The Deuce Club, 11.20

By Jackie Roe, TW Social Director
Evenin', TWibe! I'm still cracking up from last week's Deuce Club, which saw y'all recount your most embarrassing stories. If you missed it, make sure to go back and take a look! Next week is a big one, with the arrivals of the ATP year-ending championship (I still can't bear to call it the WTF) and Thanksgiving. I'm not sure which one I'm looking forward to more - probably depends on what happens at the tournament - but I do know this place'll be buzzing during what's normally a quiet time of the year. Feel free to use today's DC to discuss your predictions and/or frazzle over your favorite's draw, but hold those Thanksgiving thoughts and plans 'til next Friday, when I'll devote this post to the holiday. I didn't forget about those WTA Awards this time! Better late than never, right? Here are my picks; click here to see how everyone else voted.
Most Valuable Player: Serena Williams. Most Improved Player: This was tough. My gut tells me to go with Caroline Wozniacki ... but I'm giving Flavia Pennetta an honorable mention. Breakout Player: Melanie Oudin for the U.S. Open run alone. Most Disappointing Player: Going with the majority on this one - Ana Ivanovic. Best Rivalry: Serena vs. Venus is the easy choice. But Dinara Safina vs. the media was an interesting match-up, as well, as was Maria Sharapova vs. Jelena Jankovic, if only for the "Is her last name Jankovic?" quip. Match of the Year: Another obvious choice - Serena vs. Elena Dementieva at Wimbledon. Most Inspiring Moment: Kim Clijster's improbable U.S. Open victory. Most WTF? Performance: (tie) Vera Zvonareva having that spectacular meltdown vs. Flavia Pennetta and Svetlana Kuznetsova completely losing the plot vs. Wozniacki, both at the U.S. Open.
Looks like the USO was a pretty important tournament, huh. Note that I left out a few categories since this was running long, but I'm happy to share my thoughts on the others if you're interested. Just holler in the Comments.
Now on to today's topic - another one that'll help us to get to know one another better. Like last week's, it's inspired by something Andre Agassi-related, but again, I promise I won't get into any of the scandals! He recently completed Vanity Fair's Proust Questionnaire (here's the link), and it got me to thinking about how I'd answer the questions myself. So I decided to do just that; on the VF website, you can take the questionnaire and find out which luminary you most resemble. I was matched with Allen Ginsberg and Jane Goodall. Sure, why not ...
Taking the quiz was a challenge - but in a good way. I found the questions really thought-provoking, and at the end of it all, it gave me a greater understanding of myself. What makes me tick, what I aspire to, what I value in myself and others. And then, to see how others responded to the questions let me in on their inner workings, too. Not to mention, I liked that the questionnaire calls for pithy, short-and-sweet responses. That's part of what makes it so difficult to complete ... and so fun.
I thought it'd be a great idea for us to do this as a group. You can take the questionnaire on the VF site, of course, but then none of us would be privy to your responses! So let's do it right here instead, in the Comments. I cherry-picked my favorite questions out of the bunch, those that I thought would give us the greatest insight into who we all are and how we approach life.
Below are the questions I'd like y'all to consider, along with my answers. Go ahead and set yours up in the same way, and try to whip through 'em quickly so conversation keeps moving. Your initial reaction is probably the truest one, anyway, right? Here goes: What is your idea of perfect happiness? Any scenario involving my family, a beach, Korean food, music, and of course, tennis.
What is your greatest fear? A loss of control. (See why I don't drink?)
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? I put way too much pressure on myself. Goes hand in hand with perfectionism and OCD.
What is the trait you most deplore in others? Insincerity. Be real, dangit!
What is your greatest extravagance? Tennis trips! Heck, Indian Wells alone.
On what occasion do you lie? When telling the truth would only result in hurt feelings.
When and where were you happiest? I'd like to think it hasn't happened yet. If I had to go with something that has: As a child, being awoken by the sun on a Saturday morning, reaching for an Archie Comic or Nancy Drew mystery, and reading for hours in bed, with my sister Elizabeth doing the same right beside me.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? Just one? Maybe ... that I weren't such a crier.
If you could change one thing about your family, what would it be? That they all lived in the same town as me.
What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery? Not being able to express oneself.
How would you like to die? Quickly, quietly, and with a smile on my face.
Uh oh, now that OCD is making me want to revise all my responses ... guess that means it's time to turn it over to you! Answer away, and have a great weekend!

