Howdy. I'm a little late to the party today, but there's been a lot going on here at the mothership, including putting together some elements of our Tennis magazine Wimbledon preview issue. That's kept my busy most of the day, but I'm aware that I owe you a post on Ion Tiriac, and I want to write one celebrating Brad Parks' upcoming induction into the
International Tennis Hall of Fame. I'm going to be a chaperone on cowboy Luke's class trip tomorrow morning, so those red-meat posts will have to wait until next week.

You Federer fans will be pleased to hear that those who know tell me that on the Sunday morning of the doubles final in Rome, Roger practiced for three hours with Sam Querrey. Federer was reportedly on fire - conspicuously sharp, focused, and in-form.

Bob and Mike Bryan eventually won in Rome, snatching the title from Querrey and his partner for 2010, John Isner. Think I'll write my ESPN post tomorrow about those four American guys. Too bad there's only one doubles match in Davis Cup ties, because Isner and Querrey could develop into a truly dominant team.

I wish I had a little more time to jaw about the women's event in Rome. It's encouraging that the Williams sisters are both still in contention, but Venus will be playing Jelena Jankovic in the heat of the Italian night later on, and that's a tougher assignment than Serena had going up against Maria Kirilenko. Some of us, myself included, have tended to write off the sisters during the clay-court season, and a win by either of them would certainly make us re-think that position. It will be a good test for Venus tonight, feel free to discuss and call the match here. . .

-- Pete

This post could not have come at a worst time if you are a Venus fan. She is down a set and a break. We are all very depressed Venus fans right not (at least I am)

Posted by CL 05/06/2010 at 03:32 PM

Well, that is nice to hear for this Fed fan. Now if that "conspicuously sharp, focused and in-form' guy would only show up at an actual match, I would be even happier.

And Venus seems to be having more trouble with JJ's heat than the Rome heat - at least at the moment.

Posted by Alexis 05/06/2010 at 03:32 PM

Roger said he practiced hard in Rome but it's nice to know that he had a good one with Sam Querrey. Hopefully it will all pay off in Estoril this week. At this point, I just hope all the guys are playing well and feeling good in Madrid next week.

Posted by Master Ace 05/06/2010 at 03:38 PM

Jelena is a game away from facing Serena tomorrow.

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature) 05/06/2010 at 03:39 PM

hey Pete, I guess Vee's having some trouble with JJ in Rome right now. But our new American doubles team of Isner and Querry is exciting. I really hope they continue to play together. One of the commies in Rome was referring to them as the Twin Towers. I hope that name doesn't stick since it's got such a negative association for me anyway. Enjoy the class trip tomorrow. They are always a gas except I suggest you take a pass on any 8th grade trips to Washington, DC. That one almost killed me.

JCF is out of Madrid with injury. The injury count just keeps climbing. :(

Bad day at the office for Venus today, no doubt. But it happens.

Posted by Master Ace 05/06/2010 at 03:48 PM

The Madrid byes goes to Serena, Jelena, Ana and Maria Jose. Maria K, Venus, Nadia and Lucie first match will be on Sunday or Monday in Madrid(if any QF are playing on Saturday, I will contact Mr. X to get on the Evil Blue Lord)

Posted by avid sports fan aka "sigh-rena" 05/06/2010 at 03:51 PM

Besides JJ playing very well, I don't know but there are only so many bad days one can have in the office and lose that way. That is already twice this year 6-2, 6-0. Now 6-0, 6-1. Is the next one going to be 6-0, 6-0? Vee why why why? :(

Posted by CL 05/06/2010 at 03:54 PM

avid - be of good cheer...grass is right around the corner and then Venus will show the pretenders what's what.

Posted by sblily (Wheeeeeeeee!!!) 05/06/2010 at 03:56 PM

Back from my workout and from reading the comments, guess I should feel grateful for having missed the Vee/JJ match.

