Seasons Greetings 12/23/2010 - 6:59 PM

Tree

This will be as heartfelt as it is brief, because the Christmas rush is on! I wish you all a merry Christmas and joy-filled holiday season. If  you're traveling terrrestrially, go safely. If you're flying, go safely - and patiently. If you're staying home, enjoy the comforts of the hearth and try to keep those two bullheaded family members from locking horns. Look for an announcement about a virtual holiday party (I think it will be on Dec. 30th) starting early enough so that many of our readers in England, Europe and other points abroad can join us, at least for a little while. And if you want to talk tennis before then, use this post for your Comments.

Of course, it doesn't always have to be about Roger and Rafa, Serena or Caro. Extend your holiday greetings to each other, make peace across the great Fedal Divide, even if it's only until the starter's gun sounds at the Aussie Open. Say something kind to someone you, just for the holiday hail of it.

I will jump back into the fray early next week. We have a wonderful community here, and that makes me proud and happy. Thank you all for reading, and adding your insights on the topics of the day. God bless you all.

-- Pete

Season's greetings to all twibers!

I've been laying low during this exho time, but for those interested an rf.com poster did a great translation of Fed's interview w/ SI where he talks in a little more depth than usual about Africa and his foundation, also a little family stuff.

Not everyone can access rf.com so I'm posting the tenniswarehouse link:

I hope when I return in the Spring its better.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 12/24/2010 at 02:21 AM

zenggi! *hugs you and AM* Nice to have a "No Taste Club" moment just before Christmas!

Thanks for your message yesterday and of course the same to you and yours. Sorry about the horrid weather but it least it will be a bit warmer than it is further north.

Gee I wasnt going to post anymore till I got home though...............

I blame the cold and rain Blah

Posted by zenggi (from Madrid) 12/24/2010 at 02:23 AM

AM,
I answered last night. Also to jewell. Is Briony with you already?

I am also very dissapointed with the weather in Madrid. Three days of rain and cold. Today we´ll see some sun but there will be strong winds and snow in in the air. Not normal even for the winter here.

Let me think about a dress for the TW-party.

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. 12/24/2010 at 02:24 AM

I expect it is the wrong kind of snow on the cabling that's interfering with mails... *rolls eyes*

Posted by zenggi (from Madrid) 12/24/2010 at 02:25 AM

*Hugs jewell back* Are you wearing that same dress (the merit card one) also next Monday?. It is Monday, right?

Posted by Aussiemarg, 12/24/2010 at 02:27 AM

zengii Thanks I sent you another.Briony is here.

I will be wearing a Summer number dress for sure

Havent been back since 2005 and forgot how cold it can be even though I brought warm winter clothes.

Posted by Corrie 12/24/2010 at 02:28 AM

Merry Christmas and happy hols to everyone.

AM, merry Christmas to you, I finally got your email and sent one back. And thanks so much for all your support in the last few difficult months.
Weather in Melbourne is finally not quite as wet and cold as before, but not very good forecast for Boxing Day Test, which everyone is waiting on with great interest.

Posted by zenggi (from Madrid) 12/24/2010 at 02:28 AM

I heard a few songs from that album by Susan Boyle. She has gone a transfornmation from village-mouse to city-swan. Wonderful to see. And she has a voice...

I am totally condused as usual with the times and dates

I have enough trouble when I am in Sydney lol!

Also just some tennis news from email to me from Tennis Australia

Regarding Tomic and his practising in Brisbane before the w/card play offs and then citing illness and his withdrawl Tennis Australia arent impressed and he will have to play qualifers or else do well in other tournaments prior to AO.There are 2 w/cards left now.Peter and Jelena have been given the 2 for their good play in the play offs as Jewell posted the other day.Thats the impression I got from their recent news to me.We shall see though. They change their minds like the wind sometime.

Posted by Aussiemarg, 12/24/2010 at 02:42 AM

zengii Are you drunk? I think you posted the wrong thing LOL!

Posted by zenggi (from Madrid) 12/24/2010 at 02:44 AM

Some examples of this year spring collection.

One of the most magical passages in all of music:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GS_gumNLHhM

I know I say this every yr, but it bears repeating: The Nutcracker is a damn fantastic piece of music. Don't let yourself get jaded by its yearly bastardization, there's a reason why it's a perennial holiday favorite.

This particular dance is vintage Tchaikovsky. It opens with, again, some of the most magical, atmospheric musical tableaux led by the shimmery strings. The wordless children's chorus soon joins in and, in typical Tchaikovsky fashion, the flourishes become louder and more frenetic (Tchaikovsky wouldn't be Tchaikovsky without a little bit of bombast.) From that point on it's a veritable riot of colors and instruments.

This really should be part of the standard Nutcracker suite. It deserves to be better known for its 1st two minutes of tone-painting alone.

Merry Christmas and Happy Happy New Year's to all.

