Dinara

by Bobby Chintapalli, TW Contributing Editor

Remember when you didn’t need a medical degree to talk about tennis? When bandages weren’t a girl’s best friend? When tennis player Dinara Safina actually played tennis? Those were the good, old days, weren’t they? Long ago my journalism professors discouraged starting an article with a question, so I suspect they would have advised against starting with four. Yet I can’t think of starting an article on a topic chock full of questions any other way. And while we’re at it here’s another one: What on earth is going on?

Pulling Out

Certainly not tennis for players who retired from the Family Circle Cup in Charleston this week. What can I say about poor Caroline Wozniacki and that fall in her semifinal match against Vera Zvonareva yesterday that you didn’t see played and replayed on TV a million times? Ouch!

Olga Govortsova retired with a left knee injury and Ayumi Morita and Elena Vesnina with a left adductor strain. Marion Bartoli pulled out with a condition that won’t make us pull out a medical dictionary though it might make us raise an eyebrow – dizziness. Victoria Azarenka, before she flew to Chicago then Rome and tweeted desperately to everyone for a flight to anywhere, pulled out of Charleston with a left hamstring injury she got in Marbella.

Other players also not playing much tennis include those who withdrew before the tournament even began:

- Sybille Bammer (Achilles injury)
- Kateryna Bondarenko (Left knee injury)
- Dominika Cibulkova (Right hip strain)
- Casey Dellacqua (Right foot injury)
- Alisa Kleybanova (Plantar fasciitis)
- Viktoriya Kutuzova (Back injury)
- Sabine Lisicki (Left ankle injury)
- Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (Foot injury)
- Maria Sharapova (Right elbow injury)
- Serena Williams (Left knee injury)

And the tennis players who are “lucky” enough to play tennis, aren’t lucky enough to do so without bandages. Watching matches at the event for four days I saw only two or three players who weren’t wearing bandages at some point. They could be to aid recovery, prevent injury or just provide “support” – the point is, these days they’re always there. Singles finalist Vera Zvonareva still wears an ankle brace a year after injuring her right ankle in a horrible fall at this tournament last year (though she said yesterday she feels like she’s finally fully recovered); she eventually ended up getting surgery and tumbling out of the Top 20. And the other finalist, Sam Stosur, casually mentioned that she sprained her ankle last week.

Figuring It Out

So what is going on? Well, a few veteran players have some ideas.

Patty Schnyder, who turned pro 16 years ago, pointed to the greater depth of the game: “[The] competition is really tough. The top level maybe it’s the same, but it’s like the density between 10 and 40, 50 that’s really improved a lot in the women’s game. So you don’t get many free rounds and easy rounds to warm up. You really have to be sharp… in the very first match… that takes a lot of energy.”

Nadia Petrova, who turned pro 11 years ago, cited the increase in power and the number of tournaments played: “First of all, the level of game is getting higher. It’s getting more powerful, and you really have to push yourself further in the matches, and that creates some kind of injuries. But then a lot of girls are playing way too many tournaments and they just don’t have enough time to get the body some rest and work on some fitness so they stay stronger.”

Vera Zvonareva, who turned pro 10 years ago, thought scheduling was part of the problem: “The schedule is very tough for players. Right now it’s pretty much the same schedule for everybody, but everyone is different. Everybody has different level of fitness, different bodies, different results, different amount of matches that they played in the previous weeks. So it is very difficult to manage and schedule it. And sometimes you’re forced to play a lot of events when you’re tired, and that’s most of the times when injuries are coming, when your body is not fresh.”

Another possibility may be the length of the off season. Tennis’s off season seems rather short compared to other sports. Surely there are other factors too.

But if something doesn’t change, that can’t be good for these young, young players, fans or the game both love.

RG Nadal I still think she is deciding last time I heard.

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 04:14 AM

sisan Well I will go back and read it.No worries.I must of missed it myself.I have been trying to do a million things at once today.

Posted by susan 04/21/2010 at 04:17 AM

AM you were deep into the b-ball game!
in a nutshell, he describes a scenario where nadal may return to no. 1 by the start of Wimbeldon (if he wins certain clay tourneys, if roger wins or loses this-or-that, etc). that's about it. back to work.

Posted by susan 04/21/2010 at 04:23 AM

ok it's wimBLEdon. off again.

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 04:27 AM

Susan Thanks for giving it to me down pat.Theory is a wonderful putting it into practice well thats another thing lol!

We Gonna See No?

zenggi have the photos come off the ATP site already. Mind you there were no really close up shots. The backdrop look fabulous.

Posted by zenggi 04/21/2010 at 05:00 AM

Angel,

Sorry, Angel, but I had to attend a meeting. Yes, I saw the pictures. The Mediterranean always look beautiful.

