Your Call, Aug. 20 08/20/2008 - 10:52 AM

Smallyourcall_5 Mornin', everyone. I'm going out to the US Open qualies today, to pick up my credentials and poke around a little. Not much more to add for now, except to say that I'll be posting later in the day, and expect to bump into some of you out at the BJKNTC this afternoon. Tomorrow, we have the US Open official draw ceremony, and then Friday I'll be back out at Flushing Meadow. Enjoy today's tennis action and comment on it here. Also, keep your eyes open for Thursday's Deuce Club posts, where I'm going to ask those of you who will be attending the US Open, and may want to hook up with fellow TWibe membere, to make yourselves know.

I second Chiconinja's nomination of Sampras's QF against Corretja. And of course there's also Pete's last USO final against Andre.

Long live Pistol Pete!

I love this pic. They all look ridiculous in it

In the early days when there was hope...

I have a little news flash for the tennis community.

Barring injury or other catastrophe, Nadal is going to win the U.S. Open.

It's not about surfaces any more. Every player who faces Nadal recently knows they don't have the key to beat him. Sometimes there is a period of back-and-forth in the match, then Nadal asserts himself and pulls away.

He plays a high-percentage game that no one right now has the answer to. I mean, in the Olympics, did anyone doubt he was going to win? It was actually funny, it was such a foregone conclusion that there was very little drama for the final.

Of course the other players will figure out Nadal eventually, but right now they haven't. No one can outlast him, no one can rally with him and no one has figured out an attack that will break down his game. It's not even about mental toughness or competitiveness at this point, which he happens to have also, he just has the game that the others can't match up against.

And I am not even really a Nadal fan.

pierre thank you for that, you have made my day!

yes, fedex can win the us open; but joker more likely to do so;

nadal is too tired ;

plus this is a hard court ;

but fedex will probably never be no 1 again ;

Ruth I am befuddled now as to whether you are being ironic about my sarcasm or if you thought that.. i was serious.. or if you thought i was making fun of the people who always say that Fed won his titles in a "weak" era or .... or oh i give up.
serious is the scariest of those ideas

Posted by Tennis Fan 08/20/2008 at 08:21 PM

NP – Obviously you are a conservative Republican from some mid-American state.

Yes the US is good, but not perfect, and only if you have good people in the three Branches.

I don’t think I would want you in the Executive, Legislative or Judicial Branch with statements like this:
“As for the 5-set requirements for women, there actually is a reason why that's a bad idea: Women aren't as physically gifted as men. But I won't complain if you can convince the majority of female players to go at it for five sets on hot, humid days when the Slam events generally take place. If not then you should be able to convince me and others that women will be able to handle it just as well as men, and that making the women more prone to injury is necessary for our enjoyment.”
Don’t women run the same distance in a marathon as man? If women play against men, then that is when you make exceptions for physical differences but not when women play against women. If women can be with child in the third trimester through hot and humid months (we did not always have air conditioning) and be in labor for hours and hours even in summer months, then yes they can play 5-set matches at slams from the quarters on. Sharapova came out recently about the ‘injury’ problem and that it is not a great as some want you to believe as this is how they get out of tournaments that they don’t want to play in. Take Venus for example: Do you really think that she won Wimbeldon, got injured shortly thereafter and could not play any tournaments in the summer and then surprise got better just about the time for the Olympics and the US Open? I don’t think so. Even they players are saying that the new system will take this hypocrisy away. Not that their aren’t legitimate injuries. Women just have get in good condition.
Actually, I think by not playing three sets actually hurts conditioning as women can get away easier without being in shape.
But surely you do recognize that tennis is a more "individual"
Did I not say this. As far as multiple levels it just adds to the bueracary not help it. Us the Federal State system sometimes can be good, sometimes not so good. There is no perfect system. But even the players are calling for consolidation.
As far as players doing what they want that is fine to a point. If Serena and Venus could get away with it they would only play GS. At least in Venus’s case she only plays the bear minimum.
Leave people alone, and they actually do more for the market and society than they would under a centralized system.
Obliviously, you were not around in the days of the oil barrens or had to work in deplorable conditions in mines and factories. Yes, Lassie Fair is good to a point but it also can be a meat grinder. There has to be some limits on everything. Players with power like Venus and Serena in your system could do what they want however; the no names would be taken advantage of and abused. This is how unions got started as the individual found out that they only way to make it better for one was for all to join together. Yes, there have been abuses in the Union system when they gain power. Yes balance is good. You can set up a governing body that takes this need for balance into consideration.
Besides the players are not required to join the Union and be governed by the system. They can be free lance amateurs and do what they want. Guess who is an amateur and can do what she wants? Na Li of China! However, they don’t get the benefits of the system either.
Anyway, I did not mean to get in a heavy political decision. However, there does seem to be a need for streamlining and more cooperation between the men and women’s tours.
Power corrupts! Absolute power corrupts absolutely!

