Montreal Crisis Center, Day 4 08/13/2009 - 11:23 AM

89763228

Well, it wasn't the stiffest test for Rafael Nadal's battered knee, but his first official match since his hiatus from the tour re-etablished his W tradition. I have a few meetings this morning, so that's it for now. You know what to do. . .

Verdasco nets his shot...back to Deuce.

Posted by Bill 08/13/2009 at 01:38 PM

more injuries- unbelievable

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:39 PM

AD Roddick as Fernando misfires.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:40 PM

Passing shot by Verdasco as Andy comes to the net. Deuce

Whatev carnap...stay at your own annoyance.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:40 PM

AD Andy again. Come on dude.

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 01:41 PM

Carnap,
Thanks again. Like I usually tell my husband, the harder you try the worse you make it. Anyway, I'm sure others appreciate our efforts ;-)

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:41 PM

Verdasco hits out and Roddick holds for 4-3, on serve in the first set.

Posted by Master Ace 08/13/2009 at 01:41 PM

TWibe,
Thanks to all for the updates so far. Please keep up the good work.

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 01:42 PM

That was a good hold for Roddick.

Meanwhile Juan Carlos is having a tough time holding his first serve game

Posted by greenhopper 08/13/2009 at 01:42 PM

The more you pay attention they more the instigators will love it.
Ignoremania.

Thanks for the match calls, Tfactor and r'doc.

Posted by lollipop 08/13/2009 at 01:42 PM

aw, man so verdasco's not able to break. Roddick has a tough hold, but is successful in drawing the error from 'nando.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:43 PM

Thanks MA :) Kind words are appreciated.

Posted by Black Matt 08/13/2009 at 01:43 PM

Man, this is why scoreboard watching sucks. In my imagination, Roddick kept hitting good first serves that Verdasco kept clobbering for return winners. Andy barely gets out alive. Verdasco smells blood. Roddick is already smashing racquets and yelling at the umpire.

But of course, I have no idea what is actually happening :)

Am I right in thinking, rafadoc, that Verdasco is looking like the better player right now?

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 01:43 PM

Thanks Master Ace! ;)
JCF takes quite some time to serve

Posted by Master Ace 08/13/2009 at 01:44 PM

Cincinnati
Pennetta leads V Williams 7-6(2),4-3
Hantuchova leads Zvonareva 7-6(8),0-3

Montreal
Djokovic over Youzhny 6-3,6-4
Del Potro over Hanescu 3-6,6-3,6-4
Roddick on serve with Verdasco 4-3
Murray on serve with Ferrero 1-0

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:44 PM

Thanks GH. :)

Back from commercial break and Nando is up 30-0.

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 01:44 PM

"I'm sure others appreciate our efforts ;-)"

I am :-)) keep all those updates. My SB on the men's side is dead, so relying on the updates from TW

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:44 PM

Nice ROS from Andy and Verdasco nets the response. 30-15

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 08/13/2009 at 01:45 PM

I thought Carnap was being tongue in cheek, a bit...

*echoing match call/score keeping thanks to everyone providing*

And I'm out for a while, later, everyone. :)

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 01:45 PM

Murray breaks to go up 2 love

Posted by Jalen 08/13/2009 at 01:46 PM

Venus, I don't know what to say about her inconsistencies. The great thing about Venus is she competes no matter what the score. Come on Venus!

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 01:46 PM

Come on, Andy! (Murray, that is)

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:46 PM

Thanks Sokol. :)

Black Matt: Yep. Verdasco seems to be finding the lines and is just a bit more in control. Andy is not looking bad though.

30-0

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:47 PM

40-0 Andy serving...

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 01:47 PM

I thought so too, but then again I'm often wrong :)

Thanks for the appreciation Greenhopper and Sokol

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 01:47 PM

Vera is 3-0 in the second set. Come on, Vera, don't give the break back...

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:47 PM

Comfortable hold for Andy 5-4 on serve.

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 01:48 PM

Murray holds easily for 3 love

Posted by CherryNYC 08/13/2009 at 01:48 PM

Andy holds 5-4. I sense this is going to be a good one. Barely recognize Sauce in a cap.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:48 PM

Bye Jewell!

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 01:49 PM

"Andy serving"

Rafadoc, with 2 Andys in action can you, please, let us know if it's Andy R or Andy M?

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:49 PM

Verdasco to serve...

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:50 PM

sokol: Understand the confusion! Sorry! Will go with RAndy.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:50 PM

Great court coverage by both but Randy comes out the winner. 15-0

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 01:50 PM

thank you, Rafadoc

Posted by greenhopper 08/13/2009 at 01:51 PM

Damn. What a rally! Who knew Roddick could defend like this? on his bh wing no less. 4-5, 0-15, Nando

Posted by manuelsantanafan 08/13/2009 at 01:51 PM

If Murray serves well, Juanqui probably doesn't have much of a chance.