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 05:36 AM

Gee I have just been over to Steves current blog.I posted on Sam and Rafa winning their titles and you guessed it,it erupted into you know what LOL!

When will this end.Borg,Laver all the past greats got a mention as well so not that bad.

Manuel.I agree with your thoughts 100% on Borg.He was a true visionary of the game. Also he is still the fittest tennis athlete I have seen. His body didnt break down like Rafa's at all.

Some Rafa fans still have their Rafa Rose Coloured Glasses on.Oh well let them lol!

=========

You're right, he is describing a scenario where Nadal may return to no. 1 by the start of Wimbeldon (if he wins certain clay tourneys, if roger wins or loses this-or-that, etc). And I can even agree to that. A scenario that could certainly happen since by the end of RG, Federer leads by a paltry 70 points, Estoril not included. Even if Estoril is included, that would be not of help anyway if Federer fails to win Wimbledon. My main problem was with his citing of points for the clay court season. Nadal winning the whole thing by the end of RG will have a total of 8700 by my calculation and not 8600. Come Wimbledon, it is a different matter as Nadal has no points to lose. Also, he says that “after pulling out of Barcelona on Monday for a well-earned rest, Nadal has the potential to grab 5000 points from the clay season if he wins all three of his remaining tournaments on clay, following his victory at Monte Carlo”. By all three, I take it to mean Rome (1000), Madrid (1000) and RG (2000). By my calculation, that would be 4000 points, not 5000.

I should probably add also that for the grass season, he talks about the potential 2500 points for Nadal to win. Queens is an ATP 250 event plus Wimbledon is 2000 and that makes it 2250 points, unless Nadal has another grass tournament he is scheduled to play.

Again, I may be wrong on the figures so feel free to correct me. But if I am right, then all I can say is that at least, he should check his facts before citing any numbers.

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 05:48 AM

For the last and final time

Unless Rafa is injured he cant skip Madrid. It is a mandatory Masters event. So Rafa fans can wish all day long.It cant happen this year.Next year he has the opportunity under the atp rule to be able to miss one Masters event.

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 06:01 AM

AA I am just watching Hey,Hey Its Saturday and Dickey Knee just popped up lol! I was just reminded what you said about Verdsaco the other day.

Posted by ladyjulia 04/21/2010 at 06:52 AM

Suze,

Yes, I think your calculations are right.

It all boils down to the GS that Federer must defend. I think Rafa is a big shoo-in for RG title, and Roger may or may not reach the finals of RG. If he does, he makes it easier for himself. If he dosen't, he is in big trouble regards the ranking.

The chances of defending Wimbledon are high, after all the only match he has lost in six years there is a close five setter. I don't remember whether Federer played Halle last year. But he's got to perform at a high level at MS also if he wants to make it easier for himself to hold on to the ranking.

All in all, i think the rankings might switch a bit back and forth this year. I won't be surprised if either Roger or Rafa end the year as No. 1.

Posted by rg.nadal 04/21/2010 at 06:58 AM

Oh no!

Hewitt lost to evil Eduardo! :-(

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 07:06 AM

RG Nadal Hell no.I was doing something else and havent been checking the SB

Was it in straight sets?

Posted by rg.nadal 04/21/2010 at 07:12 AM

AM: Yeah. Straight sets- 7-6 6-4!

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 07:13 AM

RG It will be interesting to see how he pulls up after this.

Posted by rg.nadal 04/21/2010 at 07:18 AM

AM: Poor guy. think he has his sights set on the grass-court season (if you can call it a season i.e)!

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 07:21 AM

RG Well he has to get through the clay first.RG being the best of 5 too.

Posted by rg.nadal 04/21/2010 at 07:23 AM

AM: Since it is 5 sets, he may reach the 4th round at least if he does not face the big dudes. I think if he is not rusty by then he can take out the likes of Almagro, Verdasco etc who are not known for their consistency!

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 07:25 AM

RG I see the doubs combo of Almagro/Lopez Rafa's sometime doubs partner have won their match.

Posted by Suze 04/21/2010 at 07:26 AM

Ladyjulia, no he didn't play Halle in 2009 as he wanted to rest after RG as he played several 5-setters there. He also withdrew in 2007, citing fear of injury and fatigue. It's a pity because he had great chances to win in both and could have made it a 7th straight win last year if he did. But he knows his body best.

Yes, I absolutely agree that Nadal is a big shoo in for RG. I'm actually glad that he is the clear favorite and not Federer. It takes off the pressure I think.

Posted by rg.nadal 04/21/2010 at 07:28 AM

Yeah. That too in straight sets! Tsonga too won his first set.

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 07:30 AM

RG Gee Joe should be able to beat that opponent he though clay isnt Joes best surface

I havent heard from Greenhopper in ages I hope she is ok.

