The Last Word
Posted 10/30/2009 @ 11 :02 AM

Capt_21a45954cfe44a0096e18e71ca2b14df_qatar_wta_tennis_lkw144 Does anyone remember the Jim Rome sports talk show by that name? It was on Fox Sports Net for many years, and before the proliferation of athletic chatterboxes on TV (almost all of which are unwatchable), "The Last Word" was one of the more entertaining programs on cable.

Two other reasons for this title:

1. Pete has returned from Montana, the fourth largest state in the U.S.A. He'll be stopping by this afternoon; I'll revert to background music/wallpaper on TENNIS.com.

2. Today's last slate of round-robin matches will determine the four semifinalists. Per the WTA's website, only Serena Williams has clinched a spot in the Qatar quartet. Today's outcomes will give us the other three. I've included the players' match records (first) and their sets won/lost (second) next to their names below -- sets won is the first tiebreaker, I believe. FYI, Venus Williams' record in the tournament is 1-2; 4-5.

White Group

- Caroline Wozniacki (2-0; 4-2) vs. Jelena Jankovic (1-1; 2-2)
- Agnieszka Radwanska (0-0; 0-0) vs. Victoria Azarenka (1-1; 3-2)

Maroon Group

- Svetlana Kuznetsova (0-2; 1-4) vs. Elena Dementieva (1-1; 2-3)

This is your place to chat about today's matches and anything else tennis.

Saturday Order of Play
Cara Black and Liezel Huber vs Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs at 7 AM
Single semifinals at 9:30 AM
Nuria Llagostera Vives and Maria Jose Martinez vs Serena Williams and Venus Williams at 12:30 PM per website(1:30 PM per Tennis Channel). Most likely TC will be correct as you can not play 2 SF in 3 hours as proven this week so far

Sunday Order of Play
Singles final at 10 AM(ESPN2 will have tape delayed coverage at Noon and Tennis Channel at 2 PM)
Doubles final at Noon(Tennis Channel will have LIVE)

Woz winning the matches here is amazing, because it is obvious she is not in condition to play.

Am i first? Am i first?
Anyway, lovely smile from the Hott Woz after somehow winning the first (and maybe only) game of this set for her.
The chair umpire certainly has a low-toned voice.

im 4th...

jj going for 5-1 lead...

caro broke... 4-2...

It look like the following will be the record in the White Group unless Caroline rallies from 2-6,1-4

Caroline and Jelena with 2 wins but Jelena is 4-2 and Caroline is 4-4 in sets.

Therefore, if Agnieszka wins, Caroline and Jelena will advance and if Victoria wins, Victoria and Jelena will advance.

Record by sets if Victoria win
Victoria 5-2 or 5-3
Jelena 4-2
Caroline 4-4

Aaah, Master Ace got me:)
Why do they cut away from the Hott Woz when she's waiting to return? That's a money shot, right there:)
Yep, that's the shot, thank you very much.
And while i was distracted, JJ does a couple of weird things, with a BH UFE and a DF from 30 all to get broken, although she is still a break up and should take it anyway.

Ugh. Come ON JJ! Pfft. DF to give Woz the game.

I am in love with Barry White the Umpire

Hopefully he will come out with

Love to Love you Baby lol!

Good Morning Everyone

that picture is scary, Pennetta was right about the size...

Lynn Welch has chaired Victoria/Jelena, Serena/Venus, and Vera/Caroline

Kader Nouni has chaired Elena/Venus,Victoria/Caroline, Svetlana/Venus, and Caroline/Jelena

Eva Asderaki has chaired Serena/Svetlana,Dinara/Jelena, and Serena/Elena

jj toi serve for the match... after many longer rallies...

Has anyone a link to this match

Wonders never cease Mr X is actually here to watch this match

Dont worry I have your personlised towel ready and waiting

JJ doesnt blink and breaks right back to go up 5-2 in the second. She will serve for the match next. Some good return winners by JJ in that game, taking advantage of the Hott Woz's very weak serves. At 30 all, Caro probably tried the biggest run of the match to get to a volley, but couldnt get it over the net.

Come on, JJ serve it out!

matchpoint

LMAO at TTC featuring Blake (he of no Plan B) for a segment on making mid-match adjustments.

jj won... caro's fate now to be determined by aggie.... hope aggie does poker face on vika....

Congrats to JJ!
Congrats to Jacko and other JJ fans

Commies to Caro and fans

And the battle of the fierce foreheads is over :)

Congrats to JJ & fans. Commies to Caro & fans.