I'm here, Jackie. And i would like to say that i have also beaten NP.
What is Thanksgiving?:)
I've been looking at that photo, and apart from saying: "why is that guy in the right there?" (and Pete picked HIM to win the damn thing, unfreakingnbelieveable), i think i've noticed something that will probably get me a lot of heat: look at Nadal's forehead and tell me it's not getting bigger. Gee, the fangirls are gonn akill me for that:)
And go with your gut feeling and vote for the Hott Woz, Jackie. Dont join them meanies:) |

Jackie - clearly, from your answers, we were twins separated at birth. One of the differences would be, "on what occasions do you lie." I would answer, 'on random occasions.'
Oh, and MY family should be NO closer...lol...at least not on any kind of permanent basis. |

Hi Jackie!
Another great topic. That's some quiz. I wonder who is going to be the first one to answer it.
Thanks for including the pic of the WTF guys (lol).
I keep thinking why are Nole, Roger and Rafa smiling? What do they know that the others don't? :) |

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
My friends and family being healthy and happy.
What is your greatest fear?
That I should ever not stand up for what I believe in.
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
I can be really stubborn.
What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Hypocrisy.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Handbags and shoes. It's obscene how much I spend on them.
On what occasion do you lie?
When trying not to hurt someone's feelings.
When and where were you happiest?
I'd rather not say. But it was a beautiful time in my life.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
To not be so emotional. I cry at songs, football matches etc.
If you could change one thing about your family, what would it be?
Nothing. I love them as they are now.
What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
Not being proud of my actions.
How would you like to die?
Peacefully, in old age, in Ireland. |

Well, Emma, all i can say is that it's part of the game, i guess. But i remember how it feels (our guys were enormously robbed in Korea in 2002) and it's not fun.
And i'm afraid there's no chance they are gonna play it again.
OK, as usual, i'll do this little by little, so let's start:
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Let's see: big peaceful beach, lovely lady, all the time of the world would do just fine.
Or Spain winning the World Cup, that would also work:)
What is your greatest fear?
Being inside a falling plane. But it's kind of a figure of not having my life on my hands.
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
Lazyness. Problem is, there is another part of me that loves it intensely. |

loved emma's and jackie's answers. now i'll try:
My idea of perfect happiness?
Being with my children
what is my greatest fear?
illness. mine or anyone I love
what is the trait i most deplore in myself?
laziness
what is the trait i most deplore in others?
self-centeredness
what is your greatest extravagance?
if i had the money it would be travel.right now, nothing.
on what occasion do you lie?
to protect people i care about
when and where were you happiest?
i am hoping it is still to come
if you could change what thing about yourself what would it be?
not to be as lazy.
If you could change one thing about your family what would it be?
that we would be more accepting of each other
what do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
loneliness
how do you want to die?
quietly in my sleep |

Hi, Jackie !
great quiz - and I promise I will give you some answers - but first , I am so bummed I missed last week's conversation . I read through belatedly - and I would have had some beauties to share - but now , you will all just have to wait - maybe later today
now for these questions
greatest happiness ? Together with my husband and children - preferably somewhere warm - but as long as we are together , life is good
greatest fear ? heights - in open places . Planes or high rises do not freak me out - but standing on a cliff or an observation deck really gives me a panic attack
trait I most deplore in myself ? I tend to worry over things that I have no control over - sadly this is much like my mother , and it makes me crazy
most deplore in others ? close mindedness
greatest extravagance - clothes , shoes and purses - duh
on what occasion would I lie ? when the truth would be hurtful to an innocent party
when and where were you most happy ? I would have to say that I am happiest right now, where I am - I have been happy in the past , and will be in the future - but all I have is now - so I am going to make the most of it
what one trait about me would I change ? impatience
change in my family ? in my immediate family - nothing . Now about my in laws...
lowest depth of misery ? watching my children be hurt by the thoughtlessness or meanness of others -
how would I like to die ? surrounded by loved ones at a very old age - hopefully in my sleep |

