Montreal Crisis Center, Day 4 08/13/2009 - 11:23 AM

89763228

Well, it wasn't the stiffest test for Rafael Nadal's battered knee, but his first official match since his hiatus from the tour re-etablished his W tradition. I have a few meetings this morning, so that's it for now. You know what to do. . .

OOooops, it's back on. Never mind.

Posted by manuelsantanafan 08/13/2009 at 02:09 PM

Juanqui gets his five first serves in last service game and was down a break point and got broken.

Juanqui actually playing well and Murray is just too damn good so far.

Btw, Tennis.tv is a serious ripoff. I don't pay to see a frozen screen. I can go to a free site for that nonsense.

arghhh, can't find a working stream for Sveta-Kim...

Greenhopper - thanks for your match calling!

Same to rafadoc and tfactor.

Posted by tennisesq. 08/13/2009 at 02:10 PM

Jenni,
Thanks for that.

I'm glad Flavia won, she was definitely the better player today. I don't know what the stats are, but I'm sure Flavia had more winners than Vee.

anyone knows a stream in Chinese or any other language for Sveta-Kim? :-))) the links on atdhe.com and fromsport.com are blocked at my work... :-(((((((((

AM, hehe, see my post @2:10. Yes, indeed. Muzz is playing unbelievable. Ferrero doesn't even know how to win a point...let alone a game.

Posted by greenhopper 08/13/2009 at 02:18 PM

Verdasco is misfiring from both wings. Stick a fork in this guy.

Posted by lollipop 08/13/2009 at 02:18 PM

Pspace, if I were you, I wouldn't jinx it. :-)

Posted by lira vega 08/13/2009 at 02:19 PM

Nice start from Kim, dictating with FH, good serving, gets 2 BPs after holding at 15 in the first game, Sveta saves both with serve-FH combo and great kick second serve, but then makes two bad UEs. Kim 2-0

Posted by Pspace (Lestat Time!) 08/13/2009 at 02:20 PM

Watched Roddick play the TB against Sauce. Nice pick-up volley. 8% fluke, but still. Every time I watch him and JMdP, it feels like the gap to the big 4 are closing. On current form, I'd prolly rate both of them above Novak.

Posted by greenhopper 08/13/2009 at 02:23 PM

hot damn. she can still run like the wind and hit nice forehands.
Kimmie holds for 3-0.

Posted by lira vega 08/13/2009 at 02:23 PM

Kim out rallying Sveta from the backcourt. Second serve looks a bit shaky, one double plus one second serve that bounce off the net into the service box in this game

"Just noticed you are blocked at work sokol - sorry"

yeah :-(((, anyway, thanks, Vuvu

haha nice, pspace. and btw, i do agree with u about JMDP and Randy being above novak based on current form. The only place where nole has an edge over these guys, is clay. I know that if Roddick makes it through, Nole is gonna have a tough match on his hands. Hopefully, there wont be a repeat of IW '09. *shudders*

Sveta's game is off at the moment and Kim is doing her usual thing - running down balls and keeping the ball in play

Posted by Cayman Karen (as defined by Ruth and Master Ace) and Bring on the FedTwins - 2 many names 08/13/2009 at 02:25 PM

She is incredibly fast and she looks quite fit. The problem unfortunately was never with Kim physically, it was always all about her head

Posted by yello fuzzy 08/13/2009 at 02:26 PM

hello roosters and hens
well my tennis summer nightmare continues....more lackluster play from Venus
( not to take anything away from Flava, she served well and was crafty and consistent)
I've been in recovery since Roddicks loss at Wimby...
but the arrival of champagne Kimmie is a welcome relief....

Just saw the legendary split - damn she still has that

Posted by Pspace (Lestat Time!) 08/13/2009 at 02:30 PM

I wonder if some1 has collected stats on this. In the games that go deuce-ad, deuce-ad, deuce-ad...if the server is a lefty, is it more likely that he'll lose the points at deuce...giving an inflated BP saved number. Seems like Rafa and Nando are always facing and saving BPs...while other guys are failing to covert game points.

Posted by Black Matt 08/13/2009 at 02:30 PM

AmyLu - you're hired.

Posted by Master Ace 08/13/2009 at 02:31 PM

Caroline Wozniacki advances as Melinda Czink retires down 0-3

Posted by greenhopper 08/13/2009 at 02:31 PM

Kimmie is the original JJ. With a better serve.

Posted by lira vega 08/13/2009 at 02:32 PM

Sveta being more aggressive than at the start of the match, making some UEs, but prolly bodes a bit better for on a whole her than letting Kim yank her around the court
First split!!! But Sveta wins the point on a super volley
At deuce on Kim's serve Sveta with monster I/O FH, but Kim gets it back for a bad FH UE from Sveta.
And Kim holds after missed return

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 02:32 PM

bad luck for Mellinda, I hope she's OK and it's not serious

Hi Amylu nice to see you again finally.