Happy for JJ, but bummed (to put it mildly) about Vee. :(

Posted by avid sports fan aka "sigh-rena" 05/06/2010 at 03:58 PM

CL - I have little good cheers left ;-) after the Canucks were manhandled by the Hawks yesterday and now Vee is womanhandled by JJ

Posted by CL 05/06/2010 at 04:00 PM

avid - **ouch****double ouch** sorry about that. Perhaps a glass of 'cheer'? :-)

Novak leads 6-4,5-4 with Fabio serving at Belgrade

Posted by avid sports fan aka "sigh-rena" 05/06/2010 at 04:02 PM

CL - I think I need a jug , I don't think a glass will do ;-)

Posted by Alexis 05/06/2010 at 04:03 PM

avid sports fan - how old is Venus? Is she 30 yet? I think she is. I would expect her to start having tougher matches but you are probably right that she shouldn't be losing this badly consistently.

I am thinking what type of alchol I can start drinking at 6.00am here?,ponders and looks at alchol cupboard.

"with Fabio serving at Belgrade"

MA - somehow that sentence has me envisioning a beefcake guy with long locks serving 'not butter' at a dinning room some where in Belgrade. ;-))

Novak wins 6-4,6-4

Posted by avid sports fan aka "sigh-rena" 05/06/2010 at 04:06 PM

Alexis - She will be 30 in June. That is exactly the problem, it is not that she is losing, it is the way she is losing. Other than the loss to Na Li at AO, her last two losses have been way to lopsided with similar W/UFE ratios. Miami was 10/30, here was 9/28 and many of the misses were not by a few cms. They were way wide or way long.

Posted by Samantha Elin, supporter of all things Scandinavian 05/06/2010 at 04:08 PM

I would disagree that JJ played well, she got the ball back and that all she had to do because Vee was MORE than will to provide an assist. 9 winners and l0 errors isn't my idea of playing well. I can't wait to see her try this on Serena.

Posted by CL 05/06/2010 at 04:09 PM

Aussiemarge - mimosa is the way to go. OJ/champagne.

Alexis-sssshhhhhh...a certain u-no who will be 30 in about a year and a couple of months. Don't give him any ideas. (Ooops...maybe he already has taken on a few (bad) ideas.)

Yes, I did AM and I watch V make ridiculous UEs. JJ did what she does best, get the ball back and wait for V to self destruct with 28 errors.

Posted by avid sports fan aka "sigh-rena" 05/06/2010 at 04:16 PM

Samantha - you must have your rose colored Vee glasses on ;-) It's all good. I hope you won't be licking your chops tomorrow if JJ lays another beatdown on Serena (Not that I want that to happen) Yes 9/10 may not be very good on paper but it was very good with the way the match went and considering how short the match was.

Posted by Mr.X (Live, from Minionland!) 05/06/2010 at 04:16 PM

Hi everyone.
Samantha, are you aware of the irony of your last comment?
Anyway, Serbia! Where have these 2 been? First, Ana actually wins matches, and now JJ puts a beatdown on Venus? Is it 2008 all over again? (I certainly hope so)
Also, i want to congratulate Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez for making the SFs at such a prestigious tournament. And she could even make the final, if Ana goes back to being the Ana of late. In case you were wondering, no, Maria Jose is not a minion. It only applies for guys.
Even though i wouldnt mind the Spanish woman winning, a final between the Serbs would be awesome. Even more so with JJ's mother recently trash-talking Ana.

A post on the Evil Blue Lord. Well, there's one i wont need to read:)

Oh, and news of the week. No, wait, of the month. It could even be news of the year, as far as i'm concerned:
http://www.tennis.com/articles/templates/news.aspx?articleid=5262&zoneid=4
Yes, please:) Now i only need this to actually be shown.

Avid, I don't need V rose colored glasses to know that a five time Wimbledon champion is a far better player than someone whose games doesn't permit them to win a slam.

Posted by avid sports fan aka "sigh-rena" 05/06/2010 at 04:20 PM

oh correction - "rose colored Vee glasses" should have been "rose colored anti-JJ glasses" ;-)

Posted by Mr.X (Live, from Minionland!) 05/06/2010 at 04:20 PM

Checking the Spanish media for tennis news, there's a video of Rafa already in the Magic Box, practicing with Pico, some words from Delpo saying that the recovery will be long, Verdasco saying that it would be great to make the Top 5 this year, and that he feels able to do it. Also saying that he still dreams of winning a Slam and being No.1 one day, and expressing that he has "good jealousy" towards Nadal (dont misinterpret it, it's a common expression in Spanish, and certainly positive).
There's also Shrieky, who will return to the tour in Madrid, saying that she has expectations of going back into the Top 10.

