scouts, for example). The coaches need to be better informed on everything from the available opportunities to the general task-by-task pay scale.

I think this plan will work, partly because sponsors already have greater grasp of inventive ways to use coaches. The coaches are not only vital to the players on-court success, they're an increasingly significant go-between with other wings of the game, like the media. And a coach is a pipeline to a player. I've learned over time that if you have a good relationship with a player's coach, you're more likely to develop the same with a player.

I hope Sven pulls this off.

WTA Final Preview:

(A-1)Venus Williams vs (A-2)Serena Williams
Venus destroyed Dinara 6-1,6-0 in 51 minutes making only one error and to extend her set streak in singles to 35(57 if you count doubles as her and Serena blasted Black/Huber 6-1,6-2). Serena survived Elena Dementieva, who played the match of her career as her serve was working very well, as she saved match point with a backhand volley for a winner cutting off the cross court passing shot. Her serve returned at the right time serving 20 aces and unreturnable serves but her forehand was a liability. Will Serena be ready for the final after playing 2 hrs and 50 minutes?

Prediction : Venus Williams to 3-peat Wimbledon for the first time since Steffi Graf and collect her 6th Venus Rosewater Dish

WTA Doubles Final Preview:

(4)Serena Williams and Venus Williams vs (3)Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs.
Williams Sisters were playing at another level as they lost only 3 games to Cara Black and Liezel Huber. Now, they are trying for their 14th career title(9th Slam) in their career. Samantha and Rennae lost a tough tiebreaker in the first set to Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginie Ruano Pascual but they managed to turn the match around to win the last 2 sets comfortably denying Virginie a chance to win a Career Slam. They are trying to win their first title of any kind.

Prediction : Serena Williams and Venus Williams to successfully defend their doubles time winning their 4th Wimbledon title in the process.

BBC is replaying last year mens final. That was something! No roof added to the drama. At the end of the match Roger is so sad, sitting there all alone.

A great day for tennis, everyone. Good morning.

Keep your finger crossed for a Williams to win.

Keep Smiling

Morning, everyone. :) It was raining earlier but it's brightened up beautifully, and it's not too horribly hot, either - rather cold earlier in the day, really. Much nicer than the heatwave, though. :)

Interesting about the coaching scheme...

*adds vote for continuing the coaching series*

I'm so excited! I missed last year's final due to the Henley Regatta, and the need for an extra washer-upper on the Saturday. ;-) Hope this is a good match too...think I'd like Serena to win - although I like Venus more, I find it very hard not to root for Serena - for me, she's like Rafa in that respect.

And, what's not to like about two all-time greats battling it out in a Wimbledon final? LOL.

Probably disappearing to watch the match...enjoy, everyone. :)

Posted by elenas 07/04/2009 at 08:43 AM

Its not a full replay just a documentary of that final. The rain played a part in that final. Wonder what would have happened if they had a roof

Morning All. Happy 4th of July to my American TWibers. I am thinking Venus will 3 peat as well. Watching TC match between Davenport and Mary Pierce. Man Davenport was pretty chubby back then

Posted by Samantha Elin(supporter of all things Scandinavian.) 07/04/2009 at 08:51 AM

I'm going to be cheering for Venus, Serena can win any slam but the FO. Venus needs this win more. Go Vee. Go Roddick. All American on the fourth of July. Anybody think Roddick has a chance, Demmy surprised us so you never know. I just have a feeling Roger was glad to see Roddick come through. I LOVE tennis, best sport in the world!! Go Caro, Scandinavia's#1!

Posted by VE 07/04/2009 at 08:52 AM

Strangely enough, this is my first time posting during the Championships. I think he more tennis action there is, the less active I am here. I'm all over the place during Indian Wells, but I'm MIA during Wimbledon, go figure.

Anyway, I'm picking Serena today, by sheer force of will, to grab her 11th Grand Slam title. 7-5 6-4

'morning all!

Great article and great idea.

Posted by Samantha Elin(supporter of all things Scandinavian.) 07/04/2009 at 08:54 AM

I enjoy the WS final and appreciate how rare it is to see two great champions from the same family. Never say never, but it will be a longtime before tennis produces two sisters going for so many important tourney. I hope they stick around for a long time.

Great Post Pete, interesting to have a group of coaches as part of a overall team.Though I would prefer myself to have a one on one.
Though I wouldnt mind having Gil Reyes as my trainer.

