Long Time, No See
Posted 03/30/2007 @ 4 :12 AM

2007_03_29_serenahenin_blog So we’re down to the closing stages of the tournament and everything is starting to slot into place. There were some twists and turns on the women’s side, but the final is pretty much what you would have expected when the draw came out – Justine Henin vs. the winner of the fourth-round match between Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova... in this case, Serena Williams

Believe it or not, Williams and Henin haven’t played since 2003. They met three times that year - Henin won their two meetings on clay, one at Charleston and the other a controversial encounter at Roland Garros. Williams then got her revenge at Wimbledon a month later, winning in straight sets.

They’ve been through a lot physically and personally since then – Henin with a long-running virus that struck in 2004 and made her decide to limit her schedule ever since, and the breakup of her marriage late last year. Serena has had left knee troubles that have required two surgeries, and in September 2003, her half-sister Yetunde was shot and killed when visiting Compton.

When they have played for uninterrupted stretches, the two have been the most dominant players of the decade so far. For the most part, their periods at the top haven’t coincided – the exception being that brief period in the summer of 2003. This year could change that: rivals like Maria Sharapova, Amelie Mauresmo and Kim Clijsters are struggling mentally or physically – or nuptially – and the crop of –ovas and –vics behind them have continually missed chances to break through on big occasions.

But for that to happen, they too will have to stay healthy, which is a tenuous proposition even for Saturday. Serena, who has played four days in a row, said her knee was inflamed during and giving her “a lot of pain throughout” her semifinal match against Shahar Peer. Henin has been having some breathing problems for which she’s taking medication.

Henin had an easier time in her semifinal than Williams, winning 6-2, 6-3 over Anna Chakvetadze, who kicked herself for her odd strategy: “She likes when someone hit flat against her. Well, all girls mostly playing like that – that's how I played today as well, I don't know why. It's not my style of the game.”

Williams had fierce resistance in the first set from Shahar Peer but not much thereafter in her 7-6(4) 6-1 win. She demolished Sharapova for the second time in a row two rounds earlier, and got Nicole Vaidisova after that. It must have all looked oddly familiar to Williams, who played the same opponents in reverse order in the last three rounds of her Australian Open win.

But now she faces a player who wasn’t at the Australian Open, Henin. The match-up is always a absorbing one. Between the lines, there’s an interesting premise: Williams’ big hitting against Henin’s versatile and deceptively powerful game.

If Williams is on and making her shots, she can hit through Henin like she can anyone else. But if Henin can get some rallies going and disrupt Williams’ rhythm, she could frustrate her and draw a large number of errors.

Their past matches have tended to break down by surface – Henin generally winning on clay and Williams on faster surfaces.

There’s also a bit of an edge to their meetings because of that Roland Garros incident. Down 4-2 in the third set, Henin motioned for Williams to wait as Williams served at 30-0. After serving a fault, Williams rhetorically asked the umpire if she would receive a first serve again. She did not because the umpire had not seen Henin raise her hand.

Henin made no move to tell the umpire that she had motioned Williams to stop, with her coach Carlos Rodriguez later saying something to the effect of, ‘If Serena saw the raised hand, why did she serve?’ After the match, Williams accused Henin of “lying and fabricating.”

The incident was heightened by the crowd, which booed and whistled Williams repeatedly. The round before, Williams had beaten the French fans’ beloved Mauresmo in no uncertain fashion. Henin came from a break down to win that match and eventually her first Grand Slam title.

Is it all water under the bridge? Maybe, maybe not. Said Williams on Thursday night, “Hopefully we'll have a good, honest match.”

Undoubtedly

It is just brilliant to see Serena back to her best. Undoubtedly Serena is the best women’s tennis player of all time; let’s hope she can build up enough slams to prove her dominance.

If Serena can move well (which she has being so well in the Aussie open and Miami), I think Henin will have problems. Henin is returning to 100% again so this should be a great battle.

Hopefully Serena can approach the match like she did against Maria, cool, collected and had the perfect balance of power and good solid percentage play!!

C'mon Serena!!

im back! gosh, been gone for such a long time

anyway i really hope serena wins this one... so she can prove to all the serena-haters out there that the Aussie Open win wasnt a fluke at all. If she can get that serve going, Henin will no doubt be overwhelmed.

not to take anything from henin. she's been solid so far this year, and she will be a tough opponent. but if serena can manage to keep her unforced errors to a minimum, i cant see why she wont win this one.

mabuhay serena!

When Serena is healthy and focused, she simply runs over her opponent, and I think that what will exactly happen in the final. As crafty as Henin is, when Serena is on, no player on the tour can withstand her big guns. Go Serena ! And if she wins the French Open which I think she will, she will have a true grand slam in 2007. And as competitive as tennis is today, that would make her the best of all time.

Serena is back! Go on girl!

The Serena-Justine final will be an exciting conclusion to the hardcourt season (until this summer, of course). It will also serve as a prelude to possible clay season matchups...much like the Federer-Nadal clay finals of '06 perhaps?

The best has returned to form that is Serena, of course I just wish Venus her big sis now get her fight back I still think that Venus has the most guts on the women's side of the game, and that 2005Wimbledon final betwwen her and Lindsay is still to me the best women's match I ever seen.Maybe no certainly one of the best matches of all times men or women.

A person on crutches could beat the choking bunch that play women's tennis. Equal prize money is a travesty! If anyone doubted that women's tennis is not at the same place as men's tennis, they only had to see a very 'out of shape' Serena beat the so called top women in tennis and win a slam, no less. And she gets what Federer gets for her victory!

Anyway, Justine can fight, so at least we will see a match.

Serena...best of all time? Look, I really like her, too, but that is just ridiculous. Graf, Navratilova, and Evert are all far ahead of her in Open-era greatness and consistency. Seles, whose career was traumatized by a tennis-related murder attempt, owns one more Slam title than Serena and was an even fiercer competitor.

If Serena wins her ninth Slam title (to tie Seles) I could say she is greater than Seles because Seles did not win Wimbledon, but that still leaves her far behind Navratilova, Graf & Evert.

Even though she may not have the same number of slams as them, it really means something that she had ALL 4 at the same time...that, imo, moves her ahead of Seles easily.

Serena is the best of all time....Go Serena Go!!! Bring your A game....OLD GLORY ALL THE WAY!!!!!

See you there!!!!

C'mon Serena!!!!

USA USA USA

I simply don't get it. I am always for Serena getting back to her best. I'll always be her fan.
But when I was watching the match yesterday, I was surprised and amazed at the animosity the crowd was showing towards her. Was she playing in France or the US. She is American for heavens' sake and has won a gold medal for you guys in the Olympics. Show half the respect that you guys show for the so-called heroic Roddick. I was disgusted. Had she been my country woman, I would have totally gone to all her matches and shown her the support that she needs in her fledgling comeback.
Another thing, read the article about the alienation that the Williams sisters feel in their own country in the New York times.
Another thing, learn to live with the fact that she will be and she is the topmost born and bred American woman tennis player of all time.

Sowmya

Asterix, during which round at the Australian open was Serena out of shape? During what round was she heaving for air? I think you are one of those silly(borderline stupid)people that believes that a person(a woman)is in shape if she's a size negative two.

Serena wins a slam and it's because her competion chokes? I don't know if you watched the Australian open final, but Maria "the fighter" didn't have enough time to choke. Same thing in Miami. And if choking is a problem on the women's tour, then what does that say about Justine's success or her potential to put up a "fight" on Saturday?

Although I am a fan of JH's style of play, I can't see her being able to win over Serena. JH seems to have a choke here and there(U.S. Open last year) and this breathing problem sounds like stress. Serena is too powerful and accurate, she's not just the basher that Sharapova is, she is overwhelming when confident. JH will have to be a serious escape artist to come away with this one.

I hope henin can win tomorrow but i am worried,Serena with those huge arms and shoulders and rugby playing thighs, she is basically a man playing on the womans tour.
Despite Henin's superior talent and skill I dont think it will be enough against such a massive size difference.
But lets hope for the credibility of womens tennis that brains and finesse can overcome brawn and muscle bashing.

Are fedluver and underspin really seeing wrestling matches happening ? Henin, if she is a competent player can handle serena's strokes. Muscle and brawn or whatever you want to call it do not matter. Skill and timing does and Serena has plenty of it.
And c'mmon you have got to be joking...or you are in the 18th century to be thinking that tennis should be played in flouncy skirts and kitten shoes and women to be pictures of swoony loveliness(like a lighter Maria Sharapova).
This is the age when tennis is as much of an endurance game. You have to put as much time in working out as much in honing your skills.
So women have the muscle-def. You can't handle that, then you are a wimp and have no idea how to get you strength on.

All of this said,I have this feeling about you Serena-haters. You are just racist pigs waiting for some stupid spineless excuses to pounce on her.

fedluver, you're not a luver (sp), you're just a hater. 'she is basically a man playing on the womans tour.' Puhlease, hater. I know plenty of African Godesses with similar proportions to Serena. Serena's game is solid, she hits hard, with depth and placement - eat it.

As for Henin, she can be physically tough as well. Who 's stopping her? It would be a really humdrum excuse to make if you guys were to pull the weak and small framed player card if she were to lose. As I said, any tennis player who really plays the game in all honesty would say and vouch for the fact that the muscles help you on the stamina and strength front but not on the winning front.
Many small framed players have the strength. Many bigger players on the tour have acknowledged that Henin packs some serious strength. So it is an even-stevens match this Saturday.
Common,Serena Williams is the only American flagbearer left. I want her to win. GOOOOOOOOO Serena!!!
So Serena-haters must either be racists or misogynistic sexists with a certain female body type(pansy and size 0) already on their minds. Either way, they must be biased about one thing or the other.

Justine Henin has brains? If that's true what happened last year during Australian Open final? Finesse? Oh please, she's a classless fraud. If Serena wins tomorrow, the win will do nothing to ruin the credibility of women's tennis. Just like men's tennis isn't cheapened when Nadal uses "brawn and Muscle bashing" to slap around federer.

sn2 - "So Serena-haters must either be racists or misogynistic sexists"

Are you completly insane, thats an over simplification of an issue if i have ever heard one.First of all i am a woman and a feminist and i had hoped tennis fans had moved beyond the idea,

'You are not a williams fan oh! you must be racist no other explanation for it'.
I simply dont like their games i like graceful skilled all round players like Federer and Henin, hence my name.

And lastly size matters alot in tennis why else are men so much better than women and why is a 22 year old is so much better than a 12 year old and it the reason Serena has been so successful

May the best woman win! I hope this will be a true test of the best women in tennis then little arguments like these won't matter because the proof will be in the pudding.

Oh and I think people who have to pick on Serena for the way she is built are really *reaching* for reasons why she may win. Just let the tennis speak for itself, and if she does win then give credit where credit is due.

As for the Serena hater commenting on her body structure. That young lady is strong and toned, but so what. She's also quick and sets her shots up by using her brain. She's the complete package. And when you decide to try to make her body structure something negative, just look at some of the other players..c'mon. Henin has the build of a little smaller-framed muscular boy and Mauresmo has the build of a severely-defined man. Most of those players are not exactly soft and feminine and most of them have a chest like a man or a little girl who still wears undershirts (everyone knows just what I mean). At least Serena still has plenty of feminine assets. Stop with the jealousy!

I really love serina, All you, silly idiots who think Serina is fat and unfit! well think again.
OK she is "fat" But very healthy and strong. and all the others you think is better than her can't beat her.
Any way good luck to serina tomorrow and hope you give all the Serina haters a bashing
love you Serina and big sis Venus

fedluver, if you would classify women based on body type which you so subtly put as grace, what else would you call yourself but a sexist trying to promote the very image of a woman that feminists of yore tried to defy.
You are implying that if you are built like an amazon, you are not a woman and can't play women's tennis though you have a truckload of talent and depth. C'mmon fedluver, you are being ridiculous.
I'm not oversimplifying things.I'm telling things that you are seeing just the way you see them.
Simple, isn't it?!!

My use of the word grace had nothing to do with bodyshape simply as a reflection to how one might play the game.

My point was simply that it would be better for tennis if the more skilled player won rather than the bigger.

I do not classify women on bodytype my point was a purely tennis one not a political or social one and in my opinion which is all i can offer here womens tennis would be better if talent was more relavant than size and strenght which in 2006 it does'nt seem to be.The equipment they use today favours strenght over skill.

So fedluver, you are saying or implying that serena has neither talent nor depth and only brute strength the way you put it??

I think if you answer this one, you'll get a tirade of angry replies.

Personally, I think you have gone 'talent-blind', if there ever was a word like that.