Posted by Arun 05/06/2010 at 04:21 PM

["rose colored Vee glasses" should have been "rose colored anti-JJ glasses"]

Mr. X - wow you are a font of information! And all of it interesting. Thanks. I wish the US press had even half such an interest in tennis.

"Alexis-sssshhhhhh...a certain u-no who will be 30 in about a year and a couple of months. Don't give him any ideas. (Ooops...maybe he already has taken on a few (bad) ideas.)"

Yeah... but at least his recent losses were two final set tiebreaks and a 5-7. As for Venus, it is worrisome to see her lose two matches with such lopsided scores.

Caro=JJ. Just without the mystery of the stolen massage caper.

Posted by Samantha Elin, supporter of all things Scandinavian 05/06/2010 at 04:28 PM

AM, just curious if you thought V played well today or did she check out of this match?

Posted by Master Ace 05/06/2010 at 04:29 PM

Alexis,
Venus winning only 4 games in her last 2 losses to Kim and Jelena is a cause to be concerned.

Mr. X,
Have you heard that this week is Serbian Revival week? Ana and Jelena in Rome and Novak hosting the Belgrade open and he won his first match in straights to keep Serbia partying into the late night.

Posted by Samantha Elin, supporter of all things Scandinavian 05/06/2010 at 04:30 PM

Wrong Sherlock. Caro reach her first GS final at the age of only 19 while it took JJ into her twenties. Also was JJ world's #2 at 19. I don't think so.

Posted by Arun 05/06/2010 at 04:31 PM

hello AM!
Yeah. I was a bit surprised (albeit pleasantly) that he pulled himself together for the W.
I think he has a good chance against Isner on clay, as long as he takes care of his own serve.

Mr.X - seconding CL's wow. Your posts are always great.

Posted by Ruth 05/06/2010 at 04:32 PM

Oh, yes, that was a beat down. But, if I didn't know any better, I'd think that people don't know that Venus's 2010 record is now 21 wins and 3 losses with 2 titles won in 5 tourneys entered. I've been following and rooting for this almost 30-year-old for almost 16 years, and I can handle a beatdown every now and then -- even if, on some occasions, she's the recipient of said beatdown. :)

Come on, Venus fans! You're better than this.

Posted by Samantha Elin, supporter of all things Scandinavian 05/06/2010 at 04:33 PM

Agree Patrick, there is room for concern, but people always count Vee out and then she comes roaring back.

Posted by Mr.X (Live, from Minionland!) 05/06/2010 at 04:34 PM

Well, Master Ace, the Nole part isnt all that surprising honestly. He's supposed to win the tournament. It's the Djokovic Open, after all:) But Ana and JJ? That's very surprising, and great, IMO.
CL,
I happen to be wearing my information hat, although got the fanboy hat on for the last part of my firat post:) By the way, the fanboy list is changing for Wimbledon, i can already tell that.
As for your comment on the US media, well, there's always some bits with information on tennis in the Spanish sports media, more so now that the Madrid tournament is just around the corner. However, it's not like it's the main issue, dont get me wrong. There's a lot more on CR9's monumental performance yesterday.
Greetings, AM. Minionland rules.

Samantha Elin She was totally outplayed and wasnt given a chance to get into the match. Her u/errors and her serve was handled today by JJ with ease.

Posted by avid sports fan aka "sigh-rena" 05/06/2010 at 04:35 PM

Ruthie - LOL! I don't have enough liver to stomach the beatdowns when they get too close to each other ;-) Once is a while like every six months yes. But no more frequent than that ;-) Now I need a jug of cheers to hold on for this week ;-)

Jj has been playing well on the clay, this tournament especially.

Quite frankly I was worried for Venus today

JJ has great anticipation on the clay it was like she knew where every ball was going like Rafa in soo many ways.