Ferrero's serve not strong enuf to keep Murray from challenging it most games.

I've only seen a few points, and Murray has already hit a couple of backhand winners.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:51 PM

Verdasco hits 115 MPH serve and it is 30-15

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 01:51 PM

Sokol thanks for the WTA updates.

Nice match between Roddick and Verdasco. Right now the better match.
Murray is dominating Ferrero.

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 01:52 PM

Vera with double break in the second set... will serve at 4-0
DAVAI!

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:52 PM

Nice serving by Verdasco. 5-5, on serve. RAndy to serve now. TB anyone?

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:53 PM

Nice winner by Verdasco. 0-15

Posted by CherryNYC 08/13/2009 at 01:53 PM

really good serving from Sauce. 5-5 I sense TB

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 01:53 PM

"RAndy to serve now. TB anyone?"

I would prefer Nando breaking here :-)
Vamos!

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:53 PM

15-15. RAndy serving...

Posted by Master Ace 08/13/2009 at 01:54 PM

Match calls from the ATP are appreciated.

Rafadoc,
If you are watching on ESPN2, who are their commentary team and what are they saying?

From reading the comments, I am not surprised that Venus is making errors as Flavia is an aggressive counterpuncher that defends well and is aggressive when the opportunity is there. She defeated Maria in Los Angels with this approach.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:54 PM

Forehand long by RAndy...15-30

Posted by Master Ace 08/13/2009 at 01:55 PM

Welcome to the Top 10, Flavia Pennetta. First Italian to acheive the feat.

Posted by greenhopper 08/13/2009 at 01:55 PM

Flavia sets up double MPs with a bh dtl winner.
Venus hits a fh just long, and it's Flavia in 2 sets.
7-6(2) 6-4.
Very happy for her.
Sorry, Vee fans.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:56 PM

MA: Fowler and Cahill with Gillbert on the sidelines. They are saying its a great match. Ponder about Verdasco's occasional service "yips" which aren't really a factor today, IMO

Andy holds for 6-5

Posted by tennisesq. 08/13/2009 at 01:56 PM

Congrats to Flavia for winning a match just standing there filing her nails.

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 01:56 PM

Rafadoc, you're doing a wonderful job. I am watching both matches but paying more attention to Roddick/Verdasco which is higher quality IMO.

Again JCF having a tough time holding. He's yet to get on the board

Posted by Master Ace 08/13/2009 at 01:56 PM

Flavia Pennetta defeated Venus Williams 7-6(2),6-4

Posted by karin1492 08/13/2009 at 01:56 PM

I wanted to pick Pennetta in an upset, but I was too chicken. Nice win by Pennetta who is continuing in her fine form. I actually like her chances to make it at least to the semis.

Posted by CherryNYC 08/13/2009 at 01:56 PM

great serves from RAndy. holds for 6-5. Compared to the interminable Djoker service ritual, these 2 move quick.

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 01:57 PM

Vera served Dani a bagel in the second set... Come on, Vera, continue in the third with the bakery, if possible :-)

I wonder if that's Hantuchova who fell apart after the first set or Vera picked up her level... for some reason I think the first is more probable...

Posted by tennisesq. 08/13/2009 at 01:57 PM

Bring on Kim and Sveta.

Posted by Cayman Karen (as defined by Ruth and Master Ace) and Bring on the FedTwins - 2 many names 08/13/2009 at 01:57 PM

OK, you heard it here first. I will not cheer for Venus unless it is at Wimbledon. My poor heart cannot take it anymore. I hope to God this is not the match that TC plans to show later today. Just errors everywhere. Congrats to Flavia and her fans. Venus, take off that freaking lemon custard dress, put on a white one and go find your game. Ridiculous.

Posted by Black Matt 08/13/2009 at 01:57 PM

A sudden, random break of serve would be great here, Andy :)

Judging by the numbers, Roddick hasn't even touched Verdasco's serve so far.

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 01:57 PM

Finally JCF holds.
AndyM to serve 3-1

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:57 PM

After this set, I will need to go. Can GH, CherryNYC or Tfactor continue match calls?

Fernando to serve for the TB opportunity.

Posted by lollipop 08/13/2009 at 01:58 PM

Cherry NYC- very true. Today especially, nole was taking a lot of time between serves, almost to an annoying level.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:58 PM

Fernando duffs a volley into the net. 0-15

Posted by Master Ace 08/13/2009 at 01:58 PM

Rafadoc,
Thanks for letting me know that Chris Fowler is back from "vacation". Now, he is getting ready for the college football season. Guess Cliff Drysdale, Mary Jo Fernandez, and Pam Shriver will do Cincinnati.

