Madrid CC Day 4, Tarde 10/16/2008 - 4:41 PM

Afternoon, all.

One minor upset today in Madrid as Andy Roddick fell to Gael Monfils in three sets.  Del Potro coming past Nalbandian probably doesn't count as an upset given the last half year of the two players, though those who remember Nalbandian's sparkling end to 2007 may have been disappointed by the clean kill administered by the younger player.

One match is still on court.  Ivo Karlovic has taken a first set TB from Novak Djokovic.  I'm not sure that a Karlovic victory on a very fast court would be a tremendous surprise, but no-one should count the world no 3 out - still a lot of tennis to play.

We're at 1100 or so comments for the day thread, so it's being gracefully retired.  Please use the continuation to talk about tennis until the end of the day's play - afterwards, mildly off topic discussion is fine.  Enjoy the rest of the day's tennis.

Thanks Andrew, the other thread was taking too long to load.
2-2 2nd set Nole/Ivo.

Beckham: Why do you want Djokovic to beat Karlovic?

Posted by Pspace 10/16/2008 at 04:45 PM

Sam, isn't that the fashionable choice?

Novak is not playing well at all . Not even getting the second serve returns in .

Posted by Sam 10/16/2008 at 04:46 PM

Pspace: I guess it is for the Fed fans who worry a lot about Fed facing Karlovic.

Posted by neil in toronto 10/16/2008 at 04:47 PM

I like Ivo's shorter hair. Isn't it written in stone somewhere that all of his matches go to at least 2 tie breaks ?!?!?

Posted by jewell 10/16/2008 at 04:47 PM

I want the cocky, bombastic Djokovic back!

Posted by aussiemarg {madrid madness,waiting for our boy} 10/16/2008 at 04:47 PM

novak hasnt played well since the final of cinncy, also at the olympics where rafa beat him

"WTA quarterfinals from tennis.com Zurich Open:"
Master Ace ; your predictions for the semifinals ?

Posted by jewell 10/16/2008 at 04:48 PM

Neil!!!!!!!!!! - except for matches against Murray.

Posted by NP 10/16/2008 at 04:48 PM

Sam, why would any tennis fan want Nole NOT to beat Ivo? I mean, I do like the doctor, but the Djoker is still a much better shot-maker.

Posted by Arun (Go Smiley Fed) 10/16/2008 at 04:48 PM

Jewell: Thnx for that link about Murray - good to know his knee concerns are not so serious.. I could actually watch more than half of his match this morning before I'd to leave for work.. He exhibited excellence and remarkable fightback when Marin was serving for the 1st set @ 5-4 and 40-0.

Posted by aussiemarg {madrid madness,waiting for our boy} 10/16/2008 at 04:49 PM

greenhopper well if that will help him, find some form,ok then.

Posted by Pspace 10/16/2008 at 04:49 PM

Does anyone remember the Monfils vs Karlovic match where the good doctor was held without an ace? Did Ivo just have a bad day, or did Bambi do something special?

Posted by NP 10/16/2008 at 04:50 PM

I second that, jewell. Me likey when Nole all acts cocky.

Posted by Beckham 10/16/2008 at 04:50 PM

Sam: it goes against my sensibilities for Divo to win any match...don't ask me why...LOL...and if you remember I was never on the Fedal fans unite against Djoker bandwagon...hail I believe the only holdouts were Ros, AmyLu and moi, no? Besides after my very close encounter with the Djoker in Cincy, methinks the Djoker is just misunderstood...(I didn't admit to that...LOL)

Posted by Ndesque 10/16/2008 at 04:50 PM

Ivo just had two back-to-back weird flubs. Nole, seize the chance, deuce. Well, not anymore.

Posted by neil in toronto 10/16/2008 at 04:50 PM

Jewell!!! i didn't realize Muzzah was immune :) Who's this Broady kid that had a little blurb on your link to Murray and his knee?

Posted by jewell 10/16/2008 at 04:50 PM

How had I not taken in Rafa-Lopez tomorrow?