Well, AM, i dont see how it could get worst, considering i count the demerit cards i have by millions...AND MILLIONS:)
As for NP's place, i'm afraid there are no WalMarts here, and the equivalents dont have CBs on stock. And nothing could make me be a Sampras fan:)
OK, more answers (see, i told you i'm lazy):
What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Beleiving that they can go over you, and they are superior. I guess arrogance would be the word.
What is your greatest extravagance?
When i'm working, i love listening to old broadcasts of a particular Spanish sports programme. It's very funny, and i often start laughing out of nowhere. They are mostly broadcasts of the SuperBowl, actually.
On what occasion do you lie?
When it's the best thing to do, for everybody. And i have told a couple of lies when trying to get a lady:)
When and where were you happiest?
Um, this is tough, but being at the beach with my older cousins in a day with lots of waves when i was a kid comes to mind

Sorry Jackie, I posted and left.
Those questions are deep. Gotta give then more thought.
There is one I can easily answer:
My worst trait:
Being impatient to the extreme (in particular in traffic) and that's what I'd change about myself. |
|

Annie- our idea of misery is the same.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Good and funny times with people that I love
What is your greatest fear?
Being horribly disfigured
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
My inability to be content and frequent worrying
What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Prejudice
What is your greatest extravagance?
Clothing, travel and books
On what occasion do you lie?
To protect other people from hurt. Also- when I toot!
When and where were you happiest?
Censured :)
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Procrastination
If you could change one thing about your family, what would it be?
That I had some family members close by.
What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
Loneliness
How would you like to die?
Without pain, but with having said what I have need to said to people and with my financial things in order.

But I love all the photos of the players. There's some closeups of Roger, Rafael and Andy looking at each other - smoulderingly? amusedly? quizzically? - I can't tell. Rafael looks cute in spite of the rather strange hair. Roger looks very handsome. Sorry this is off topic but you did put that pic up! |

my last post has been absorbed into cyberspace
I shall try again
Jackie - I did see that you were compared to Regina George , Clearly by someone who has never met your sweet self .
although I did laugh about the mail truck incident , once I realized you were ok
see - the comparison to me and Regina is probably a more accurate one
Annie - watching my kids in pain was the worst . Such a helpless feeling. Thankfully , they have never been seriously ill - I am sure that would be the absolute depths of misery for a parent
AM - yep we are very similar in many ways |

OK, the end of my answers:
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I would make myself rich:)
Seriously, i would like to avoid letting my lazy side take control sometimes.
If you could change one thing about your family, what would it be?
I like my parents just fine, but i wouldnt have minded a brother and a sister, being an only son.
What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
Impotence. No, not THAT one:) I mean not being able to do anything about all the things happening to you.
Although THAT one wouldnt be half good:)
How would you like to die?
Not gonna be original here: old and asleep. |

Annie - I agree totally. You'd have thought the ATP would at least have them in matching styles and fabric but they all look different. If they've been cut by someone at Saville Row the ATP should ask for a refund
*smacks hand against head in disappointment!*
OK so answers to questions:
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Being with friends and family, or travelling somewhere new
What is your greatest fear?
Death - my own or my family's
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
Sometimes I don't believe in myself as much as I should
What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Lying.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Same as Jackie's - going to tennis tournaments. May have to cut back on that next year as I've spent way too much money on it this year. Was good fun though! WTF next week!
On what occasion do you lie?
Same as Jackie again. I'd tell a small lie to protect someone else's feelings. No major lies though!
When and where were you happiest?
So far, maybe when I got my degree result. Felt pretty happy this afternoon when we were having a laugh at work.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I'm pretty happy, but maybe to have more confidence professionally.
If you could change one thing about your family, what would it be?
Not sure I would. |

