Montreal Crisis Center, Day 4 08/13/2009 - 11:23 AM

Well, it wasn't the stiffest test for Rafael Nadal's battered knee, but his first official match since his hiatus from the tour re-etablished his W tradition. I have a few meetings this morning, so that's it for now. You know what to do. . .

Yup.

Posted by Black Matt 08/13/2009 at 03:35 PM

Aah! One second it's deuce, the next second it says Andy won the game!

Posted by AmyLu 08/13/2009 at 03:35 PM

Verdasco serving:

Beautiful point construction, used his FH with great depth, and set up a FH DTL winner 15-0

Verdasco has 31 FH winners, Roddick 7

Roddick's return wide 30-0

Verdasco had a short ball, lined it up, and missed his FH 30-15

Verdasco doesn't make the same mistake on this point -- hits a FH for a winner CC 40-15

And then double faults 40-30

And sprays another FH Deuce

Great point by Roddick -- good defense and took full advantage of some tentative shots by Verdasco to hit a FH passing shot winner Ad Roddick

Verdasco with an ace Deuce

Roddick nets a FH and screams in frustration Ad Verdasco

If I were Roddick, I'd hit more toward Verdasco's FH right now. He's not showing a ton of confidence with it.

Roddick great retrieving, and hits a good CC shot to Verdasco's BH. Verdasco had the opening to go DTL, but didn't give himself any margin for error, and hits it just wide. Deuce

Verdasco's FH sails. Horrifically. Ad Roddick

Verdaso's FH has completely broken down. Roddick with a short shot to Verdasco's FH, and I don't even think Verdasco's CC FH landed in the doubles alley. Well wide.

Roddick breaks and will serve for the match.

Posted by lottis 08/13/2009 at 03:35 PM

Fernando most have been getting a bit tight in this game, did some bad misses, Andy to serve for the match then.

Posted by Pspace (Lestat Time!) 08/13/2009 at 03:35 PM

And, Nando makes a donation to the Roddick foundation. Misses a couple of fhs to give the break...not so easy to hit those shots under pressure, eh?

Posted by CherryNYC 08/13/2009 at 03:35 PM

And there you have it -- Roddick breaks and will serve for the match 6-5. Knew this would be close.

Posted by Master Ace 08/13/2009 at 03:35 PM

Tennisesq,
Thanks for adding Dubai to the list of HC. It seems like she can not win an outdoor HC in America.

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 03:36 PM

Big misses from Verdasco back to back give Andy the break.
Roddick to serve for the match.

Davydenko holds at love for 4 all

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 03:36 PM

"she seemed to wake up at just the right time at the end of that set"

good for her... (and for me :-)))

better check how's Lena doing....

Posted by Black Matt 08/13/2009 at 03:36 PM

AmyLu, you are a hero.

Come on, Andy, you HAVE to hold serve here. Ace, ace, unreturnable, ace!

Posted by Jake 08/13/2009 at 03:36 PM

RAndy breaks - yes!

Now serve it out, 6-5!

Posted by manuelsantanafan 08/13/2009 at 03:37 PM

Verdasco is definitely in the top five of the ATP Bonehead list.

I would say, "unbelievable," but Verdasco has displayed these meltdowns so many times at crucial stages, this is nothing new.

Gil Reyes is good, but he doesn't handle brain transplants.

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 03:37 PM

oh, Nando :-(((

Posted by Kristy 08/13/2009 at 03:37 PM

Lord. Andy's patience has served him well. He waits now to draw errors... it makes up for his lack of dazzling ground strokes (which I find puzzling, actually - why doesn't he hit harder?)

Posted by TennisFan3 08/13/2009 at 03:37 PM

No wonder the greatest asset on

Posted by FortuneCookie 08/13/2009 at 03:39 PM

Anyone seen Jon Wertheim's latest tweet?

Hmmm,so bye bye Marian then?Interesting,at least he's taking a step in (hopefully) the right direction, getting someone totally new in...

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 03:39 PM

wow, Verdasco had more aces than Roddick... surprising...

Posted by ericinphilly 08/13/2009 at 03:39 PM

hi all. good afternoon!!
Dang you Venus!! WHY!!! i think i agree with whoever posted that they dont want to root for Venus except at Wimbledon, way too hard to have high hopes and see one of your fav players on a bad day. *sigh* oh well. i hope Kimmie wins the third and deciding set and of course Serena later on.
....Also for night owls like me who have Tennis Channel, they have coverage from 10p until 4 am for Cincy.