Posted by Ruth 12/24/2010 at 01:12 PM

May I be lazy one more time in 2010 and do a "piggyback" and echo Andrew's wonderful comment @12:41 am? Thanks to all of you who have made TennisWorld a perfect place to meet and chat over the years. I wish you all and your families "comfort and joy" during this special season and all the best in 2011. (And, speaking of missing old TW friends, I really wish sanja and Sam would just magically reappear to visit us for Christmas.)

Just because I moved here, Atlanta is scheduled to have its first white Christmas in over 100 years! Needless to say, my young niece and nephew here are thrilled at the prospect (I am not); and those of my friends in Philadelphia who took my departure from that city as a personal affront to them :) are calling to tease me about my "avoiding the cold and snow of the North."

But nothing shall prevent me from enjoying this my first Christmas in the South, and especially being with my grandson Soli whom I consider a TW kid -- along with Cowboy Luke and Andrew's Cathleen and Jenn's sons and Diane's Olivia and many others. I hope that Santa will be very kind to all the TW kids since I know that they've all been very, very good! ;-)

Posted by Holds2Love 12/24/2010 at 01:19 PM

Joe Samuel Starnes, that is one adorable photo. any relation? ;-)

there is a lull in the Christmas Eve action here due to naps, and I am surprised to find the FO final, Stosur/S. Williams on my telly. fun. hope Serena is back in action soon. Really can't wait to see what 2011 has in store for both tours. Not like I'm missing tennis or anything...

Pete, sorry about your son's MTO, hope he's better soon. Thanks for this place to congregate! Happy Christmas to you and yours.

Posted by Holds2Love 12/24/2010 at 01:29 PM

ahem. it was described in the listing as the FO Final, but obviously it's the QF. I'll take my face out of the wassail bowl now. :)

Posted by RubyP - Miami Nice 12/24/2010 at 01:36 PM

Indeed! We are having wonderful, cool, cloudless, unusual days, and very grateful. Just a drive by on a busy day getting ready for family coming in. Will be thinking of you all at midnight mass, while singing in the quad-lingual - English, Spanish, Creole/French and Latin of course, choir. Typical Miami gathering, but I love it. Reminds me of the international TW, of which I am happy to share with my infrequent, lightening posts - but I must have my daily fix. NP, I am in a hurry, but had to stop by for the Nutcracker - how many costumes I have made for my daughter!

Happy Holidays to Pete (giving Luke an arm brace from Santa)and the whole wonderful gang with whom I can be unabashadley tennis crazy.

Andrew,

Thank you, and wish you and your's the best. May I also add Crazyone, a fellow Roger-ian, to your list. Haven't seen here much lately, however.

This is a re-post from the previous thread -

"Completely OT - I am planning to fly into Paris over the weekend, and wondering if any TW folks can give a realistic idea of what the weather is like? The web reports seem quite conflicting in terms of how severe it is, and how functional CDG is."

Posted by Holds2Love 12/24/2010 at 02:22 PM

hey Amit, I'm in London, so have no first-hand knowledge of what's happening in Paris, and I assume you can google as well as I can, but there's this...

good luck to you!

Merry Southern Christmas Ruth, I blame you for bringing this cold northern weather South with you! Enjoy Soli.....kids make the day so special.
Olivia has arrived here with a cold and a fever and we also have Mister Kitty.....my daughter had to have her other cat put down last week and she is sad so Mister will share the holiday with us also. Glenn is alergic so he is now taking Benadryl!
My son arrived from California last night and is out shopping, just like a man to leave it all to the last minute.
I wish everyone here a wonderful holiday season and thanks to all of you for sharing your love of the game!

zenggi, feliz navidad. you still seem to be enjoying the fedal bromance in your avatar. you prolly speak spanish too, eh? you euros, ha!

np, the kobies better not be overly generous tomorrow against the heat. i wonder if d.wade will play - i hope he does - should be a good opportunity to feel each other out.

Posted by Amit 12/24/2010 at 03:19 PM

Holds2Love,

Thanks. Will see what happens - seems utterly chaotic there, with part of the airport roof about to cave in. When I call the airline's customer service to check if the flights are being delyaed, they seem so shockingly oblivious about this. Who are these people manning the phones?

Posted by Holds2Love 12/24/2010 at 03:33 PM

Amit, so sorry for your frustration. May I ask where you are traveling from? London airports are (finally) open for business. Could you possibly re-route to London and take the Chunnel? Not sure if that's realistic at this late stage, but I sympathize -- seems like you ought to be able to get some basic information at this point.

Posted by Amit 12/24/2010 at 03:57 PM

Holds2Love,

Am flying from San Francisco. Thanks for your suggestion, although I doubt that re-routing is possible at this stage. I am not frustrated about the weather per se; cannot do much there. The quality of customer service staff I dealt with is frustrating, however.