Posted by Cayman Karen (as defined by Ruth and Master Ace) and Bring on the FedTwins - 2 many names 08/13/2009 at 02:33 PM

@greenhopper that is so true - which is quite the ironical statement, seeing as how Kim was never known for having an effective serve. Her movement and foot speed were really her trademark. Those and the split. It would look really bad if Kim beat Sveta today. Man, I can see the headlines now

Posted by AmyLu 08/13/2009 at 02:33 PM

Roddick serving at 2-3

Roddick hits a gorgeous FH DTL for a winner 15-0

Verdasco takes a second serve return early and cracks a BH return winner 15-15

Very good serve by Andy, Verdasco barely gets a racket on it 30-15

Good first serve down the T by Roddick, elicits a short reply -- doesn't quite hit through his FH enough and gives Verdasco a shot at a BH pass, but he nets it 40-15

Good FH winner by Roddick

Roddick holds, now 3-3

Posted by lira vega 08/13/2009 at 02:33 PM

AmyLu, yes please on match calls! Thanks

davai, Vera!

Ummm, a day after beating Ana in 2 tight sets, Czink retires against Caro after trailing 0-3.

Posted by AmyLu 08/13/2009 at 02:36 PM

Verdasco serves out wide, Roddick's return nowhere near the court 15-0

Wow, second serve ace out wide by Verdasco. 30-0

Roddick gets really good depth on a BH, lands at Verdasco's feet, and his reply goes long 30-15

Verdasco hits a well-angled short FH off a low return by Roddick 40-15

Big serve leads to a very weak reply, and hammers a FH for a winner

Verdasco holds, 4-3

OK my Sveta/Kim stream just died.

Posted by AmyLu 08/13/2009 at 02:40 PM

Hi AM :) Hope you are doing well!

Roddick serving:

In a brief exchange of BHs, Roddick's stays steady and Verdasco's not so much. Very poor UFE out wide 15-0

Verdasco decides against a BH and puts himself in position to hit a FH winner 15-15

Good serve out wide by Roddick, Verdasco reply into net 30-15

Good serve up the T by Roddick 40-15

Roddick gets a weak return and puts away a CC FH for a winner

Roddick holds, 4-4

Posted by Pspace (Lestat Time!) 08/13/2009 at 02:40 PM

JCF has managed to find a way to hold. Murray's level has dropped a tad...with some UFEs. But, he's still serving well. JCF needs to find a way to get into Muzz's service games...pronto....or not.

Posted by Master Ace 08/13/2009 at 02:41 PM

Sokol,
If Flavia loses tomorrow, Ana and Flavia will be tied for 10th but if Flavia wins tomorrow, Ana will be 11th.

Posted by lira vega 08/13/2009 at 02:41 PM

Sveta holds mostly with good serves plus one UE from Kim, 4-2

Kim serving, at 30-0 up, two wild FHs, but then an inch-perfect FH DTL followed up by drive volley to the open court gets her game point.
Now Sveta at the net, Kim's attempted at goes long, deuce
BH to the net on a second shot and it's BP for Sveta and she takes it after Kim misses FH DTL under pressure. Kim missed first serves on last three points in that game

Posted by tennisesq. 08/13/2009 at 02:42 PM

Master Ace,
Who does Flavia play tomorrow?

Posted by language inquiry 08/13/2009 at 02:42 PM

Posted by testpro account 08/13/2009 at 02:42 PM

links for Venus!

Posted by tennisesq. 08/13/2009 at 02:42 PM

Nevermind, she plays winner of Bepa-Dani.

Posted by AmyLu 08/13/2009 at 02:42 PM

Verdasco serving:

Beautiful FH winner by Verdasco (almost DTL from his BH corner) 15-0

Verdasco with an ace out wide 30-0

Verdasco decides against a challenge after M tells him it looks wide and Roddick says he doesn't know on the first serve -- Verdasco hammers a FH DTL for a winner 40-0

Good serve out wide, Roddick's return not on the court

Verdasco holds, 5-4

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 02:43 PM

thank you, MA

Off air again. Any alternative links?

Posted by lira vega 08/13/2009 at 02:46 PM

Sveta totally in charge of baseline exchanges now, points ending after her shots, Kim's gonna need to step up.
And she does, goes from 30-15 to 30-40 with aggressive play ending with drive volleys, but FH UE, good serve from Sveta and very nice slice from difficult position and it's 4-4

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 02:47 PM

Dani is serving at 5-6 trying to force the TB
Davai, Vera, derzhis'!

Posted by Black Matt 08/13/2009 at 02:47 PM

Dammit all. Beating Verdasco used to be a sure thing.

I don't feel good about this 3rd set. If Roddick loses that's the 2nd straight year going out in the 3rd round...and this will have been his worst tournament of the year.

Posted by TennisTarkheena (being a bad American today) 08/13/2009 at 02:48 PM

we are going to a third set!! :) Way to force the deciding set Hott Sauce, now win it!!