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 07:36 AM

Earnie and Chardy are about to start their match

Posted by zenggi 04/21/2010 at 07:42 AM

Just in time for Gulbis-Chardy. Come on, Jeremy. Use your good looks to please us (Peg and I are waiting...)

My Dutch player, Thiemo won. Yay!!.
He just send a message through Twitter: "Won 76 63! First set I was struggling but managed to take it! Second set played well! And now..... Doping again:( Do I look that strong?"

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 07:44 AM

zengii lol!

I must say Chardy is a good looker.Though I am a Earnie fan.

Posted by rg.nadal 04/21/2010 at 07:45 AM

zenggi: Doping again?????

AM: I did not know Greenhopper was a she! I think she is fine. She did tweet few days back.
Me nevr been a JoWTs fans, unless when he was/is playing Novak!

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 07:46 AM

Another good looking young Spainish guy is that Daniel Traver I think his surname is.I saw him play in MC.

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 07:47 AM

RG Well Greenhopper has posted here for awhile

Posted by zenggi 04/21/2010 at 07:48 AM

rg,
He means that he has to pass a doping control after the match. If you see him he is very thin that's why he is making a joke of it.

AM,
You are contradicting me today all the way :).

Samaranch has died. He was 89 years-old. He was a great COI president. He put Spain on the map as well. Sports wasn't a top priority in that country when he was appointed. Great work he did. I'm really sorry.

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 07:50 AM

zengii I am sad too.He did some wondeful things world wide as well.

See we just agreed.

Posted by rg.nadal 04/21/2010 at 07:54 AM

zenggi: ok..

AM:U shud tweet too!

Posted by Master Ace 04/21/2010 at 07:54 AM

"Mary Joe Fernandez' blog says that Elena Dementieva and Ekaterina Makarova stopped by after their practice to help out with the kids clinic today. Nice!"

Coby,
I knew I saw Elena on TV at the kids clinic singing autograpts before I went to sleep. There is a park called George Ward that has tennis courts for people to play,

Posted by Angel of the Surf (The Youz for the Top 10) 04/21/2010 at 07:54 AM

zenggi, Jeremy Chardy my fav frenchie. He is so lovely. Oh well back to the drawing board for Hewitt.

Posted by zenggi 04/21/2010 at 07:54 AM

AM,
Lucky us. It would be something having a row at a distance.
But Jeremy is mine (and Peg's).
They are on serve. 2-2 Your player to serve.

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 07:59 AM

zengii Well Qantas are now flying. So I suppose I could get a flight over.

Posted by zenggi 04/21/2010 at 08:00 AM

Angel,
You are welcome to the "Jeremy fav frenchie club".
I cannot find a working stream. I hope my son remembered to program de DVD-recorder.

Is Hewitt all-right?. It doesn't mean much to lose on clay against an Argentinian (or an Spanish) player. I hope he finds his form for Rome. He is fun to watch.

Gulbis finds himself again on deuce on his serve. 3-2 Jeremy to serve.

Posted by Master Ace 04/21/2010 at 08:01 AM

Rg.nadal,
No word on Venus on playing or not playing this weekend. If not, Sloane Stephens or Julia Cohen will get her slot which will put Bethanie Mattek-Sands playing Elena Dementieva on Saturday.

Posted by Angel of the Surf (The Youz for the Top 10) 04/21/2010 at 08:02 AM

zenggi at least I am in good company with you and Peg.

Streams start tomorrow.

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature) 04/21/2010 at 08:03 AM

AM: now please don't get mad at me. I know you've lost your patience on the topic of Madrid but can't Rafa w/d from Madrid after Rome is over citing his sore knees as the reason? Isn't that a good enough reason to miss Madrid? If he has a Dr.s note saying that he should rest?

Or the worst case scenario, but I can't imagine it, would be rafa would play his first round at Madrid and tank/retire or whatever. Boy that would be making a statement to the atp and the evil blue lord. He'd be saying "I'm a grown man and a professional and you're not going to tell me what tournaments I have to play."

oh good morning folks!

Posted by Angel of the Surf (The Youz for the Top 10) 04/21/2010 at 08:07 AM

Morning Annie
Trust you had a nice sleep.

I cannot see Rafa tanking in a first rd match no matter what condition he is in.

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 08:07 AM

Annie Can you imagine the flak he would get for that?.I know Rafa will always have a ongoing knee problem but you cant just "use" that as a excuse regardless.Knowing Rafa he would not dream of doing such a thing, well I hope not.Remember this is held in Spain as well.He is idolised. They expect him to play.

Posted by rg.nadal 04/21/2010 at 08:09 AM

MA: Thank you! I do wish the sisters showed a lil more commitment towards Fed Cup....well..

