What a bizarre point, not sure why PMac is saying Tomas handled that well, he really just pushed the ball back.
Surprised Berdych didn't challenge the 1st serve out call.
Too tentative there on the inside in forehand, didn't hit it with enough pace, could see that one coming. COME ON BERDYCH!!! |

are we seeing a new shift in men's tennis with the top two players simply being overpowered on the court. is the future bigger, taller and stronger players like Soderling, Berdych and Del Potro? |

Posted by Matt Zemek |
06/30/2010 at 10:48 AM |
Well-deserved, richly-earned, and bravely fought, Tomas Berdych. A lifetime of tennis demons peel away from shoulders that no longer carry a huge burden. The 15-30 point in that last game was the stuff of a champion, as was the love-40 save at 2-3. Federer will rue his weak second-serve replies in key spots, but Berdych stood tough between the ears and persevered.
He's elated, and rightly so. Great moment.
Hugs to my fellow Fed fans. |

So, I guess this is what the inevitable decline is going to look like. The shots that Federer absolutely has to make he's not making with the same consistency. The serve is touch and go, etc. The brilliance is still there, as we saw in the AO, but it's not as reliable as it used to be.
I really wonder if there's some hunger missing now. This is different from desire. I have no doubt that Federer very very much WANTS to win his 7th Wimbledon. I also have no doubt that he's still training hard. But hunger is something different from desire. Hunger is part of what made him make the shots he absolutely had to a few years ago, even last year.
Is there a little subconscious voice saying "You don't REALLY have to make this forehand. You've achieved more than you ever dreamed of and everyone will still love you if you don't make this forehand."
Who knows, but I think this could definitely be a factor and one that is really beyond his control to some degree. Maybe a bad year (though Federer has said in the past than any year you win a slam is a good year) will bring some of that hunger back. Maybe it will push it further away.
In any case, Mr. Federer has certainly given this fan more than he ever hoped for again and again. I'm sad he lost this match, but I'm neither devastated nor angry.
Thank g-d the grass court season is over! |