*faints*

Arun, I think it is cute that Murray lost track of the score. :)

Posted by Ndesque 10/16/2008 at 04:51 PM

That return just made my heart grow a little bigger. Nole, stop getting so down on himself.

Posted by ms. tangerine popsicle (tangi) 10/16/2008 at 04:51 PM

Sam,

That settles it. Pspace's mea culpa = Pspace's bratwurst goes to Sam.

Who knew Phillies fans coveted bratwurst so much? :) I don't think I've ever had a cheese steak sandwich.

Posted by Sam 10/16/2008 at 04:51 PM

Beckham: Oh yeah, I do recall that you were not on the anti-Djokovic bandwagon. ;-)

NP: I was referring to Fed fans, not tennis fans in general.

Posted by Sam 10/16/2008 at 04:52 PM

Thanks tangi. Yum!

Posted by Or 10/16/2008 at 04:52 PM

No one can say Ivo has no tennis other than his serve.

Those were two very nice shots.

Djoko is totally into his muttering now.

Posted by aussiemarg {madrid madness,waiting for our boy} 10/16/2008 at 04:52 PM

ndesque oh my,novak, seize the moment indeed,he has gone brain scared?

Posted by greenhopper 10/16/2008 at 04:53 PM

aussiemarg: what will help who find form ?

Posted by Master Ace 10/16/2008 at 04:53 PM

AI,

Zurich predictions:
SF : Pennetta vs Azarenka and Williams vs Ivanovic
F : Azarenka vs Williams
W: Williams - Other than Wimbledon, she will win her first Tier 2 title and above since winning Warsaw in 2004. Also, Venus won Zurich in 1999.

Posted by greenhopper 10/16/2008 at 04:55 PM

"No one can say Ivo has no tennis other than his serve."
Yup, an example is the rally on 1st set SP.

Posted by Ndesque 10/16/2008 at 04:55 PM

aussiemarg - I can only wonder the same, no? ;)

The TB is inevitable.

Posted by Master Ace 10/16/2008 at 04:56 PM

Pspace,
Gael is a very athletic where his speed can get to a lot of balls and the fact they played on clay at Monte Carlo. Also, chances are Gael was probably so far off the baseline that he had time to get a racquet on his serve.

Posted by NP 10/16/2008 at 04:56 PM

Gothca, Sam, though I still don't get why any Fed fan wouldn't prefer a Fed-Nole match.

Djoko leads 4-3.

Posted by Or 10/16/2008 at 04:57 PM

Djoko's major problem is that he's playing badly even when he's into the point.

Posted by neil in toronto 10/16/2008 at 04:57 PM

Thanks jewell!! I guess sometimes you gotta go outside the regular tennis organizations to find success. I don't think Canada has ever had a great tennis player who grew up within the confines of tennis canada.

Posted by Pspace 10/16/2008 at 04:58 PM

Master Ace, tx. I thought it was on HC. Clay explains it.

Posted by Ndesque 10/16/2008 at 04:58 PM

First passing shot. Which has worked, that is.

Posted by Al 10/16/2008 at 04:58 PM

I agree Cocky Nojoke evic needs to make his return.

Posted by aussiemarg {madrid madness,waiting for our boy} 10/16/2008 at 05:01 PM

he needs self belief, start playing agreesively, use that wonderful b/hnad,mmm,wheres the great shot gone, actually last time i saw him play against tsonga, his f/hand was on fire, making great angles with it,get that first serve in more, pray a lot to himself on court, has to get that mojo back, think,i can do this, the want to win, maybe he can ask Rafa,or just go and watch one of the worlds no 1 tapes!

Posted by Bismar(in)c[ilic]k 10/16/2008 at 05:01 PM

you´re welcome, neil. hee.

Becks,
*hail I believe the only holdouts were Ros, AmyLu and moi, no?*

errrh and for sure me. nole - always one of my favs.
federer - decidedly not so much.
fedal - certainly not a movement i´d participate in.

nole doesn´t return well enough to make this a sure thing for him. i guess he´ll need a lil luck when it matters most...

