Australian Open Crisis Center, Day 13 01/31/2009 - 3:26 AM

Mp

Hi all. With the women's singles final starting shortly, here's today's place for discussing the tennis at Melbourne Park. This will be Dinara Safina's second Grand Slam singles final, and Serena Williams' thirteenth. After today, the winner will be number one in the world. History suggests that it will be Williams who lifts the trophy today - she leads the head-to-head 5-1, and Safina's only victory of the series was their sole match to date on clay.

Good luck to both players. Enjoy today's final, and please keep this post focused on tennis until it's over.

Dinara Safina and Serena Williams are entering Rod Laver Arena

hey everyone
Dinara has a lovely smile on her face before she enters the stadium

Bud Collins sez the Rafa-Nando SF was the best match in AO history. But no matter. Tomorrow's final will be the GOAT of all matches in tennis history. Every subsequent Fed-Rafa final will supplant the GOAT.

Hey everyone.

*organises self with tea and breakfast stuff*

Hopefully it'll be a great match, whoever wins. :)

Serena wins the toss and elects to serve.

Posted by Master Ace 01/31/2009 at 03:39 AM

WTA Australian Open Championship

(x) - Ace Seedings for AO

(4)Dinara Safina vs (1)Serena Williams
Safina road to SF: Kudryavtseva, Makarova, Kanepi, Cornet, Dokic, (7) Zvonareva
Williams road to SF: Yuan, Dulko, Peng, Azarenka, (10)Kuznetsova, (3) Dementieva

Safina won the crucial points in her last match against Zvonareva. In the 2nd set, Zvonareva had a chance to serve for a 3rd set at 6-5 but Safina broke at love then won the match in the tiebreak capped off by a forehand passing shot for winner. This is her 2nd Slam in less than 12 months. After losing to Ana Ivanovic at the2008 French Open, will Safina be able to use that experience to win her first career Slam. Williams will be going for her 10th Slam(4th Australian Open – all in odd years starting with 2003) which would put her 2 behind Billie Jean King. She played her best match of the tournament defeating Dementieva in the semifinals by getting cheap points on her serve, moving her feet, and dictating play.

Prediction : Serena Williams in 2 sets 6-3,6-4.

Match will be live on ESPN2

You mean 2nd, jewell. I was rooting for Na in my 1st comment.

Posted by Master Ace 01/31/2009 at 03:44 AM

If Serena wins today, this will be her first AO title with the roof open.

As Crazyone posted, Serena won the toss and elected to serve.

No, I meant the first comment, NP.

But the other one did raise a smile. :)

Posted by NP 01/31/2009 at 03:49 AM

Of course. Anything involving only Rafa is merely 2nd-best. Anything Fed-Rafa will always be the GOAT.

Serena it's too early for bagels

Posted by jewell - Make tea, not war. Rafa for AO 2009!!! 01/31/2009 at 04:09 AM

Beautiful rally up to that final shot from Safina - she had Serena if she didn't push that last ball long.

I hope it's not a double bagel!

It's possible to make a match after losing set 1 to a bagel, thinking about Rafa at Wimbledon 2006 final. Safina's got heart all right and I hope she can fight her way back in.
