You have to hand it to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal; they sure know how to work the dramatic moment. They meet today for the first time in about a year, exactly a year, if you're observing the Gregorian calendar (the one named for Greg Rusedski, not the pope). Had you said, almost exactly a year ago, that Federer and Nadal would go 12 months before meeting again, people probably would have suggested you check yourself in for observation.

As Federer said, after surviving David Ferrer to reach the final:“After playing here last year you figured, maybe the French, Wimbledon or down the stretch in America at the latest we’ll face off again, but it just never ended up happening. It shows how incredible our last few years have been and I think it’s exciting for tennis and for us obviously that we can face off again.”

So what's really different, 12 months down the pike from the last meeting of these two gents? Well, both have known adversity, but Federer has also known glory. While Nadal was cooling his jets and icing his knees, Federer completed his career Grand Slam and added Grand Slam titles no. 15 and 16 to his resume. In the process, he also played a Wimbledon final that ranked second only to, well, the final he had played the previous year. Against Rafael Nadal. Which he lost.

Hmmm. . . . Could you concoct a more complex, subtext-laden scenario than the one the two men have written for today?  On balance, it has been a far better 12 months for Federer; a  year ago, he was just some guy with 13 majors to his credit. Nadal  had bagged the title in the first Grand Slam event of the year, beating Federer in Australia; given that Nadal had four straight French Open championships to his name (beating Federer each time, the last three times in the final) he seemed a lock to go 2-0 in majors for 2009. Then his knees gave out and his career, as well as his rivalry with Federer, was put on hold. With Nadal out of the picture until the summer of 2009, Federer feasted.

So where does that leave us for today? Oddly, right where back where we started, with Nadal in pursuit of Federer. But the venue for the renewal of their rivalry is the one where Federer is entitled to feel most comfortable and confident, at least as far as red clay courts go. He put a lot of stock in his win over Nadal in Madrid last year, while Nadal let it be known that he hadn't been all that pumped up about playing Madrid in the first place. The altitude and court speed in the Magic Box created relatively quick conditions: advantage, Federer.

But if Federer is meeting Nadal under the best clay-court conditions he might hope for, he also most be feeling the heat generated by Nadal over the past few weeks. Nadal struggled after returning to the tour last summer, and he's only played with the verve to which we've become accustomed this spring. Federer, by contrast, won the Australian Open this year, but he's had trouble bringing his A-game ever since. Once again, Federer is the hunted, Nadal the hunter. And if those are the terms under which Nadal has played his best, they may also create the circumstance under which Federer is most apt to play his best. Who else can make Federer feel cornered, or preyed upon?  Maybe it's the only circumstance that embodies a sufficiently existential threat to motivate Federer; we already know that he's cool with dropping the occasional match to a Tomas Berdych, Enests Gulbis, or Albert Montanes.

The big issues, to my mind, will be the match toughness of Federer and the degree of confidence felt by Nadal. Sure, Rafa has played great these past few weeks. But in the back of his mind, consciously or not, he must be asking himself: I've been through lots of changes in the past year, I've learned and grown a lot. I used to be automatic, but am I still the same guy who can go out there and play absolutely fearless tennis against the best player the game has ever produced? For Federer, the question is simpler but no less daunting. Nobody I've ever played hits the ball like this guy; can I still handle his pace and the action he generates when it comes to crunch time?

Feel free to post your comments before, during and after the match below. . .

ATP Final

Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal

Can you believe this is the first meeting since Roger won 4 and 4 at Madrid in 2009? Roger has finally decided to take that extra step this European clay season winning 2 three set matches this week against Ernests Gulbis and David Ferrer. Matter of fact, Roger last 3 matches were played after 8 PM local time while Rafael matches have been in the day so he is a little more rested than Roger. Speaking of Rafael, he is 14-0 in clay matches in 5 weeks so far losing only two sets(Gulbis in Rome and Nicolas Almagro today in Madrid). Rafael has not defeated a Top 8 player since Novak Djokovic in Madrid last year. Roger is trying to break a tie with Andre Agassi for most win in Master Series play and tie Andre and Rafael for most Master Shields at 17 while Rafael is trying to be the sole holder of Master Shields at 18 and in the process, be the first ATP player in the Open Era to sweep all Clay Masters. By the way, if I read correctly, Rafael will not be able to stop Roger from passing Pete Sampras for number 1 if Roger win tomorrow.

Prediction: Rafael Nadal to gain 800 points on Roger Federer in the race for number 1.