"Welcome to the Top 10, Flavia Pennetta"

+1

"First Italian to acheive the feat"

glad for her

Congrats to Flavis on her win.

I'm a little worried about Vera facing Flavia, but, first, she has to get through her match...

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 01:59 PM

You are welcome MA.

Looked away and it is 15-15.

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 02:00 PM

Sorry Karen. I feel your pain.
Good win for Flavia.

Posted by Jenni 08/13/2009 at 02:00 PM

tennisesq, my comment was mostly directed at the 'gift-wrapped' comment, as I believe credit should be given when due. Genuine commiserations to you and the rest of the Venus fans.

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 02:00 PM

TB time.

Posted by federerfan 08/13/2009 at 02:00 PM

Ed/Samantha are going to have to correct themselves when the next MNP comes out, Penetta just beat a williams sister in straights on hards

Posted by CherryNYC 08/13/2009 at 02:00 PM

lollipop -- "almost annoying" is very generous of you. It drives me completely nuts.

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 02:01 PM

Murray holds without trouble for 4-1

Roddick and Verdasco to begin TB

Posted by rafadoc 08/13/2009 at 02:01 PM

Gotta run! Tag teaming others who are doing match calls! Thanks in advance!! Vamos Andy ;)

Posted by greenhopper 08/13/2009 at 02:01 PM

Blah. Very nice rally ends with a tough-ish fh volley miss from Nando. He hits (inside out) fh winner #9, 2 big serves, and a fh I/I winner to take this to a TB.

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 08/13/2009 at 02:02 PM

Congrats to Flavia she keeps her wining ways from her most recent final win.

Miss Vee too many u/errors cost you the game.bad luck.

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 02:03 PM

Roddick in control of the TB 4-0

Posted by CherryNYC 08/13/2009 at 02:03 PM

oh, Sauce, what was that? RAndy 3-0

Posted by Master Ace 08/13/2009 at 02:03 PM

Flavia Pennetta has won her last 14 matches since Wimbledon winning Palermo and Los Angeles in the process. Will she go far in the USOpen and will she be an Ace seed? Hint, if Flavia wins Cincinnati, she will be an Ace seed regardless of what she does in Toronto next week(she will be on a 17 match win streak at that time).

Posted by CherryNYC 08/13/2009 at 02:04 PM

Should have let that bounce, Sauce! Dumb. RAndy 5-0

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 08/13/2009 at 02:04 PM

I cannot believe how Larry has turned Andy into a decent volley player.Like that last point,he picked up that volley, gee i year ago he would not have made it.

Posted by Aube 08/13/2009 at 02:04 PM

Venus,Venus,Venus...Hope this coming weeks help you keep the baal inside the lines, too many out out out...my ear is hurting...
Good job Flavia,I guess you are on a winning streak also, keep on...

Posted by greenhopper 08/13/2009 at 02:05 PM

Nando misses a fh on the run. 1-0, Roddick.
Nando misses another fh dtl pretty wide. 2-0, R.
Andy pushes him out wide with a nice bh cc, another fh miss. 3-0.
Good fh approach (yes, he actually did) and bh volley winner. 4-0.
Verdy boy sets up a OH smash with a fh I/I, but flubs it oh so spectacularly. 5-0.
Roddick misses a bh wide, sort of an ufe. 1-5, Verdasco at the changeover.

Posted by Aube 08/13/2009 at 02:05 PM

sorry,-ball-

"Flavia Pennetta has won her last 14 matches since Wimbledon winning Palermo and Los Angeles in the process"

CORRECTION
Flavia Pennetta has won her last 14 matches since losing in the semifinals to Caroline Wozniacki in Bastad winning Palermo and Los Angeles in the process

Posted by federerfan 08/13/2009 at 02:06 PM

"will she be an Ace seed?"

MA :) :)
I thought you were going to say something like
"tune-in, same day same time next week to find out" or
"find out when we come back after the commercial break!"

LOL

Andy Murray looking very impressive. Seems least rusty of the big 4.

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 02:07 PM

Murray in total control of the first set, will serve for it at 5-1

I have to do lunch, it doesn't look as if JCF has any chance here.
I do hope Roddick/Verdasco treat us to a third set.
Roddick takes the first in the tiebreak

Will be back in a while.

Posted by Aussiemarg Madame President finally comes out of rehab and rejoices in Vamos Forever 08/13/2009 at 02:07 PM

Tight 1st set,but Roddick deserved to win it.

Posted by Black Matt 08/13/2009 at 02:08 PM

*whew* Roddick takes the TB. Keep it up, Andy. Try and get a break now and wrap this up in straights. Verdasco's too dangerous to be left alive.
