Montreal Crisis Center, Day 4 08/13/2009 - 11:23 AM

89763228

Well, it wasn't the stiffest test for Rafael Nadal's battered knee, but his first official match since his hiatus from the tour re-etablished his W tradition. I have a few meetings this morning, so that's it for now. You know what to do. . .

I'm at work, and unable to watch Roddick/Verdasco. If anyone wants to match call, that would be appreciated.

Benefit of the doubt, maybe?

*shrug*

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 01:07 PM

TB
Come on, Flavia!

Posted by JohnC 08/13/2009 at 01:08 PM

hanescu to stay in the match at 5-3

Posted by CL 08/13/2009 at 01:10 PM

Aw...boo. I mean good for Novak that he won, but I was really hoping for a Youz resurgence. He is really fun to watch when playing well. And not clonking himself on the head with his racket.

Posted by tennisesq. 08/13/2009 at 01:11 PM

Ok a million errors coming from Vee in the TB. Pffft.

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 01:11 PM

Flavia is 4-1 in TB (at least that's what my SB shows) Come on!

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 01:11 PM

Call me old-fashioned but I love to see the players in white.
2 thumbs up to Verdasco, and good luck to both. I am totally conflicted here but will be happy whoever wins.

Sometimes when a player does Have a niggling injury and his down in their match say mentally they get a break like the Elf did,it lifts you.

Thats what Robbie was saying.

Posted by Babe 08/13/2009 at 01:12 PM

Well, there goes the 1st set. Awful tie break--the minute she started tentatively I knew which way it was going.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:13 PM

Okay. Vamos Andy!

Black Matt: I can give you updates for a while but have to leave for work soon. Someone will probably take over though. :)

Posted by Babe 08/13/2009 at 01:13 PM

Oh great--now Vera is down set point.

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 08/13/2009 at 01:13 PM

Look at the stats the Elf has lost 1 point on serve in the 3rd set

Posted by tennisesq. 08/13/2009 at 01:13 PM

It is soooooooooooooooooo hard to root for Venus when she plays like this. Makes me want to jump ship sometimes.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:13 PM

Roddick to serve...

Posted by JohnC 08/13/2009 at 01:13 PM

My Elf stream has died, but I presume he will now serve out the match from 5-4.

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 08/13/2009 at 01:14 PM

Ok make that 2 now lol!

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:14 PM

Good Lord-looked away for 2 secs and it is 30-0.

Posted by CL 08/13/2009 at 01:14 PM

don't give Verdasco much of a shot against Roddick. Andy's playing well and Hott Sauce, (The tennis player formerly known as Smurf Hawk.), really has struggled since his great AO run. He hasn't come close to showing that kind of form since then, IMO. Injuries have played a part to be sure...but its not just injuries..

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 01:14 PM

Flavia with the first set.

anyone knows how would you say "Come on!" in Italian?

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:15 PM

Nando hit it into the net after a bit of a rally-40-0. And Andy wins it with an ace.

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 08/13/2009 at 01:15 PM

The elf wins the 3rd set 6-4

Posted by Cayman Karen (as defined by Ruth and Master Ace) and Bring on the FedTwins - 2 many names 08/13/2009 at 01:15 PM

tennisesq, me and you both. Sometimes it looks like the only time to be a Venus fan is during Wimbledon. She is so freaking inconsistent. She plays good one match, the next match is like her evil twin takes over and she is over and done. 2 freaking points in the tiebreak, cannot break serve, and just keeps hitting the ball over the baseline. She is playing like she is a newbie and not a seasoned veteran on the Tour. Ridiculous

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 01:15 PM

Vamos, Fernando!

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:16 PM

Congrats Carrie, Gauloises and other Elf fans!

Commies to fans of Hanescu.

Andy hits it out and Nando goes 15-0

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 01:16 PM

Great for JMDP and fans! He wins 3-6, 6-3. 6-4
Hanescu played well but was not able to keep up once JMDP's serves started to click.

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 01:16 PM

Congrats to Del Potro. Nadal-DelPo will be interesting...

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:16 PM

Nice forehand by Hott Sauce. 30-0.

Nando hits it out...30-15

Posted by Babe 08/13/2009 at 01:17 PM

This is why Venus has a hard time winning anything off of grass--she's so unsteady. It's like she gets nervous & all her strokes disappear. She is simply gift-wrapping this match to Pennetta.

Posted by Or 08/13/2009 at 01:17 PM

Roddick seriously needs to win and show up to meet Djoko, that should be quite a cracker.

Posted by TennisFan3 08/13/2009 at 01:17 PM

rafadoc: What did Darren Cahill say about Nadal? He should know because he had the same problem.

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 01:17 PM

another TB for ladies, for Vera and Dani this time. Davai, Vera!

Posted by karin1492 08/13/2009 at 01:17 PM

sokol: The words you are looking for are "forzi Pennetta!"

Posted by Cayman Karen (as defined by Ruth and Master Ace) and Bring on the FedTwins - 2 many names 08/13/2009 at 01:17 PM

If the stats are any indication, she has won 5 points on her second serve. In her first match, she did not even hit a double fault and she won most of the points on her second serve. This match, it is like phewt, plus I hate that damn dress she has on.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:17 PM

Ace for Verdasco so it is 1-1

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 08/13/2009 at 01:18 PM

doesn't Rafa need to actually win the next match before he'll get to play Elfie? Not a given...*frazzles*

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 01:18 PM

Andy/Nando 1 all.

Murray & JCF up next on BN

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 01:19 PM

Not a given...*frazzles*"

Not a given at all. It's going to be tough.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:19 PM

TennisFan3: They really didn't say a lot about Rafa...just good to see him back and they actually implied he played well last night. (maybe they just watched the few highlights that included a couple of nice FHs). :)

30-15 Roddick.