Well I hope Miss vee will hold up that winning trophy. For I feel she has had a great tournament so far.Playing Serena will never be a given she will have the hardest test.

Good luck to both players.

Posted by Ross 07/04/2009 at 08:59 AM

I watched Andy-Andy on NBC from first point to last w/o knowing the result. What discipline! Try it sometime guys!
Now I read Fed's got it in the bag. Some guys never learn; even after this year of astonishment.

Posted by Christopher 07/04/2009 at 08:59 AM

To follow up on what Samantha said, let's just contemplate the phenomenal achievements of Venus, Serena, Oracene, and Richard. Two of the greatest tennis players of all time, who are also sane, intelligent adults (that must be from their mother's side). I still remember when Richard first said that his daughters would one day be playing each other in grand slam finals. I thought he was off his rocker. He may have been, but he was also right. Amazing.

Go Venus!

Poor V, her knee bandaged and Serena with that I'm going to kick your butt face on. Go V, you can do it!

Posted by Bobby 07/04/2009 at 09:05 AM

Master Ace, I agree completely: I think Venus will win. She's been playing better the whole tournament. The only time I thought Serena had a chance was when she dismantled Azarenka in the quarterfinals. Interestingly though the oddsmakers gave Serena an edge the whole two weeks -- until after the semifinals. It should be a good match, because you never know what Serena can do. That's her main strength? :) Most of all I hope it's a good match.

Posted by Mr. X 07/04/2009 at 09:08 AM

Hi everyone.
Ready to go, as the sisters are already on the court.
I think Venus will win, but i must admit i lean more towards Serena, because i just love players who have that unstoppable will to win.

Hello to everyone!!

Excited, happy, and a little nervous for the ladies! I can't pick one or the other; they both are superb tennis players and the best one on the day will win. I'll feel happy for one and sad for the other. (I really do hope that Venus' knee wrap is only for support.)

Have a great day!!

I think Venus is better but against Serena that means vey little.

Serena is attacking Venus f/hand already.though i must say Venus f/hand side has been great so far in this tournament.

Posted by Annie (Heavenly Creature wimby was not the same without you) 07/04/2009 at 09:15 AM

AM: sounds like the girls didn't want stepmom in the box today?

Posted by Master Ace 07/04/2009 at 09:15 AM

Venus Williams serving to start the match with Serena Williams

0-15 Venus DF

Posted by elenas 07/04/2009 at 09:15 AM

Venus leads 1-0

Posted by Mr. X 07/04/2009 at 09:16 AM

Venus holds at 30 to start the match. There were some nerves in that game by both players, as Venus didnt get many 1st serves in, started with a DF, and Serena ended the game with 2 missed returns and an ugly UFE

Posted by Master Ace 07/04/2009 at 09:17 AM

15-0 Serena Ace wide
30-0 Serena FH winner DTL
40-0 Venus BH return wide
Serena holds as Venus nets BH return

Venus to serve 1-all

Posted by Mr. X 07/04/2009 at 09:18 AM

Serena serves better than Venus did and holds at love. Venus still hasnt gotten into the match. Serena completely dominated that game.

Posted by Cayman Karen (as defined by Ruth and Master Ace) 07/04/2009 at 09:19 AM

starting out Serena's serve looks stronger. Return is still crap. Venus is better off the ground right now. Should be a good match.

Posted by Master Ace 07/04/2009 at 09:19 AM

15-0 Venus BH winner
30-0 Serena nets FH return
40-0 Serena BH return long
Venus holds as she hit service winner

Serena to serve 1-2

Posted by yello fuzzy 07/04/2009 at 09:19 AM

Vees serve is impressive so far.....

Posted by Mr. X 07/04/2009 at 09:20 AM

After abgood first point by Venus, Serena misses 2 consecutive returns, trying to be extremely agressive. Venus holds at love closing the game with an ace and sh'e up 2-1.

Posted by TennisFan2 07/04/2009 at 09:21 AM

Go USA Tennis!!! All Williams final, Williams Sister Doubles final and Andy Roddick in the men's final - yippee!!!

I'd like to say I'm happy with either sister winning but I'd really like to see Vee take a seat with the greats with six titles and a 3-peat.