Posted by Pspace 10/16/2008 at 05:02 PM

neil, no insult intended. Who was the last great Canadian player? I can't remember anyone off the top.

Posted by ms. tangerine popsicle (tangi) 10/16/2008 at 05:02 PM

What a cool ad for the year-end WTA championships! Sam and Slice would love the part where Ana is running ...

Posted by NP 10/16/2008 at 05:03 PM

Good for you, Al. Good to see a fellow TWer able to see the difference between cockiness and arrogance.

Posted by greenhopper 10/16/2008 at 05:03 PM

Daniel Nestor. Terrific doubles player. There.

aussiemarg: Okay, you mean Novak. Yup, I agree. I too like his cocky version better, much better.

Posted by Ndesque 10/16/2008 at 05:03 PM

Nole fist-pumps after passing Ivo nicely. First signs of a heartbeat.

0-30. C'mon.

Posted by naughty T..landed in Lisbon 10/16/2008 at 05:03 PM

Neill, Broady just won a big junior tourny on clay. Big news. Bigger because his father has told the LTA to sod off with its money and rules and control.
Broady is doing better than the "chosen"of the LTA and they barely acknowlegge his existence.
dumb Brits

Posted by NP 10/16/2008 at 05:05 PM

Darn, another lost opportunity for Nole. 5-all.

Posted by Ndesque 10/16/2008 at 05:06 PM

Ivo rains 'em down. Goes from 0-30, to 5-all in just a moment.

Posted by Beckham 10/16/2008 at 05:06 PM

Bissy: how could I forget you?! when teutonic gloom sets in anytime the Fed is mentioned? My sincerest apologies...I have to say, I'm so glad the Fedal partnership is now defunct...

Posted by jewell 10/16/2008 at 05:08 PM

What is Fedal?

Posted by aussiemarg {madrid madness,waiting for our boy} 10/16/2008 at 05:08 PM

leave Frank alone,we all know about frank,it is tragic, that wonder, who used to play great, until he started playing around with his hair, which used to go swish around his headband, without product, then decided to go,like a samuarii, with heaps of product in it,a travesty really!!!

Posted by Al 10/16/2008 at 05:09 PM

Djokovic , dont disappoint me now . I did not come back early from work just to see you lose .

Posted by ms. tangerine popsicle (tangi) 10/16/2008 at 05:09 PM

jewell,

Federer + Nadal = Fedal.

Posted by jewell 10/16/2008 at 05:10 PM

"dumb Brits"

which I shall graciously read as "dumb Brit tennis supremos". :)

Posted by Al 10/16/2008 at 05:10 PM

Fedal = Federer + Nadal

Posted by Sam 10/16/2008 at 05:11 PM

aussiemarg: I think Rafter was the only player that could pull off the Samurai look.

Posted by jewell 10/16/2008 at 05:11 PM

thanks Tangi, but what does it mean? Are we talking about a doubles partnership or someone who likes both players?

*confused*

normal state, of course.

Posted by NP 10/16/2008 at 05:12 PM

Nole opens the 2nd TB with an ace. 1-0.

Posted by 10/16/2008 at 05:12 PM

Another possible reason Fed fans are rooting for Dr. Ivo is because Novak could take the #2 spot from Fed this fall.

Posted by Pspace 10/16/2008 at 05:12 PM

It's interesting that both Tangi and AI chose the '+' operator. I was struggling to find a good one :).

Posted by aussiemarg {madrid madness,waiting for our boy} 10/16/2008 at 05:12 PM

sam right on Sam!

Posted by Beckham 10/16/2008 at 05:12 PM

jewell: some eons ago, some Fed fans and some Nadal fans, formed the evil association called "Fedal fans unite" (shudders at the horror)...naturally this went against the sensibilities of Bissy, Ros, AmyLu and myself, so we set about on a mission to destroy this evil association, I am happy to report that we won...;)

Posted by greenhopper 10/16/2008 at 05:12 PM

Bryans got the break as Marcelo Melo DF trying to hold at 4-4. The Bryans serve it out for a 6-1 6-4 win.