Annie: Hi there! Not a bad idea. He can withdraw complaining of giddiness! If he does that I already have my caption for Madrid ready "Murray for Madrid"! Rafa can win Madrid next year.

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 08:11 AM

RG Nadal LOL!! Murray to win Madrid.I just split my coffee over me lap top.

Posted by zenggi 04/21/2010 at 08:13 AM

Angel,
There are streams but I need advice from some computer expert to be able to watch them in the office.

Gulbis breaks 5-3. Ernst to serve for the set.

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 08:16 AM

Yay Earnest take the 1st set 6-3

Posted by rg.nadal 04/21/2010 at 08:16 AM

AM: All I can say is starnger things have happened. He is preparing hard in Barcelona now and he is a smart player. He would in no time figure out what is wrong in his game and work on it quick. Also, the fact that he reached the quarters at RG last year tells me to stay in the Murray camp (and he gets additional points for getting back with the love of his life!) :-D

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 08:18 AM

RG Well his movement on clay needs to get better for starters. When he comes to the net if reminds me of a "bull in a china shop"??

His head has to get fixed ASAP.Lets see how he goes in Roma first.

Posted by Angel of the Surf (The Youz for the Top 10) 04/21/2010 at 08:20 AM

Melzer has broken back to level at 5 games all. Don't know why but I kind of like the douchebag.

Posted by rg.nadal 04/21/2010 at 08:22 AM

AM: Yeah. Hope he does not get a Chela or a tough cookie like that in R1!

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 08:24 AM

RG Nadal Well Rome starts next Monday.I am not sure when the draw will be out.Master Ace will know I am sure.

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 08:26 AM

Sorry Chardy fans.Young Earnest gets a early break in the 2nd set

He has now consolidated his serve.Earnest 2-0 2nd set

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature) 04/21/2010 at 08:26 AM

Like I said, I couldn't see him doing that either. But I can envision him needing to heal the knees and getting a medical order for rest which I believe the atp would have to accept.

Posted by Angel of the Surf (The Youz for the Top 10) 04/21/2010 at 08:27 AM

Damn Gulbis has broken Chardy in the second set.

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 08:29 AM

Annie Of course he can supply the atp with a medical certificate

Imagine this.He wins Rome and then pulls out of Madrid?

I would not want to be on this board for starters.

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 08:31 AM

Earnest 3-0 got another break of serve

Yay Earnie!!!!!!

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 08:33 AM

Granola Bar v David Ferrer about to start.

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 08:35 AM

Earnie gets the double break 4-0

What has happened to Chardy?

I wish we had streams.

Posted by zenggi 04/21/2010 at 08:35 AM

Jeremy, what are you doing?. Oh well, Beckham will be very pleased :)

Ernests have the chance to make a deep run at a 500 as he most likely will face Gonzo tomorrow. What is up with Honey Badger as Granollers bar got the early lead?

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 09:12 AM

This tournament went down hill the moment Tommy had to retire with a back injury.

Posted by Master Ace 04/21/2010 at 09:22 AM

Aussiemarg,
LOL on Jack Bauer or Disco Tommy. Seems like Rafael not playing has put a damper on this tournament this week. Jo-W won easily today.

Posted by Aussiemarg,Madame President,Rafa Just Do It 04/21/2010 at 09:24 AM

Master Ace We must remember its not always about Rafa.I would like someone to stand up and do well here.Though I have players I dont wish to see win though lol!

Aussiemarg,
See Ferrer has won the last 9 games over Granola Bar.

Posted by Angel of the Surf (The Youz for the Top 10) 04/21/2010 at 10:08 AM

Good night people, talk to you all tomorrow.

Posted by crazyone 04/21/2010 at 10:31 AM

Ernie!!!! 6-3, 6-2 over Chardy is a good win...since he's playing Gonzo next, I think he has a decent chance. Not that Gonzo isn't one of the best clay courters around, but he's so freaking inconsistent that if Ernie catches him on an off day he should be able to win...

Posted by snowdrop 04/21/2010 at 11:03 AM

Hi everybody

For anyone interested, Ferrero-Stakhovsky :)

How in the world did Gonzo drop a set to an unknown ? He clearly must have been a bit rusty - but looks like he woke up

Yay for JCF !! Even with the wonky haircut - he is pretty!
And I join you all in saying - I love Chardy
( dammit ,now I am gonna be hearing that stupid song in my head again - thanks a lot Missie and Courtney )
sad that he lost , even if it was to Earnie
Chardy has been in a major slump lately - he and all the frenchies need to snap out of it - or there will be hell to pay when they get to Roland Garros

I'm watching Verdasco-Gasquet on the Spanish channel and I want those commentators to shut up NOW. Fernando wins 3-1 first set. Richard to serve.