Posted by Master Ace 07/04/2009 at 09:24 AM

15-0 Serena FH passing winner as Venus came to net but did not do enough with volley
30-0 Serena Ace wide
40-0 Venus FH long
40-15 Serena nets FH
Serena holds as she aces wide

Venus to serve 2-all

Mr. X,
Did Serena get a racquet on the last pt in Venus last service game?

Posted by elenas 07/04/2009 at 09:24 AM

Has Richard ever watched them play each other? or is this a new thing for him to go home. I heard he went home last year as well

Posted by Mr. X 07/04/2009 at 09:25 AM

Serena holds at 15 to get to 2-2. She hit 2 aces in that game. Also, there was the best point of the match so far, with Venus coming to the net, but failing to end the point and Serena passing her.

Posted by Master Ace 07/04/2009 at 09:27 AM

Linesperson called ball out but umpire said replay pt as ball was in
15-0 Venus BH winner
15-15 Venus nets FH
30-15 Serena nets BH return
40-15 Serena nets FH return
Venus holds as Serena BH return sails long

Serena to serve 2-3

Link is faster than NBC Online

Posted by Bobby 07/04/2009 at 09:28 AM

So far they're both serving well, but it's been a bit boring. I want them to serve well, but I want to see some rallies too. Is that so wrong? :)

Posted by Mr. X 07/04/2009 at 09:28 AM

Maybe she did, Master Ace. If not an ace, an unreturnable.
Wow, the court looks bad in the areas where there's no grass.
Venus holds at 15, after 3 consecutive serves that Serena didnt return. She's up 3-2.

Posted by Matt Zemek 07/04/2009 at 09:29 AM

Still feeling their way through it.

Waiting for the first break point that will shake loose the match and get the juices flowing.

As it is, a mature match from the servers, and I love seeing two women who know how to protect a serve and make it stand up. (That's a huge reason why Serena-Demmy was such a special match.)

Posted by Annie (Heavenly Creature wimby was not the same without you) 07/04/2009 at 09:31 AM

Posted by temes 07/04/2009 at 09:31 AM

Damn Damn Damn I missed the start! Oh well seems like it will be a great match! Goo Rena! Lol at the scoreboard showing only "Venus/Serena" and no last names.

Posted by Master Ace 07/04/2009 at 09:31 AM

15-0 Serena steps inside the court and hit FH too hot for Venus
30-0 Venus nets FH as Serena put depth on her FH
40-0 Serena Ace at the T
Serena holds as Venus FH sails wide

Venus to serve 3-all

Posted by Lynne (Rafalite) 07/04/2009 at 09:31 AM

Good morning all,

Happy 4th July to all US TWibers!! I honestly don't mind which sister wins today, Venus is the queen of grass but if Serena wins, then I will be very happy. Either way, I'm looking forward to a great match.

Posted by Mr. X 07/04/2009 at 09:32 AM

Bobby, not wrong at all. And yeah, the match lacks excitement so far, but it has only started. Let's hope it gets better.
Both ladies are dominating their serve games, as Serena holds at love again to get to 3-3. She hit another ace in that game, and some hard grounstrokes that Venus couldnt handle.

Posted by Matt Zemek 07/04/2009 at 09:32 AM

Venus looking a little gimpy after the first point of game 7.

Posted by Tfactor 07/04/2009 at 09:32 AM

Posted by Master Ace 07/04/2009 at 09:35 AM

0-15 Serena FH winner as she kept Venus on the run
15-15 Venus FH winner on short Serena return
30-15 Serena nets BH
40-15 Venus Ace wide
Venus holds as she hit service winner at Serena's body

Serena to serve 3-4

MaryC said their dad doesn't like to watch them play each other that it's like watching your kids fight.

Venus holds for 4-3

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 07/04/2009 at 09:35 AM

For anyone starting out in the game of tennis just watch how both girls have great early preparation of their shots on the ball.

Just perfect.

Posted by Matt Zemek 07/04/2009 at 09:35 AM

15-all point proved decisive in that game. Serena dictating, but not able to drill one more backhand. Venus fed off that mini-escape and served bombs to hold.