"that picture is scary, Pennetta was right about the size..."

LOL..Some people are just easily intimidated,Love the pic Rawr!hehe

haha Sbily. Was just thinking the same exact thing. :)
c'mon TTC please show us the live tennis

"so, Caro could beat Azarenka, who self-dstracted in the end, injured Zvonareva, who bled on the court, but can't beat in-form player, who's not a headcase..." - anon

P.S. I think you meant "self destructed."

Really, anon? Do you really believe what you wrote? Let's be fair. Wozzy beat Azarenka fair and square and gave a heroic effort when beating injured Zvon (BTW Wozzy was injured, too, in case you didn't notice). Add to the mix that JJ lost to Azarenka then basically had a day off to rest when Safina retired.
So, I'd say JJ is well rested coming into her match against an injured and fatigued Wozzy today as was Zvon. The shock would be if she DIDN'T win this match.

I happen to enjoy both JJ and Wozzy and will congratulate the winner (probably JJ). Maybe you could dial back your venom and do likewise. It'll make you a much happier person, I can assure you!
Right now, you just come off as petty and bitter. Peace!

Congrats to JJ. Bravo and commiserations to Wozzy.

LMAOOOOO Tfactor.

Congrats to JJ and her Fans (I'm only a "small f" fan).
Rest up, Caro.

Unfortunately, TTC was having problems with the feed and didn't even show the last game.

Commiserations and hugs to Wozniacki fans - still should be really proud of her, she tried her heart out up to the last minute - there just wasn't much left for her to give today.

and yay for my JJ! She played a very solid match - far better than against Azarenka - and didn't lose her focus too much to take her opportunity. Pleased for her. :)

Well I arrived late and didnt see the match

Congrats JJ well done, also to Jacko and Jewell

Bad luck Caroline, maybe yesterday had its repercussions.

Hi to you too, AM:)
They let me go on Friday afernoon, thankfully.
However, i regret that i couldnt watch the Hott Woz's good matches, but i watched this one.
JJ wins, 6-2,6-2. First, congratulations to her fans. There's no question she was the better player today: she served better (anybody would have served better than Caro today, but still), she returned better, with several return winners, she played better deffense when she had to, and she was much more effective when attacking. The Hott Woz's issues are not her problem, and she went out there and did the job, without much problem.
Conmiserations to fellow Caro fans, but i think her statement is already made in this tournament, and i dont see her in the condition to beat anybody the way she was today.

JJ crashes Woz, or to crash someone you need to be breadsticked in one set, according to Sam? well, then JJ just won. Congrat, anyway

seems like a big part of Woz's game is to play against a headcase, who can self-distract and Caro stay tough through those moments and get the win. it's not that easy gainst players who ar not headcases...

When did Jankovic develop this kind of speech impediment? I've never heard her speak like that before.

Congrats JJ. Hopefully Vika can find a way to win today

Maybe JJ is sucking on a lolly

Well its Halloween here in Sydney today

Hoping the Kiddies like my lollies this year.

commies to Caro fans. Love her fight.

"seems like a big part of Woz's game is to play against a headcase, who can self-distract and Caro stay tough through those moments and get the win. it's not that easy gainst players who ar not headcases..."

Is that an accurate assessment of what just occurred? Did you expect Wozi to have a chance given that she has played 3 days in a row & has had physically exhausting matches. Jankovic has had a stroke of luck so far this week.

Unless Agnieszka wins later, Caroline wonderful season comes to a close as Jelena advances.

If Victoria win in straights, we will have the following:
Serena vs Jelena and Victoria vs Venus or Elena semifinal tomorrow

If Victoria win in 3 sets or Agnieszka wins, we will have the following:
Serena vs Victoria or Caroline and Jelena vs Venus or Elena

OK, so it's the battle of the Russians next. Will Kuzzy be motivated enough to make a match of it? I dont think there will be anything weird with them being both Russians, but i wonder if Kuzzy will care enough about the match if things get difficult.
Elena is the distinct favourtie in my book. Which probably means she'll lose:)

lollipop Hi,do you know if Novak is going to play Medibank ext year at all?

hope aggie wins today...........

*requesting peace*

White Group

- Caroline Wozniacki (2-0; 4-2) vs. Jelena Jankovic (1-1; 2-2)
- Agnieszka Radwanska (0-0; 0-0) vs. Victoria Azarenka (1-1; 3-2)

I think this "Championship of Champions" is really turning into a joke with all the injuries. What was Radwanska most significant tournament this year (this "significant" would mean that she won most points from that tournament --- not necessarily a win in a small tournament)

Mr. X: I'm rooting for Lenochka, too. I gave up rooting for Svetochka after having my heart broken too many times by her.

