So if I'm Team USA Fed Cup Mary Jo Fernandez, I call Alexa Glatch and Melanie Oudin into the locker room, sit them down real close to me, look them in the eye, and say, "Girls, we go 'em right where we want them!" Try to give them a little confidence - better deluded than dispirited, right? It look's like the USA's back is really up against the wall against this nicely balanced, talented, spirited team of Italian veterans who won both of yesterday's singles in the Fed Cup final at Reggio Calabria, Italy. Neither Flavia Pennetta (who beat Alexa Glatch) nor Francesca Schiavone (who topped Melanie Oudin after a tight, tiebreaker first set).

Reggio Calabria - isn't he Roland Garros's second cousin?

Anyway. The other big news of the day was Novak Djokovic's match-point dismissing win over Radek Stepanek, which earned the Djoker a place opposite Roger Federer in the Basel final. Federer is the definition of "classic" as well as "classy" in tennis, so it only figures that he's on the cusp of winning the tournament where he once worked, dreamy-eyed, as a ballboy. This kind of thing, unsurprisingly, happens quite often in tennis. So maybe you should forget all those expensive tennis lessons and set aside the brochure from the IMG Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy and just send your kids out to ballboy at any event they can find.

Anyway, have a good Sunday, I'll be back tomorrow morning with some red meat.

-- Pete

first!?

Second

second

James, I guess you meant 'third'... ;)

Mornin' all. I'm waiting for MA to wake up and post the schedule of play for the day....not used to having to look it up myself:)

Copied from MA's post last night:

Basel
Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic vs Bob Bryan vs Mike Bryan at 7 AM
Roger Federer vs Novak Djokovic at 9:15 AM

Valencia
Frantisek Cermak and Michal Mertinak vs Marcel Granollers and Tommy Robredo at 7 AM
Andy Murray vs Mikhail Youzhny at 10 AM

Bali - Marion Bartoli vs Aravane Rezai at 1:30 AM

Fed Cup - Tennis Channel to broadcast matches LIVE at 5 AM

any live stream at Basel. thanks

Looks like Blake/Santoro about to start.

WAKE UP MA!! (This is hard work trying to be as informative as MA)

Does anyone know any sites where I can watch Federer And Nole live? For free..

Helen: no streams yet at atdhe.net, but channelsurfing.net appears to have streams for both valencia and basel.

Mr. and Mrs. D. Thanks

Here's to hoping Roger wins his 4th straight Basel title.

Mr. and Mrs. D. , thank you very much!

how about a nice Bronx cheer for the nincompoops at TTC..tape delayed finals!

'morning folks.

Go to channelsurfing.net and then scroll down until you find Basel. It's very easy. :)

AM: you around? rafa website is really lame. Juan Monaco can't possibly be a childhood friend of rafa's since he's from argentina. It's possible they've known each other for a long time but...still it would be fun doubles to watch.

Morning, all.

TennisTV.com informs me that the live event will be starting shortly. What ho!

In the meantime, astronomy buffs out there might be interested by this blog by Ethan Siegal, with a jumping off point to Ethan's ratings of the biggest events in astronomy by decade. Good stuff if you sometimes get the timing of the discovery of cosmic inflation mixed up with the introduction of oversize racquets:

http://scienceblogs.com/startswithabang/2009/07/the_last_100_years_1998_and_th.php

yf: they've chosen to show fedcup live. wouldn't have been my first choice but i kinda can't blame 'em.

Hi everyone.
First things first. Bravo, Flavia. Bravissimo.
http://estaticos04.marca.com/imagenes/2009/11/08/tenis/1257683209_extras_noticia_foton_7_0.jpg
Yes, she's all kinds of awesome. Not a big surprise in the outcome though.
So i see Nole had quite a tough tme yesterday with the Worm. That guy is not easy to beat anywhere, and he sure will be dangerous in December.
In Valencia, looks like Lestat is reappearing slowly, and he just drained FeVer, whose head got in the way once again.
Waiting for the Basel final to start. I'm hoping for Nole, but Fed is the obvious favourite.

Go Rogi. It's high time you defended a title this year :)

If he won't have a second-set walkabouts, Roger in two. If it gets to three, I'll get antsy, given their earlier matches this year.

I'm worried, becuase the last time I thought Roger would storm through an opponant in a final, I found myself sitting teary eyed on a subway train from flushing meadows to Forrest Hills.

I have ATPTV ready, hopefully it work better than it does at home, apperantly my router is the reason why it's buffering so badly.

TennisTV.com informs me that the live event will be starting shortly. What ho!

For free?