Posted by Mr. X 07/04/2009 at 09:36 AM

Venus holds at 15 to go up 4-3. 3 of the points were won thanks to a good serve. In the other 2, there were rallies that i feel Serena dominated, moving her sister around. But the problem is Venus can get to more balls than the other girls, so Serena ended making an UFE in one of those long, agressive rallies

Posted by avid sports fan aka "Sigh-Rena" 07/04/2009 at 09:36 AM

yes she saved them. phew! no pls hold!

Posted by skip1515 07/04/2009 at 09:40 AM

Pete, this is a good idea. The aspect that would give certified coaches access to tournaments when they're currently unemployed is a step towards making the whole process of getting a coach, and being one, both easier and more on the up and up. All of which would only be good for the game.

There is the question of recruiting coaches to recruit players, which is a little more of a potential minefield. I recently became aware of The Tennis Recruiting Network (http://www.tennisrecruiting.net), which provides a kind of over/under on top, middle and lesser juniors. I understand the need from a purely commercial perspective, but it has a potentially seemy side, too, no?

Posted by Master Ace 07/04/2009 at 09:40 AM

0-15 Serena BH wide after Venus come in on FH approach
0-30 Serena BH wide after Venus returned 2nd serve at her feet
15-30 Serena service winner at the T
15-40 Serena nets FH
30-40 Venus BH return wide
So far, Serena missed 3 first serves
40-40 Venus FH passing shot long as Serena came to net on short Venus return

Venus to serve 4-all

Posted by Samantha Elin(supporter of all things Scandinavian.) 07/04/2009 at 09:40 AM

Darn V, she should have got that break.

Posted by Tfactor 07/04/2009 at 09:40 AM

Serena stepped it up with the serve to hold for 4 all

Posted by Mr. X 07/04/2009 at 09:40 AM

And Serena holds to get to 4-4. Venus lost a agreat opportunity there, as she had 2 BPs: in the first Serena's 2nd serve on the line surprised her, but in the second She had a passing with all the court open and sent it long. From deuce, Serena hit 2 aces and won the game.

Posted by Matt Zemek 07/04/2009 at 09:42 AM

Good mental game for Venus, not allowing that blown break point to affect her subsequent service game.

Posted by Angel of the Surf (Kuzzy 2009 FO Champion) 07/04/2009 at 09:44 AM

hi everyone especially folks in the United States. Hope you are enjoying the beginning of 4th July celebrations.

Great the match has started and in Australia it is on delayed so I am stuck with the first Harry Potter movie. This is the first year I haven't watched the final live. Really don't care who wins.

Posted by Mr. X 07/04/2009 at 09:44 AM

Venus holds at 15 to go up 5-4. In the last 2 games, it was Venus who was more agressive and kept dominating the rallies with her grounstrokes. At one point, she had Serena running like crazy from one corner of the court to the other. She also kept winning some easy points with her serve, which both players are doing in every single game.

Posted by tommy 07/04/2009 at 09:46 AM

I like when they play Wimbledon finals. Venus had a good look at a break and hit it long. If Serena wins the title, that one shot might be why

Posted by Master Ace 07/04/2009 at 09:47 AM

15-0 Serena FH winner on short Venus BH return
30-0 Venus nets FH
30-15 Venus BH return hit the tape and bounced over for the winner
40-15 Venus FH long
Serena holds as she hit FH winner DTL

Venus to serve 5-all

Posted by Mr. X 07/04/2009 at 09:48 AM

Serena holds at 15 to get to 5-5, closing with a great FH DTL winner. She did very well in that game, following her good serves with agressive shots to dominate the points. Venus's only point was a lucky netcord.

Vee always uses this body serve for ReRe. she did it last year. I think ReRe should move back a bit to receive the first serve although the negative to that is that Vee will probably then dictate the rally from there on. But I think it is a risk worth taking.

ReRe please hold and take this to a TB.

Serena f/hand has gone astray a bit,she had a look on Venus 2nd serve her f/hand went wild.

V needs to come to the net and attack Serena's forehand. Get off the baseline and make it a net game. Serena hates the net. Go V!

Venus holds after having some trouble, and she's up 6-5. There were a couple of deuces in that game, due to some UFEs by Venus, but 2 unreturned serves later, Venus was able to hold. The intensity of play raised in that game, but there wasnt much precision.

Impossible to tell who has the edge as the conclusion of the set approaches. Good nerves by Venus, but oh, she'll have her nerves tested in the next 10 minutes.

Remember the '08 US Open quarters, Vee...........