Mr. X, you've mentioned this lazy thing quite a few times. I'm beginning to think you're actually Rip Van Winkle ... ;)
BlueDog, great responses. Especially that lying one. :) |

Beaches rule, Jackie. The sights are usually great, too:)
Pspace,
After reading that, all i want to do is declare myself a finder on court No.3. Unfortunately, i would be lying:)
And word about the photo and the suits. Arms crossed or hands in your pockets is the way to go. Lestat looks particularly weird, by the way. Not only the jacket, the pants look quite bad too. |

Thanks, Annie!
SilentP! Hang on - how many tourneys did you attend last year? I was trying to figure out who's been to the most ... |

Mr X - good eye - the break of the pants on Murray's shoes is just wrong , wrong , wrong
amateur tailors were used , obviously
how did Anna Wintour let this happen ? Isn't she supposed to know this stuff - I mean even Fed looks bad in this suit . And that just does not happen
see , if I were in charge of ATP fashions, as I have volunteered my services , this travesty would not have happened.

I guess if you take a group of fairly good-looking guys, and put them in suits that don't fit, and make them all stand in a stiff awkward pose... you basically end up with a picture of eight dorks. |

LOL, Pierre. Very true.
I knew the pic would generate discussion. ;) |

Yes, Murray certainly looks peculiar in the photo, horrid trousers! JMDP looks a bit odd to. I love the name of Eeyore for him though. |

I have no idea who Rip Van Winkle is, Jackie. But yes, the lazy inside me sometimes takes control and i usually dont mind it. I can be hard working once i've started one task, but the getting to do it is usually the main problem. |

Pierre - I think that sums it up :)
AM - I remember we volunteered to do this job before
clearly , they need our help
In that little video - they handed them umbrellas for a prop - talk about cheesy
why not a bowler or a top hat and a monocle , too , if we are going to that London look
who put together this shoot ? The guy who is staging Mary Poppins , the musical ? |

A lesson learnt eight times over: don't fasten a single-breasted suit and then put your hands behind your back. They look like a bunch of students attending their first job interviews. |

Pierre - v funny and too true! I think it was on the you tube link someone put on here of a spanish report about today's press call, that showed the players posing in front of the red bus with umbrellas. Oh dear. Way too cheesey!! All they were missing was bowler hats at that point.
BlueDog - what am I supposed to say? i don't get it! Sorry!
Jackie - This year I've been to madrid, roland garros, wimbledon, US Open and now the WTF. My bank balance is looking very sad at the moment! |

jackie - no they did not look any better last year
no ties - brown suits with black shirts
not my favorite
Gilles clearly did not get the memo about where the hands were to be in the photo
seriously - why do they have to wear a uniform ? Don't they have clothes of their own ?
I am sure at this point in their careers they could afford a properly fitted suit of their own choosing
just say - wear a navy blazer and khaki pants - tie and shirt of your choosing
or wear a grey suit - or anything
then they could pick it out on their own |

You're still not the goat since you missed the AO (and the 'Grand Slam' in the process).

ooh jax this was a good one!
I've answered before reading either your answers or anyone else's. I'm running out to grab dinner - but will check out the rest of the thread when i get home. So here goes...
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Getting to a point where there’s an absence of want; and all regrets have been let go. I'm a work in progress... :)
What is your greatest fear?
That I will lose my mind (my ability to think and reason) AND my independence. The two are interconnected for me and I can’t imagine existence without both.
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
I too quickly see the obstacles. In the next moment I figure out how to get around them, but just once I’d like to see a clear path instead of the boulders I need to climb.
What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Lack of charity.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Good food shared with friends.
On what occasion do you lie?
When a small prevarication on my part will save someone else’s pride, and won’t effect anything material in the scheme of things.
When and where were you happiest?
I'm pretty happy now, however, a couple years ago I existed without some stressors I have now. Not sure I'd trade the good of the now for the absence of certain ishiness. So I'll have to dither on that one! :)
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I would like to be braver.
If you could change one thing about your family, what would it be?
NA
What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
Loss of my ability to make my own choices; ie the loss of independence.
How would you like to die?
Quickly.