Posted by Master Ace 05/16/2010 at 07:06 AM

WTA Final

Aravane Rezai vs Venus Williams

Aravane is trying to be the WTA 2nd unseeded and surprise winner in two weeks with Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez winning Rome. She has defeated Justine Henin and Jelena Jankovic by playing first strike tennis off both wings. Aravane has had problems in closing out sets(or matches)this week. Aravane should have defeated Serena Williams in straight sets in Sydney but could not close out the match and Serena was able to complete the rally. Venus has defeated solid opponents in Vera Zvonareva, Francesca Schiavone, Samantha Stosur and Shahar Peer. All ladies mentioned have won a title except for Shahar, who as of now leads the WTA in wins but Venus could tie her tomorrow. Also, Venus will return to the number 2 spot in the world offically Monday

Prediction: Venus Williams will win her first red clay title outside of North America since Istanbul in 2005 while making a French Open statement.

Posted by Master Ace 05/16/2010 at 07:07 AM

ATP Doubles Final:

Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic(28-6) vs Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan(26-6)

Daniel and Nenad won Monte Carlo and Barcelona while the Bryans won Rome. Daniel and Nenad defeated 2 good teams this week in Kubot and Marach and the reigning French Open champions in Dlouhy and Paes. Meanwhile, the Bryans finally settled a score defeating Fyrstenberg and Matkowski and despite 14 break points in their semifinal match(converting only 3), they had to win the match 10-2 in the supertiebreak. Bryans will be trying to match the Woodies for the most ATP doubles title in the Open Era at 61. Also, Bryans won the last meeting in the final at the Australian Open.

Prediction - Daniel and Nenad defend their Madrid title denying the Bryans a chance to tie the Woodies.

Are we all frazzaling???? I sure am.
I'm with my fellow Fed fans I give Roger a 15-30% chance. How cool would it be if he did a reapet of last year, not just here but at RG and Wimby too, I a Fed fan so I'm greedy by definition :P.

I really don't like that picture of Rafa, I've got nothing against him, but the hair, and with all those millions can he get a suit that fits!!!

Think I'm gonna be pulling for Rezai in this one. Two players I'm pretty indifferent about, so going with the underdog. Would be huge if she won Premier Mandatory AND by beating Ju, JJ and Vee. History teaches us she won't be able to keep this level for long, but she's been fun to watch in Madrid. And she brings some always welcome bitchiness to the tour ;)

who sez american tennis is in the dumps!!? yay for the Bryan Bros, Yay for the Williams sisters(are they #1 in dubs too?)
so the US has the #1 mens and womens doubles players and the 1 and 2 ranked womens players...not too bad

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature) 05/16/2010 at 08:48 AM

The Bryans just broke the woodies doubles record! Congrats to them.

MA: I wanted to ask, did either of these pair beat Quizzner to get to the final? And thanks for your predictions for the singles finals. Everything points to Rafa, but like last year, Roger can do it all. So I am simply frazling.

cupcake lurker: believe it or not, that's a fancy unstructured jacket that rafa has on. very italiano, usually in silk. looks better in person than in the pic.

Posted by Master Ace 05/16/2010 at 08:50 AM

Annie,
John and Sam lost to Lukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach. Also, the Bryans tied The Woodies at 61.

Posted by GB 05/16/2010 at 08:50 AM

I am dying from the frazzle!!! Dying!!! I wish this was happening on a different surfrace, so that the outcome didn't feel quite so friggin huge for Rafa. I'm having nightmares about him coming out like yesterday and never getting into the match...

Karen: my heart and blood pressure would definitely prefer a quick Rafa beatdown, but a classic match would be so awesome. As long as Rafa wins, of course:) Imagine if you were somehow neutral and could just enjoy hopefully good tennis!

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature) 05/16/2010 at 08:50 AM

Posted by Jamaica Karen (Venus and Roger Madrid 10) 05/16/2010 at 09:04 AM

Well, leaving out at 9:00 my time (I am an hour behind you guys) so hopefully will be able to watch at least 30 minutes of Venus' match before I go, but believe it or not I get really tense and nervous when Roger plays Rafa as sometimes the outcome is already known. Last year's Madrid final I was also in church and was pleasantly surprised when I came home and he had won the match. Also at last year's FO final I was also in church but checking scores via Blackberry. When I saw that he was 2 sets to one up, I immediately got up, took up my Bible, purse, bowed to the altar and was out of there. Man, I drove so fast I thought the police would stop me. I got home and had tears in my eyes along with Roger when he got to match point. After all the disappointments on Sundays in May at the FO, for this Roger fan it was just wonderful to see him finally winning the FO. Perhaps that is the reason why I am so easy about today's match. If Rafa wins, congrats to him and his millions and MILLIONS of fans. If Roger wins congrats to him and his millions and MILLIONS of fans, but I am really meh either way. I just want Venus to win a premier tournament on red clay because surely she has been the best performer this clay court season

Nice quote by Rafa: http://tinyurl.com/2b42k5s

Speaking in Spanish, Nadal then laid out his philosophy of life. "Well, I'm almost 24," he said. "If I'm not motivated, it would not be very good for me. Not just in tennis but in life, you have to be excited about what you do at 24. I love playing tennis. I love competition and I love to be where I am. I want to be up there and move on. I don't mean to say that I am good, but I want to be better. I mean that I want to play at a great level and I want to improve. This gives you personal pride and satisfaction to see that you are able to supersede yourself."