Posted by Samantha Elin, supporter of all things Scandinavian 05/06/2010 at 04:39 PM

Let's keep this in mind: Greats: Vee, Ree, Justine. Very Good: Sharapova, Kim. Good, JJ, Ana. Just the facts.

Posted by Mr.X (Live, from Minionland!) 05/06/2010 at 04:41 PM

Samantha,
Dont you see what just happened? You were criticising JJ very strongly for doing exactly the things Caro does (and i'm certainly not a Caro hater, but the 2 of them happen to have quite a similar style), and now you just changed the topic to an entirely different one, abotu Caros' great achievements at her young age. That wasnt the point in the first place. The point was that considering JJ and Caro play in quite a similar way, it sounds terribly wrong to praise one of them a lot and slam the other pretty hard. You dont like JJ. Fine. We all have players we dont like. But you've been calling her a pusher lately, just after complaining so hard when other called Caro the same thing. There's a Spanish saying, "dont do to others what you wouldnt like them do to you"

That image, the first one leslie posted to? Forget about seeing the ball better, forget about the crap about being modern. That's the real reason why the Evil Blue Lord wants to stuff blue clay down our throats. That sponsorship, and the color in the background.

Yeah...but at least her losses were in the later rounds of the tourneys and not to players 20 or more ranking places below her.

See how silly (euphemism) this can be?!?! Could we just stop it? (Sorry, Roger, sometimes I just can't help myself.)

Probably...if the goal is to make me throw up. AND to make Nadal lose. The curse of the color of doom still lives.

I'm glad that you liked her dress, Samantha.

But if the sponsor color is blue and the clay will be blue, the court in Madrid would be look like one of those swimming pools by the beach, wouldn't it? All that clay/sand would allow some players to forget the altitude. Clever man that Evil Blue Lord! I don't know why he gets so much criticism. Spare me with any answer to this comment, please.

Mr X Getting back to Miss Sanchez interesting match up with Miss Fist Pump Ana

Both have good f/hands and serves.Though I wonder how Ana will handle the left serve of Sanchez. She was too hesitant at times in her match against Lucie.Though her racqet head speed on those volleys brings a tear to my eyes. Its just a joy to watch.

AM,
I cant really comment on how they've been playing this week, since i havent watched, but it's very interesting about Ana suddenly coming out of her monumental slump to play decently. Maria Jose can be a tricky opponent, because she plays very differently from the standard WTA style, actually playing s&v quite often.
And i thought you had learned the lesson about PINK last year.

The Evil Blue One is still pushing for blue clay - here's the mid-April Madrid Masters promo thing involving Ana Ivanovic:

http://www.anaivanovic.com/diary/day-trip-madrid

Speaking of Ana, her fresh new coach (Heinz Gunthardt, who used to coach Steffi Graf) obviously managed to teach her one thing: use the f-ing spin and higher net clearance, do not dump 99% of your shots into the net! Seriously, girl can finally rally patiently for a while, instead of going for a winner on each and every damn shot. Hence the wins, finally. Her serve is back as a result of that, is my personal theory.

Posted by aussiemarg [Madame President in Comma Rehab for 2009] 05/06/2010 at 05:52 PM

zengii Well for starters we are both Woman

Posted by chicklet 05/06/2010 at 05:53 PM

6-0 6-1? Serbian revival indeed. My irrational dislike for JJ has faded, but a beatdown by Serena would still be delicious.

Posted by Jamaica Karen 05/06/2010 at 05:55 PM

Ruth, unlike you I am not in the mood to be gracious. I am a sore loser today. No way should Venus be losing a match 0 and 1. 0 and 1. The worst part about it is that she had so many chances to hold serve in the first set but kept making stupid errors. How the hell do you miss drive volleys. For goodness sakes the woman created them. I am absolutely frustrated. I knew the match was going to be tough and after the way I saw Jankovic play Wickmayer yesterday I was a bit nervous for Venus today, but 0 and 1. For goodness sakes ... as to Little Sis she better represent for Williams family pride tomorrow.