Thanks Andrew....saving it for my son to check out.

Basel final: i doubt it's for free but maybe you got lucky! did you log in? It's definitely a pay site and imo worth every penny.

No, not for free.

Hometown boy getting on court to a huge ovation. That must be the only red court in the tour. I like some variety.
"I want it all" is the music. Doesnt he have it all already?:)

Players on court. Bit mean of the spotlight guy to try and lead Djokovic off the stage, but you have to expect this in Basel when you play the local favorite.

The Master just stepped in. All rise.

Sunday Order of Play

Basel
Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic defeated Bob Bryan vs Mike Bryan 6-2,6-3
Roger Federer vs Novak Djokovic to start shortly

Valencia
Frantisek Cermak and Michal Mertinak defeated Marcel Granollers and Tommy Robredo 6-4,6-3
Andy Murray vs Mikhail Youzhny at 10 AM

Bali - Aravane Rezai defeated Marion Bartoli 7-5(retired - left quad strain)

Fed Cup - Italy wins tie 4-0 over United States
Flavia Pennetta defeated Alexa Glatch 6-3,6-1
Francesca Schiavone defeated Melanie Oudin 7-6(2),6-2
Flavia Pennetta defeated Melanie Oudin 7-5,6-2
Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci defeated Liezel Huber and Vania King 4-6,6-3,11-9

Ajde Nole! Actually I'm just hoping for a competitive match.
I really like the red court. classy and different.

yesterday the commies described Basel as the Monte Carlo of Switzerland.

Djoker vs Rog in a final! Always a juicy one!

Djoker vs Rog in a final! Always a juicy one!

i believe Rogi is gonna remain a ball-boy in Basel.

Kick ass, Roger.

Two sets, plz. You still have a lot of work to do this year.

does anyone know where we can watch the Basel final LIVE?
Lets go Roger!

channelsurfing.net

Spanish commentators informing that Fed has played 13 tournaments this year, while Nole has played 23. Well, that's quite an efficient year by Fed, i would say:)

Annie
like yesterday, Fed cup is finished and the mens matches are just getting started or still in progress... somehow they couldn't manage to make time for live broadcasts, of the ONE sport that they cover! How many jerks in a boardroom does it take to figure out that fans want to see live tennis.
so instead of live tennis they are going rerun some of their old programming...meanwhile I will watch the match on a spotty stream online and probably get so frustrated by the buffering, that I will just give up and check the results later

haha I agree with Mr. X

and thank you Annie

Roger vs Novak
http://atdhe.net/7637/watch-atp-basel

Did i hear that correctly? Fed has yet to be broken this week?
39 service games won. outstanding.

Fed holds at 15 to start the match, starting the game with 2 unreturned serves and taking advantage of 2 long FHs by Nole.

I guess I would have to pay. A video does come up, but blank. (TennisTV)
Oh well, I'll just watch live scores. hehe

Napred Nole! Ajde Srbine!!

yf: didn't realize Fed cup was already over. That IS ridiculous.

baselfinal: try the stream that was just posted above.

Hmmm, Nole seems quite determined.

Nole holds at love to get to 1-1. He started the game with an ace, then Fed sent 2 2nd serve returns that he was trying to be very agressive with out, and Nole close with an OH in the last point. Early stages still.

http://www.fromsport.com/video-108254.html

Fed holds at 30 to go up 2-1. He got several easy points with his serve in that game, that made the couple of BH errors he made irrelevant.

Three solid service games, and we're underway, 2-1 Federer on serve. Not much to say - first serves are mostly serve winners, second serves lead to rallies. Djokovic putting more mustard on his second serve than he did in Cincinnati, which is smart.

http://channelsurfing.net/watch-davidoff-swiss-indoors-basel.html

This one working well so far, English language.

Hi everyone!

Yup, better serving from Nole... um, or not. DF as a result of that mustard you've mentioned, Andrew.

Andrew - didn't get to tell you yesterday really enjoyed your comments;)).

Nole with punishing groundies.

Roger need to be very solid on serve here.

Nole holds at 15 to get to 2-2, after Fed sends a return long. The only point he lost there was a DF, but he is doing very well in the baseline rallies, being agressive, keeping Fed behind the baseline and closing at the net.
Now, he needs to find the way to attack Fed's serve. Not an easy task, though.

Half volley winner from the baseline after decent return by Novak

jan: thanks. Still on serve, 3-2 Federer. Two ridiculous points by Federer - a flowing BH winner and a half volley BH winner from the baseline. But Djokovic has started well, with a good game plan, too.