"...this mama lion..."

Heh, just read your response on the other thread, thanks for being a good sport ;)

As for Aravane...oof, where do I start? She had some altercation some 3-4 years ago with Chaky on practice courts at RG that included her kicked Anna's rackets or bag or something like that after which her father was banned from entering the venue (if I remember correctly he threatened to join in).
She's in some sort of beef with French tennis federation, so she's not playing for their FC team.
She gave an interesting statement earlier this year saying she's not impressed with Serena after she lost to her choking away a lead, called out Bartoli and JJ on bad sportsmanship, Sharapova and De Brito on grunting (started screaming during points at last year's RG match against De Brito annoyed with her grunts)
Refused to shake Zahlavova Strycova's hand after losing to her and so on...Spunky girl, all in all ;)

GB Thanks for that I did read that sometime ago.Gosh Rafa will be 24 in about three weeks having followed him since the start he seems in a way much older.

lira Vega Mama Lion? hey lol!

Posted by lira vega 05/16/2010 at 09:28 AM

Oh, that's awful marg, glad you got yourself out of it. I hope it doesn't take Steps 3 years though, he's already 31. Sigh...:(

Master Ace:

(I'm a fish out of water when we're not talking Big Four tournament scheduling, especially for the three non-Aussie events....)

Is it just me, or did Madrid substantially alter the start times for Sunday's championship matches? I recall last year's Fed-Rafa final being played in the sunshine, and with today's 6:40 p.m. local time start, it will be an evening match at the Magic Box. I was expecting at 7:10 a.m. start time out here in Seattle.

BOOOOO!

(But thank you for the info! Still the One, as a certain 1970s song would say! :-)

Just quoting Annie, marg. I've mellowed some on Rafa, but let's not push it ;)

Posted by GB 05/16/2010 at 09:30 AM

AM: Although Rafa's got an old soul, he's so goofy that I can't imagine him as say 30. How weird it will be when he gets there.

Yeah, happy b'day to the Muzz, sorry it ended on a crappy note once again.

Neveah I laughed when you said you sat on your foot. So sorry about the way you hurt your ankle, I really do hope your ankle heals quickly and you get back in your 6 inch stilletos soon.

lira vega Well I am not to be lumped in to that group thanks very much

I can speak for myself

Good to see you are coming around lol!

And for the TWibe, I'll just get this on record:

Prediction: Nadal, 4 and 3.

Fed's tournament in Madrid is already a success. The winning juices are flowing again, and some capable competitors have been stopped in three-set fistfights.

I hereby pronounce Roger ready for Roland Garros.

Some people will kick my derriere for saying this, but if Rafa beats Roger today and then again on Sunday, June 6, you're not going to find me complaining... unless Fed gets screwed line a line call or some particularly cruel twist of fate unrelated to Rafa's excellence.

Matt Zemek,
You are not the only one on the start times. I thought the times were much earlier last year also. Roger and Rafael will be on 3D at movie theatres at Madrid, Barcelona, and (forgot other city) and will be competiting with football(believe Real Madrid vs Barcelona)

Neveah I dont know how you can walk in 6inch heels.Hope you ankle will be ok

Maybe there is a lesson in there for you regarding heel height? lol!

Posted by Bobby 05/16/2010 at 09:38 AM

Aussiemarg, definitely not bad for a golden oldie! Was just saying on Twitter earlier this week that Top 10 seems grayer than it has in a while. Love it.

Now wondering if I should really go to church. Really want see Venus doing well and for some reason I cannot check scores on Blackberry in church. Ugh - LOL I am without a doubt a bad person - LOL

Posted by Master Ace 05/16/2010 at 09:39 AM

Bobby,
Both matches should be good today. Will we have a 3rd unseeded winner in a Premier event(Justine at Stuttgart and Maria Jose at Rome)?

Bobby lol!

Karen- We need to talk;)Holla at me when you get back from church. Ive had 2 restraining orders against this nut and he's still stalking me. The police aren't protecting me at all,and i keep saying to them,What will it take? and i think its going to take me dead for them to realize. Its a sad situation, and ive been going through this for almost 2 years.