The worst part of this match was seeing how close to tears Venus was. I have been a fan of hers for as long as you have and this is the first time I can recall seeing her close to tears after a loss. This was also the first time I have ever seen her not smile as she shook an opponent's hand after a loss. Credit to Jankovic who never even bothered to smile at the net either because it would have been so insincere. This crap day just got crappier.

On another note, why does every post here have to involve discussions about Federer and Nadal, even when they are hardly mentioned in said post?

AM,
Yes, we are. I'm going to retire. Busy day tomorrow.

Still pushing for blue clay. Always pushing for blue clay. At some point, here at Minionland we're gonna have to do something to stop this messanger of evil.

I see, AM. I'm guessing she hit her head and that made her vulnerable to the tricks of the Evil Blue Lord. As madame president, you should do something to bring her back to sanity.

Karen,
Sorry about Venus. I know the feeling when you just dont feel like being a gracious loser and just want to vent. I think you did in quite the respectful way.

Leslie, 4:43,

Thanks for the Rafa photos.

The third photo may show him wearing his $500,000 watch. Hard to tell from the photo.

In a video of Rafa practicing in Madrid with Juan Monaco, a security guard appeared to be on the scene.

Wonder if, when Rafa wears that watch in public, he'll be accompanied by one or more armed security guards.

Mr. X,
That's my point. YOU and other 40 millions should do something to stop that man and his cohorts should be stopped asap.

I twisted my knee, but I'm feeling better now. Thank you.
See you on Monday. Really off.

Karen, I'm a sore loser too. I don't really like the players who beat my favorites. I was looking forward to a Serena, Venus semi so much. Just hope Serena can get revenge for V.

I've seen Rafa wear the $500K watch in other practice sessions....it is rumored he will be wearing it during matches at the FO, but I don't think he will.

Posted by Mr.X (Live, from Minionland!) 05/06/2010 at 06:29 PM

Is that watch Rafa's wearing really worth $500K? I guess i know nothing about watches, ir doesnt seem all that special.

zenggi,
I never said we didnt have something already planned. Remember, the plan to stop the Sod at Barcelona worked.

Ok, time for me to leave for tonight too. Interesting SFs tomorrow. I must admit i would enjoy seeing the Sebs in the final.
See you tomorrow, everyone.

Yes, that's the half-a-mil watch on Nadal. According to people who follow his every step (and the photos provided as evidence), he was wearing the thing both at Monte Carlo and at Rome, for all his practice sessions, press conferences and photo ops.

Here's a pic of him practicing in Rome (from the official site):

Apparently, he's getting accustomed for wearing it at the actual matches at RG.

zengii: you are going to Estoril? wonderful for you! enjoy and have safe travels.

Leslie: thanks for the rafa pics. the watch he's wearing looks like the one he usually has on, no? and is this half million dollar timepiece supposed to be encrusted with jewels and such or just space-age technology? The third pic, the "posed" one is verrry lovely. Might have to put that one on my fb page.

I am getting a kick out of reading the posts directed at Samantha because if past experience is any indication we will not be reading any sort of retraction.

If EBL ever seriously tries the blue clay idea, I think a riot would be in order.

Venus looked fine after the match too me. She puts things into perspective.

I don't think she goes back to the hotel room after a loss and crawls up in the fetal position and cries herself to sleep.

here is a pic of the Richard Mille watch - his name is on it too (it only weighs 20 grams)

tenniesq One thing about Miss Vee over the years. She always puts things into prospective win or lose. She is a great sports woman and is a credit to the game.

Mr X Yes good night and I hope you will give us a report tommorrow from Minionland

Hmmm The Blue Tin Box? enough said.

Wow. That IS the watch! It looks gorgeous in the promo pic (it appears to say NADAL on the watchface. on the crystal.) Somehow it looks ordinary on Rafa. Thanks for posting the info TeamNadal and leslie.

Filip Krajinovic (18), given a wild card to Serbia Open, won his first ever ATP match yesterday (vs. Evgeny Donskoy, RUS), and today his second (vs. Horacio Zeballos, ARG).

Too bad it's most probably the end of the exciting journey for Filip there, since he's to meet Novak Djokovc in the quarters tomorrow.

Check out young Filip in his Berdych attire:
