When a 21-year-old young gun reaches the fourth round of a Grand Slam, he'd usually expect his press conference to be mostly about him. Not so for Tomas Berdych, who arrived in the wake of girlfriend Lucie Safarova's stunning upset of Amelie Mauresmo. After a few questions about Berdych's own win over Dmitry Tursunov – the fourth straight Slam where he's reached the fourth round – he was asked only about Safarova.
"Yeah, of course, it's fantastic result for her. She's in the quarterfinal. That's fantastic in a Grand Slam," said Berdych (quite effusive from the phlegmatic Czech).
The relationship has been relatively low-profile until their twin wins on Sunday in Melbourne, with Berdych usually reluctant to provide too many details. "Four years," he answered when asked how long they had been together. "We are both from the same city," he said when prodded about where they met.
Safarova was a little more forthcoming. "We grow up together in the same club in Prostejov. We practicing still there. So since small kids we know each other," she said, smiling at the mention of his name.
The two walked off the court at almost the same time. "That's amazing we finish in the same time," she said. "I saw him. We are both really happy. Before the Open, we was like, yeah, speak together. We was like, 'Okay, now together we can do it.'"
Berdych did offer that the two would be pulling out of their mixed doubles match later on Sunday. The backlog caused by the weekend's rain had left him having to play singles two days in a row, and Safarova is carrying a slight leg injury. She picked it up in the Hopman Cup mixed team competition, where the two represented the Czech Republic and – incidentally – didn't win any of their mixed doubles matches. So the withdrawal may be as well, because losing in mixed doubles is frequently hazardous to a couple's relationship.