Fed holds at 15 to go up 3-2, after a crazy half volley winner from the baseline answering a good return by Nole, How the heck does the freakin' guy do that?
At 30-15, Nole was again dominating the rally and keeping Fed behind the baseline, but he hit one of those loopy FHs imjimmy usually criticises and Fed made him pay with a BH winner.

Can't get a single stream to work for me :(
Back to scoreboard following instead!Typically,it would have been on in the UK on Eurosport, but apparently they withdrew their coverage because of the whole 'tobacco sponsor' controversy...

morning twibe! good match so far - both men playing well i think.

Nole holds at love to get to 3-3. I'm liking his attitude. No nonsense, no happy-go-lucky guy. Just going for his shots, being agressive most times and hitting his FH with deep and strength (most times)

i just noticed that fed seems to match the lines people's uniforms. :)

geesh - these guys are playing paint the lines tennis today.

Both guys very much at the top of their service games.

Roger need to start returning better, right now he has issues. Nole playing more aggressive than in the USO, and less errors, too.

Two more holds, 4-3 Federer. Mr. X is right - Djokovic is taking the ball on early, like Chiudinelli yesterday. Nice aggression.

However, Fed is close to impossible to break when he serves this way. Again, a couple of aces in this game, and another serve that gave him a very clear lead in the point. When he gets a look at a 2nd serve, Nole is doing well, and he is dominating most rallies. Good BH by Fed in the first point of that last game though.
Nole to serve, down 3-4.

"Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci defeated Liezel Huber and Vania King 4-6,6-3,11-9"

Well, at least doubles went to twenty games in the third set.
*glass determinedly a fifth full*

(Come to think of it, a bit of a fifth would go down easy right around now, but I'd have to walk to a bar to get to it. Maybe later, especially if there's any second set brain cramping...)

Fed cannot get into Nole's service games at all. The few chances he's had, he's made errors.

I think he's won five points on Nole's serve, two of them DFs.

Unless someone has a brain cramp (yes, i'm looking at you, Nole), this looks like it's going to a TB, as Nole holds at 15 to get to 4-4. Again, the only point he lost was a result of a DF (he's trying to be very agressive even with his 2nd serves, so it's normal). Otherwise, he's serving well. He had some help from Fed there, in the form of a couple of FH UFEs.

Quality serving + aggression from Nole, which is what I remember him from 2007 -early 2008.

Can't say that pleases me right now.

And Oh, Oh. Roger with a silly bh into the net.

Peg,
That is the supertiebreak score on the Fed Cup doubles match and not a full set.

Ughhhhhh. 2 BP.

Save, Rogi!

Shit.

YES! COME ON NOLE!

And shockingly, it's Fed who plays a terrible serve game, with a DF, 2 FH UFEs and one BH UFE. Nole breaks to go up 5-4 and will serve for the set next.
Now, try not to do anything stupid.

Djoko takes 5:4 lead. Breaks...will serve for the set.

And Federer donates a break to Djokovic: DF, BH error in the net, FH long, FH net cord wide. Under no pressure, just steady play from his opponent. Tsk. 5-4 Djokovic.

Unlucky bounce give Novak the chance to serve for the set

Man is broken. At the crucial 9th serve. Oh well. This set is as good as gone. Such high quality of serves for about 8 games...

How long has it it been since Nole took a first set from Roger (excluding Australia 08). Toronto 07, right?

Hello JB!

0:30

Come on, break back!

and right on cue mr x - its fed w/ the brain cramp.

or - agreed, nole seems to be playing with the confidence, the nervelessness that he had back in 2007. which bodes well for him - and should sound a warning bell for the rest of the boyos!

*staggers in, still sleepy*

Mornin' all.

C'mon Nole!

Ack, so close.

He had too much time to think about the pass.

pfft. fed shouldn't have missed that passing shot - golden opportunity gone begging.

Damn, I thought that was in.

Classic Federer challenge.

Whoops. Thanks for the correction, MA.

*resets*

Well, at least the dubs went to a supertiebreak.

*resolutely still seeing the glass as partly full*

Error by Nole keeps Fed alive in the game.

BP, Roger tempting Nole in with the short ball.

And again, inches out.

Pffffff.

now, poor performance of Djok`s in the 10th game?? again, whenever he has to step up and finish his opponent he backs to the defense??!

AHHHHH, Roger! Stop doing that!

2 double errors in serving for set game???

Oh, Roger.

Another one into the net? At break point?

Good return keeps Rogi alive.

Come on, break!

Error by Fed, gives Nole another lifeline. c'mon man, serve. it. out!

too many unforced of Djoker's in the 1oth game??! not a sign of a true champ.