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 03:39 PM

Gonzalez holds for 5-4

Andy with 3 MP. Selfishly I was hoping for a TB but these guys didn't disappoint. I expected a very entertaining match and they're giving us just that. I must admit I want to postpone the Rafa frazzle as long as I can :)

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 03:41 PM

Kolya is serving to stay in the set at 4-5
Davai, Russia's #1! :-)

Posted by Kristy 08/13/2009 at 03:41 PM

Oh nooooo. Andy let two match points go by.

Posted by tennisesq. 08/13/2009 at 03:41 PM

Vee ran into an in form opponent. She has time to find her form. I was worried about her playing two tournaments in a row. But with this early exit, Toronto sounds like a good idea.

You have got to be kidding me...

Posted by AmyLu 08/13/2009 at 03:42 PM

Verdasco nets a FH. 15-0

And, another bad miss from the FH by Verdasco. Well wide. 30-0

Verdasco hammers a FH for a winner 30-15

Roddick puts away an OH at net 40-15

Mo overrules on a Roddick serve and calls a fault. Roddick peppers Verdasco's FH, but it holds up -- and then gets a chance to hit a BH CC for a winner. 40-30

Roddick breaks a string, and slices a BH which goes wide Deuce

Best point of the match ends with a ripped Verdasco BH passing shot winner Ad Verdasco

And Verdasco hammers a FH return winner

Verdasco breaks, and we're in a tiebreak

Posted by TennisFan3 08/13/2009 at 03:42 PM

Yes!! Verdasco breaks. Excellent stuff.

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 03:42 PM

Now Verdasco with a BP.

MSF, you're too hard on the members of the Armada. My Spanish heritage doesn't appreciate that ;)

Make that Verdasco breaks to give me my TB. He's come through for me twice in this match!

Posted by Cayman Karen (as defined by Ruth and Master Ace) and Bring on the FedTwins - 2 many names 08/13/2009 at 03:42 PM

Are you kidding me, Verdasco breaks Randy saving 3 match points. I dont believe it. Oh Andy. What is happening to you.

Posted by TennisTarkheena (being a bad American today) 08/13/2009 at 03:42 PM

COME ON!!!!!!!!!!! I told you to break back and you did!!! Now stick around for the Tiebreak this time dang it! Vamos Verdasco!

Posted by lira vega 08/13/2009 at 03:42 PM

FortuneCookie,
Martin will just be new part of the team, not replacing Vajda. According to Novak, nobody will ever replace Vajda *eye roll*

Posted by Or 08/13/2009 at 03:42 PM

Ouch.

Oh, I don't want to see Andy losing a three-set heartbreaker again.

Posted by greenhopper 08/13/2009 at 03:42 PM

Yay, Nando.
Please don't freeze up in this TB.

Posted by CherryNYC 08/13/2009 at 03:43 PM

excellent stuff from Sauce!

Posted by Pspace (Lestat Time!) 08/13/2009 at 03:43 PM

OMG. Nando breaks. Take that! Andy broke a string at 40-30 MP.

Posted by Master Ace 08/13/2009 at 03:43 PM

FortuneCookie,
There was something in the works with a newcomer to Novak's camp but the name would not be released for 2 weeks. Thanks for the information.

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 03:44 PM

wow, Verdasco broke back? Nice. TB. Please, Nando, take it.

RAndy is so strong in TBs, though...

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 03:44 PM

Ok I haven't forgotten Gonzo holds
Davy to serve 5-6 to force the TB

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 03:44 PM

VAMOS!

Posted by AmyLu 08/13/2009 at 03:44 PM

Verdasco's good FH has returned -- he crushes a FH for a winner. 1-0

Verdasco just crushed a FH DTL for a winner, has a mini-break, Roddick still serving, down 0-2

Great serve out wide by Roddick

Verdasco serving at 2-1

Posted by Pspace (Lestat Time!) 08/13/2009 at 03:44 PM

LOLz. Nando is playing lights out. What a shot! Andy just needs to ride out the storm...but it's already in the TB.

Posted by greenhopper 08/13/2009 at 03:45 PM

Roddick with a great paint-the-line fh, Verdasco replies with a super fh dtl on the run. Roddick tosses his racquet,

2-1, Nando on serve.