Posted by tennisesq. 08/13/2009 at 01:20 PM

Come on Venus. Venga!

Posted by Azhdaja 08/13/2009 at 01:20 PM

Raf vs DelPo...and Delpo is gonna win it comfortably!

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 01:20 PM

thank you, karin1492

forzi Pennetta!

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 08/13/2009 at 01:21 PM

Karen I have always said,I would like Vee to use her great transition game on the h/courts like she does on grass,I really feel if she did that more it may help her game and be more consistant on h/court surface. She has won the US OPEN though a while ago now.

Posted by Jenni 08/13/2009 at 01:21 PM

Oh for heaven's sake. I'm sure Flavia is doing more than just standing there filing her nails and watching the UFEs fly by her head.

Vera, Vera, Vera. You're killing me here.

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 01:21 PM

AndyR holds at 15
Nando to serve 1-2

Posted by Black Matt 08/13/2009 at 01:22 PM

Thanks, Rafadoc!

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 01:22 PM

Vera with 5 DFs in this set... no DFs for Dani...

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 01:22 PM

Rafa sighting! Looking quite serious while eating.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:22 PM

Rafa sighting...chewing on his lunch. Nice words from the commentators. :)

Posted by Babe 08/13/2009 at 01:23 PM

"plus I hate that damn dress she has on."

Me 2; me freakin 2!

Posted by CL 08/13/2009 at 01:23 PM

Now we know why Queen Elizabeth never allows herself to be shown eating. lol.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:24 PM

You are welcome Black Matt.

Nando using the whole court. 30-0

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 08/13/2009 at 01:24 PM

Looks like the Chick Magnet is either needing a hiarcut or is growing his hair, always hiding it under that cap.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:24 PM

An Ace from Nando who, oh my, does look nice in white. Ahem 40-0

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:24 PM

followed by a DF...40-15

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:25 PM

After a bit of a rally, Nando wins the game.

2-2, Andy to serve.

Posted by Daniel 08/13/2009 at 01:25 PM

"Raf vs DelPo...and Delpo is gonna win it comfortably!"

I don't know about that, I'm a big Elf fan but he isn't playing well, and today he acussed a back injury, I think Rafa is the favorite to win that match.

Posted by Mr Rick 08/13/2009 at 01:26 PM

"Rafa sighting...chewing on his lunch. Nice words from the commentators. :)"

Oh really - they probably accused him of STEALING his lunch

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:26 PM

Nice BH volley by Andy to win that point. 15-0

Posted by tennisesq. 08/13/2009 at 01:26 PM

Caymen Karen,
Venus needs to ditch the yellow dress. It's the AO curse.

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 08/13/2009 at 01:26 PM

Jenni Calm down please. You have her Highness came to look forward to.

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 01:26 PM

Commentators talked about the possibility of Rafa losing his #2 ranking to Murray even after winning a slam and 3 masters this year.
2 all AndyR& Nando

Posted by TennisFan3 08/13/2009 at 01:26 PM

Thanks Rafadoc.

Mr. Rick-lol.

30-15 as Andy serves an ace.

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 08/13/2009 at 01:27 PM

oops should have read game not came, hey its 3.30am here

Posted by Cayman Karen (as defined by Ruth and Master Ace) and Bring on the FedTwins - 2 many names 08/13/2009 at 01:27 PM

Jenni, I am by no means implying that Flavia is not doing her job. The problem is that from the little I have seen on the court so far, Venus is just making errors after errors for no discernible reason other than she seems to be having an off day. I know that Flavia can beat Venus, but for today I would like my fave to be victorious hence my being quite upset at the number of errors etc. I am sure that you can relate when your faves are not playing well.
@AM - I understand what you are saying about her transition game, but it is like she has no confidence to use it on the hardcourts. Just really bizarre.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:27 PM

Andy mishits on the passing shot attempt. 40-15

Posted by tennisesq. 08/13/2009 at 01:27 PM

After hitting a beautiful drop volley, Venus hits an ugly bh.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:27 PM

Another ace for Andy. 3-2

Posted by linex 08/13/2009 at 01:28 PM

Congrats to Elf´s fans Carrie, Gal, Angel et al.

He improved his game quite a lot in the second and third sets. The first set was just a disaster. He is learning to win even when he is playing below his best which is a plus.

Looking forward to Kolya Feña.

Nole played well for what I saw, being under the radar may help him in this tournament. He is always dangerous in this surface and will get better round by round.

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 08/13/2009 at 01:28 PM

Karen Well the only way to gain confidence is to try it more.

Posted by Jenni 08/13/2009 at 01:28 PM

Oh right, AM. I'm sure that will be a nice, soothing experience. If she comes out in a mustard colored outfit, though, I reserve the right to start drinking heavily. :)

Posted by Mr Rick 08/13/2009 at 01:29 PM

"Commentators talked about the possibility of Rafa losing his #2 ranking to Murray even after winning a slam and 3 masters this year."

tFactor - what the commentators are really trying to say is that if Murray doesn't watch out, Rafa will STEAL the #2 ranking away from him

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 01:29 PM

Vera DFs on SP and Dani takes the set 10-8( based on my SB) :-(((
still, Davai, Vera!

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:30 PM

Nando finding the lines...15-0

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 01:31 PM

Mr Rick
LOL

Murray serving to start the match against Ferrero

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:31 PM

40-0 Hott Sauce

Posted by tennisesq. 08/13/2009 at 01:31 PM

No one said Flavia was just filing her nails.

I'm more concerned with the Venus side of the court. But fact is Flavia is benefitting from Venus's errors, big time. It helped Flavia win the TB.

Go Dani!

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:32 PM

Love hold for Verdasco. 3-3

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 01:32 PM