P.S. Thanks to sokol for the "ochka" suffixes : )

Master Ace I dont think Samantha Elin could survive if that happens

Either we will lol!

just...total meh, Ernie. You had about a million minibreaks in that TB.

Congrats to Zeballos fans.

"Is that an accurate assessment of what just occurred?"

Babe,
Agreed. Caroline almost got knocked out in the last game against Vera via cramp but stood up and won the match a few minutes later.

"Jankovic has had a stroke of luck so far this week."

wasn't she lucky? retirement by Dina, tired injured Caro...
lucky girl, my Russians need to strike that luck sometimes :-)

Jewell,
Maybe you should request war instead. You know the reverse psychology may have more success ;-)

I don't know who to root for between Elenea & Sveta. I like them both really. Have I said I really don't like this round robin format?

Hi, everyone: Congrats to JJ fans. Big Commies to Caro and fans. Her two previous matches were so tough, but kudos to her for coming out today and doing her best.

btw, Gulbis lost his match...

Maybe, Tfactor. :)

Go Kuzzy and Elena!May the best player win;)(cant choose)hehe

agreed.... jj is just so lucky this week....

"I think this "Championship of Champions" is really turning into a joke with all the injuries. What was Radwanska most significant tournament this year (this "significant" would mean that she won most points from that tournament --- not necessarily a win in a small tournament)"

I disagree that it is turning into a joke. There have been a few tough exciting & grueling matches in both groups. But, I do believe though that the grouping was so lobsided to begin with that any small deviation from the norm was bound to turn one group into complete disarray. The white group was like a sleepover compared to the maroon group & then with the withdrawals it turned into a complete fluff party.

"I'm rooting for Lenochka, too. I gave up rooting for Svetochka after having my heart broken too many times by her"

I'm with you, carnap, plus Sveta has no chance anyway

"Thanks to sokol for the "ochka" suffixes"

you're welcome, carnap :-)

White Group (Agnieszka replacing Vera(ankle injury) who replaced Dinara(back injury))

Agnieszka Radwanska (43-23 overall ; 2-7 against Top 10)- Since the United States Open, Agnieszka has played well as she made the finals at Beijing(Kuznetsova) and the semifinals at Tokyo(Sharapova) and Linz(Kvitova). She lost her first match in Moscow due to being fatigued from playing in the prior 3 weeks. Before making the semifinals at Tokyo, farthest Agnieszka made it was to the quaterfinals(9 separate occasions).

Hi AM!
Not sure about Medibank next year for Nole. I know he's already confirmed for Kooyong next year. ( i dont know if that has anything to do with Medibank, but I know both are before the AO)

Sorry about the lack of information.

On a side note, I did read that he has confirmed for the LA tennis open next year.

Come'on, Sveta!

go kuzzie.... im voting for you as class valedictorian of the day..... please win your dead rubber...

I am going for Sevta, she played some great shots yesterday in her match with Venus.I have always been a fan.

Sveta was asked a question about something regarding Venus & Elena & I heard her say, Venus--does anyone know what the question was?

If Elena wins,I would like to Caro to go through, probably, as she'll have much easier time against injured Caro than Vika (who can self-distruct, but if she plays without meltdowns can be a real challenge) I need to check H2H of Lena vs Vika...

Just found this: regarding Medibank.

2010 Players

Confirmed players for Medibank International Sydney 2010

Serena Williams
Sam Stosur
Elena Dementieva
Victoria Azarenka
Lleyton Hewitt
Gael Monfils
Tomas Berdych
Stanislas Wawrinka

lollipop Well if thats the case,he may not play Medibank.I will keep checking the site.

Beth,
Buy your tickets to LA as Juan Martin and Novak have committed. Surprise that Novak would start his USO Series season early in 2010.

Who did Gulbis lose to, which round and by what score?

Has anyone a link to this match please?

Lollipop,
Add Caroline to the Sydney list.

@mirzai....

aggie ends this season quite well, yet she had a wonderful season last year winning in three different surfaces... one note is that aggie reached about 8 quarters this year... which is good though.... still aggie is aggie, she's fun to watch...

go sveta... you know you can win this... polish yoUR GARROS trophy in front of lena, show her who's the champ!!!

ok AM more info now. Kooyong is from Jan, 13-16 and Sydney's from Jan. 10-16, so unfortunately I dont think Nole will play Sydney.