Posted by NP 08/20/2008 at 08:22 PM

Chiconinja, I'm a huge Pete fan, but even I can't say that 1990 final qualifies as a classic. It was just a well-played match by Pete in his first successful, almost flawless Slam tourney, though seeing Andre's punk-rock outfits again doesn't sound like a bad idea....

Posted by Rachael 08/20/2008 at 08:22 PM

Nancy - one of my favourite tennis photos

Nalby's arms look amazing in it, too

Posted by ron 08/20/2008 at 08:26 PM

Nadal is too tired to wint the USO? Huh? You must not have seen him scampering around in Beijing right up until the last point, and even then looking like he could go another five sets.

And Federer's put on weight? I know they say the camera adds ten pounds but what t.v. have you seen him on? If anything Rog looks like he's lost a little weight.

I like your analysis.

Posted by naughty T, Lisboa Portugal 08/20/2008 at 08:26 PM

hey Moderators can we start a new thread where tennisfan and NP can try and out longwind each other? ;-)) I could be called "15 paragraphs of fame"

LOL on that wonder he is injured

Tim ($6.56 at Starbies today)

fedex can win the us open but joker more likely;

nadal yet unsuitable for a grans slam hard court;

murray not ready yet;

yes, fedex has put on weight ; sluggish;

too many exos, no coach, no scenerio analysi , ..

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/20/2008 at 08:31 PM

rosangel, i have finished watching the final again in total of the wimbledon final borg v mcenroe, i have to say,in comparison to this years final at wimbledon i am torn? as a lover of borg,who isn't the final set,was vintage borg!,in the final set of this years final,which i have watched 5 times,rafa really applied the pressure to roger,on his service game,i have to say,it is even,i can't say in all honesty,which is better,the tie breaker to mcenroe was gripping to say the least,i have to say,they both had their climax's etc,the rain also gave the drama to this years final,i love them both for different reasons.

Posted by naughty T, Lisboa Portugal 08/20/2008 at 08:32 PM

or even compete... sorry i was giggling too much
Mods please edit me. i am far too over the top bitchy on that one.

Posted by Chiconinja 08/20/2008 at 08:32 PM

avid sports fan,

Nalby hasn't been the same since all those men were on top of him.

They've cost him at least a couple of slams hehe.

Posted by Nancy 08/20/2008 at 08:33 PM

Rachael - I don't think you were around when i posted this one, it's one of my favorite pics. He is totally nuts..i like that

Posted by naughty T, Lisboa Portugal 08/20/2008 at 08:34 PM

Rachael and Nancy, no wonder Nalby doesn't win anymore if that is what happens to him when he does. He is obviously scared for life.

Posted by Tennis Fan 08/20/2008 at 08:34 PM

Correction Amatuer is Shaui Peng not Na Li or Li Na whichever way it goes.

Hi,Nancy and Rachael
glad to see you too back
Vamos Hott Sauce - in New Haven
naughty t - you are cracking me up

did I hear the call for a new bartender for the bar, Nancy
I see Sam found you a lovely new barmaid -
I really have no suggestions
cute, in an endearing goofy way as he may be - and covered with gold - I am not sure that Phelps is the man for the job - He may be too busy to come pour for us -but , he is worth considering
not exactly classically handsome , but hey - he's gonna be rich
and he is sure not a headcase

Posted by Chiconinja 08/20/2008 at 08:36 PM

I guess I forgot the pics must be "classic". It's just that seeing them so young seems memorable to me now.

And the's all about the outfits hehe.

Pete looks like a 13 year old by the way in the '90 US Open pictures. Really skinny, his body looks kinda weird.

hey beth, soon I'll be banished back to an internet-less land so make the most of me. hope you're good.

no ways is Phelps getting near the HC bar. guy is a total butterface.

Posted by tennisesq. 08/20/2008 at 08:40 PM

avid sports fan,
Just to elaborate on greenhopper's explanation: Olga Govortsova aka Ms. Scary Shoulders is the girl Serena played in the first round of the Olympics. I remarked to greenhopper that her shoulders scared me because they were so bony and skeletal, like Kiera Knightly's shoulders in "Atonement." Them shoulder blades were sharp. That's when greenhopper came up with Ms. Scary Shoulders. lol.

Posted by aussiemarg(lowner of legs unwrapped) 08/20/2008 at 08:41 PM

beth, hi, according to reports from a celibrity agent,phelps is set to make billions?

Posted by beth 08/20/2008 at 08:42 PM

Rachael - it was merely a suggestion
I agree the face is not the best looking one out there ( and you thought I might not know what a butterface was ? - Ha! - I am onto that one )
He looks better when he lets his hair grow out

still , there is something kind of cute in a goofy way

now , we need to fix that mama's boy thing going on
I am all for a young man respecting and loving his mom
but , this seems a little too close
If I were a young woman interested in this guy , I might be worried about mama , there

British cyclist Jamie Staff talks about this chance encounter with Rafael Nadal while doing laundry in the athletes' village. "I was in the laundry and I realized I was standing right next to Nadal," said Staff. "I didn't bother him but he was shoving all his colours and whites in together. I really wanted to say, 'Dude, you're going to have a nightmare with that. You can't just put the whole bag in - there are reds in with whites'. But what can you do?"

Eight-time Beijing gold medalist Michael Phelps described his meeting with Nadal in an interview with DPA earlier this week: "Actually I walked up to Rafael Nadal. And he is probably my favourite tennis player to watch and I walked up to him and I was like, 'I just want to meet you and don't want to take a picture or anything, I just want to meet you.' And I told him, 'I watch you all the time when you play tennis and I love watching you play tennis.' I told him good luck. That is probably the only person."

nancy hi, i have a suggestion,for extra support at the bar,what about bolt,that unreal runner,mm,he could come in handy to get supplies in,he is so fast,nancy you would never run out of anything?

Posted by beth 08/20/2008 at 08:48 PM

aussiemarg - I am not sure about billions
History does not bear that out for Olympians - they need to make the most of the time right after the Olympics - before their sport fades away from the public eye for the next 4 years
Now , I did read in the Wall Street Journal ,that there is some speculation that Nike will offer him $30 to $40 million to swtich over away from Speedo and help them develop a new prototype suit - to break into the swim market . But no offer has been made as of yet. He has a deal with Visa. Speedo and Kellogg's - but nothing in the billion range of yet .
The report in WSJ also stated that his agent was being bombarded by Hollywood starlets who want to meet the guy - in an effort to boost their career by being seen on the arm of swimming's Superman.
My time table says in 2 weeks he will be squiring one of them , or more , around to Hollywood parties . Even if they are golddiggers - why shouldn't he take advantage and go out with some hot chicks. He has been living a rather Spartan existence , training. Time for some extracurricular activities
My advice - rent , don't buy Michael . Play the field for a while :)

Posted by avid sports fan 08/20/2008 at 08:49 PM

You know Piyush is kind of funny. Piyush, do you know that Rafa has been a pro for about 4 years, so if Fed could only win in a weak era, wouldn't that make Nadal weak because he's part of Roger's era? Justine, forever my #1!

He is quite popular with the ladies around here
aussiemarg - yeah - agents will exaggerate - but I don't think the WSJ did - I think his earning potential is less than say a Tiger Woods or a Federer - just because the sport is lower profile

I was talking today in the gym to some guys - and we were speculating on
this Bolt guys value to the NFL - I mean if he could catch - he could not be caught
can you imagine him running in an open field with the ball
He would be worth a fortune

rachel, do you have to rub it in, with the resurgence of the british at this year olympics? they have upset the aussies at the cycling track etc, now you want them in the bar as well!

Posted by NP 08/20/2008 at 09:13 PM

Tennis Fan,

Obviously you're someone from a provincial region who likes to burn a lot of straw.

I don’t think I would want you in the executive, legislative or judicial branch with statements like this:

"Obliviously [sic], you were not around in the days of the oil barrens or had to work in deplorable conditions in mines and factories. Yes, Lassie Fair [sic] is good to a point but it also can be a meat grinder."

When did I ever say laissez-faire capitalism doesn't have its problems? Of course there will always be a few individuals who unfairly take advantage of other people. We have the law and social mores to punish these individuals. BTW I'm neither a conservative or a Republican, though I'm not sure what my political affiliation or ideology has to do with this discussion.

Back to the actual issues. Actually, my point was not that women shouldn't play five sets just because they can't compete against men. My actual point was that it's harder for women to play five sets. I'm not convinced by your claim that women can play three sets without being in shape. If you think female players can play for one or two hours without sufficient physical conditioning then I don't know what I can say to persuade you. But again if you really want women to play five sets then try to convince them to play for five sets on hot, humid days when the Slam events generally take place. If the majority of them don't have a problem with it then I won't have any problem with it, either. Just don't force the 5-set rule on the players if they're not willing to go along with it.

As for your claim that the multiple "levels" of government just add to the bureaucracy, I gotta say you probably don't even understand what federalism is. But since you said you didn't mean to get into a political discussion I'll drop the subject and move on.

You also said the players are calling for consolidation. That's actually news to me, so let me know if you can find an article that can confirm that more than one or two players are actually for the consolidation.

And no one argues that there should be no rules in tennis. You need to explain why having one big governing body in tennis is more beneficial than the current configuration of separate bodies. After all you yourself quoted Lord Action's truism that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Finally, you're right, players aren't required to join the ATP or the WTA. I just object to the fact that they have the power to make certain events mandatory. Again players should be allowed to do whatever they want as long as their actions don't affect the other players directly. And you're wrong that Li is an amateur, as she turned pro in 1999. You do know players aren't allowed to compete in an ATP or WTA event until they turn pro and join, right?

Again you need to explain why there's "a need for streamlining and more cooperation between the men and women’s tours." Until you can do that convincingly I think I'll stick with my positions.

Avid - hmmm i need to find a better looking photo to be convinced but well, if he is fast then he'll definitely be helpful

I don't know how you ladies feel about this guy but i've been secretly in love with him for 2 years now..i'd like to hire him

Lisa - she really liked the campus and thought the guys she met were so friendly
so - it is a definite possiblity
Her dad is concerned about her being so far from home ( as is mom )
but , the bottom line is - we want her to be happy at college - and wherever she feels she fits in and has the courses for her to study what she wants - will be good
Now - she just has to get in somewhere
It is all the giant waiting game

Beth: did were you sure to put down that she's a bengal legacy? She is entitled to 75% of her out of state tuition waived because you went there.

He is a big boy - 6'4 - and all muscle
but , keep looking
Your secret crush is certainly a keeper
I do not object to him at all :)

aa yes i have seen the drees of beth,she strikes me as a girl,that just puts the clothes on whatever,still her voice and her lyrics are mind blowing to say the least,always check the papers to see if she has a gig on here,kind of comes to sydney very quietly,not a great deal of fuss about her here,still i would love to see her live.

non sequitur city ... but ok. Yes Fatima is on the tourist curiosity tour for sure. But have not gone on pilgrimage as I am, as you might have guessed, a heathen... well at least lapsed.
If you are thinking of doing a pilgrimage I would say that Santiago de campostella is infinitely more beautiful and has Pulpo Gallego .. gallician octopus. deeeeeelicious
There is also a beautiful local porcelain that makes a fantastic souvenir.

actually - in the orientation session - they went around the room and asked where the kids were from
we won the " distance " contest - but , when Missie said " my mom went here " everyone understood why she had come so far

nT, I believe I've written more than 15 paragraphs, so does that make me famous or un-famous?

Chiconinja, Pete did look like a 13-year-old back then. Explains why he was able to hit "only" 120-mph serves.

Posted by Tari 08/20/2008 at 09:28 PM

Rachael - you OK?

naughty T: As always, envious of your travels and the places you've lived. I need to find a way to fit into one of your suitcases, lol.

Posted by Rachael 08/20/2008 at 09:30 PM

Al, that doesn't change much. Peng Shuai is still a professional player. Thanks for letting me know, though.

Posted by naughty T, Lisboa Portugal 08/20/2008 at 09:35 PM

TMF rules:

Great post earlier. I have to admit, it was probably sour, sour grapes on my part to doubt the Jamaicans' success, and none deserves punishment before the crime. Congrats on the achievement.

Sunday cannot come quickly enough for me.