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 03:45 PM

Hold, Kolya, take it to TB. Davai!

Posted by TennisTarkheena (being a bad American today) 08/13/2009 at 03:45 PM

Posted by federerfan 08/13/2009 at 03:46 PM

why do they call it "lights out"? feel free to respond after the TB! :)

Posted by FortuneCookie 08/13/2009 at 03:46 PM

Hmmm, lira vega, methinks that if things don't start looking up soon Vajda *needs* to be replaced, whatever Nole...Clay court season excepted (and Masters Cup),he's never really come out of that slump since he lost to Safin at Wimbly last year! But yeah,he's a whole other issue, back to the matches in hand ;)

Come on Andy!

Posted by Kristy 08/13/2009 at 03:46 PM

Come on, Andy. Three all.

Posted by AmyLu 08/13/2009 at 03:46 PM

And then the bad FH makes an appearance -- Verdasco with a big first serve, gets a short reply, and sends his FH well wide, Cahill says he should go for more margin 2-2

Verdasco serves and pushes Roddick backward during the rally. Wins the point 3-2

Verdasco lines up to hit a FH DTL and nets it. 3-3

Roddick still has one serve

Posted by yello fuzzy 08/13/2009 at 03:47 PM

after a costume change, Champagne Kimmie is back on track, she holds to open the 3rd set

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 03:48 PM

Yes! Davydenko holds to force the TB.

Posted by toonie 08/13/2009 at 03:48 PM

I'm loving the coverage on TSN there is very little chatter during points!

Posted by Pspace (Lestat Time!) 08/13/2009 at 03:48 PM

federerfan, I think "lights out" is a boxing term...basically, when you knock a guy out you put his lights out. Tennis equivalent would be hitting amazing winners.

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 03:48 PM

"Champagne Kimmie"

why Champagne?

Posted by AmyLu 08/13/2009 at 03:48 PM

Roddick puts away a short shot with a FH winner, 4-3 Roddick

Roddick badly nets a sliced BH off a somewhat tentative Verdasco FH 4-4

Verdasco hits a FH winner DTL off a good, low slice from Roddick, 5-4 Verdasco

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 03:49 PM

Kolya and Gonzo are in TB. Kolya with mini

Posted by Or 08/13/2009 at 03:49 PM

Verdasco's return is well long, 5-5

Good, big first serve from Roddick, Verdasco can't hit return on court, 6-5 to Roddick

Which Verdasco will appear down match point?

Posted by greenhopper 08/13/2009 at 03:50 PM

big serve, big serve, big surprise.
MP Roddick.

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 03:50 PM

Posted by Kristy 08/13/2009 at 03:51 PM

Yay! Another nice bromance hug at the net. Hurray Andy.

Posted by AmyLu 08/13/2009 at 03:51 PM

Long rally ends with a Verdasco FH error. Roddick did a good job of throwing in slices and mixing things up. Well done to Roddick.

Very nice exchange at net between the two.

Posted by manuelsantanafan 08/13/2009 at 03:51 PM

and three more forehand UFEs from Verdasco take him out of the tiebreak and the match.

He keeps his place in the Top Five Boneheads.

Bravo.

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 03:51 PM

Congrats to Andy Roddick and fans. Too bad for Verdasco.
Great exchange at the net.
Very enjoyable match!!

Davydenko is in control of the TB 4-1

Posted by Pspace (Lestat Time!) 08/13/2009 at 03:51 PM

And, Randy takes it. Verdasco can't handle the junk...and is afraid to go for any ting. Randy just outwaits him. Well done Andy. Commiserations to Verdasco fans.

Posted by TennisTarkheena (being a bad American today) 08/13/2009 at 03:52 PM

Verdasco - gah! You had the minibreak but at least you forced the TB. Congrats to Roddick and fans, you had better win again Nole next match! Well Vamos to the next spaniard on court!

Posted by Black Matt 08/13/2009 at 03:52 PM

Bloody hell, that was mentally exhausting, willing the scoreboard to say Winner: A. Roddick.

How hard do you have to make it Andy? At 7-5 I was going to say, oh well, Verdasco's good, I'll take it. But now I just feel sort of queasy. Glad he won, but man...

I don't feel nearly as good about playing Djokovic as I did before the tournament started. I would have given Roddick the clear advantage. Now? Probably not.