MA- yes. sorry about that.

I can't pick between Elena and Kuzz as I like both girls equally so will just say good luck to both of them.

"aggie ends this season quite well, yet she had a wonderful season last year winning in three different surfaces... one note is that aggie reached about 8 quarters this year... which is good though.... still aggie is aggie, she's fun to watch..."

U must be happy every week then, pat, cos she plays every freakin week.

@aussiemarg..

hi aussiemarg... late night watching again.... i hope vee starts in sydney too, she needs to be familiar with the atmosphere and humidity in australia.... her choice of hongkong as a stop before aussie open porved her only one quarterfinals and one 4th round appearance in aussie open....

Davai, Lena!!!!!

http://www.atdhe.net/7920/watch-wta-championships-doha

Hit THAT ball, Sveta!

""And I don't agree with Nadal that he should have kept it under wraps either, it's a big part of his life-story and the trials that he went through, so why shouldn't he get it off his chest in his autobio?"

True...but Rafa and Murray and others were against the inconvenient restrictions of the drug testers...the timing of this revelation does not support their cause.

Do you think WADA and ITF will listen to tennis players now grievances about drug testing inconveniences now?"

ladyjulia : Good points. Do you think the authorities will tighten up the testing procedures even further in light of these revelations? I remember someone once linking an article suggesting that the procedures are very lenient and infrequent compared to other sports.

yeah babe....happy at the same time frustrated... she keeps losing to players who dominates her.... though she gave vee a scare in miami, i still love the shots she produced there.... and i also am frustrated how she can't dissect her friend, MaKiri's game....

still loving her game, yet she really needs considerable power..

i believe elena won their last hard court match in dubai.... doha/dubai...dubai/doha.... hope sveta's not afraid of fate... fate decides that lena will win this match.... hope sveta's hair stand up to the fate's challenge....

"still loving her game, yet she really needs considerable power.."

I'll say!

Pat Venus always plays that Hong Kong Expo,Maria Sharapova too.

I think players need to get match play on the Plexicushion for starters, also to get used to the hotter playing conditions as well.

Still no confirmation that Justine will play Medibank, though our sports radio station here in Sydney says she will?

I would love to see Rafa play Medibank again, without having to pull out with injury Sigh!

Lena holds at love to get to 2-2, serving well and deciding with her second shot (when the return went in). Kuzzy missed an easy BH in the first point of the game.

"I think players need to get match play on the Plexicushion for starters, also to get used to the hotter playing conditions as well."

Isn't the Oz now on regular hardcourt?

Master Ace Seeing that Serena is picked in the USA Fed cup team,I suppose no word if any on her suspension by the ITF will happen till that is concluded.

AM: so far any info on where Rafa would play in the leadup to AO'10?
this year he played only at Doha before heading to Melbourne and starting his rigorous practice, right?

Sveta is hitting some great great shots. Without pressure, she should win this match--cos all she has to lose is money.

Babe Yes,Plexicushion is the h/court surface.

Kuzzy holds at 15 to go up 3-2. Good quality so far in this match, with both players going for their shots once they have the chance, and doing it well most times. The player serving is dominating the points that i've seen.

Arun I havent been to his site to check on that recently.he is playing that expo again with Roger on New years Eve which I dont agree with.I am not a fan of expos.I think players who are coming from Europe need to play a tournament under our condtions also this surface.Thats just my thoughts.

AM- did u see my post at 11:44?

Unfortunately dont think nole will play Sydney. :(

Arun,
I would assume he'll do the same he did last year, since it worked very well. The guy is known for being quite stubborn about his schedule.

Hi there,
Didn't watch the JJ-Caro match - but do you think Wozniacki was simply done after her feat yesterday, or did she save herself for a possible semi against Serena, hoping Radwanska would help her through later tonight? She's a smart girl, you know (and pretty tough, too:-)

my stream is terrible, freezing all the time, frustrating...

lolipop yes I did,I agree with you.I dont think he will play Sydney seeing he is playing at Kooyong.

same here sokol...

"Didn't watch the JJ-Caro match - but do you think Wozniacki was simply done after her feat yesterday, or did she save herself for a possible semi against Serena,"

There was nothing to save--NOTHING! She needed to win to ensure passage. She probably won't make it as I believe Vika will prevail.

ugh the serving woes continue..

Arun Is Roger playing Kooyong next year? reading that he hasnt confirmed there as yet.Though he always plays there before the AO.

I LOVE it when Sveta plays like this.