Djokovic-Karlovic goes to a TB... yet again.

Posted by celeste 10/16/2008 at 05:12 PM

i`m a little sad cause i just read that the dc tickets are going to be SO expensive that in case i could obtain one i don`t know if i can afford it.ridiculous prices.
very sad.

Posted by Or 10/16/2008 at 05:14 PM

Well...

Posted by Beckham 10/16/2008 at 05:14 PM

Djokovic...what was that? Why are you trying to paint the lines...ridiculous!!!

Posted by jewell 10/16/2008 at 05:14 PM

Thanks, Beckham.

I'm afraid I like them both, however, and will continue to do so for always - with Rafa just shading it, perhaps. :)

Posted by Pspace 10/16/2008 at 05:15 PM

Man...it must be so frustrating for Nole. I'm only scoreboard watching and I want to smash my racquet.

Posted by ms. tangerine popsicle (tangi) 10/16/2008 at 05:15 PM

jewell,

It refers to the way Novak united Fed and Nadal fans earlier this year. Instead of sniping at each other, Fedal fans rooted against Djoko when he appeared to threaten the top 2 spots.

Posted by Pspace 10/16/2008 at 05:16 PM

Yes! Mini-break back. 3-3.

Posted by Bismar(in)c[ilic]k 10/16/2008 at 05:16 PM

yes, how could you, Becks? jejeje.
all apologies accepted of course. ;)

whew, thank god nole got the mini-break back.

Posted by aussiemarg {madrid madness,waiting for our boy} 10/16/2008 at 05:16 PM

celeste what a shame, for all concerned, just another money making sham, the officials and organizers should be fair to all, tennis fans,we are the ones, that always pay to see,we are the forgotton ones in this situation.

Posted by NP 10/16/2008 at 05:16 PM

TB tied at 3-all. Can Nole play the evil nurse this time around?

Ivo responds with an ace. 4-3.

Posted by Master Ace 10/16/2008 at 05:17 PM

Bryans win their doubles match 1 and 4 over Melo/Sa

Posted by jewell 10/16/2008 at 05:18 PM

ah, Tangi, I see. Thank you!

Posted by Pspace 10/16/2008 at 05:18 PM

oh, sheesh. Dr to serve for it.

Posted by greenhopper 10/16/2008 at 05:18 PM

5-4 Ivo with 2 serves to come.
2 aces ?

Posted by Or 10/16/2008 at 05:18 PM

Oh, dear.

"He only had himself to blame..."

Take it, Ivo.

Posted by neil in toronto 10/16/2008 at 05:18 PM

LOL Pspace, no offence taken. Carling Basset reached a high of 8 briefly in the early 80's and trained at Bolleteri's. Helen Kelesi i think reached a high of 13 in singles and trained exclusively with her dad. On the mens side, of course Nestor in dubs ( tho he did take out edberg in Davis Cup one year when Edberg was number 1 in the world).

I'll also throw in Greg Rusedski, tho he left Canada before he got as high as he did.

Posted by aussiemarg {madrid madness,waiting for our boy} 10/16/2008 at 05:18 PM

gee novak, before starting to think about painting lines and missing, hey remember percentage play????

Posted by NP 10/16/2008 at 05:19 PM

Ugh. Nole slams the ball into the net. Ivo leads 5-4 with 2 points on his serve. But Nole wins the 1st one with a monster FH winner. 5-all.

Posted by greenhopper 10/16/2008 at 05:19 PM

I knew it. Ivo gets very tight in pressure situations.
Poor fellow.

Posted by naughty T..landed in Lisbon 10/16/2008 at 05:22 PM

indeed Jewell. Glad that you are so adept at reading between my lines.
so long Nole. Should we now be as hysterical as when Fed lost to the serve monster?

we already won the war vs fedal, Becks? that´s awesome news. i didn´t know that! ;)

sad sad sad for nole. brilliant 100 mph FH to get the minibreak back for the 2nd time but he still loses the match.
the balcans produced the day´s gloom for me. both my serbs lost and the wrong croat won. meh.