Oh well. Apologies, Verdasco fans.

Posted by Or 08/13/2009 at 03:52 PM

Ah, and he wins! TB champ (except for that youknowwhen TB).

Great exchange at the net.

Posted by CherryNYC 08/13/2009 at 03:52 PM

Andy takes it 7-5 in the TB. Poor Sauce, he's so good, but he can't keep his head on straight.

Posted by Kristy 08/13/2009 at 03:52 PM

Sorry, commiserations to Verdasco fans!

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 03:52 PM

Posted by Cayman Karen (as defined by Ruth and Master Ace) and Bring on the FedTwins - 2 many names 08/13/2009 at 03:52 PM

MA, I thought it was because she bought all the fans in Antwerp champagne after playing her last match

Posted by Lynne (Rafalite) 08/13/2009 at 03:52 PM

Some match between Andy and Sauce!! I'm always torn between these two guys. Congrats Andy and fans ... commies Nando and fans.

Posted by lottis 08/13/2009 at 03:53 PM

Can’t be too unhappy with an Andy win, he deserves some luck after his summer. Was a great ending and from when I started watching in the end of the second set, some really good tennis as well.

Posted by Black Matt 08/13/2009 at 03:53 PM

Then again, I didn't actually SEE the match, heh, so I really should just keep my mouth shut. I don't know anything.

Posted by Tfactor 08/13/2009 at 03:53 PM

MSF, that's so uncalled for. Oh whatever, I take it you'd do better facing Roddick.

My first quarterfinal is set (I'm sure everyone had the same picks for this side of the draw) Now big frazzling time!

Posted by yello fuzzy 08/13/2009 at 03:53 PM

heartbreaking loss for Verdasco, but happy days for Roddick...great win! he keeps plugging away...he could easily have been flat and dispirited after the tough defeats this summer...but he's back in the trenches

Posted by lira vega 08/13/2009 at 03:54 PM

FortuneCookie, think his reasoning is that he needs to be at right place emotionally, mentally or whatever to play his best tennis and Vajda is somebody who understands him, they grew close over the years and not having him on the team is not an option for Nole. I don't particularly like it either...

And I don't like Nando ruining my bracket any more :(

Champagne Kimmy may have something to do with her offering all attendees at one of her matches during her first farewell tour free champagne.

Or, perhaps I dreamt that up.

Posted by Matt Zemek 08/13/2009 at 03:54 PM

Only a round of 16 battle at a non-major event, but if Andy had lost this, how much would it have fed an increasing sense of helplessness and why-me disillusionment?

Roddick finally wins an overtime match. Thank goodness.

Posted by CherryNYC 08/13/2009 at 03:54 PM

Both Andy and Sauce won 77% of first serve points. amazing. Sauce with twice as many winners 60-30, and more UFEs, 48-26

Posted by Jake 08/13/2009 at 03:55 PM

How did RAndy grow up so much?!

What patience!

Break a string on a 3rd match point and get taken to a tie-break.

Then patiently bide your time to take out a game Verdasco?

Priceless.

After Wimby2009, I said all RAndy needs to do is do the MORE OF THE SAME - stop losing your cool by line calls, fighting with umpires crap, and now look what we got!

Way to go, RAndy!

Now, go get you some rest, an even bigger threat (Djokovic) awaits tomorrow. You know you can beat, just keep your cool, stick to your game plan, and you'll take him out like you did Nando today.

Posted by sokol 08/13/2009 at 03:55 PM

"Davydenko leads Gonzalez 7-6(2)"

so, Kolya was able to take TB? nice....
thanks, MA, for the update

switching attention to ladies' matches...

Posted by lollipop 08/13/2009 at 03:56 PM

just heartbroken. gotta tip my hat to verdasco, who somehow managed to make FH winners from everywhere on the court. incredible, incredible stuff. But all credit to roddick for sticking in there. Gahhh...i was hoping for nando to go through, that FH is a beauty. But could not happen today. Commiserations Nando fans and Congrats Roddick Fans. There is no way novak's gonna be able to win against a guy playing as well as roddick is right now.

Would appreciate if anyone could offer opinions on Rafa's state, as it won't be on TV here, and I can't stream. Thank you much! :)

MSF,
That's what I thought too. Kim offered free champagne to people who attended one of her matches in Antwerp. Pete wrote an article on it and I think he came up with the nickname.