Posted by AmyLu 08/13/2009 at 02:48 PM

Roddick serving:

Verdasco gets good length on return and gets a short ball from Roddick -- hits a FH winner off it 0-15

Roddick nets a BH -- Verdasco hit a pretty good FH return off the second serve, but that's a BH Roddick normally makes 0-30

Beautiful point construction by Verdasco -- draws Roddick in on a sliced BH, drags Roddick in, and passes him with a BH 0-40

Roddick tries to get too cute, IMO. After pushing Verdasco back (and I think he should stuck to moving him side to side), he tries a drop shot, which Verdasco gets to -- Roddick hits Verdasco's reply, but hits it right to Verdasco who hits the ball into the open court

Verdasco breaks and wins the set 6-4

Posted by CherryNYC 08/13/2009 at 02:48 PM

Wow -- Verdasco breaks to take the second set 6-4. The last few games were very, very strong from him.

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 02:49 PM

"we are going to a third set!! :) Way to force the deciding set Hott Sauce, now win it!!"

whohoo!
Vamos!

Posted by lira vega 08/13/2009 at 02:49 PM

Kim at 39% of first serves in per my understanding of Bulgarian or Macedonian commie prolly explains why she's struggling to get the upper hand in the rallies. She threw in one DF at the start of this game, but gets away with it after UEs from Kuz and holds

Posted by Pspace (Lestat Time!) 08/13/2009 at 02:50 PM

Wow! Muzz is just putting on an exhibition now. Yanking JCF all over the court to set up MP, and he takes it with a passer, as JCF was unlucky to hit the tape with the approach. 6-1 6-3.

Congrats to fellow Muzz fans. Commiserations to JCF fans.

Posted by lollipop 08/13/2009 at 02:50 PM

Vamos 'Nando!:)
Thanks Amy Lu for the match calls, you are doing a great job! Much appreciated.

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 02:51 PM

I'm back.
I see Verdasco gave me my wish and we have a third set.

Murray takes the match by breaking JCF again. He wins 6-1, 6-3

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 02:52 PM

Congrats to MAndy, that sounds like a very good performance.

Commiserations to Ferrero and his fans. He had some good wins...

Posted by lollipop 08/13/2009 at 02:52 PM

What a dominant performance from Muzz. Clearly the strongest in the field as of now, though i'm not really able to evaluate Roger's and Rafa's game atm. But the scot has got a really good chance.

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 02:52 PM

TB for Vera
*worried*....

Davai!

Posted by AmyLu 08/13/2009 at 02:53 PM

Sorry for any typos -- I'm trying to type quickly, and I noticed my grammar has gone off in places.

Verdasco serves to start the third:

Verdasco was in control of the point, moving Roddick around with his FH, and then makes a poor UFE wide with his FH 0-15

Excellent defense by Roddick (most done with his BH), and Verdasco with another poor error -- tries to hit a BH DTL for an outright winner and misses 0-30

This time Verdasco connects on a BH DTL and draws an error from Andy 15-30

Great serve out wide by Verdasco -- Roddick almost gets an OH by Verdasco back in play 30-30

Another good serve out wide by Verdasco -- short reply, and hits a FH CC for a winner 40-30

Ace down the T

Verdasco holds, 1-0

Posted by greenhopper 08/13/2009 at 02:53 PM

Damn you to hell, Nando. You're serving first in the decider, try to make use of it.

Posted by Black Matt 08/13/2009 at 02:54 PM

Apparently I can't trust the scoreboard. It went from 15-40 to 15-30 to game Verdasco in the space of 10 seconds.

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 02:54 PM

Gonzo and Davy up next on BN.

Good hold for Verdasco to start the third set

Posted by lira vega 08/13/2009 at 02:54 PM

Kuz serving to stay in the set
2nd serve, Kim attacks it with BH DTL, Sveta pulls BH CC wide 0-15
Kim with the fH long 15-15
Kim attacks another second serve, this time FH CC, Sveta nets FH DTL on the run 15-30
another missed first serve and really bad FH UE from Sveta, 2 set points for Kim
missed first sreve, Kim dictating with FH, Sveta recovers nicely with wrong footing FH CC and then hits BH winner
But nets relatively easy BH in the next point. Set Kim

Posted by manuelsantanafan 08/13/2009 at 02:54 PM

ferrero played top 7-8 player quality tennis.

And Murray just too good, even tho his first serve sucked for the first set and a half.

In the last 5-8 years, the only hard court tennis I've seen that would have beat Murray today is Federer at his best or Roddick serving absolutely lights out.

If Murray keeps this level thru the U.S. Open, noone beating him unless Federer recaptures his 2006-07 form.

Posted by vuvu 08/13/2009 at 02:55 PM

well well well indeed - Clijsters takes 1st set against world no6! lol

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 02:55 PM

If Kolya goes through today, he'll face MAndy tomorrow. I hope I'll have a stream for that. Their H2H is 4-4...
